Telangana HC grants relief to Tech Mahindra over income tax

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Friday, January 31, granted relief to Tech Mahindra in the re-assessment of income tax for the income earned for assessment years 2002-03 to 2008-09.

The court allowed the petition filed by Tech Mahindra after the company challenged the action of the income-tax department for refusing to accept the revised returns filed for the above-mentioned period where the former chairman of Satyam Computers had inflated the revenue and paid taxes on fictitious income.

Tech Mahindra had sought fresh and proper assessments based on the actual income of Satyam Computers.

A division bench comprising Justice P Sam Koshy and Justice Nandikonda Narsing Rao pronounced the order in the batch of petitions filed regarding this issue in the years 2011 to 2013.

The Telangana High Court held that the assessment orders were illegal and violative of Article 265 of the Constitution and void ab initio. The income-tax department was directed to recompute Tech Mahindra’s income based on restated accounts which excluded fictitious income.

The court allowed Tech Mahindra to file revised returns based on audited financials, while the income-tax department was directed to conduct proper reassessment excluding the fictitious income.

First rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar: Bandi to CM Revanth

Hyderabad: In a tense exchange on Friday, January 31, Union minister of state for Home affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar challenged Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy to rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar.

The Karimnagar MP’s remark comes in response to Revanth’s statement threatning to rename the street which houses the Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s office in Nampally as Gaddar Galli. Addresing the chief minister, Bandi said, “If you have guts first change Hyderabad’s name to Bhagyanagar.”

He further said that the Congress party insulted Gaddar while he was alive, and used him as an intelocutor for a dialogue with naxals. “Couldn’t help but laugh at Congress CM who thinks renaming a street is some kind of revenge for not giving a Padma award. Is this child’s play?” the former Telangana BJP president said in a post on X.

Kumar further asked Reddy as to why he is prioritising Gaddar when several politicians, police officers and their families were victims of Naxalism in Telangna. He further asked the chief minister to change the name of the lane if that satisfies his ego.

The Union minister urged the Telangana CM to focus on promises made to people in the build up to the Assembly elections. He alleged that the Congress is using the poll code for MLC elections as an excuse to withhold the payments to farmers under the Rythu Bharosa scheme.

The BJP leader said that since the scheme has already been started, the Election Commission should not have any objections on its implementation. Kumar said that Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy has sent a letter to the Election Commission in this regard.

He called for immediate release of Rythu Bharosa and other welfare schemes.

Telangana CM Revant warns Bandi against disrespecting Gaddar.0

Kumar’s post comes a day after Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy said that he would rename the lane in Hyderabad which houses the Telangana BJP’s office as Gaddar Galli.

Taking a jibe at the Union minister for defending the Centre’s denial of a Padma award to former naxalite Balladir Gaddar, Reddy said, “If you ever tried to disrespect Balladeer Gaddar again, I will name the street on which BJP state headquarters is located in Nampally, after Gaddar.”

Addressing the audience at a cultural event held to commemorate the 77th birth anniversary of Gaddar alias Gummadi Vitthal Rao on Friday, January 31 at Ravindra Bharathi, he said that every time BJP leaders would write the address of their party office, they will be reminded of the revolutionary singer, if that street was renamed as “Gaddar anna galli.”

Bandi Sanjay defends Centres denial of Padma award to Gaddar

Earlier, Kumar had defended the Centre’s refusal to confer a Padma award onto Telugu Revolutionary poet Gaddar, accusing the legendary poet of orchesterating the murders of BJP activists and police officials.

Sanjay’s remarks followed the chief minister’s statement expressing disappointment over the Central government disregarding the state’s recommendations over this year’s Padma awards. A reporter’s question on the state’s nomination, prompted Bandi’s remarks against the activist.

“Why should Gaddar be given (Padma Awards)? He partnered with those who murdered BJP activists. He partnered with those who encountered many policemen..Gaddar was a close ally of the Naxals, why would he be considered for awards?” Bandi Sanjay asked.

He further added that the state government should have been more careful while filing the nominations. “Everything will be considered. The (Telangana) government should have been careful while sending the names to the centre (for Padma Awards),” he stated.

Dogs attack minor girl in Hyderabad's Rajendranagar, rescued

Hyderabad: In yet another case of dog bite incident, a four-year-old girl was attacked by dogs in Hyderabad’s Rajendranagar. Thankfully, the child was rescued before any unfortunate tragedy took place.

The incident occurred on Friday evening, January 31, when the little girl was playing on the road. A CCTV camera installed in the area shows two dogs following the little girl. In the next scene, the girl screams as the dogs pounce on her. In one instance, she is dragged by one of the dogs.

Upon hearing her cries, a few people chased away the dogs and saved the child. The incident took place in Golden Heights colony.

When Siasat.com contacted the police regarding details of the dog attack incident, the Rajendranagar police said they had not received any complaint so far.

This incident has caused safety among people.

Last year, in an alarming incident, a rabid dog bit went on a biting spree injuring 11 children in Telangana’s Nizamabad district on December 7. All the children were below the age of 12.

Initially, the dog attacked and bit two children in the Gole Bungalow colony and later went on attacking children in the surrounding colonies.

Then on November 16, 2024, twenty-one pilgrims were reportedly injured in a stray dog attack in Yellareddypet Mandal in the Rajanna Siricilla district of Telangana. The pilgrims were attending the  Venugopala Swamy Jatara when the incident took place. The injured were taken to the local government hospital but due to a shortage of anti-rabies vaccines, some were transferred to the Sircilla hospital for treatment.

Hyderabad Traffic police to conduct drive against black films, sirens

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad traffic police will launch an awareness campaign on Sunday, February 2 against the use of black films and sirens in four-wheelers.

Speaking to Siasat.com, Hyderabad traffic police commissioner P Viswa Prasad said, “This is a regular exercise. We focus on various violations and this is one of those.”

Despite the legal prohibition, many four-wheelers continue to use tinted glass or black films, sirens, and multi-toned and musical horns which threaten the safety of the public, create situations of confusion and panic, disrupt the traffic flow, and cause road accidents.

“Citizens are requested to adhere to the above legal provisions and avoid using the tinted glass or black films, sirens, multi-toned and musical horns on their vehicles and voluntarily remove them in advance if they are there on their vehicles,” Prasad said.

Citizens are requested to report the traffic violations to Hyderabad Traffic Police on Hyderabad Traffic Police Facebook, X (Twitter) or Traffic Help Line (9010203626).

Harish Rao blames Congress for economic decline of Telangana

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao blamed the Congress government for the poor performance of the real estate sector in Telangana.

On Friday, January 31, he said under Congress rule, farmers, weavers, auto drivers, and now real estate builders are being pushed to commit suicide due to the government’s inefficient policies and failure to provide economic stability.

Citing the tragic suicide of a builder in Medchal district, Harish Rao said that Hyderabad which flourished as a real estate hub under the BRS governance had now turned into a graveyard for builders due to the present government’s mismanagement.

The former Telangana finance minister blamed the collapse of the real estate sector on a series of reckless decisions, including demolition drives by HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency ) against legally approved constructions, inconsistent announcements on Pharma City and Hyderabad Metro corridors, forced collection for building approvals, lack of new investments, and failing law and order.

The senior BRS leader reminded Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy of his past as a realtor. “As a realtor, Revanth Reddy once boasted about his knowledge of real estate. But today, his misgovernance is destroying the real estate sector,” Rao said in an X post.

Rao warned that if firm actions aren’t taken by the Telangana government, it would lead to the state’s decline.

Telangana to lose 1462 PG medical seats due to SC order: Harish Rao

On January 29, Harish Rao advised the state government to approach the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench challenging the top court’s order that the states’ local quota in postgraduate medical admissions.

He demanded the state government pass a resolution in the Assembly in favour of the local quota in PG seats and exert pressure on the Centre to protect the state quota in the allocation of seats.

“Presently, out of 2,924 PG seats in the state, as per 50 percent local quota Telangana was getting 1,462 seats. If the state quota is removed, the students from Telangana will lose out, as all the seats will go to the All-India quota.” Apart from the PG in-service quota, the BC, SC, and ST reservations for PG seats in southern states like AP, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka risk getting affected adversely,” he said.

Hyderabad's Dr. Foodie and ZUCI join the Kunafa Chocolate craze

In 2024, Dubai’s famous FIX Dessert Chocolatier took the world by storm with its Kunafa Chocolate bar. As the trend spread, the world saw countless renditions of the bar. Many Hyderabadi businesses too jumped on the bandwagon, putting their own spin on the craze- introducing Kunafah bars, brownies, cakes and more. Now, Ahmed Ashfaq aka Dr. Foodie and ZUCI Chocolates have come together to introduce their own luxurious take on the bar.

This collaboration has graced Hyderabad with a meticulously crafted Kunafa Chocolate bar, combining the irresistible crunch of kataifi with a creamy pistachio filling, all enveloped in a layer of premium chocolate.

Behind the scenes of the Kunafa Chocolate Bar

The collaboration between Dr. Foodie and ZUCI Chocolates was the perfect match for creating this luxurious Kunafa Chocolate Bar. “I’ve known Aparna and Chaitanya Gorepatti, the owners of ZUCI, for many years, and we’ve built a strong bond over that time,” says Ahmed. “Their expertise in chocolate-making and my passion for food made this collaboration a natural fit.”

The process of perfecting the bar, however, wasn’t an overnight task. It took a couple of weeks of refining the recipe, tweaking flavours, and experimenting with different textures to achieve the right balance. The duo did not want to replicate the original exactly; instead, they focused on making subtle improvements that would suit Indian palates better. The result? 200 g of pure indulgence priced at Rs. 900.

Justifying its premium price is the attention to detail gone into the bar, especially in the chocolate itself. “The game is in the chocolate,” Ahmed tells Siasat.com, “The couverture we have chosen is of the highest quality, and our tempering technique ensures a perfect snap when you bite into it, offering a luxurious texture that enhances the overall experience.”

Reactions pour in

The feedback has been nothing short of exceptional since its launch in Hyderabad. “Some claim that it’s even better than FIX Chocolate, which is the greatest compliment we could’ve received,” Ahmed says. The praise hasn’t just been local- people from all over India have been reaching out to get their hands on the bar.

When asked if the Kunafa Chocolate Bar will be a limited-edition treat or a permanent addition, Ahmed shares, “The response has been amazing, and people are loving it. We’ll see what the future holds, but we will try our best to meet the demand.”

Siasat.com’s review? It lives up to the hype. The nutty pistachio, crunchy kataifi and velvety chocolate form a combination of textures that make every bite delightful. Those who appreciate indulgent desserts can try it at least once.

Telangana BJP protest against Sonia Gandhi's remark on Prez

Hyderabad: The Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday, February 1 protested against Congress senior leader Sonia Gandhi’s remark on President Droupadi Murmu.

Soon after Murmu’s inaugural address to the Parliament session, Sonia Gandhi remarked to her children, Rahul and Priyanka, “The poor lady, the President, was very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing.”

Sonia was heard saying in a video that immediately started doing the rounds on social media triggering a furore with BJP leaders lashing her for “insulting” the first tribal Indian President.

Protesting the remark, the Telangana BJP burnt effigies of the former Congress president amid slogans of “Rahul Gandhi Down Down”

The Rastrapati Bhavan said Sonia Gandhi’s remark was unacceptable and in poor taste and “hurt the dignity of the high office.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sonia Gandhi’s statement insulted those who progress from among poor, Dalits, tribals, OBCs to a better life.

“The disrespectful and condescending remarks made by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi against Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji, are deeply reprehensible and exposes the Congress party’s elitist and dismissive attitude. Telangana police deny permission for BRS farmers protest in Nalgonda

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) remarked the 2025 Union Budget presented by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, February 1, has very little to offer to Telangana.

Sitharaman presented her eighth consecutive Union budget. This is also the 14th consecutive budget under the Modi rule.

In an X post, KTR said that the budget was a disappointment to the people of Telangana and hopes of fulfilling pending promises by the Union government continued to remain unfulfilled.

“Telangana couldn’t secure any special assistance beyond the mandatory finance devolutions and central grants,” his X post read.

KTR criticized the finance minister for focussing the budget to appease the people of Delhi, where Assembly elections are due to take place in a week.

“The budget appears to have focused more on the upcoming Delhi and Bihar elections rather than taking a pan-India approach,” KTR said.

He further said that the budget failed to honour the AP Reorganization Act, 2014, by not allocating funds for the Tribal University.

“It is unfortunate that 8+8 has once again amounted to ZERO in Telangana,” he said.

People in big cities ‘living simply’ will help Ladakh survive: Sonam Wangchuk

$

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk interacts with children during his visit to Hyderabad on Saturday, February 1.

Hyderabad: Climate activist and educational reformer Sonam Wangchuk said that the people in big cities “living simply” will help the people in regions like Ladakh to simply live, in times these when a choice needs to be made between the lifestyle and survival, to withstand the effects of climate change and global warming.

He was addressing members from the civil society and the students of Future Kids School in the Financial District on Saturday, February 1, about how the glaciers in the Hindukush have been melting more rapidly than ever, how it has been impacting the planet, and what needs to be done to mitigate the impending crises.

“The head of our mother earth is sick, down with high sweltering fever, and sweating down from her crown, with glaciers melting away and coming down as floods and flash floods. She is sick with burning pain everywhere. From California to Australia, forests are burning and rivers are flooding. She is sick with viral fever. Its time to wonder if we aren’t that virus. Its time to understand what could happen to mother earth if we don’t change our ways and carry on with our business as usual,” he said.

He spoke about how the ancestors of the people of Ladakh built irrigation channels from the mountains to make use of fossilized water to irrigate the water-starved valleys of Ladakh some thousands of years ago, to build villages and towns with greenery, where barley, wheat, apricot, plums, peaches and other crops are grown.

“They did that on the land that was technically uninhabitable. People of Ladakh didn’t just survive, but they thrived by living in harmony with nature,” he noted.

Talking about how things have drastically changed due to global warming which has accelerated the melting of the Himalayan Hindukush glaciers (around 50,000 in total), the third largest storage of frozen water in the world after the north and the south poles; he cautioned that if the glaciers are gone, “there wouldn’t be any river to take dip in, like during the Kumbh, and no drop of water to drink for months.

Giving the example of a village in the upper valley, he said that the village which never saw floods for 80 years, has seen flash floods devastating an area four times between 2006 and 2017, washing away 25% of the city and rendering 1,000 people missing during the 2010 floods.

“We didn’t contribute much in carbon emissions and had very little to do with causing global warming. But we are its first victims. Tomorrow it will be your turn. Use our fate as an alarm bell, so that you can save yourself and others who are suffering due to global warming,” he implored those living in the big cities.

“Simplicity will fix the problems and contentment is one quality which India can teach the world. That’s when we can be Vishwa Guru,” he said, also observing that while certain countries rose to the occasion and resolved to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 or 2050, India has set the target for 2070. It is like while some countries are planning to escape from the approaching Tsunami in 2-3 minutes, we are planning the same in 70 hours,” he felt.

He feels that the governments are not the only ones to blame, as they only cater to the needs of their citizens, for example, more demand for power.

“That’s why they are building coal-based power projects, building dams on the rivers. Today they are removing all the shepherds and their yachts to build massive solar power projects in Ladakh to meet his demand which is coming from the big cities like Lucknow and Delhi,” he pointed out.

He felt that the territorial disputes between India and China are the least of the worries for the people of Ladakh, and that the disputes between them were like two neighbours fighting over a small piece of land, towards which a Tsunami was fast approaching.

“Governments are a reflection of the people. If the people change their choices, the governments wouldn’t be able to make policies bad for the climate,” he stressed, also pointing out the fact that a simple aspect like the prices of onions once brought down the government in India.

He said “ballot and wallet” were the two weapons people had, to rule the rulers.

He spoke extensively about the SEMCOL school which he started in Ladakh, which is the world’s first carbon neutral school, constructed in such an architecture that the premises are warmer during the winters and cooler during the summers.

He spoke about how knowledge gained from high school level physics and geography were used to build structures where solar power has been the primary source of energy.

He also mentioned his innovation called “Ice Stupa,” the artificial glaciers which were able to partially mitigate the crisis of the melting glaciers, and the “Live Simply Movement” which he called “an SoS from Ladakh” to rest of the world, empowering the people to pledge for the planet whatever they could do to improve the climate situation.

He spoke about the movement for Ladakh to be included in the sixth schedule of the constitution, so that the people living there could devise legislations that could protect the environment, and govern the land inhabited by the local tribes through the district autonomous councils.

He remembered the support he received from people across the country, during his Climate hunger-strike for more than 3 weeks along with many, to draw the attention of the central government towards the climate change crises, and also during the march of the people of Ladakh to New Delhi.
