Telangana caste census BC panel claims GHMC failed to cover all households

Hyderabad: Telangana commission for backward classes chairman G Niranjan in his letter to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner, K Ilambarithi alleged that the caste census has not been properly conducted in Hyderabad.

He questioned why enumerators skipped home visits in certain areas, leading to the exclusion of some BC individuals from the survey.

He added that due to this negligence, some residents of GHMC areas were left out, lowering the recorded percentage of Backward Classes in urban Hyderabad. “We demand clarity from GHMC on the execution of the survey in the city and its outskirts,” Niranjan said in his letter.

Telangana caste census: 3.56 lakh Hyderabad households left unsurveyed

A government report on the Telangana caste census revealed that 3,56,323 households in Hyderabad remained unsurveyed.

The BC commission further noted that the majority of complaints from Hyderabad cited the absence of enumerators during the caste census survey. He demanded details of the enumerators deployed for the Hyderabad survey.

The commission has sought information on the total number of households in GHMC, surveyed homes, the number of enumerators, and their division-wise assignments, including names and contact details. “These details must be submitted within a week,” Niranjan stated.

RTA seizes 15 school buses in Hyderabad's Vanasthalipuram

Hyderabad: The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials in Vanasthalipuram have seized 15 school buses and vans for multiple violations, including lack of fitness, overloading, use of non-transport vehicles for student transport, and driver unawareness of road safety rules.

The crackdown follows the tragic death of a four-year-old girl who was run over by a school bus in Hyderabad’s Hayathnagar on February 6. The accident reportedly happened when the bus driver reversed the vehicle as the child was getting out of the minivan. The driver failed to notice her, and she fell under the rear tyre resulting in instant death.

RTA to launch daily school bus inspections in Hyderabad

As part of a special drive, an RTA team and motor vehicle inspector (MVI) inspected school buses across Vanasthalipuram.

“Several buses belonging to known schools in Hyderabad’s Vanasthalipuram were found violating safety norms including overloading students despite clear regulations. We have launched daily inspections to ensure compliance and safety,” said the regional transport office official.

According to reports, special teams will now monitor school buses daily during peak hours, focusing on vehicle fitness, driver licensing, and traffic rule adherence particularly preventing overloading and underage driving.

The regional transport office official further clarified that cases will be filed against schools operating unsafe buses in Hyderabad.

Gold rates in Hyderabad reach all-time highs

Hyderabad: Gold rates in Hyderabad have surged to historic levels by crossing the Rs 87,650 mark for 24-carat gold. The unprecedented rise reflects a growing trend in gold prices across India which is driven by global economic concerns and market volatility.

Gold rates in Hyderabad at an all-time high

As of today,  the price of 10 grams of 22-carat gold in Hyderabad stands at Rs 79,450 whereas 24-carat gold has soared to Rs 87,650.

This marks an increase of around 4 percent from last week when 24-carat gold was at Rs 84,000, while 22-carat gold stood at Rs 77,300.

Hyderabad’s spike in gold prices is part of a nationwide trend as other major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru also witnessing substantial increases. The rising demand for gold as a safe-haven investment has further fueled the surge in prices.

Key factors driving price surge

Several global and domestic factors are influencing the rising gold rates in Hyderabad.

They are economic uncertainty over the tariffs, economic deficits, and de-dollarization, Trump’s trade policies and geopolitical tensions.

The skyrocketing gold rates in Hyderabad may impact domestic demand as buyers closely monitoring price trends.

The future of gold prices will depend on factors such as US trade policies, Federal Reserve decisions, and global market movements. Any significant changes in these areas could lead to further fluctuations in gold prices.

KTR hits back at Rahul Gandhi; calls AICC 'All India Corruption Committee'

Hyderabad: The counting of the Delhi Assembly elections is still underway and while the Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to form the next government in the national capital with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to sit in the Opposition, the Congress has had a debacle with none of its candidates winning so far. Meanwhile, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR), in a sarcastic remark to Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi ‘congratulated’ him for making it easy for the saffron party.

“Congratulations Rahul Gandhi for winning the election for BJP, yet again… Well done,” reads his post.

He posted an old video of him speaking at the India Today Roundtable Telangana programme last year hosted by senior anchor Rahul Kanwal saying Rahul Gandhi is “the biggest asset of Modi.”

“As long as Rahul Gandhi was active, Modi would continue taking unilateral decisions,” he claims.

KTR stresses the importance of regional parties to defeat the BJP. “The only forces which are holding Modiji and BJP in the country today are regional parties and strong regional leaders like KCR, Stalin, Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee. Where did Rahul Gandhi find the spine to face Modiji?” KTR said.

AAP chief and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal lost to BJP’s Prawesh Varma in New Delhi constituency by a margin of 1200 votes.

Likewise, Delhi former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain lost to BJP’s  BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah from Jangpura and Karnail Singh from Shakur Basti respectively.

In a saving grace, Delhi incumbent chief minister Atishi Singh won from the Kalkaji constituency defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bhidhuri.

AIMIM fails to open account in Delhi elections

Delhi elections: As campaigning ends, AIMIM sets eyes on Okhla, Mustafabad

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), despite putting in its best effort failed to open its account in Delhi elections.

The party fielded two candidates, Shifa ur Rehman Khan from Okhla and Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad constituencies.

AIMIM failed in Delhi elections

The Mustafabad seat was won by BJP candidate Mohan Singh Bisht with a margin of 17578 votes. Mohan garnered 85215 votes defeating AAP candidate Adeel Ahmad Khan who secured 67637 votes and AIMIM’s Mohd Tahir Hussain received 33474 votes.

The seat was earlier won by AAP’s Haji Yunus and BJP’s Jagdish Pradhan in 2020 and 2015 respectively.

Hussain was a former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor. He was arrested five years ago under the draconian Unlawful Activities [Prevention] Act (UAPA) in connection with the infamous 2020 Delhi riots. He was recently granted parole by the Supreme Court to campaign for the Delhi elections.

AIMIM fielded Shifa ur Rehman Khan, the president of Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association, from the Okhla assembly constituency for the Delhi elections. While Amanthullah Khan got 88943 votes, BJP candidate Manish Chaudhary received 65304 and AIMIM candidate Shifa ur Rehman secured only 39558.

This is the third time in a row that Amanthullah Khan has won Okhla.

AIMIM tried best, left no stone unturned

AIMIM made sure no stone was left unturned for the Delhi Assembly elections. Party president Asaduddin Owaisi and Delhi election in charge and former MP Imtiyaz Jaleel campaigned ferociously via numerous public meetings, road corner meetings and paidal daura (campaign on foot) supported by social media outreach initiatives.

The party had planned to contest more seats but sources said it was confined to two – Mustafabad and Okhla – constituencies with a large number of Muslim population and better chances of winning.

Delhi elections: How the AIMIM helped BJP win Mustafabad seat

$

Delhi riots case Tahir Hussain seeks interim bail to fight assembly polls

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) failed to open any account in the Delhi Assembly elections, but the party might find itself being called the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ‘B team’ as its Mustafabad seat candidate Tahir Hussain split enough votes to allow the BJP to win. Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) lost the seat by a margin of over 17000 votes.

According to the Election Commission’s data, BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht won the seat with 85,215 seats, while AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan came second with 67637 votes. The AIMIM candidate came third by securing 33474 votes, which makes it clear that if the AIMIM had not contested the election, the AAP candidate would have sailed through.

The AIMIM’s choice of candidate Tahir Hussain being an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case is in all likelihood what helped it come third place. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly polls, the AIMIM contested only two seats – Okhla and Mustafabad – and lost both.

In the past, the AIMIM has been accused from all quarters of helping the BJP indirectly by ‘cutting’ Muslim votes. While it has always defended itself by asserting its right to contest elections anywhere as a party, this time however its critics will have clear numbers to show with the Mustafabad seat in the Delhi election results. A political analyst who did not want to be named said that this was expected, as the AIMIM was very ‘smart’ with its choice of candidates.

“Obviously Muslims have not forgotten the Delhi riots and people are still hurt about it. So naturally they would have voted for its candidate. And the fact that it had such an impact that the BJP won in a Muslim majority seat is quite bad,” the analyst added. AIMIM functionaries however defended the party. “What about the other seats we did not contest? Are we responsible for the AAP’s loss?” asked a senior party member.

In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, the AIMIM surprised everyone by winning 5 seats. It had contested a few dozen seats out of the 243 constituencies. While it had bigger plans of expansion, four of its MLAs eventually defected to other parties since then. Similarly in Maharashtra, it won two Assembly seats each in the 2014 and 2019 state polls. However, in the 2024 state elections, it managed to win just one seat – Malegaon, which it never won earlier.

Telangana govt stops new ration card applications at MeeSeva centers

Those who can't find their names in new ration card beneficiaries list, can still apply during the gram sabhas which will be held from January 21 in villages.

Hyderabad: The joy of applying for new ration cards was short lived for people as the state government withdrew its orders directing Meeseva centres to accept the applications from people.

On Friday, the Telangana government issued a memo to enable the MeeSeva centres to accept new Food Security or ration card applications across the state.

The district collectors across Telangana have been informed that apart from MeeSeva centres, applications for new Food Security cards or the addition of new members to the document could be collected through Praja Palana Seva Kendras (PPSKs).

The memo, signed by the Commissioner of Civil Supplies, instructed ESD MeeSeva to activate services across centers in Telangana. The directive aims to ensure that only eligible applicants receive Food Security Cards while preventing duplicate applications.

The state informatics officer, NIC, has been directed to enable the web service of the ration card database to Meeseva to enable ration card applications through the centres.

Hours later, the orders were withdrawn and the link provided to the Meeseva was withdrawn at 7 am on Saturday. Due to the communication gap, a lot of confusion prevailed among the Meeseva operators and common citizens who after waiting desperately for weeks started trooping at the Meeseva centre to apply for a new ration card.

The MeeSeva management turned people away, stating that the web service at the Falaknuma center had been withdrawn in the morning following orders from senior officials, as per the National Informatics Centre.

“We were communicated through a text message. We don’t know when the service will be reinstated or not,” said the operator.

An official said for the time being the people should approach the Praja Palana Seva Kendras (PPSKs) and apply for new ration cards.

Last year the State government launched 30 PPSKs in GHMC limits. It is to be seen if the PPSKs can handle the rush.

Telangana currently has 89.96 lakh ration cards covering 281.70 lakh units. Of these, 35.51 lakh are state-issued cards, while the remaining 54.45 lakh are National Food Security Act (NFSA) cards. Eligibility for Food Security Cards (FSC) is based on income, land ownership, and specific vulnerabilities.

Telangana HC raps RBI in Margadarsi case, hearing on Feb 14

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Friday, February 7, reprimanded the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for not filing a counter affidavit in the Margadarsi case. It set the next hearing for February 14.

The court stated the Supreme Court’s order for hearing in this case at the earliest. Former MP Undavalli Arunkumar informed the court that despite an order issued in October 2024 to include his name in the cause list, the registry failed to implement it. Acknowledging the concern, the bench reiterated its directive to the registry to comply with the order.

Previously, the High Court had dismissed a complaint filed in the Nampally court seeking action against Margadarsi and its owner late Ramoji Rao, under the Depositors Protection Act for alleged legal violations.

Challenging the ruling, Arunkumar and the Andhra Pradesh government had approached the Supreme Court. At the same time, Margadarsi and Ramoji Rao had also filed a petition in the apex court objecting to specific parts of the judgment.

SC overturns HC order in Margadarsi case

On April 9, 2024, the Supreme Court overturned the High Court’s decision, stating that the facts related to the collection of deposits needed to be ascertained. The court ruled that all parties, including Arunkumar and the AP government, must be heard.

In the Telangana High Court, a bench comprising Justice Shyam Koshy and Justice K Sujana took up the matter on February 7. Senior advocate Siddhartha Ludra, Arunkumar, and senior advocate L Ravichander participated virtually, while AP special government pleader Rajeshwar Reddy and Telangana public prosecutor Palle Nageshwar Rao appeared in person.

During the hearing, Ravichander pointed out RBI’s request for additional time to file a counter, but the court rejected the request, setting a one-week deadline for submission.

In August 2024 The Telangana High Court directed its registry to publish a notice inviting claims or objections from bonafide investors of Margadarsi Financiers. The notice will be published in English, Hindi and Telugu newspapers.

This order was issued by a division bench comprising Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Namavarapu Rajeshwar Rao while hearing criminal petitions filed in 2011 by Margadarsi Financiers and its late chairman Ramoji Rao.

The petitions sought a stay on criminal prosecution against them for allegedly collecting deposits from investors in violation of RBI guidelines.

Origin of the Margadarsi case

The Margadarsi case dates back to 2008 when former Congress MP Undavalli Arun Kumar filed a complaint that led the then united Andhra Pradesh government to initiate criminal prosecution against Margadarsi Financiers, a move later upheld by a magistrate court.

Former MP, Arun Kumar alleged that Margadarsi Financiers collected deposits from the public amounting to Rs 2,610 crores as of March 31, 2006.

He argued that the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) structure, being an unincorporated association, is not recognized as a juristic person and therefore prohibited from collecting deposits under Section 45S(1) of the RBI Act.

On December 31, 2018, the Hyderabad High Court dismissed the criminal prosecution against Margadarsi Financiers and its chairman, Ramoji Rao.

Arun Kumar challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, which found issues with the High Court’s ruling and sent the case back to the Telangana High Court for a fresh hearing.
