Hyderabad based engineers design solution to hard water problem

Hyderabad: There is a saying in India “Jal hi Jivan Hai“; besides drinking, water is essential for bathing, laundry, dishwashing, and cooking. However, the situation for this life resource is less than ideal in the country.

As per a recent report from WHO, India ranked a lowly 120 out of 122 countries for its water quality and 133rd out of 180 nations for the availability of .

With an increase in population and urbanization, there is limited availability of freshwater supplied by municipal authorities. The remaining population has to often to rely on water extracted from underground sources or supplied by water tankers.

This water contains dissolved impurities and a higher concentration of minerals. When levels of dissolved impurities (TDS), and particularly calcium and magnesium are higher than recommended levels, this water is termed as “Hard Water”.

Hard Water adversely affects your expensive plumbing fixtures, bathroom fittings, kitchenware appliances and household equipment such as hot water geysers, steel pipes, washing machines, etc due to corrosion and formation of lime scales. Hard water may also lead to health problems such as dry and itchy skin, rough hair and eventual hair loss.

Having faced personal difficulties with hard water, Hyderabad based Uday Nadiwade, and Rajesh Saraf installed water softeners in their respective homes but failed to get the desired results.

They found that the solutions available in the market required high capital investment, consumed a large amount of electricity, wasted a lot of water and came with prohibitive maintenance costs.

The engineering duo decided to take the matter in their own hands and began researching and developing a solution for the hard water problem which was better, faster, cheaper than the competition by a big margin (4X). After a year of research, rigorous testing and development, the duo launched D’Cal Hard Water Softener in July 2018 as a low-cost and environmentally friendly solution to treat hard water.

Instead of using the traditional method of removing minerals like calcium and magnesium that make water hard, D’Cal uses food-grade engineered compounds to eliminate the stickiness of calcium ions, ensuring that calcium does not stick to walls, buckets, or Installation of is a hassle-free process as it does not require any additional fittings, plumber or electricity. The user needs to drop the bottle-shaped softener machine into an overhead water tank. Besides being cost-effective, the device is also eco-friendly as there is no wastage and consumes zero electricity.

Each unit of D’cal costs approximately Rs 3,600, as compared to the conventional plants which cost approximately Rs 30,000. The device is ideal for household tanks with an annual consumption of 3 lakh of water and lasts for approximately 10 to 12 months.

The unit stays at the bottom of the tank and starts floating when the compound in the device is exhausted.

“D’cal needs no maintenance and there is no need for regeneration (like replacing the filter). In conventional hard water treatment solutions, approximately 70% of the water turns soft and the ions shift to the rest of the wasting it due to the high content of salts”, said Nadiwade. He also added that every customer can test the effectiveness of the device in their own house, with their water by themselves.

They also received the Telangana Governments “Best Innovation award in for 2019”.

The device is available on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, The Better India, etc. on D’Cal’s website.

Murthy wishes his legacy to live

One-man collection of brass items that shines like gold

Author: Mohammed Hussain

Hyderabad: Is it a museum? I wondered when I first entered the house of Mr. Yeguna Krishna Murthy in Trimulgherry.

It is a different kind of house.  It is better to put it this way: it is a house with a feel of a museum. That is the impression I got as I entered along with our cameraman Mohammed Minhaj Adnan the house of 79-year-old Yeguna Krishna Murthy.

The atmosphere of the house takes one back to the times passed by. The first jolt is the huge door which is made of sandalwood. “I have brought this door when I had shifted to Hyderabad from Chennai, my hometown…It reminds me of my mother,” he said with a tinge of nostalgia.

A gangalam (the big vessel usually made of brass) greets you when you enter the house.  The beauty of this vessel is that it doubles as a coffee table.

The love of the owner with brass is visible everywhere. On the walls and in every corner of the house there is some object which is made of the ‘yellow’ metal.  Their presence gives a feeling of walking into a ‘golden room.’

Mr. Murthy catches my scrambling eyes and says how much he adores the metal which has an ancientness to it.

In an interview with saisat.com, Mr. Murthy said with pride, “My house is no less than a museum. Antiquities are not just objects. Each one of them has a lovely story to tell.”

There are more than 900 items of brass and copper from across the globe at his house which he prefers to call a ‘home museum.’

Mr. Murthy believes in the adage that behind every success of a man, there is a woman. He said that if he had succeeded in what he was passionate about it was because of not one but two most beautiful women—one my mother and the other my wife.  “My mother laid down the foundation of this collection and later my wife who allowed me to continue with my passion. In fact, she was a great help,” he said.

“I started working on my collection when my mother had to travel from our home in Chennai to live with my family in Hyderabad. She carried all the vessels with her.

“Collecting antique is a tough job,” says Murthy. He has had to travel to remote parts of the country.  “People used to get suspicious when I insisted on buying their discarded items, even when they were in the worst of conditions,” he recalled.

At his residence, there is also a door to the temple room. “It has different ‘printing blocks’ laid out on it by my wife,” said Murthy.

He added that getting these blocks needed great observation, search, and perseverance. “I used a truck to transport my collection when I shifted my base from one place to another. She was always there when the time came to arrange and rearrange them,” he said with melancholy.

Now that his mother and wife are no more he is worried about the future of his collection. “I have no idea where my museum will be after my death. I have no children,” he added.

Speaking about the passion behind his collection, he said, “I want people, especially children, to learn about the past and enjoy the evening tea by talking about the background of each item…The only thing which gives me the utmost happiness is a lively discussion on my antique pieces,” he signed off.

The readers who wish to see the collection can log on to http://ykantiques.com/ and enjoy the beauty of the antiquities gathered by one man. mohammedhussain.reporter@gmail.com

Forlorn temple in Hi-tech City

Hyderabad: Laxman Bagh 18th century temple at Rai Durgam in Hi-tech City is not an eyesore, it rather looks like a wretched memory of devotees who once prayed. Although construction and demolishment are lined alongside gateway to the temple it is standing still in an epiphany which reminds us of neglected heritage.

A graffiti on the temple wall reads “I am orphan adopt me,” with a tag #Hyderabadheritage, alongside, collage of wall advertisements can be seen on the entire arched boundary wall of the centuries-old temple on the Old Bombay Highway.

The road is taken by techies who travel from central and western parts of the city, it makes them think of nothing but pity. “I think it is perhaps the oldest temple in the Western Hyderabad,” said Mohan, a resident of Manikonda who works for Verizon in Hitech city, “I take this road every day and look at the temple, sometimes there is rubbish and sometimes construction waste, surely no one takes care of Hyderabad heritage,” he added.

“No one is allowed to enter inside the temple through the old gate because it is in a poor state,” said the gardener of the temple who was too shy to reveal his name.” He added, “This age-old Balaji temple belongs to the Pittie family who ingratiated themselves into business with the Nizam of Hyderabad.”

Beyond the arched walls of the temple, there are gardens, stone pavilions a well full of water and vegetation is everywhere.

“This ensemble of buildings and open spaces is considered one of the finest examples of a total heritage environment,” Omer Khalidi describes Laxman Bagh in his book, Guide to Architecture in Hyderabad, 2009, “There is an 18th-century Hindu temple within the complex, and consciously and dedicatedly maintained, unlike civic buildings. Other notable features of this complex are a well laid out garden with a well-proportioned, turn of the twentieth-century wooden pavilion.” mohammedhussain.reporter@gmail.com

No water problem for Hyderabad

Hyderabad: TRS working president and former minister KT Rama Rao today said there will be no water shortage to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

In his twitter, KTR said the TRS government was taking all steps to ensure that the people of the capital city get waters for drinking without any problem. The Kaleshwaram project was nationalized by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and water was being come downstream and would cater to Hyderabad drinking water needs.

The Annaram barrage has abundant floodwaters coming from Pranahitha and being lifted from Medigadda barrage and Kannepally pump house.
Stating that Medigadda barrage received 7.50 tmc and Annaram barrage 5 tmc waters by Tuesday evening, KTR expressed happiness on this. Lifting of waters from Kannepally pump house was going on and the officials succeeded in procuring 11 tmc waters from Pranahitha floodwaters in 10 days using five motors despite rainfall shortage. “Though Godavari river has a low level of waters, we could impound 11 tmc waters, which can irrigate one lakh acres”, he said. By starting all the motors, all the parched lands could be brought under irrigation, KTR said.

The TRS working president said that within three years after Kaleshwaram project was launched, this could be attributed to the vision of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, he added. KTR reiterated that Kaleshwaram project will supply abundant waters to Hyderabad city. Though Chennai and other metro cities in the country were facing water problems, Hyderabad has no such chance, he felt. “We are able to see that Hyderabad does not face Chennai-like water problems, he added.

Lakdi ka pul gets its signature sculpture

Author: Mohammed Hussain

Hyderabad: Once a traffic police booth and parking place, the space after the Lakdi ka pul Bridge has turned into a most creative piece of artist’s imagination. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation constructs a sculpture of Lakdi ka pul as part of the city beautification.

The area got its name from a bridge that was made of wooden blocks during Nizam’s period. Lakdi ka means “made of wood” and Pul means “bridge” in Hindi and Urdu.

By noticing the name and its popularity the GHMC have constructed a signature sculpture bridge which shows the well-known Lakdikapul. Soon will be a new landmark and signature for Lakdikapul.

According to Urban Biodiversity Wing of GHMC Khairatabad Zone, The Lakdi ka pul which witnesses’ heavy traffic will get a new look with the installation of a sculpture of a Lakdi ka pul and vertical garden, a modern arts sculpture of human and beautiful butterflies have been attached to the bridge, “Also it will be a pleasant change to the commuters and locals, from the earlier,” Officials added.

Mr. Rajesh from AMAR, fibre company stakeholder and contractor who had made the bridge speaking to siasat.com said, “The Bridge has been constructed with a concept of remaining Hyderabad’s Lakdi ka pul name, adding to it a sculpture is made, “soon it’s going to be a new selfie point” He added.

While informing about the construction details of the bridge s Mr. Rajesh told that the height of each pillar is 8 feet, 1 feet width, Railing is of 1.2 meter, and 14 meter Length, around 35 workers were involved in constructing the entire bridge which is made by FRP (fibre) which will remain till decades, all we need to do is paint.

Officials say that the open space is being decorated with the shade and saplings, exclusive pathway for walkers and colorful illumination. They believe it may attract tourists because hundreds of tourist buses drop their passengers from other states at Lakdi ka pul circle.

Mohd Muqtar a shop owner near the Lakdi ka pul circle said, “As there are many hotels and shops near the circle, the vacant space was being used for parking vehicles.” mohammedhussain.reporter@gmail.com

Hyderabad witnessing spurt in diseases with onset of monsoon

Hyderabad: With the onset of monsoon in Hyderabad, cases of vector and water-borne diseases have witnessed a surge in the city.

Speaking to ANI, Superintendent of Hyderabad-based Government Fever Hospital, Dr Shankar on Wednesday said that from the past one week, the cases in the outpatient department has increased to 1,000 patients in which 225 suspicious viral fever cases have been reported.

“Jaundice cases have also been increased in this month after the monsoon hit the city. In July till date, as many as 50 jaundice cases have been reported in the hospital. Waterborne diseases like typhoid have also witnessed a surge. In the last 15 days, two dengue cases and one chikungunya case have been also treated in the hospital,” Dr Shankar informed.

According to the doctor, in coming days, at least till September, there will be a more drastic increase in viral fever and the vector-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria.

The doctors are advising the public to eat a healthy diet and keep themselves away from any such place that breeds mosquitoes.

Dengue, malaria and chikungunya are the most common diseases caused during monsoon which spreads through mosquito bites or parasites born in stagnated water.

The cases of such diseases increase in monsoon season due to the problem of water clogging which makes it a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Hyderabad to get water from Yellampally barrage by Aug

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Managing Director M Dana Kishore said in a press meet on Wednesday that Yellampally barrage source is sufficient to draw 172 million gallons per day (MGD) continuously throughout the year without any problem to Hyderabad city.

Dana Kishore said, presently, Hyderabad was drawing water from Godavari river’s source at Yellampally barrage and Krishna river’s source from Nagarjunasagar reservoir.

The major supply of water from these two sources was 442 MGD and in addition, small quantities were being presently utilised from the Osmansagar and Himayathsagar sources, he said.

He said the capacity of Yellampally barrage was 20 tmcft. The present storage capacity is 4.87 tmcft. The drawl is at 0.83 tmcft per month. Under the Kaleshwaram project scheme, the Yellampally barrage is considered as the major balancing reservoir. It receives pumping supplies of about 180 tmcft from the downstream barrages of Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla.

As the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme was already commissioned, the Yellampally barrage was bound to receive its full level capacity shortly at 20 tmcft. The carryover flows to the tune of 160 tmcft will be utilised from this source over a period of time.

Hence, it maintains the storages at full reservoir level for longer period in a year. In fact, Yellampally would become perennial source of water supply to city of Hyderabad by August 2019, he said.

In addition to the Kaleshwaram Lift Water Supply supplementation, Yellampally barrage itself exists on main Godavari River, the inflows during this monsoon have already begun and bound to continue the inflows into reservoir from its self catchment area during this monsoon, he said.

Managing Director of HMWSSB M Dana Kishore Addressing the press meet held on Wednesday at Khairatabad Water Board office.

Explaining the reliability of Krishna source from Nagarjunasagar reservoir, the present storage is at 126.46 tmcft. The drawl from this source to Hyderabad city is only at 1.375 tmcft per month, he said.

Dana Kishore informed that for ensuring equitable distribution and to meet the drinking water supply needs in peripheral circles, HMWSSB has taken up a project at a cost of Rs 1,900 crores and successfully completed and put into operation. Under this project 56 reservoirs of total 277 ML capacity with 2100 Km length of network are created and the earlier online supplies / bulk supplies are now streamlined with regular service reservoirs storage and distribution network on par with core city.

HMWSSB has taken up the drinking water supply network project for 190 villages situated within ORR limits under Annuity Mode of Contract. The project envisages construction of 164 Reservoirs out of which 139 were completed and the balance reservoirs are nearing completion and about 1400 Km length of Pipeline has been laid and expected total completion by end of August 2019, he said.

Govt urged to prevent hate crimes, mob lynching
  • UMF demands Heightened Security, Precautionary Measures for Mob Lynching Top Priorities
  • Voice Against Wakf Discrepancies, Ignored Protection of Wakf Monuments

Hyderabad: The United Muslim Forum urged the Government of Telangana to issues Strict Instructions to the Police department and Intelligence Department for ensuring stringent precautionary measures to prevent and deal with Mob Lynching and Hate crimes. Such crimes must be dealt with iron hand, they emphasized.

United Muslim Forum, a confederation of different Muslim organizations, on Wednesday urged the government to take precautionary measures to avoid communal turbulence in the State ahead of Eid ul Azha, also known as Bakrid.

Addressing the media during a Press Conference at Media Plus Auditorium in Hyderabad on Wednesday afternoon, the Forum urged the government to control and tab the potential violence in the name of Gau Raksha by self-styled Gau Rakshaks and prevent mob lynching, harm, loss of life and any possible tension between the two communities.

Speaking on the occasion, the forum leaders advised the Muslim community to refrain from sacrificing cows to respect the sentiments of the other communities. Lambs, goats, and other animals permissible for sacrifice under the Indian law could be slaughtered.

Adding that “all religious festivals must be celebrated with peace and harmony”, the forum recollected the directives issued by Supreme Court of India last year to curb the mob lynching and called upon the government to ensure its implementation in the state.

Incidents of hate crimes on the basis of religious identity is on the rise in the country. Mob Lynching is destroying secular fabric of our Country. Stringent laws must be made by the State and Central Governments to ensure protection of Life and Property of Citizens of our country referring to the brutal mob lynching of a Muslim youth Shams Tabriz Ansari in Jharkhand. They also demanded the Central government to pay Rupees one crore to his family, a government job and housing.

The forum also appealed the Government of Telangana to “protect historical  religious monuments in the State especially the Makkah Masjid, Royal Mosque of Public Gardens and other important properties & Waqf institutions in the state”.

The forum also condemned the absence of heads of institutes for longer periods in many minority welfare institutions and termed these institutions “almost non-functional” adding that “the Government has failed to provide any suitable head to some institutes for longer periods.”

The immediate approval of Cadre strength of all Minority Institutions by the Government of Telangana was also demanded. The forum pressed that in the last three years, Wakf board requests for appointment of 410 staff members of different categories are pending before the Government of Telangana.”

“A request for minimum of 50 Staff of Immediate Requirement is also not fulfilled.”

“The government of Telangana, must ensure that Wakf board meetings are to be held every two month as stipulated in wakf Rules. Currently, since last February, no board meeting were held. There are many issues related to Election of members that are still pending.” it was stated.

The forum also stated that there were dues and delays in providing monthly honorarium to Imams and Moazzans of Masjids and demanded that their honorariums be released with immediate effect.

United Muslim Forum demanded the reconstruction of Masjid-e-Ek Khana and Other Mosques which were demolished at different places in the state. It urged the State government to explore alternative ways and means to protect Wakf and other religious institutions when they are demolished to take up the road widening and development works.

The forum blamed the government for “ignoring the sentiments of Muslim Community” adding that “in the process of road widening and land acquisitions for the Government projects, the government is approving demolition of Mosques”. It also blamed the inaction of Wakf Board staff to act and protect the Wakf properties and other institutions in such instances referring to the demolition of Masjid-e-Ek Khana at Amberpet in Hyderabad as “a clear example”. mohammedhussain.reporter@gmail.com

Hyderabad: Is packaged drinking water safe?

Hyderabad: Have you ever considered whether the packaged drinking water supplied in the houses and offices is healthy or not?

GHMC has put a question mark about the purity of packaged water.

According to the statement made by the officials of the Food and Safety Department of GHMC, if the water supplied by 1000 water plants is tested, not even 30 would be found suitable for supplying potable water.

Giving the details of the regulation of setting up of water plants, the officials specified that the first and foremost condition is to obtain permission from the Revenue Department.

After this permission is obtained, a microbiology laboratory has to set up for which a microbiologist has to be appointed. His duty is to examine the water produced in the plant from time-to-time.

It is also essential for any water plant to obtain the certificate from the Bureau of Indian Standards about safety and purity of water.

If all the above-mentioned criteria are applied, not more than 30 plants would be available to fulfill these condition.

The major problem for running a water plant is that every year, each such plant has to pay Rs. 2.5 lakh for the renewal of the certificate. It is deplorable that there is no such mechanism to ascertain whether the water is potable or not and also there is no system of dealing with complaints about testing the purity of drinking water.

Telangana govt tables new municipality bill in state assembly

Hyderabad : Telangana government introduced the new municipal legislation on Thursday in a special two-day session of the legislative assembly.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao introduced the bill in the assembly on Thursday. Among other provisions, the bill seeks to increase the age of superannuation for government officials including professors in medical and dental colleges of the state.

After the bill was introduced on 18th July, a day’s time will be provided for the legislators to study it. After deliberations, the same will be passed on July 19.

The legislative council is also scheduled to meet on 19th July to pass the bill.

Once the legislature is passed, municipal elections are likely to be scheduled in the first week of August.

Last week, Chief Minister stated that the New Municipal Act should be brought in to eradicate corruption.

He said, “The New Municipal Act should be made to serve the people and to take care of their problems and issues. The Act should be stringent and help the development of towns in a better way.”

Last week, a two-day session was called by the legislative assembly to pass the new Municipality Act through an official statement.

The decision to conduct a special session to pass the bill, however, was criticized by the opposition. BJP spokesperson NV Subhash demanded that the duration of the session to be extended to 10 days for discussion to discuss the ongoing water situation in the state.

One the other hand, Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy said, “The High Court has directed the state election commission to conduct the municipal elections on the existing laws. This is a wasteful act of the state government.”

Author: Mohammed Hussain

Hyderabad: Bonalu, now a State festival, will be celebrated in Lal Darwaza, Hyderabad, on Friday.

Bonalu is spread over about a month days beginning with a major procession that starts from Golconda Fort. It was celebrated with zest on July 14. The second event of the festival begins at Lal Darwaza, near the historic Charminar will be held on July 21. The final event takes place at Mahan Kali temple in Secunderabad on July 28 where the female protagonist makes predictions about the political scenario in the State to the changing of the weather.

The Lal Darwaza Bonalu that coincides with the festivities at Akanna-Madanna Temple Festival at Shah Ali Banda is a reflection of Hindu-Muslim unity since it was patronized by the Sixth Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan following the greatly devastating floods of 1908.

The Lal Darwaza Bonalu Festival is in fact divided into two parts—one that starts from Lal Darwaza and other from Akkanna-Madanna temple in Shah Ali Banda. The Lal Darwaza Temple is also known as Simhavahini Sri Mahankali Devalayam. For over a century Simhavahini Sri Mahankali Devalayam located in Lal Darwaza, Old City.

The devotees from various parts of the city and surrounding districts and also from other states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu would be attending the Bonalu festival and its procession in huge numbers.

Speaking to siasat.com K Venkatesh Vice President, Simhavahini Mahankali Temple said, “Every year the devotees are increasing. Last year their number had touched 2 lakhs. This year we are expecting them to go up to 2.5 to 3 lakhs.”

“As you are aware the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has declared Bonalu as the State festival.  For the last about five years, it is being celebrated in Delhi. It was also celebrated in the U.S. by the All Temple Association of the Old City who is staying there. This year it would also be observed in Maharashtra,” he said.

Satish Kumar, President of Akanna -Madanna said that the Bonalu festival is the festival of communal harmony which shows the culture of Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of Hyderabad and Telangana state. With this aim on after Pooja Mahankali, priests of Akanna-Madanna along with chief guest perform flower tribute and present Chadar to the Dargah which is here in front of the temple. We also paint and maintain Dargah.”

Through this festival, we are spreading the culture all over India. When the state was Andhra Pradesh this festival was grounded and when it separated this festival has become the state festival of Telangana state. After the separation, this festival is being celebrated for the last 5 years also in Capital state Delhi, and recently we have celebrated in Delhi this month. Last year All Temple Association of old city President had also celebrated the festival in the US. This year we are going to celebrate the festival in Maharashtra also, he added.

He also told that after the separation the TS Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao participated in the festival and the first time the gold Bonam (vessel) was taken since then many dignitaries were taken gold Bonam during the festival. mohammedhussain.reporter@gmail.com
