Dr.Najma-Khan

Chicago: Najma Khan, a South Asian woman who became one of the first female physicians and part of the first wave of immigrants from Asia to the US in 1967 passed away on June 15.

Khan, an ethical humanitarian who served thousands and influenced even more was the second of eleven children born in Hyderabad, India, in 1931.

Education

Since her childhood, she had a strong sense of purpose and was inspired to do great things against all the odds. Initially, she was unable to attend school due to cultural norms for girls at that time, but she was able to convince her father but had to start her first grade at the age of 9. She quickly picked up English, worked hard, and skipped multiple classes each year. Eventually, she graduated high school early at the age of 15.

She then had aspirations to do something unheard of among Indian women of her era. At 19, she enrolled in Medical School at the prestigious Osmania University. She completed a specialized residency and received the school’s first OB-GYN diploma, one of the few awarded in all of India in 1957.

Humanitarian efforts

In the late 1950s, three of her dynamic brothers pursued graduation in US, UK, and Canada. A humanitarian at heart, Khan and another doctor friend and a pharmacist, set up a free medical clinic to serve humanity.

Her son, Sayeed Khan, recalled stories they heard while growing up. “Our relatives would tell us about ‘lines around the block’ of India’s miserable waiting to see her for medical care. For her, being a doctor was primarily a way to serve humanity.”

Immigrated to US in 1967

Najma Khan married in 1961. A few years later, America embarked upon a fundamental change in foreign policy when the landmark “US Immigration Act of 1965” was passed to address a shortage of doctors and engineers. Najma and her husband, a chemical engineer, were part of the first wave of the “Asian Brain Drain” when immigrating to the US in 1967. .

While her husband pursued his Ph.D., she studied for her medical board exams in a university campus on the East Coast. She simultaneously raised three very young children.

Khan, received an offer for a medical residency in Chicago in 1970, and soon, the young family made the windy city their new home.

As a physician, she worked for the city and had a private practice. She served the most underserved neighborhoods in Chicago and her growing Muslim community of Chicago over four decades. Najma and her husband were pillars of the community, and her family was an integral part of Chicago’s Muslim Community Center(MCC) during its early years, as reported by Muslim Observer.

Diagnosed with breast cancer

Life was challenging for new immigrants with virtually no family, community, or support system. It got tougher when Najma was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1972. She underwent successful surgery and treatment, but the diagnosis lasted for five years. Turning those five years into 50, Khan lived every day to the fullest while helping establish many relatives in both India and America.

Her eldest son, Hassan, a highly respected physician who ran a medical center, passed away before his mother in June 2019. An year later, Dr. Najma Khan died peacefully in her home on June 15. She was 88.

Dr. Najma Khan’s wisdom, kindness, unquestionable ethics, good intention and her humanitarian efforts made her the one everyone trusted. She was and will remain an inspiration for many.

Tele-health Network Swasth launched to provide free Corona care

Hyderabad: A coalition of over 100 healthcare specialists have come together to launch Swasth, a nationwide tele-medicine platform for Corona care, which digitally connects Indians to the best doctors and wellness providers. Swasth is a swift response initiative promoted by the country’s health and technology leaders to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to leverage tele-medicine as a national priority in the current distress-afflicted times. The mobile app-based service leverages India’s technology prowess to deliver equal and affordable healthcare to 1.3 billion people, cutting across geographical and income divides.

This indigenous digital healthcare system is being launched at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged traditional service providers.

Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, a p of the Swasth Governing Council, said“Swasth has brought together the best of resources in the country to provide free healthcare to bring quick relief during the crisis. Swasth will work to further public health goals and work in coordination with the Medical Council, public health organizations, and the private sector to expand quality healthcare access to the masses. I firmly believe that this crisis is a great opportunity to re-invent healthcare delivery in India.”

Swasth facilitates seamless, remote interaction between registered medical practitioners and patients through multiple modes of video and telephony. Swasth deploys AI based triaging to determine the care required, culminating in a digitally signed prescription and treatment advice.

Along with the free consultations, Swasth will also provide services like home quarantine assistance, diagnostics, pharmacies, hospital bed discovery and booking assistance at a subsidized cost.

All doctors on the Swasth platform are duly verified and undergo specially designed training programs on tele-consultation and COVID-19 clinical protocols.  Swasth is in full compliance with the industry-accepted cybersecurity norms for healthcare platforms. It uses a defense-in-depth approach to ensure that data is securely transmitted, stored, managed and accessed. Currently, the app supports consultation in Hindi, English and Gujarati and will be expanded to 25 Indian languages.

Swasth is the country’s first big push towards mass adoption of digital healthcare as a citizen empowering platform.

Dr Nachiket Mora member of the Governing Council, added, “Swasth is a unique non-profit coalition of members from multiple sections of the Indian healthcare ecosystem, including individual doctors, small and large hospitals, diagnostic labs, pharmacies, tele-medicine platforms, insurance companies, and healthcare-technology companies, who have joined hands with the goal of creating affordable healthcare for all Indians in every nook and corner of the country, so that they can immediately get the care that they need for this crisis, as well as for all their other healthcare needs. Swasth will do this by making it easy for patients to smoothly access the services they need from its members, and will also enable each of its members to provide a wide range of high quality services to their patients, by giving them access to protocols, technologies, and platforms that are best in class, completely interoperable, and fully compliant with the latest guidelines.”

Dr NK Jairam, a key member of the project team, said, As we move on with the current Corona pandemic and with social distancing being one of the key remedies to eradicate it, tele-medicine is going to be an integral part of the healthcare system. Tele- consultation has been offered by doctors since the early 2000s, however, it has gained rapid momentum because of the current situation. With Swasth, tele-medicine will gain a boost which will empower patients to make quick decisions and also teach them self-care.”

Abheek Singhi, Senior Partner at BCG, and member of the project team for this initiative, said, “Swasth is a consortium of 70+ organizations and 200+ volunteers with a common goal of building a comprehensive COVID care platform in the short term and of leveraging technology to transform primary healthcare delivery in the medium term. This is the first time such a coalition like this has come together. BCG is privileged to be partnering with this alliance”

Swasth is created by a not-for-profit consortium of different players across healthcare providers, tele-health platforms, entrepreneurs, technology experts and doctors. Swasth received a grant of INR 10 crore ($1.3 million) from the ACT Grants, an umbrella platform of entrepreneurs and investors backing start-ups fighting the pandemic.

Corona spells trouble for caretakers of wedding horses

Hyderabad: The novel Coronavirus has wreaked havoc on traditional Indian spring weddings, leaving legions of both Hindu and Muslim couples and especially the wedding organisers that includes caterers, function hall owners, convention centres owners, band masters, dishwashers, servers, vendors and wedding horse owners. Celebrations and their seasonal business orders of weddings are postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown.

Perhaps this year, the season of wedding business have been worse affected. Due to the pandemic, several businesses that made their money during the wedding season, which starts from March till December, are in dire straits.

Besides biryani and Irani Chai, Hyderabad is also known for its lavish weddings. As for people from various communities like Muslim, Hindu, Marvadi, Sikh, Jain, Yadav, and Agarwals, they spend lakhs of rupees on everything from matchmaking to makeup.

This lavish weddings supports thousands of labourers and working poor. This includes cooks, servers, band masters, wedding buggi, horse, and other lightings used for grand baraats. Many make their annual income usually during the wedding season. The cancellation of many big weddings during lockdown is an indication on how the pain is being felt by everyone.

Their wedding cancellation did not bode well for wedding horse owner Mohammed Aslam and the 15 or so wedding horse owners, band masters, laborers who hold stick light and petromax light in the baraat.

Aslam had received pre-bookings and he was planning to hire with a big hole. He also bought new beautiful horses for wedding season before the lockdown so that he could earn more money. But now Aslam and others who run several of these shops at Hoontwadi in Chudi Bazar are not even left with enough money to feed their horses and camels which they use for business purposes. They receive orders for weddings, festivals like Bonalu, Ram Navami juloos, Milad rallies, Alam rallies, and gyarwi rallies.

Aslam, owns a shop on the banks of Musi river, the area which was allotted by the wife of Nizam Umda Begum. This particular area was named as Hoontwadi as this area was a dedicated market for horses and camels.
Speaking to siasat.com, Mohammed Aslam who is also a professional horse trainer said, “This year the season is a lost business opportunity of over five lakh rupees for us.”

Another wedding horse vendor, Mohammed Azam was planning to make his wedding horses ready for the baraat adorned with beautiful silver jewellery for his female white horse Jamna who his eight feet. He also prepared his staff of 10 laborers and 10 band masters with all new tunes to be played in weddings.

He has now has to slash the salaries of his staff and remove some his workers due to no bookings. Some how he had received food help for his 40 horses from Dr. Virendra Khwaja and Mrs. Rebica from Hyderabad Race Club.

The would-be groom Atif Khan and his fiance, Syeda Ayesha, were planning five full days of celebrations and ceremonies for more than 2,000 guests. The latter had a dream that his groom will come with big band baja baraat on a ghodi (female horse) and she will go in doli for the wedding.

“There is no business right now even after the relaxation several other local businesses have been reopened. But when will our business take off? Even we are sanitising our horses, buggies, dolis and making our band masters wear face masks mainataing social distancing showing to the customers but we are not receiving any orders for baraats,” he said.

“So we at Hoontwadi share the burden,” added Azam.

Yusuf Khan, a caretaker of 15 white horses, would have sent his horses for a big baraat had is keeping his horses in the shop as this and other bookings go by the wayside.

“This work is the only sole of my income”, said Mohammed Aslam who had been running a shop at Hoontwadi since three decades earlier his great grand father Jaani Bhai use to run this shop during the Nizams’ time. The pain rippled to these caretakers, their horses and the occasional elephant who makes appearances at Hyderabad traditional nuptials.

Nearly all wedding celebrations have been canceled this year or at least postponed.

“The scale and size of grand weddings will decrease and these are challenging times for the caretakers of horses at Hoontwadi,” said Mohammed Aslam.

Mr.Subhash said that calling PV Narasimha Rao as ‘BJP prime minister’ shows AIMIM’s narrow mindedness. When the whole country is paying homage to the departed legendary & versatile leader, the party (AIMIM) which taken birth in the soil of Telangana and its leaders are enjoying the fruits of PV’s economic reforms along with 1.3-crore Indian population, making such comments is ridiculous.

At least, it should pay respects to PV who was the loving son of the soil. The party should come out from the trance of religious zealotry he added.

Mr.Subhash said that the former Prime Minister Late P V Narasimha Rao had contributed for the development of the country through his economic policies as well as to his Congress Party. The Congress party which has century old history, and P.V. Narasimha Rao from his younger days contributed to the Party   its leadership not only neglected him but did not even pay due respect to this great leader but Indian citizens irrespective of their political background and religion, always remembered him as a great visionary who had brought the country’s economy back to life from Intensive Care Unit he said.

The Entire country and world knew about the efficiency of the P V Narasimha Rao when he was Prime Minister. First of all he is an Indian citizen.  He cannot be held responsible for demolition of Babri masjid, No matter if a section of community criticizes him. The issue of Babri Masjid is amicably settled by Supreme Court and where is the question of raking up the issue now he wondered?

Just because PV Narasimha Rao opposed  the Nizam’s & Razakars rule in Hyderabad State & just because all parties including PM Modi started praising him for his contributions to the country Mr Owaisi wanted to criticise him for his own  benefit & publicity.
