AIMIM MLA Kausar Mohiuddin meets ASI Superintendent Dr Nikhil Das, asks ASI to desilt Golconda fort

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has urged the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to restore heritage sites in Hyderabad including the Golconda fort.

Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin met ASI Superintendent Dr Nikhil Das on Wednesday, June 11, and sought the desilting of the Golconda Khandak surrounding Golconda Fort, which has reportedly not been desilted since India’s independence in 1947. Following AIMIM’s representation to ASI Headquarters in New Delhi, ASI Telangana conducted an inspection.

Mohiuddin revealed that a report is now being prepared to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC), after which Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will carry out the desilting work. He further requested the superintendent for an NOC for the construction of an the SKY Cable project.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Telangana Tourism will jointly implement the project. Mohiuddin also raised concerns over the state of mosques in the Golconda fort and Shaikpet that remain closed.

“The ASI team has scheduled an inspection later this week to assess the situation,” the MLA said in a post on X.

The AIMIM MLA also put forth the need to inspect and manage the surplus water outlet of Shah Hatim Lake in the Golconda fort arwa, which Das acknowledged. It may be noted that the lake has been massively encroached as well by locals, shortening its area over the last two decades.

Mohiuddin also made a proposal to clean the Katora Houz in the Golconda fort for which an NOC is being pursued. HMDA and Telangana Tourism will take up the project, with revenue from any tourism or related activities to be shared equally with the ASI.

Navy to consider naming submarine after Abid Hasan Safrani from Hyderabad. Image of Abid Hasan Safrani

Hyderabad: Freedom fighter and former Indian diplomat Abid Hasan Safrani’s niece Dr Ismat Lateef Mehdi has written to the Indian Navy to to name one of its forthcoming submarines after him, and the Indian Navy has positively responded to it. Dr Mehdi suggested the name ‘I.N.S Safrani’ for a submarine.

In a letter dated June 3, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi wrote to Dr Mehdi stating the same, and that her suggestion has been forwarded to the concerned authorities for consideration, subject to established guidelines.

Abid Hasan Safrani during his youth was a close associate of freedom fighter and founder of the Indian National Army Subhash Chandra Bose, with whom he had undertaken a submarine journey as well.

Dr Mehdi had written to the Chief of the Naval Staff on April 29, requesting him to name one of the upcoming submarines after Abid Hasan Safrani. “Abid Hasan Safrani, was an officer of the Indian National Army who introduced the slogan “Jai Hind” that is used for official purposes including the Indian Armed Forces salutes,” she stated.

She added that Abid Hasan Safrani was also the sole companion of Subhash Chandra Bose on his submarine voyage from Keil in Germany to Sumatra during World War 2. “The submarine voyage was part of Netaji’s plan to reach South East Asia to establish the INA. Safrani and Netaji undertook a mid-sea transfer from the German submarine to a Japanese one near Madagascar,” wrote Dr Mehdi.

During his early life, Safrani completed his schooling from St George’s Grammar School in Hyderabad and then joined Nizam College. However, he left the college after Mahatama Gandhi gave a call to join the struggle for freedom.

In 1935, he travelled to Berlin to pursue engineering as per the desire of his mother, who was also at the forefront of the freedom struggle. In Berlin, he met Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whose call to join the freedom struggle was promptly answered by him. He left his course and joined Bose as his personal secretary and interpreter.

Hyderabad: AIMIM to support Congress for Jubilee Hills by-poll

Hyderabad: AIMIM to support Congress for Jubilee Hills by-poll. Image of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Telangana CM Revanth Reddy.

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has decided not to contest the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election, to support the ruling Congress as part of the unofficial alliance, both sides are currently maintaining.

The AIMIM had supported the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which won the seat, in the December 2023 Assembly polls by putting up a candidate who drew a chunk of Muslim votes, which would have otherwise gone to the Congress.

The by-poll will be necessitated due to the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath, who passed away due to a cardiac arrest. Gopinath secured 80,549 votes, while Congress candidate and former Indian cricket team captain Mohd Azharuddin came second with 64,212 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Lanka Deepak Reddy also managed to secure over 25000 votes, while AIMIM candidate Rasheed Farazuddin came fourth with 7848 votes.

This time, however, the contest will not be easy going for the Congress, even if the AIMIM supports it, as the BRS will, in all likelihood, receive sympathy voters as well. More importantly, ex-BRS leader Baba Fasiuddin, who is now in the Congress, might give the ruling party a harder time due to his alleged involvement in the suicide of a local BRS leader.

“As the Congress helped the AIMIM in winning the MLC elections, we will reciprocate this time. The friendly relations with the ruling government will not change,” said a senior AIMIM functionary. He told Siasat.com that while it will help the ruling party, Fasiuddin’s case will have a negative impact for sure and may affect the result of the Jubilee Hills election.

In the 2023 Telangana Assembly polls, the AIMIM Had supported the BRS, which lost power to the Congress. The grand old party won 64 out of 119 seats, while the BRS got 39, the BJP 8, AIMIM 7 and the CPI bagged one. However, dynamics shifted soon after as the AIMIM ditched its ‘friendly’ status with the BRS and went on to support Congress candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

15 years on, no proper road to Hyderabad airport via Barkas, Shaheen Nagar

Photo of under developed road to Hyderabad airport

Hyderabad: It has been 15 years since the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad became operational, yet the authorities have failed to provide a proper connecting route to the airport through the Srisailam Highway.

The Chandrayangutta to Hyderabad Airport road via Barkas and Shaheen Nagar presents a countryside look in contrast to the rich look on the Aramghar-Shamshabad road.

The Telangana government, during the inauguration of the airport, had stated that all the roads leading to the Airport from the city will be developed to international standards. However, 15 years have passed since the promises, and there is no development activity on Chandrayangutta to RGI Airport roads except the road widening works.

“The road was widened long ago, but it was neither levelled nor any road laid over the acquired portion. The highway is just a single road as it was in the past,” said a resident of Shaheen Nagar, Mohd Jahangir.

On the Chandrayangutta-Barkas stretch, 111 of the 135 properties have been acquired and demolished by the GHMC; the remaining road widening works, roughly four kilometres, were taken up by the other agencies.

“The Aramghar-Shamshabad road and the Meerpet-RCI-Pahadishareef were developed, while the Chandrayangutta-Pahadishareef road developmental works were ignored. The government is extending a step-motherly treatment to the residents of the colony who are suffering due to narrow and untidy roads,” said Mubeen Ahmed, another resident.

On the road at Shamshabad, flyovers have come up to ease traffic and beautification works have been taken up on the road. “At Errakunta and Pilli Dargah, there are regular traffic jams due to narrow roads. Garbage lies unattended at different points on the roads, and sweeping is not done on the roads,” complained a resident of Errakunta, Mohd Baquer.

The image shows Telangana revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy holding high-level meeting on flood loss mitigation at the secretariat on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has constituted a high-level committee for taking steps to prevent loss of life and reduce property losses in flood-affected areas in the Krishna and Godavari basins. The committee has been asked to submit its report within a week, based on which the disaster response mechanism in the rural areas will be strengthened.

The high-level committee comprises the Hyderabad Disaster Response Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) commissioner, the disaster response commissioner, the director general of the fire department, the director of the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC), and the commissioners of medical and health, irrigation, roads and buildings departments.

Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy held a meeting at the Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat with all the district collectors and higher officials on Thursday, June 12, on the steps to be taken to address possible floods, given the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more than normal rainfall this monsoon season.

Reddy directed the officials to take steps to permanently relocate the people living in the flood-affected areas and safer areas, and to build Indiramma houses for them on a war footing. He said the ICCC would be given user IDs for monitoring and sending alerts to the districts in case of any extreme weather events.

He asked the collectors to prepare the flood loss mitigation plans as per the local weather factors by June 30.

He directed them to conduct awareness programmes in flood-affected areas in collaboration with volunteers, the national disaster response force, the fire and the state disaster response force.

He said flood response plans needed to be prepared in the vulnerable mandals, with emergency evacuation procedures, location of relief camps, and helpline numbers in case of floods. He asked the officials to arrange for boats, life jackets, emergency and dry food kits in advance.

Irrigation officials have been asked to inspect bunds, small and medium canals, and make repairs wherever needed.

Revenue, irrigation, police, medical and health departments have been asked to work in coordination, and control rooms had to be set up to monitor the situation. Station rescue teams will be set up in high-risk areas and trained on speedy evacuation and emergency response in the event of floods.

Using public address systems, officials will spread awareness among the public, while mobile health teams equipped with essential medicines, water purification tablets, and sanitation kits will be deployed for use during emergencies.

Medical college interns protest over unpaid stipends in Karimnagar, Telangana

Hyderabad: Students from private medical colleges across Telangana have voiced concern over the non-payment of stipends. Many allege they are being paid meagre amounts, while others say they have not received their stipends for over two months.

Interns from various districts claim that despite repeated requests, the medical college authorities continue to ignore their demands. They further allege that the institutions are not complying with Government Order 59, issued in 2023, which mandates stipend payments to interns and postgraduate medical students.

As per GO 59, the stipend for interns must be increased by 15 percent every two years, with the current prescribed amount set at Rs 25,906 per month.

Siasat.com has accessed a representation submitted by interns from private colleges to Telangana health minister C Damodar Raja Narasimha, seeking urgent intervention.

Interns at the Telangana medical colleges said that the one-year internship is crucial, as any delay would cost them an attempt at the NEET PG entrance exam.

Speaking to Siasat.com, Jagat*, an intern at a private college in Khammam, said, “The stipend hasn’t been paid for the past two to three months. We’ve submitted representations to the college authorities and the Director of Medical Education, but there’s been no response.”

Anudeep*, an intern from a Hyderabad-based private college, added, “Some faculty members make baseless remarks implying that we haven’t attended our postings. These claims can be used to penalise us.”

Jayant*, another intern from Khammam, said, “Even though the GO clearly stipulates the stipend amount, colleges often charge an additional Rs 5,000 from students during admission. That money is what’s used to pay interns during the final-year internship.”

Some interns also alleged that their logbooks were not signed during this period, and that certain colleges are not adhering to the stipulated one-year internship duration.

Ajit*, a student at a private medical college in Karimnagar, said this issue has persisted since the formation of Telangana in 2014. “After COVID, the stipend was reduced to Rs 2,000, and that’s still what we’re being paid,” he said.

Others have reported being threatened with reduced attendance for demanding the stipend. Lokesh*, an intern from a college in Sangareddy, said, “We’ve been warned that our biometric attendance could be tampered with if we persist. This directly affects our future.”

(*Names of students have been changed to protect their identity.)

A team of Telangana Medical Council uncovers fake doctors operating clinics and hospitals in the name of first-aid centers in Devarakonda town of Nalgonda district on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Hyderabad: In a highly concerning development, a team of doctors from the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) have found that compounders and quacks disguised as doctors have been operating allopathic hospitals in the name of primary care and medical treatment, posing as medical practitioners in Devarakonda town of Nalgonda district.

TGMC vice-chairman Dr Gundagani Srinivas and TGMC member Dr Vishnu conducted inspections on fake hospitals in Devarakonda, Nalgonda district on Thursday, June 12.

During the inspections, a person named Rajeshwara Rao has been operating a clinic in Devarakonda under the name ‘Rajeshwara Rao Clinic,’ and a person named Padmavati has been running a clinic in Mall in the name of ‘Srinivas Polyclinic.’

A person named Ramesh, has been running Padmavati Hospital, and has posing as an expert with MBBS and MD in General Medicine. When questioned by the Medical Council members, he claimed to have pursued his MBBS in Russia, but has not submitted any certificates related to his degree.

A person named Jahangir who has been claiming to be a physiotherapist with a fake Bachelors in Physiotherapy (BPT) degree; was found to have been running an allopathic hospital prescribing allopathic medicines.

A person named Santosh was found to be prescribing allopathic medicines under the name of ‘Maharshi Clinic’ on a prescription in the name of a MBBS doctor named Venkat Reddy.

It has also come to the TGMC’s notice that a person named R Ramesh, who is only qualified as an optometrist, has been running ‘Akshara Hospital,’ performing eye surgeries and administering antibiotics.

The inspecting team found ‘First-aid’ boards outside the clinics, but allopathic medical clinics being run with fake and unqualified doctors.

They were found to be giving people high doses of antibiotic injections, steroid injections, and tablets regardless of the patient’s illness.

The inspection team also found antibiotics, steroids and other Schedule H drugs being sold without a qualified doctor’s prescription and without pharmacists.

They said they will file a complaint with the Drug Control Authority and the Pharmacy Council against the registered pharmacists concerned perpetrating wrongdoings.

As per the National Medical Council (NMC Act), only those who have completed MBBS and are registered with the Medical Council are allopathic doctors/medical practitioners. This is the exclusive right of these graduates. Dr Srinivas reminded that anyone else is ineligible to treat the patients.

He stated that without pursuing medical education as per the law, without passing the exams, without registering with the Medical Council, just by taking a few hours of first-aid training and registering with the rural medical associations and private medical practitioners’ associations; doesn’t qualify them as allopathic doctors/medical practitioners as per the NMC Act.

Dr Gundagani Srinivas informed that a case will be registered against them under the sections 34 and 54 of the NMC Act, and a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh will be imposed on them, along with one year imprisonment under the Act.

“There is no law that allows an allopathic clinic to be established without a license under the name of a first-aid center to provide allopathic medicine within a limited period. Allopathic medicine within the scope of the first-aid center is imaginary.. only fiction.. not reality,” Dr Srinivas stated.

Haj 2025: Meningitis vaccine mandatory for Saudi citizens, expats

Hyderabad: Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL), a leading vaccine manufacturer based in Hyderabad, has announced a major partnership with global pharmaceutical giant GSK plc to advance the development of altSonflex1-2-3, an innovative vaccine candidate targeting Shigellosis—a severe form of bacterial diarrhoea that poses a significant threat to children under five, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Under the agreement, Bharat Biotech has in-licensed the vaccine candidate from GSK, which has already completed Phase I and II clinical trials in Europe and Africa.

These early-stage trials demonstrated a favourable safety profile and strong immune response, with no safety concerns reported in African infants as young as nine months—the primary target population. Interim results from 2024 confirmed that the vaccine met its pre-set immunogenicity goals.

Bharat Biotech will now take the lead on further development, including Phase III clinical trials, regulatory advancement, and large-scale manufacturing. GSK will continue to support the project by assisting with clinical trial design, securing external funding, and contributing to strategies for access, delivery, and commercialisation.

The altSonflex1-2-3 vaccine has been developed using the Generalised Modules for Membrane Antigens (GMMA) platform, which utilises bacterial outer membranes to deliver the O Antigen to the immune system.

This innovative approach offers broad serotype coverage and is considered one of the most advanced Shigella vaccine candidates globally.

Currently, there is no approved vaccine for Shigella, despite the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance and the significant disease burden in vulnerable populations.

Bharat Biotech’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Krishna Ella, emphasised the urgent need for scalable, science-backed solutions for low- and middle-income countries.

He highlighted Bharat Biotech’s existing expertise in vaccines for diarrhoeal diseases, including rotavirus, typhoid, polio, non-typhoidal salmonella, cholera, and paratyphi.

GSK’s Chief Global Health Officer, Thomas Breuer, noted that the collaboration combines GSK’s scientific innovation with Bharat Biotech’s manufacturing capabilities, aiming to accelerate the delivery of a much-needed vaccine to prevent illness and save lives worldwide,
