Vendors in Hyd not amused by Paytm’s new PoS

Hyderabad: Digital payments company Paytm is distributing point-ofsales (PoS) machines to medium-sized vendors and retailers in the city but the users say since the new facility entails surcharge the customers are avoiding its use.

“I am asked to collect the surcharge from the customer for using the PoS machines. And the same time, Paytm wants me to pay Rs 2,800 annually for maintenance of PoS which is a burden I have no capacity to carry,” said Ravi, a general store owner in Khairtabad.

So far the payments company used QR (scanning code) codes to conduct transactions free of cost. But now the company has got into card payment at merchant locations in the city. Paytm wants the customer to use the two systems–PoS tradition and mobile PoS terminals. That way it would make more money.

Traditional PoS terminals work on GPS or landline while mobile terminals work with smartphones. Most of the devices distributed to small and medium-sized vendors and traders are operated via smartphones attached to the PoS.

“The machine is a gift. But we have to pay an annual charge for its maintenance,” said Mohammed, a paan shop owner at Road No. 1 Banjara Hills.

Paytm spokesperson recently said that the company will continue to expand its digital payments ecosystem. It will enable small merchants to accept payments digitally, using both QR codes and PoS systems at locations where people prefer card payments. In May last year, Paytm launched payments bank intending to double its customer base to 50 crore by 2020. Currently, Paytm has a user base of 35 crore.

Police pickets have been posted at MANUU, UoH

Hyderabad: Police pickets have been posted at the Maulana Azad National Urdu University and University of Hyderabad here following the scrapping of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

As a precautionary measure, the pickets were posted in the wake of recent developments (over Kashmir issue), a senior police official said, adding there have been no issues pertaining to law and order.

He refuted reports that prohibitory order under CrPC Section 144 has been clamped in the area. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) empowers an executive magistrate to prohibit an assembly of more than four persons in an area.

The police official said they have promulgated Section 30 of the Police Act, 1861, for the regulation of public assemblies, processions and meetings, adding the prohibitory orders under Section 30 are imposed every month on regular basis and there was nothing new in this.

UoH administration sources said no protests were held on Wednesday and Tuesday in the university and that peaceful atmosphere prevailed. University authorities planned to revise the circular issued earlier prohibiting any protests and agitations in the campus until further orders as section 144 was in place, the sources said.

The circular was issued based on a communication from Gachibowli police that no protests be held as prohibitory orders under Section144 are in place.

However, with the Cyberabad police commissionerate clarifying that no such orders have been issued, the university planned to revise the circular (revoking assembly of five or more persons), the sources said.

The normal regulations in the campus, including specifying places for protest, would be in place, they added.

On Monday, some members of the Students Federation of India and some Kashmiri students in the University of Hyderabad, also known as Hyderabad Central University, tried to stage a protest against the Centre’s decision to abolish Article 370 but they were dispersed by university security personnel, who cited implementation of prohibitory orders issued by the police.

Sheep prices likely to hit a new high in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha which will be celebrated on 12th August, sheep prices are likely to hit a new high.

It is anticipated that Hyderabad may witness supply-demand mismatch as the demand for sheep is likely to increase this year. Sheep traders believe that people may avoid big cattle due to possible hurdles by certain groups.

Rain is another factor which impacts the prices of the sheep as transporters charge more during the rainy season.

The prices of sheep are likely to increase by 20% compared to last year.

The cost of each big sheep is expected to be between Rs. 25000 and Rs. 40000.

It may be mentioned that many online portals have come up with an idea of an online market for sheep. However, people prefer buying it after visiting the conventional market to ensure the health of the animal.

In Hyderabad, lakhs of animals are sold on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha festival. These animals are brought into the city from various States including, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Helping Hand Foundation provides facility

On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, Helping Hand Foundation (HHF) will make arrangements for sacrificing and distributing the meat of the sheep weighing 13-15 kg against payment of Rs. 8000.

The meat will be distributed among poor families and patients who are facing life-threatening diseases.

Hyderabad boy develops smart bangle to make women feel safe

Hyderabad: A young man in Hyderabad has come forward with an innovative solution in the form of a ‘smart’ bangle to enhance the security of women.

Gadi Harish, aged 23, along with his friend, Sai Teja, has invented a bangle which generates shock and sends live location and warnings to relatives and police if a woman is in danger.

The device, ‘Self-Security Bangle for Women’ is activated when a woman tilts her arm at a particular angle. The tilt action gives an electric shock to the aggressor holding the woman’s arm and at the same time, sends its live location and alerts to relatives and nearby police stations.

Gadi Harish said, “I have developed a project named self-security bangle for women, this device is completely different from the devices available in the market. I have developed this project with the help of my friend, Sai Teja.”

“The main concept of this project is to give security to women as nowadays we observe a lot of rape and missing cases of women.”, Harish added.

With the prototype ready, the 23-year-old is now requesting assistance from the government to complete his project and fulfil his objective of making women safer.

Hyderabad (Telangana): Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was known as a leader who would leave no stone unturned to help those in distress, and two such women – Zainab Bee and Ameena Begum – recalled how the BJP stalwart freed them from the clutches of slavery in the Gulf and helped them return home to their families.

Swaraj breathed her last on Tuesday night at the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Speaking to ANI, a teary-eyed Zainab said the news of Swaraj’s demise devastated her and recalled how she was helped by the former External Affairs Minister.

“I could not sleep the whole night when I was informed that Sushma Ji is no more. It is very upsetting for me. She helped me so much. I could not eat or sleep. I had no hope that I will be able to come to India but only because of her efforts, I was able to see my family in India,” she said.

Describing the atrocities she faced while stranded in Saudi Arabia, Zainab said, “I was abused by the people and made to work in three houses without food and water. I did not have any money as they were not giving me any money and also was not allowed to talk to my family in India.”

Ameena, who was rescued last year from Dammam in Saudi Arabia, said, “I requested Sushma Ji to help me come to India. She helped me a lot and in 2018, a year after I went to Saudi Arabia, I was able to come to India. She rescued me from the atrocities I was facing there. I am very upset that Sushma Swaraj Ji is no more. This is very disheartening to me. She helped a lot of people.”

Meanwhile, Amjadullah Khan, a local leader and activist who had approached Swaraj with many human trafficking cases, also condoled the loss of the BJP stalwart, who, he called, an “iron lady”.

“It is very sad that Sushma Swaraj is no more. I had the opportunity of working with her on problems faced by NRIs, especially Hyderabad city women who were stuck in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, and nearly 200 cases were solved. She was very down to earth and she was an iron lady. She was respected by all, even the opposition parties and members of all religions, which is not easily seen these days in the new era of politics,” Khan said.

Swaraj was admitted to AIIMS following the deterioration of her health.

According to sources at AIIMS, Swaraj was feeling restless at 9 pm on Tuesday and reached the hospital at around 9:30 pm in an ambulance. A team of doctors tried to revive her for 70 to 80 minutes but failed in their attempt. Swaraj was declared dead at 10:50 pm.

The 67-year-old was appointed the Foreign Minister in the first term of the Narendra Modi government in 2014. She opted out of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections citing ill health.
