Ganesh immersion: HC upholds ban on PoP idols in Hussain Sagar, other lakes

Missing voters list: Telangana HC adjourns Congress candidate's plea

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court reaffirmed its 2021 ruling prohibiting the immersion of Ganesh idols made from plaster of Paris (PoP) in local lakes and ponds, including Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad.

Instead, these idols must be immersed in designated baby ponds created by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other civic bodies, the court said.

During the proceedings, a bench comprising Justice T Vinod Kumar and Justice J Anil Kumar declined to consider a contempt petition against ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and D Sridhar Babu, who were accused of facilitating arrangements, such as deploying large cranes around Hussainsagar for idol immersions.

Additionally, the court refused to impose any restrictions on the production and sale of PoP idols by the Telangana Ganesh Murti Kalakaar Welfare Association based in Dhoolpet.

The bench was addressing a contempt petition along with several interim applications submitted by advocate Mamidi Venu Madhav, who requested the court to penalize the authorities for not enforcing the 2021 order.

The judges acknowledged the government’s commitment from the previous year to implement the order and expressed their satisfaction, thereby closing the contempt petition.

They also declined to consider another request to include the newly established HYDRAA in the contempt case, as this entity is now responsible for lake protection.

Counsel for the Dhoolpet Idol Makers association, MV Durga Prasad, argued that PoP itself is not harmful and, therefore, its use should not be prohibited.

“Plaster of Paris (PoP) is widely utilized in the medical field, where it is used to make all bandages. Additionally, many false ceilings in homes are constructed with PoP. The issue lies specifically with the immersion of PoP idols in lakes, so the court should focus on preventing such immersions rather than imposing an unnecessary ban on the use of PoP,” he stated.

Senior counsel L Ravi Chander, representing the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti, opposed Venu Madhav’s application to reopen the contempt case.

“This is a 2021 order from the high court. Any contempt action should be initiated within one year,” he argued.

Appoint TSCC president by September 6: Telangana HC to state govt

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has mandated that the state government complete a survey within three months to identify the politically backward classes and to enumerate backward-class voters across all local bodies in Telangana.

This directive follows the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of ‘Vikas Kishanrao Gawali vs. State of Maharashtra’.

A Division Bench of the Telangana High Court, led by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J Sreenivas Rao, instructed Advocate General A. Sudershan Reddy to follow the Supreme Court’s guidelines specified in Paragraph 13 of the aforementioned judgment.

The High Court’s ruling was prompted by three petitions submitted in 2018, 2019, and 2020 by the Telangana State Backward Classes Welfare Association, along with individuals such as Jajula Srinivas Goud and Dasoju Sravan Kumar.

These petitions contested the ongoing local body election process, arguing that it should not proceed without the required fresh identification of politically backward classes, as mandated by the Supreme Court’s previous ruling in ‘K. Krishnamurthy vs. Union of India.’

During the previous hearing in early August, the petitioners’ lawyers pointed out that the Supreme Court had issued new orders in 2021, reaffirming the triple test criteria for OBC reservations. They indicated that their issues would be resolved if the directives from the Vikas Kishanrao Gawali case were properly implemented.

On August 6, the High Court instructed the Advocate General to estimate the time needed to comply with the Supreme Court’s orders. In response, the Advocate General reported on Tuesday that the government would require about three months to fulfil these directives.

Consequently, the High Court granted a three-month extension for completing the process and required a status report to be submitted upon its completion.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TGRERA) has ordered the prosecution of Sahiti Infratec Ventures for violations under the TPDFE Act.

The economic offences wing of the Central Crime Station, Hyderabad has attached the land under the Telangana Protection of Depositors from Financial Establishments Act, TGRERA, led by chairperson N Satyanarayana, members K Srinivasa Rao, and Laxmi Naryana Jannu, stated in their order.

The issue began in Jan 2020 when Sahiti Infratech entered into a development agreement with landowner SVNR Infra to build a multi-storied residential apartment complex with an area of 1.25 lakh square feet.

In its judgment, TGRERA authorised its registrar to launch a prosecution, under Section 80 of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, against Sahiti Infratec before the metropolitan magistrate concerned. The developer was also directed to refund payments to buyers.

The authority further issued several other orders regarding the project, including a directive to prevent the company from entering into any further development agreements.

The developer’s name would be posted in the list of defaulters, and the photographs of promoters — Boodati Laxminarayana and Boodati Parvathi would be displayed on the TGRERA website.

Hearings on the complaints, including those from five homebuyers like Katakam Santosh, began in Aug 2023. Following these hearings, the complainants formed ‘Sahiti Shista Abode Welfare Association, Kompally’.

Despite being served notices, Sahiti Infratec failed to appear before TGRERA. “Sahiti Infratec Ventures India Private Limited is restrained from advertising, marketing, booking, selling or offering apartments for sale in the project. The developer must refund the payments made by the complainants, along with interest at the rate of 10.85% per annum,” the order read.

Sahiti Shista Abode is unregistered, and the present stage of work at the project site is just at the excavation level, with limited basement work in only the ‘H’ block and no progress in the ‘G’ block, ‘F’ block, and the amenities block, it further added.

IndiGo adds additional flights between Jeddah, Mumbai

Hyderabad: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-II, Hyderabad, has ordered IndiGo Airlines to refund Rs 4.14 lakh to a passenger who faced inconvenience due to the last-minute rescheduling of a flight.

In addition, the commission directed the airline to pay an additional Rs 1.47 lakh to cover the extra expenses incurred due to the flight rescheduling.

Tickets booked for wedding ceremonies

According to a report in TOI, it all began on February 28, 2023, when the complainant, P. Navaratan, booked 50 tickets with IndiGo Airlines to travel from Chennai to Ahmedabad and from Ahmedabad to Indore on June 11, 2023, for his daughter’s wedding ceremonies.

For the tickets, the complainant paid Rs 4,14,150.

However, on May 27, his travel agent informed him about a delay in the flight by over three hours.

Though he requested the airline to provide an alternative solution, it was denied.

With very little time left before the wedding ceremonies, the complainant had to book 50 new tickets, paying Rs 5.61 lakh.

Following the incident, the complainant approached the commission with his grievance.

In response, IndiGo claimed that the information about the flight delay had been communicated to the passenger on May 10 via email and on May 11 via SMS, with an option to choose another flight or cancel for a full refund.

The airline alleged that the passenger did not respond until May 30.

Hyderabad Commission orders IndiGo Airlines to pay additional Rs 30K

After hearing both sides, the commission held the airline responsible for not refunding the ticket amount, despite the flight being rescheduled due to operational reasons.

The commission not only asked the airline to refund the amount paid for the original tickets and to cover the extra expenses but also ordered it to pay Rs 30,000 as compensation and costs.

Distribution of 2BHK houses to 12K beneficiaries from September 2

Hyderabad: Amid demolitions carried out by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRA) in the city, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday, September 11 promised 2BHK houses to residents along the Musi River.

The Chief Minister also urged people who have encroached on land in the Full Tank Level (FTL) or buffer zones of the lakes to voluntarily vacate.

He made it clear that demolitions of all encroachments on FTL or buffer zones will be carried out by HYDRA.

11000 alongside Musi to receive 2BHK houses in Hyderabad

Speaking during the SI passing-out parade at the Telangana Police Academy, Revanth Reddy stated that 11,000 poor residents alongside the Musi River will receive 2BHK houses.

Once implemented, this initiative will not only clear the FTL and buffer zones of the river but also ensure that residents alongside the Musi will not have to worry about heavy rains each monsoon season.

During the monsoon season, residents face threats as the river swells due to the release of water from upstream following heavy rains in Hyderabad.

HYDRA demolitions in Hyderabad

Recently, HYDRA demolished alleged illegal constructions of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former MLA Katasani Rambhupal Reddy within the FTL limits of Pedda Cheruvu in Ameenpur, Sangareddy district.

Rambhupal Reddy, a former MLA from Andhra Pradesh, and his partner Ramesh had allegedly encroached on significant areas near Ameenpur Lake. The politician claimed ownership of the land between two water bodies inside the lake’s FTL limits and had built compound walls using concrete and metal sheets. A criminal case has been filed against the former AP MLA.

Although HYDRA is conducting demolitions in Hyderabad, it has recently assured the public that no occupied houses will be demolished as part of its demolition drives.

It remains to be seen how HYDRA will continue its drive to reclaim lakes in the city.

Raja Singh

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh asked Hyderabad commissioner of police CV Anand to initiate action against people who consume liquor in front of Ganesh idols and eve-tease women during the ongoing Ganesh immersion processions which started a few days ago.

In a letter addressed to the Hyderabad Commissioner, Raja Singh said that in recent years, he has witnessed certain individuals with malicious intent joining the processions, creating a nuisance by engaging in inappropriate activities.

“There have been incidents where people, sitting on tuskers (trucks) drink alcohol openly and throw water packets at public, often targeting women in particular. The harassment of women and girls had unfortunately become an issue that tarnishes the sanctity of the celebrations. Such behaviour is deeply disrespected and disrupts the spiritual significance of the festival,” Raja Singh complained.

He requested the Hyderabad police commissioner to adopt strict measures to control such behaviour, increase vigilance and take immediate action against those who engage in such disruptive activities.

Earlier, Raja Singh also asked Hindus to boycott Halal certified products during the ongoing Ganesh festivities. The BJP MLA, who has been advocating against Halal products for long, once again appealed to Hindus not to purchase items with the certification.

Harish Rao slams Telangana government over surge in dog attacks

Temple authorities file complaint against Harish Rao for hurting devotee sentiments

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao on Wednesday, September 11 expressed outrage over the state government’s indifference to the rising incidents of dog attacks.

Rao claimed that over 60,000 dog bite cases have been reported this year, leading to the loss of innocent lives and devastated families.

The situation is worsened by the government’s failure to control the stray dog population or ensure that life-saving anti-rabies injections are available in public hospitals, he said.

“Sanitation has taken a hit across Telangana, with garbage piling up in the streets, contributing to the growing stray dog menace. Municipal authorities and the urban development department have failed to act, and this failure is costing lives,” Rao said.

The senior BRS leader pointed out that there are over 2 million stray dogs across Telangana, with more than 1 million in the GHMC area alone. “The state government has not released funds for sterilization operations, which are crucial for managing the stray dog population. This inaction is unacceptable,” he said.

Rao said that although the Telangana High Court had expressed strong displeasure over the increasing number of stray dog attacks in the state, the government remains aloof.

On July 14, the High Court took suo-moto cognisance directing the the animal birth control (ABC) committee to chart out a comprehensive strategy to combat stray dog bites instead of just conducting sterilization. The committee was ordered to include the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), concerned authorities in the state government and animal welfare organisations.

Rao suggested adopting proven strategies in states like Goa that have not reported dog bite incidents in the last three years.

“We also demand the state government follow the precedents set by the Haryana and Punjab High Courts by providing Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of those who die from dog bites and Rs 50,000 to those who are injured,” Rao added.

Shopaholics, get Numaish products for reasonable prices HERE

Shopaholics Alert! Get Numaish products for reasonable prices HERE

Hyderabad’s iconic Numaish runs for 45 days at the beginning of the year, leaving a shopping bag-sized hole in the lives of shopaholics for the rest of the year.

Although expos and pop-ups have become commonplace in the city, nothing can beat the charm of the 83-year-old exhibition. The coming together of businesses from all over the country, savoring delectable food, and enjoying enthralling rides, leaves Hyderabadis wanting more.

Well, we have exciting news for those who haven’t shopped to their heart’s content at this year’s exhibition. The Family Shopping Expo is currently underway, and it’s bringing a slice of Numaish right to your doorstep.

Affordable finds from Numaish await

Stall owners from the famous Numaish have set up shop here, offering the same exclusive and quality products- but this time, at even more reasonable prices.

Located at Minar Garden, the expo offers the famed wooden handicrafts, Lucknowi chikkan work kurtis, Chandigarh suit sets, Pakistani suit sets, Kashmiri dry fruits, juttis and Aurangabad’s bed sheets.  The Numaish stall owners, known for their craftsmanship and variety, have brought a range of products that shoppers eagerly await each year.

What’s more enticing is the pricing. Unlike Numaish, where stalls are packed with crowds and prices sometimes get steep due to demand, the Family Shopping Expo is a more relaxed shopping environment. With one quick stroll around the venue, shoppers can find their favorite items at slashed prices, making it the perfect spot for bargain hunters looking for quality. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful co-ord set, artisanal homeware, or even some quirky accessories, you can find it all here without burning a hole in your pocket.

Beyond the shopping, the expo also offers a wholesome family experience, with food stalls, entertainment options, and a festive ambiance that’s perfect for a weekend outing.

Off-season dull response

It’s worth noting that the response to this year’s expo has been somewhat subdued. Traditionally held during Ramzan, the event usually benefits from the festive season’s energy and high footfall. The off-season timing this year has led to a quieter atmosphere.

“I have been setting up my stall in the Family Shopping Expo since 2019 and have always seen great response from the people of Hyderabad. However, this year I didn’t find the same enthusiasm from the people. It’s because of the off-season expo, I believe,” said a salesman from Uttar Pradesh who has set shop for his wooden handicrafts collection.

Another reason for the dull response is the lack of awareness about the expo. With limited promotion and many people unaware of the event’s existence, foot traffic has been lower than expected.

“I am coming from Lucknow and I have always found Hyderabadi’s to be great customers which is why I visit the city for Numaish and Ramadan expos. However, I have found that this time, people were unaware of the expo,” said a Chikankari salesman, speaking to Siasat.com.

Now that we have made you aware of this opportunity, don’t miss out! The Family Shopping Expo is only on for a few more days—just 5 days left to explore, shop, and snag those Numaish treasures at unbeatable prices.

HYDRA will continue demolitions, asserts Telangana CM Revanth

Will resolve journalists housing issue: Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday, September 11, asserted that the state government will not stop ongoing demolitions of encroachments on lakes by the HYDRA agency. He stated that no matter how influential a person is, they will be forced to vacate buildings that were built on lake beds.

Addressing a passing-out parade at the Telangana Police Academcy in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Revanth Reddy asked those who have built structures on full tank levels (FTL) or buffer zones to voluntarily vacate the land. The Telangana government in July rechristened the State Disaster Response Department into the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRA), with more powers, including the protection of lakes.

HYDRA in the last few weeks has been demolishing illegal encroachments on lake beds. So far, over 50 acres of land has been reclaimed by the Telangana government, which involves the demolition of illegal properties belonging to Congress, BJP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leaders. So far, Revanth Reddy has not shown any signs of stopping or slowing down demolitions by HYDRA.

On Wednesday, Revanth Reddy also said that the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar were built to supply water to Hyderabad, and that those receive water all the way from the Anantgiri Hills side. “But people built farm houses on the lake bed. We have no problem with people who construct farm houses, but those have no drainage. The drainage is taken and dumped in Gandipet (Osman Sagar). I am asking you friends, will those people who are sending drainage to Gandipet drink that water?” he questioned.

“We started HYDRA with the task to remove these structures. No matter who that person is, they cannot build homes on lakes. Whatever you want to build, construct it further away,” said Revanth Reddy. He added that even if people get stay orders from courts, the state government will fight those vacate it.

Revanth Reddy also promised 2BHK houses to residents along the Musi River. The Chief Minister also urged people who have encroached on land in the Full Tank Level (FTL) or buffer zones of the lakes to voluntarily vacate. He made it clear that demolitions of all encroachments on FTL or buffer zones will be carried out by HYDRA.

Although HYDRA is conducting demolitions in Hyderabad, it has recently assured the public that no occupied houses will be demolished as part of its demolition drives.

HYDRA demolishes actor Nagarjuna's property in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The recently formed Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRA) has to date demolished illegal constructions across 26 locations, reclaiming 111.72 acres of land within GHMC limits.

HYDRA Commissioner AV Ranganath submitted a detailed report on Wednesday, September 11, to the Telangana State government, announcing that it has 262 structures since its inception.

According to the report, HYDRAA demolished a total of 42 unauthorised structures near Sunnam Cheruvu in Madhapur, the highest number in the report. This was followed by 24 structures near Pedda Cheruvu in Ameenpur, 14 structures near Appa Cheruvu in Gaganpahad, 13 structures near Kathwa lake in Dungidal municipality, and three structures in Manemma Galli, Ramnagar cross roads in Musheerabad constituency.

The first raid took place on June 27 at plot no 30 (Lotus Pond) in the Film Nagar Cooperative Society. Subsequent demolitions included structures owned by political figures, businessmen, and even the N-Convention, owned by film actor Akkineni Nagarjuna, in Tummidikunta Lake, Madhapur, on August 24, reclaiming 4.9 acres.

HYDRA to have more power; NOC to become mandatory

According to various media reports, the government is gearing up to accord more power to HYDRA with regulations requiring a mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) for construction near lakes, canals, and other water bodies in and around Hyderabad.

Under the new rules, builders will need to obtain an NOC from HYDRA to ensure compliance with environmental and zoning regulations, with stricter enforcement in flood-prone areas. These measures aim to safeguard water bodies and protect buffer zones from encroachments amid Hyderabad’s rapid urban growth.

According to reports, further details about the extent of buffer zones and the specific areas affected by the new regulations are expected to be released by the government soon. In the meantime, builders and developers are urged to consult with HYDRA before starting any new projects to avoid legal issues and ensure compliance with the updated regulations.

Niloufer Hospital refuses to give data on seasonal diseases in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: While seasonal diseases in Hyderabad have increased by 30 percent in August, state-run hospital authorities in the city seem to be unwilling to share individual data on the number of cases.

Niloufer Hospital authorities in particular when visited by Siasat.com, were reluctant to even share current figures regarding the number of cases.

When Siasat.com contacted the superintendent of Niloufer Hospital, the official refused to provide details or data on the cases of seasonal diseases being reported from across Hyderabad at the hospital, citing a verbal order. While it is not clear as to why the data is not being shared, a source mentioned that the unofficial order has come from the higher-ups and that all such data will be given to the director of public health instead of being shared with the media.

However, other government hospitals in Hyderabad shared partial data on dengue fever. An official from Gandhi Hospital said, “There are 22 fever cases now out of which five are dengue positive, one malaria and there are no cases of typhoid or norovirus.” The official however did not specify the number of seasonal disease cases reported at the hospital since July.

Similarly, an official from the Fever Hospital at Nallakunta said that there are three to five cases of dengue fever at the hospital at present. “Since July, 45 cases of dengue have been reported at the hospital,” the official added.

As per the official data, Telangana has reported a total of 6,405 dengue cases up to August 31, according to the director of public health and family welfare. The state conducted 1.11 lakh tests, resulting in a positivity rate of 5.7 percent.

As of August 21, there were 4,648 dengue cases, indicating that 1,757 new cases were recorded in the last 10 days of August, accounting for 27.4 percent of the total cases.

Data from the DPHFW shows that the districts with high-risk for dengue are Hyderabad, Suryapet, Medchal Malkajgiri, Khammam, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Jagtial, Sangareddy and Warangal.

There has also been a rise in chikungunya cases. The number increased from 106 on August 21 to 178 on August 31, an increase of 72 cases. Of the 3,614 samples tested for chikungunya, the positivity rate stands at 5 percent.

Additionally, there has been a slight rise in malaria cases, with the number increasing from 188 on August 21 to 200 on August 31, a growth of 12 cases. The total samples tested are 23.06 lakh leading to a positivity rate of 0.008 percent.

As part of the ongoing fever survey by the health department, 1.72 crore households have been visited, 5.29 crore individuals have been screened, and 3.05 lakh fever cases have been identified as of August 31, the data revealed.
