Nihad Amani and Mohammad Hussain

Hyderabad: If you thought that the private sector in Telangana has not been chipping into the State government to fight the scary situation created by the coronavirus epidemic, you are only partially right.

The mega private sector companies are slowly waking up to the reality that the state government alone cannot fight and should not be left alone to fight the unexpected spread of the disease.

A small survey carried out by siasat.com showed that several firms have begun to loosen up their purse strings. For instance, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Company Limited (MEIL)  announced a donation of Rs 5 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). MEIL MD P.V. Krishna Reddy called on Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and handed him over the cheque.

Similarly, Shantha Biotechnics’ promoter, K. E. Varaprasad Reddy, presented to CM a cheque of Rs 1,00,00,116 towards the CM Relief Fund.

Meanwhile, KNR Constructions chief K. Narasimha Reddy also presented Rs 1 crore cheque for CMRF on behalf of the company.

Medical Companies like Laurus Labs had also lent help by providing one lakh hydroxychloroquine tablets. This anti-malarial drug has been recommended by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) as preventive medicine for those who face a high risk of coronavirus infection. CEO Dr. Satyanarayana and Executive Director Chandrakanth Chereddy had also handed over a cheque of Rs 50 lakh to CMO relief’s fund.

Meenakshi Group had also come forward to give Rs 1 crore to the CMRF. Meenakshi Group Chairman K.S. Rao and MD C. Sivaji handed over the cheque to Cabinet Minister K.T. Rama Rao.

Companies like GPK Exports and Imports owners Phani Kumar and Karnala Sailaja Reddy have donated 4,000 N95 masks for the use of Telangana state government doctors.

To counter the spread of COVID 19, Heritage Foods Limited has decided to contribute Rs. 1 crore in its major operating areas across the country for the fight against coronavirus.

Also, the Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) donated Rs 1 crore to the CM’s Relief Fund. CREDAI representatives handed over the cheque to Minister K.T. Rama

Superstar of the South Mahesh Babu has donated Rs 1 crore CMO’s Relief Fund and on the other hand, Pavan Kalyan gave away Rs. 50 lakh each to Relief Funds of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

In the meantime, Tollywood film Bombhaat actor Nithiin handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to CMO’s relief fund.

According to the government sources what has been donated so far is just a drop to fight a monster that is growing by the day. “We hope that people with money would come forward to donate more and more.  The cause is gigantic and human. We need assistance from every quarter,” they said.

Telangana will be coronavirus-free by April 7: KCR

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Sunday said there are 70 coronavirus positive cases reported in the state while 11 have been cured and tested negative and they shall be discharged on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, Rao said: “All the necessary diagnosis is done and the patients are being discharged after the formalities. 58 people are under treatment.”

Quarantine period

“25,937 people, who came from other countries, are under the government’s supervision. The quarantine period of these people will be completed by April 7,” he said.

“After April 7, there will be no coronavirus patients if no new cases are reported from now. Self-control is very important in this lockdown period,” he said.

Talking about farmers’ yield, the Chief Minister said: “All the grains will be bought from the villages. Rs 3,200 crore will be guaranteed for the market. The crop should be brought according to the given coupon date. If we maintain this discipline, we can control the spreading of coronavirus.”

“Farmers have to get their passbooks when they come to give their crops. The money will be sent online. I am observing that the villagers are putting fences at the borders of their village. It is appreciable that they are taking care of their village without allowing anyone,” he added.

The Chief Minister, however, said they should know who they have to allow and whom not to. He added that it is better if they arrange soaps and water so that the person from outside can sanitise himself and enter the village.

Centres for buying fruits

Five hundred centres are being arranged all over the state for buying fruits, he said.

“For COVID-19, all the concerned like doctors, nurses, medical graduates will form a pool. They are welcome to serve the State at any point of time. Anybody who is spreading false information will be strictly punished. No mercy to them. The government is monitoring it,” said Rao.

Cordial community relations marked Nizam era till its end

Cordial community relations marked Nizam era till its end
Dasu Kesava Rao

The ruling and the majority communities lived in harmony, the Razakar atrocities being treated as an aberration. Father’s best friends included a number of Urdu-speaking officials and non-officials. At the height of Razakar movement, these people posted a sentinel at our place with an assurance ‘You have nothing to fear, Rao saab, as long as we are around.’

March 26, 1942.

On that memorable Thursday, we (meaning parents and brothers, I was not born yet) arrived at Kacheguda railway station to a strange new world, new people, new culture and an unknown language. We travelled to Secunderabad by Naizam bandi (Nizam’s Train) and then shifted to Bolaram-Falaknuma suburban train.

Our maternal uncle, an engineer at the ordnance factory facing the station, received us, after customs clearance. Two tea stalls, existing side by side, offered ‘Hindu tea’ and ‘Muslim chai’- a sort of cordial polarization. Tongas were everywhere.

Soon we moved to what proved out to be our happy home for 16 long years, Anand Bhavan, skirting Barkatpura chaman (garden). We occupied two of the four flats, Marathi and Tamil families the other two while Kannadigas lived in the outhouse, giving it a cosmopolitan complexion.

Our neighbourhood was peopled by the elite and the reputed. They included Nawab Hoshiyar Jung, Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, Ali Yavar Jung, Shah Alam Khan, Olympian soccer player Lateef, ministers and bureaucrats.

Dasu Kesava Rao in his younger days

I was born in what is today Badruka College of Arts and Commerce near Kacheguda station. My schooling began at Stanley Girls High School. We kids played in the circular chaman and the chinthala thopu, where the APHB quarters stand today. Sherwani-pyjama was my favourite dress.

Barkatpura those days was a veritable Garden of Eden, dotted with avenue of flower bearing trees, palatial buildings and havelis. It was free of din and bustle. I remember seeing mule-drawn coaches at the havelis of the nawabs. I was told they carried food from the Nizam’s central kitchen. I do not know how true it was.

My brother used to commute to Osmania University by the rokke (stop) bus. The conductor would shout ‘rokke’ to help passengers board or alight at any point. The RTC buses came later.

We had two cars, Ford/ Chevrolet of the 30s and Chrysler convertible of the 40s vintage. The latter was a head-turner, a stunner and a black beauty. Once or twice, we were baffled to find policemen saluting as we drove by. We learnt later that they mistook it for an identical car from the royal stable of such luxury cars as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Daimler, MG etc.

We regularly enjoyed full moonlight or early morning drive to Osmania University to marvel at the majestic Arts College building or to feast on the landscape gardens. Few would believe that the campus roads were carpeted with marigold flowers and dry leaves shed by the avenue trees. The dot neat concrete road from Barkatpura to the University was laid in the forties in a record time for the visit of the Viceroy, Lord Wavell. Even Madras or Bombay did not have the kind of underground drainage system and road network like Hyderabad’s. Nizam College, where my maternal grandfather studied, was affiliated to Madras University.

My childhood remembrances: Jawaharlal Nehru passing in front of our house, Mysore Maharaja Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar declaring open Veerasaiva Vidyavardhak (VV) hostel building opposite the RBVR Women’s college and a dying elephant at in the Uttaradi Math in Lingampally.

Mother would often recall how as a child of four I had nearly endangered our lives. Sword wielding razakars roamed the place at night raising slogans. My mother watched the scene through the gaps in the window when, it seemed, I cried ‘amma em choosthunnavu?’ Her blood froze in panic.

The sprawling park in Bagh Lingampally was once a big pond for the nobility to splash about. It abounded with countless tamarind trees presenting an intimidating picture. Our house teemed with relatives from Andhra and my job was to take them to Charminar, High Court, Public Gardens (it had a zoo attached) and the Salar Jung Museum, now relocated on the banks of the Musi.

We had every year Urs, a mini-numaish where small time traders spread their wares on either side of the road stretch between the station and Kacheguda chowrasta. On display were toys, hairpins, clips, lanterns, kitchenware and a variety of fancy goods. Happy faces glowed in lantern light as they scanned the items. The show presented a dazzling nightly spectacle.

We, former Bezwadians, sadly missed idli-karapodi, upma, and dosas. Udupi-type hotels were few and far between, but the quality of food was very poor. Ambis Cafe, opposite Nampally station, was one of the oldest which had survived till the turn of the century.

Rickshaws, bicycles, pets and radio sets were required to have license. Radio licenses were renewed in post offices while Hyderabad Municipal Corporation issued them to cycle and rickshaw owners. This system continued till the early 70s. Kandil points existed all over the city where cyclists refilled their ‘kandils’ with kerosene.

Hyderabad had dual currency system – the British Rupee, also called BG or kaldaar, and the Nizam’s, known as Osmania sikka or haali. We reserved BG for use outside the Nizam’s dominions.

Government offices closed on Friday and the administration was generally free of corruption. It was said you could get your things done by buttering the man with a mere chai and zardawala paan.

The ruling and the majority communities lived in harmony, the Razakar atrocities being treated as an aberration. Father’s best friends included a number of Urdu-speaking officials and non-officials. At the height of Razakar movement, these people posted a sentinel at our place with an assurance ‘You have nothing to fear, Rao saab, as long as we are around.’ Mother would often recall how as a child of four I had nearly endangered our lives. Sword wielding razakars roamed the place at night raising slogans. My mother watched the scene through the gaps in the window when, it seemed, I cried ‘amma em choosthunnavu?’ Her blood froze in panic.

I could go on and on about the city I was born and grew up in. Once a Hyderabadi, always a Hyderabadi. That is its enchanting spell.

Funeral without family: Hyd man laid to rest by health workers

HYDERABAD: In a sad and shocking case, health workers in Hyderabad performed the funeral of a 74-year-old Khaja Hameeduddin, who became the first person in Telangana to die of the deadly coronavirus.

Soon after his death, blood samples were collected. He was tested positive with COVID-19 and his grieving family has been under quarantine at their resident in Khairiatabad.

Because of this, no family members was able to attend the funeral of their loved one and the mortal remains was laid to rest in the presence of health workers.

According to a media reports, the man was buried on March 28.

There is empathy, but it’s very complicated

According to the guidelines for the 21-day nationwide lockdown, not more than 20 persons are allowed to gather at a funeral or congregation.

In the video filming the funeral, one can see the attendees remained away from the burial site where the deceased was finally laid to rest.

The health workers took necessary protective measures before and after the burial so as to reduced the potential transmission of the virus after the patient’s death.

Looking at the current stats, Telangana Health Minister Etela Rajendra said that 53 positive coronavirus cases were reported in the state.

The highly contagious virus has infected more than 1,000 people and killed 29 across the country.

Closed ration shops leave public in utter despair

Nihad Amani and Mohammad Hussain

Hyderabad: It has been eight days since lockdown was imposed.  The hard time began for the public since then, especially the daily wage workers and the homeless.

Their miseries are alarmingly rising since then.

“The white ration card holders would be given 12 kg of rice and Rs.1500,” said chief minister KCR as the lockdown began on March 23.

This announcement sounded to be a relief to all those who could claim it. But it is relief only belief, not reality.

A survey by siasat.com  revealed that none of the ration shops are functioning.

The people in front of the closed doors of the shops are saying, “Sahab, humlog pichle sath din se intezaar karre, humlog roz kam ko jate aur ate ate sauda late aur udhar mangne gae bhi tu koi bhi nahi dere.” Stated women in Kishan Bagh, a locality in the Old City.

This roughly meant that they are waiting for the ration shops to open. Also, they do not have grains and the money to buy them.

Ration shop dealers said that the grains promised by the government have not been delivered yet.  They also said they have no idea when the rice, wheat and other grains would be delivered.

The shops have replaced the biometric system with the tokens.

“I have six children and I am the only income-earning person in the family. I have received no money or help from any quarter for the past seven days moreover. My auto-rickshaw has been seized by the police and I cannot pay the penalty, said an auto driver in Azampura.

“My child is sick and his hospital expenses are very high. Moreover, this lockdown has made it very difficult for me to run the affairs. The house where I was working has removed me from service.  Now I am jobless and in mounting debts,” stated Sri Laxmi.

Aise hi ration ke intezaar mai marjate humlog. Wo virus nahi, bhuk mar deti humlog ko (We would die waiting for ration and hunger, not be the virus),” said a 60-year-old woman, who lived with her 4 little grandchildren. Her son and daughter-in-law have passed away recently in Shaikpet Nala.

Many weddings postponed in Hyderabad; Online Nikah in UP, Bihar

Hyderabad: Almost all Muslim weddings scheduled during the next one month have been postponed, due to the 21-day complete lockdown getting stricter. Thousands of marriages were to be solemnized during the lunar month of Sha’ban and Christian month of April. But almost all have been postponed.

According to Qazi Habeeb Ahmed bin Salam Al’ataas, who solemnizes Nikah in and around Chandrayangutta, people are making him phone calls informing him about the postponement of marriages. Due to uncertainty, new dates are not being fixed right now.

A businessman from Alijah Kotla Shabbir Ahmed told that his brother’s marriage was scheduled in the second week of April. “Luckily we had not distributed invitation cards yet. We will fix a new date.” He said.

Mohammed Irfan who runs catering business revealed that several people have postponed marriages till Ramadan.

Because of the lockdown imposed to fight Coronavirus, traditional wedding ceremonies seem impossible as of now. However, people may opt for online Nikah taking a cue from the Bihar and UP couples who chose to take the tech route for long-distance marriage via video-conferencing.

Online Nikah

Sadiya Nasreen and Danish Raza were scheduled to have their Nikah (Muslim wedding vows) solemnised on March 23.

All arrangements for the wedding were made, including the booking of the community hall where the wedding function was scheduled to take place.

But just before their Big Day, the government announced measures to curb the spread of Covid-19. Travels were restricted, flights and trains suspended- making it difficult for the guests to get together for the wedding.

Invitation cards for the Nikah had already been sent out. Hence, the families decided to go ahead- via video conference on Monday.

They sat in front of computer screens and Qazi solemnised their wedding and their kin congratulated each other.

The bride and groom were seen sitting in their wedding dresses along with their family members, at their homes in Bihar and UP.

As reported by TOI, three such ‘Nikahs’ in the state this week. Besides Sadiya, two sisters Nagma and Rahat Parveen of Begusarai also chose to exchange their wedding vows through an online ceremony in the presence of a small group of family members and relatives.

Taking inspiration from Sadiya’s video-conferencing wedding, Naghma and Rahat had married in a similar online ceremony at their home in Begusarai’s Choti Baliya village on March 25 evening.

3 new cases in Hyderabad; No action against norm-breakers

Mohammed Hussain

Hyderabad: As a result of taking precautions for granted, three residents in a 35 flat, five-story building of Dabeerpura tested positive for COVID-19.

Though the medical team, GHMC officials and police have been visiting the apartment building asking people to maintain social distancing. Yet many residents are taking such important instructions lightly. The lanes of the Dabeerpura bustle with activity with people from 6 am early in the morning till 6 pm.

Moreover, the GHMC officials informed the locals that mobile Rythu Bazars will be visiting their home to provide vegetables and even rations. Despite these conveniences being bought to these people, Dabeerpura residents were out and about on the streets.

When the medical the team came to know that five Coronavirus suspected cases were reported in Sultanpura area of Dabeerpura, those afflicted were immediately moved to the Gandhi Hospital.

The GHMC and medical team alerted the other residents to put themselves under ‘Home Quarantine’.

Later it was learnt that among five suspects from the same family, three were detected positive for COVID-19 and two were reported negative. They too were asked to be ‘Home Quarantined.’

Surprisingly, it has been observed that no health precautions are being followed by any of the apartment’s residents and neighbours. In fact, when a siasat.com reporter visited the area to enquire about the case,  he saw that the residents are roaming on the streets and in the lanes of the area where the first three positive cases were found in the Old City.

Upon receiving this information on Sunday, a medical team and the police reached the same area saw that there is a suspect within 100 meters of the apartment.

Then the nodal officers asked the person about his travel histor. It was revealed that he had come from Rajasthan but didn’t have any of the COVID-19 symptoms. Due to his recent return from another state, he was directed to be ‘Home Quarantined’ for 14 days. The medical team left a stamp on his left hand that read ‘Self-Quarantine.’

When approached, the medical officer of Urban Primary Health Care (UPHC) mentioned that amongst five suspects, two were negative and were directed to not leave their homes. The remaining three were shifted to the Gandhi Hospital. We have been creating public awareness in the area to maintain social distancing and remain at home.

Even on Monday, a large number of footfalls were seen. A 74-year-old Khaja Hameeduddin was the first Telangana resident to succumb to the death via COVID-19. Day by day, the toll is increasing in the state.

“The Muslim community should heed these calls for social distancing, take all the necessary precautions and follow the instructions given by the Telangana Government,” said Hafez Ahsan Bin Mohammed Al-Hamoomi, Khateeb of the Shahi Masjid.

Hyderabad residents complain against cops

Hyderabad: The lockdown and curfew in Hyderabad have resulted in a number of citizens being not allowed to venture outside their homes for the essential services. In some cases, they have been beaten up by the police for simply doing something that the government explicitly granted permission for.

In the video below, Habeeb Nagar police officers are not allowing the citizens to avail the essential services despite the state government announcing that it is permissible for people to commute outside their homes for essential services like purchasing groceries and visiting the hospital from 6 am to 6 pm.

Many have said that police officers stopped them, fined them and towed as well as impounded their vehicles in spite of a legitimate explanation regarding why they were out.

A boy who was out purchasing vegetables was halted by the cops and questioned by them. After questioning him, he was pushed into the police patrolling car and was taken to the Habeeb Nagar Police Station.

This has lead to many complaints as to whether law enforcement officials understand what constitutes essential services. That too, despite the government’s explicit instructions as to which services people can step out of their homes for.
