Amaravati farmers write to MoS Reddy on prevailing situation

Hyderabad: After farmers from Amaravati sent a letter to MoS, Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy briefing him about the prevailing situation in Andhra Pradesh, the latter said that Andhra Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is yet to take a
decision on whether to keep Amaravati as state capital or not and that farmers who have given land for development must not bear any loss.

“He (Andhra CM) said that it must be decentralised. Farmers who have given land for development must not bear any loss. We have taken the responsibility to help them,” the Union Minister said while speaking to ANI.

Farmers also spoke to ANI over the issue and narrated their ordeals.

“We are farmers from Amaravati. We have been protesting in Andhra Pradesh from the past 19 days peacefully with women and kids on the road. We are protesting as the government is making very bad moves to cheat us. When Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were divided, Andhra did not have a capital. Amaravati farmers gave the 33400 acres of land to the government. The agreement between farmers and the government was that we give our 4800 sq yards of land to the government and the government will give us a plot of 1250 sq yards to us which is 1/4th of what we have given,” said Naveen, a farmer.

“Government promised that they will build capital in the other 3/4 th piece of land. Roads and buildings were made in some of those lands. Now, the new government wants to take away the capital to Visakhapatnam and are trying to breach the agreement. If that happens, farmers neither cultivate nor develop the plots as the capital is being moved. Who on this earth can save us?”

Naveen also claimed that the local police is trying to provoke them and arrest them. He also said that at midnight, the police barged into the houses of the farmers and arrested them. “Ministers are also calling farmers paid artistes,” he added.

Notably, yesterday also farmers were protesting against the proposal of three capitals of Andhra in Mandadam, while the people of Tulluru village continued their “dharna”.

Anguished by the proposal to shift the capital from Amaravati to Visakhapatnam, the farmers of the region recently wrote a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking a direction to “stall the process of shifting the capital city” or
else grant them “permission for mercy killing”.

People of 29 villages in the region have been demanding Amaravati to be retained as the sole capital of the state.

Asaduddin Owaisi explains why he is against CAA

Hyderabad: Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Hyderabad MP disclosed the reason for his stand against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.

CAA aims to convert India into Hindu Rashtra: Owaisi

During the address at Sangareddy town, Owaisi said that he is not against granting citizenship to the persecuted people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. However, it should not be done on the basis of religion. He further alleged that CAA aims to turn India into a Hindu Rashtra.

Owaisi also made an announcement that a massive rally against CAA will be organized on January 10. On January 25 midnight, he will unfurl the national flag at historic Charminar.

Anti-CAA protests

It may be mentioned that ever since CAB became CAA, protests are taking place across the country. Yesterday, in Hyderabad, million march took place wherein thousands of people participated.

It seems that protests intensified in Hyderabad after the Central Government decided to conduct NPR. Many political parties alleged that the exercise is the first step towards NRC.

CAA-NRC Protest:Deccani humour to fore with ‘baigan kay baataan’

By Syed Hurairah

Hyderabad: Hyderabadi humour is known across the world, courtesy its Diaspora, as both acerbic and delightfully self-deprecatory. And when one combines Hyderabadi humour with protests, in this case the anti-CAA, NRC and NPR agitation at Dharna Chowk, what ensues is a delightful, yet devastating attack on the system.

The so-called Million March on Saturday was abuzz with placards which carried slogans taking swipes and potshots at the Modi-Shah political duo. And to add to the hilarity, the word ‘baigan’ was thrown into the batter of protests.

A group of youngsters carried a banner with a large picture of a degh (cauldron) which is synonymous with making biryani.

Biryani mangoo toh aur detaun, aur document maangey to wahi degh mey daalke teen time detaou, nakko baigan ka CAA, NRC, NPR’ (Ask me biryani and I will give you more, ask me for documents, I’ll put you in the same cauldron and give it back to you again and again).

Another one, against a pink background, an allusion to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, read thus: ‘KCR Moo Kholo NRC No Bolo’ (Open your mouth KCR, say no to NPR).

A woman protester carried a placard with just two words and an illustration. Simple, direct and dismissive, it read: ‘Documents hona?’ with a sketch of a brinjal or eggplant.

Another, with yet another baigan reference, read: ‘Pichhle saal ki thand ki topi nahi mil rahi, Baigan 1971 ke documents kahan se laana’ (Couldn’t find last winter’s warm cap, baigan how will I get documents from 1971).

And finally, a placard which equates the sanctity of ablutions with national integration, albeit with a touch of humour: Hum to wazu bhi nai tootne detey mulk kya khaak tootne dengey (We don’t let our ablutions break, letting the country break is a far cry).

Asaduddin Owaisi reacts to brutal violence at JNU

Hyderabad/New Delhi: Asaduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Hyderabad MP reacted to the brutal violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) that leaves many students and teachers injured.

He tweeted, “In solidarity with the brave students of JNU.

This cruel attack is meant to ‘punish’ JNU students because they dared to stand up

It’s so bad that even Union Ministers are tweeting helplessly. Modi Sarkar must answer why cops are siding with goons”.

JNU violence

On Sunday night, several masked individuals said to be both male and female thrashed students, including girls and teachers inside the varsity campus with wooden and metal rods.

Two office-bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh – who was reportedly hit over the eye with an iron rod, received severe injuries and accused RSS’ student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for the rampant violence.

“I have been brutally beaten up by masked people. I don’t know who they were,” Ghosh said as she broke into tears while blood flowed profusely from her head. She has been taken to the AIIMs.

JNUSU General Secretary Satish Chandra was also injured in the attack.

JNUSU Vice President Saket Moon also accused the ABVP of leading the attack, which was bolstered by outsiders.

Hostel rooms, and lobbies were vandalised during the assault while several vehicles standing on roads were damaged.

There were terrifying moments for students on campus as masked men and even women with faces covered, barged into hostels, ransacked rooms and beat up the frightened students.

A girl student recounted those moments in tears: “I was in the room and I heard loud noises and I saw many girls coming. I asked everyone to lock their rooms. We were in terror. While I was trying to take a video clip, they hit me with a stone.”

Amit Shah orders inquiry

Union Home Minister Amit Shah ordered the Delhi Police to take all necessary action to control the situation in the campus, and also ordered an inquiry into the matter.

According to officials, Shah spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik following the violence.

“Union Home Minister has spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner over JNU violence and instructed him to take necessary action. Hon’ble minister has also ordered an enquiry to be carried out by a Joint CP level officer and asked for a report to be submitted as soon as possible,” the Home Ministry said in a tweet.

Political leaders condemn the violence

The violence was condemned by leaders across the political spectrum.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar – both JNU alumni – on Sunday condemned the violence.

“Horrifying images from JNU- the place I know and remember was one for fierce debates and opinions but never violence. I unequivocally condemn the events of today. This government, regardless of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students,” Sitharaman, who did her MPhil from JNU, said in a tweet.

Jaishankar, who has an MA in Political Science and an MPhil and PhD in International Relations from JNU, also took to Twitter to express his reaction.

“Have seen pictures of what is happening in JNU. Condemn the violence unequivocally. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the university,” he tweeted.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who reached the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to meet the injured JNU students, later said, in a tweet, that there was “something deeply sickening about a government that allows and encourages such violence to be inflicted on their own children”

Her brother and former party chief Rahul Gandhi attacked the Central government.

“The brutal attack on JNU students & teachers by masked thugs, that has left many seriously injured, is shocking. The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear. #SOSJNU,” he said, in a tweet.

CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, also a former JNUSU leader, also condemned the violence, and the party’s student wing, the Students Federation of India, called for a nationwide protest on Monday.

CPI-M leader Brinda Karat also reached the AIIMS to meet the injured students.

Jamia students reached the Delhi Police HQ at ITO to protest, while the Jadavpur University Teachers’Association called upon all sections of society to condemn the “heinous act”.

Owaisi trying to become political Sultan of Muslims: BJP leader

Hyderabad: BJP leader T Srinivas accused AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi of trying to become the “political sultan” of Indian Muslims by not speaking the truth on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“Owaisi, in order to consolidate his vote bank and become the undisputed political sultan of the Muslims in India chose not to tell the truth and did not care to tell his followers what in reality the CAA and NRC stand for,” Srinivas told ANI here.

The BJP NRI Committee Chairman further said that the AIMIM MP had shown his frustration by opposing the CAA.

“He has revealed his utter frustration on the pro-minority bills (CAA) which was passed in Parliament under the leadership of Narendra Modi. Why this open rebellion now? Has his faith in the Indian constitution started wavering because the BJP-NDA has started passing them in both the houses?” Srinivas said.

He reminded Owaisi that his brother, Akbaruddin Owaisi’s statement had once caused “nearly riot-like situations,” and added, “Owaisi always swears by the Constitution of India and the Article of freedom to preach and practice one’s religion.”

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. NRC seeks to identify illegal immigrants in the country. It was rolled out in Assam on the directions of the Supreme Court where 19 lakh people were excluded in the final list.

Hyderabad erupts over JNU campus assault

HYDERABAD: Protests broke out at three university campuses in Hyderabad on Monday against the attack on students of Delhi’s Jawaharlal University by a masked mob.

The students of the Hyderabad Central University (HCU), Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) and Osmania University staged protests, condemning the JNU violence.

Mild tension prevailed on the campus of the Osmania University due to the protests by the Leftist student groups and Akhil Bharatiya Vidayarthi Parishad (ABVP), blaming each other for the JNU violence.

The students affiliated with the People’s Democratic Students Union (PDSU) and Students Federation of India (SFI) also staged a protest in front of the Arts College on the Osmania University campus, condemning attacks in JNU and demanded action against the guilty.

The protesters raised slogans against the ABVP, holding it responsible for the attacks on the JNU students and teachers. They also set afire an effigy of the ABVP.

Later, few ABVP members also staged a protest condemning what it called pre-planned violence by the Leftist groups. “The attacks were orchestrated by the goons belonging to the Left parties and they are trying to malign us,” said a protestor.

The protesters, holding the ABVP flags, also burnt an effigy of the Leftist groups. They were later dispersed by the police, who was keeping a close watch on the situation to prevent any untoward incident.

Students and faculty members of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) also took out a protest march, condemning the attacks on the JNU students and teachers and demanding action against the guilty.

“Family members of faculty also joined the protest march,” a university official told IANS.

At the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) protests broke out late Sunday night. Raising slogans against the terror unleashed on the JNU campus, students marched through the campus. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

The protesters blamed the ABVP and RSS for the attacks and targeted Delhi police for their inaction. “Policemen barged into the Jamia Millia Islamia to attack students and at the JNU they were mute spectators to the terror unleashed on hapless students and faculty members,” said a student.

The SFI has called for more protests on Monday evening.

“Rise in rage against the saffron terror,” reads SFI poster.

Condemning the JNU attacks, a group of students also staged a candlelight protest late Sunday night at the Ambedkar statue at Tank Bund in the heart of Hyderabad.

Action against Million March organisers betrayal of people

HYDERABAD: The organizers of the Historic Hyderabad Million March of Saturday afternoon against the CAA and NRC have been booked on various charges of violating rules, specified especially for the march by the Telengana Police.

The Convenor of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Mr Mushtaq Malik and others have been slapped with more than 20 various charges by City Police in various precincts. The Police claim that permission was granted only for 1000 people to meet at the Dharna Chowk.

The turnout, however, was several fold more, as more and more people, specially youth, irrespective of religion and faith moved in wave after wave to the venue and surrounding areas to protest peacefully.

There is more than it meets the eye, in the Hyderabad Police slapping charges against the JAC chairman and others.

Apparent is a certain amalgamation of interests between Telangana Chief Minister, KCR garu and his Asad Bhai, AIMIM Chief. You scratch my back I scratch yours.

And the keepers of law and order are by tradition ever at the behest of powers to be. Otherwise why the charges? The march was exemplary in all aspects, not a pebble was in the air, strict discipline, protection to women participants, guiding traffic and respecting police personnel on duty.

It may be noted that the police initially was dilly dallying in allowing the march. The JAC days that they had to approach the High Court for permission after they were refused permission and made to make several visits to the concerned police departments to get the permission and every time they had to return with no certain answer.

Perhaps the mammoth and spontaneous upsurge of a leaderles youth calling the shots at Saturdays’ Hyderabad Million March has ruffled few feathers .

For Assad Bhai a bolt from the blue.A never imagined scenario. It is like the earth buckling  under his feet. Every trick in bag was put to test by vested interests to derail the march and mislead the public. To evoke the famous saying of British parliamentarian of yore, Edmund Burke, “pray do not imagine that those who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field.”

The new inhabitants are force to reckon with. Young in mind and spirit, drenched in the desire for inclusiveness, aware of their democratic rights, devoid of any revanchism are now on the march.

KCR is shrewd enough to grasp the stark and unsavoury reality, that not weighed down by any baggage, the youth of Telengana, like their counterparts nationally and globally will not take dictation from political interests and not dance to political bands.

The preamble of our constitution boldly spells out the right of every Indian  to Justice,Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

No one can destroy others freedom without losing his own.

MANUU stands with JNU students and teachers

Hyderabad: In continuation with the solidarity of students’ protests across colleges and universities in the country, the MANUU fraternity, Hyderabad led an emergent peaceful march on the brutal atrocities and rampage conducted by masked goons of ABVP and their allies last night on the students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Around two hundred teachings, non-teaching staff and students led a procession from the footsteps of Directorate of Distance Education to the main gate of the university.

Holding a variety of placards in their hands, they chanted slogans of save students and teachers – save university etc., alike. The procession started around 12 noon and ended at 1:30 afternoon. The family members of staff also joined the march in large number.

Meanwhile, Prof. Mohammad Fariyad expressed his anguish and pain on such developments taking place in universities where no one is safe.

“It is a matter of deep concern for all students and teachers, especially, for females who are not even secured in university campuses now” said Prof. Shahida while addressing the gathering.

Dr. Firoz Alam vehemently condemned the shameful act conducted on JNU students and teachers. “They are the victim of raising their voice against fee hike in that university, it is that simple” he added.

Dr. Sayyed Hammad Hashmi also expressed his feelings on the occasion. Prof. Mohd. Shahid lamented on the situations emerged in the country in recent days and the way voices of teachers and students are crushed by organized goons.

“We are raising our concern because of these public-funded universities, but, we will be losing such spaces if we allow ourselves to destroy our institutions” he concluded.

The protest dispersed with National Anthem in the last.

Delhi Police gave safe passage to JNU attackers: Owaisi

HYDERABAD: AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday alleged that the Delhi Police not only allowed masked goons to carry out brutal attack on students and faculty at JNU for one and half hours but also allowed them safe passage after the mayhem.

The Hyderabad MP strongly condemned the attack and described those involved as “anti-national” elements.

He asked what message the Modi government want to send to the world by allowing such an attack in the national capital.

“This violence was perpetrated by cowards who definitely had support from ruling party. There is no doubt that those involved had green signal from powers that be,” he told reporters.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief said the attackers had covered their faces but their ideology was exposed.

“Are they trying to say that they were aliens who came from Mars,” asked Owaisi on claims by the ABVP that they were not involved in the attack.

Owaisi earlier tweeted that he is in solidarity with the brave students of JNU. “This cruel attack is meant to punish JNU students because they dared to stand up.”

“It’s so bad that even union ministers are tweeting helplessly. Modi sarkar must answer why cops are siding with goons,” he asked.

Not the Time for Politicians and their Politics: Hyderabadi Women Against CAA-NRC, NPR Protests

Hyderabadi women urge KCR to clarify state’s stand on NPR-NRC

Hyderabad: A group of women organizations on Monday urged the Telangana state government to clarify its stand on NRC and NPR implementation in the state.

Addressing a press conference under the association of women through a non-religious, non-political platform ‘Hyderabadi Women on CAA-NRC-NPR Protests ’at Media Plus Auditorium in Hyderabad on Monday evening, women representing different organizations and NGOs from across the state urged the Telangana Chief Minister to “boycott the NPR and NCR, just like the Kerala CM did recently.”

They urged the CM to “pass the bill in the assembly, and reject it in Assembly, and testify the government’s support to the public against the centre’s unconstitutional move.”

The women strongly condemned the attack on JNU students in Delhi and added that “the onslaught on students and the unprecedented barbarism on students, has made the women across the nation restless. We share the grief and pain of the attacked students and their parents”. They demanded the central government to “vacate their seats” as “the government was chosen on public votes and not to beat up the public that voted it to power, the public that is our children, and the students of India.”

Speaking on the occasion, All India Muslim Personal Law Board Member Ms Asma Zohra said “The government claimed to power with our votes, and if it fails to protect our sons and daughters, it must dissolve and vacate the corridors of power. The fight and the protests are against unconstitutional moves, and to protect the constitution that is why the government must retract its unconstitutional decisions and restore peace in the nation.”

Another social activist Rafia Nausheen “Urged the citizens to refrain from submitting the documents demanded by the central government for NRC and NPR” as even minuscule errors or clerical mistakes in providing information can help the government to land them in detention centres. “Even if there are even clerical mistakes in the documents, they will be invalidated and applicants based on submitted records will be moved up to the detention centres”, she said.

The women, claimed they are working in synergy with other organizations beyond religious and political lines, against the unconstitutional acts.

Advocate Mary Alphonsia and Sister Amala Rani of Immaculate Convent also expressed her support to the sisters of the country.  Even elderly women participated in the press conference and broke down while referring to the attacks on JNU students on Sunday night. They said “we were proud of JNU, AMU, Delhi University, and universities like these. But now, our students, our children and professors and teachers are at risk of being attacked.”

“The government is stressing on Beti Padho (Educate the daughter(s)). When there is no security for our daughters, how are we even safe and how will we even think of sending them to colleges and universities”, they questioned. The recent incidents about NPR, NCR are extremely disturbing and must be withdrawn”, they urged.

Another elderly woman said “India is a traditional country. Women here migrate to villages, districts and states after marriage. How can they go back and fetch documents for NRP and NRC? There are already too many issues like domestic violence, marital issues and other troubles. The government’s decision on NPR, NCR have encapsulated the people in fear, and have further heightened the problems of women across India.”

In response to a question of political representation, they said “this is not the time for politicians and their politics. Mixing politics with a public cause may sabotage the movement”, they warned. “The international image of the country has been tarnished due to recent events, and must be restored.”

They saluted the Hyderabad Police for their “support and cooperation during the Million March held in Hyderabad” and concluded the press conference by singing National Anthem while holding placards with protest slogans.

“We are happy how there was not a single incidence of manhandling by the police during this march.  “We are proud of Telangana Police,” they said fervently before voicing slogans Hyderabad Police Zindabad (Hail Hyderabad Police) and sang the national anthem to conclude the press conference.

Dr. Jasveen Jairtt, activist and writer Mrs. Vimla Morthala, Ms Padmaja, Ms Tahniyat, Prof. Rafeeq, Dr. Aakhila Khamoshi, Dr Ayesha Javeen, Prof. Jameelunnisa, Mrs Sumaiyya and others were also present during the conference.

The JAC says that they had to approach the High Court for permission after they were refused permission and made to make several visits to the concerned police departments to get the permission and every time they had to return with no certain answer. A few legal minds have questioned the wisdom behind the police action. Was it a honey trap. Why did they in the first place not stop the crowds? Some are of the opinion that all this but to harass and discourage further such actions by any others other than the AMIM.

Million March

Perhaps the mammoth and spontaneous upsurge of a leaderless youth calling the shots at Saturdays’ Hyderabad Million March has ruffled few feathers.

For Assad Bhai a bolt from the blue. A never imagined scenario. It is like the earth buckling under his feet.

Every trick in the bag was put to test by vested interests to derail the march and mislead the public to make them believe the March has been called off.
