BJP, Cong attack TRS govt over less number of COVID-19 tests

Hyderabad: The opposition BJP and the Congress in Telangana have slammed the TRS government for allegedly conducting less number of COVID-19 tests, a charge dismissed by the ruling party.

BJP demands Telangana Health Minister’s resignation

BJP chief spokesperson in Telangana K Krishna Saagar Rao, in a statement on Tuesday evening, demanded resignation of Telangana Health Minister Etela Rajender for “endangering the entire population of Telangana by intentionally conducting the lowest number of tests than any other state in India, with proportionate population.”

The health minister has not only underperformed during the massive health crisis but also wilfully misled the people of the state, opposition and media by claiming the state was testing as per ICMR guidelines, he alleged.

His department was also not reporting the test data regularly as mandated by ICMR in the daily bulletins since many weeks, he claimed.

“BJP stands vindicated on the allegations it has been making with substantive data since weeks, that TRS government has been manipulating COVID19 infection rate in the state of Telangana since the beginning and more so after the second week of April,” the BJP leader said.

“One cannot understand the intention of the state government behind this brazen deviation in reference to public health standard protocols,” he said.

Uttam Kumar Reddy slams TS Govt.

State Congress president and MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy hit out at the Telangana government for allegedly not testing enough.

He claimed that the state was testing only 250 samples per day.

“TS (Telangana state) is conducting 652 tests/M while natl. avg is 1600.

Look at total tests done by TS & neighbouring states.

Tests in neighbouring States

TS – 22,842, AP – 2,29,118, Kar- 1,40, 024, MH -2,61,783, TN – 3,26,720. TS is testing only 250 samples per day! Is T Govt policy- less tests mean less COVID cases !!, Uttam Kumar Reddy tweeted.

According to data released by the state government on May 17 as part of its daily bulletin, the cumulative number of samples tested as on May 16 was 23,388.

Out of that, 947 men tested positive, while 566 women were found positive.

It said 14,256 men tested negative, while 7,619 women tested negative.

According to official data (also furnished on May 17), as on May 14, Telangana carried out 22,842 tests, while 1388 positive cases were found.

Tests done to detect a positive case were 16 in Telangana.

However, ruling TRS MLC Palla Rajeshwara Reddy dismissed the criticism, saying the state government is following the guidelines, issued from time to time, by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Centre.

“The government of Telangana, the medical and health department, is following the ICMR guidelines and the Central Government guidelines.

Whenever, they give guidelines, we are following,” he told PTI on Tuesday, when asked about the Congress’ criticism.

The state government has been following the central guidelines vis-a-vis lockdown, testing and others, he said.

The TRS leader said different wings of the Central Government have been visiting continuously and monitoring the situation and expressed full satisfaction with regard to Telangana government’s steps to contain COVID-19 spread.

Dismissing criticism that Telangana was not conducting enough tests compared to its neighbouring state (an apparent reference to Andhra Pradesh), Rajender said on April 28 that ICMR guidelines state that tests should be done on those who are symptomatic and not on those who do not show symptoms.

Risk of “Dengue” could strike earlier than expected in 2020

Less Pollution & Early Monsoon could bring in an unwanted enemy “earlier” into our lives, Ensure “hygienic” surroundings to contain the spread of disease

Hyderabad: The world is rejoicing the dwindling pollution levels, and India is hoping for an early monsoon to suit our conditions! However, there is a plausible “side effect” to these positive implications humankind is celebrating due to a global lockdown. And that is the threat of “dengue” striking in India earlier than anticipated.

It is widely known that dengue fever is caused by a virus which is spread via mosquitoes that thrive in and near unhygienic human habitations. When a mosquito bites a person infected with a dengue virus, the virus enters the mosquito. When the infected mosquito then bites another person, the virus enters the other person’s bloodstream.

Commenting on the ailment, Dr Venkata Ramana Rao Nellutla, Senior Consultant Physician, Continental Hospitals said, “Surprisingly, we are noticing dengue cases in the summertime this year, which is much earlier than usual. Dengue spreading mosquitoes thrive during rainy seasons and this year India is expecting an early monsoon, possibly due to low pollution levels across the world. Hence, it is important our society is aware of the need to ensure clean and hygienic surroundings to stop the spread of dengue fever. Any lapses in ensuring a cleaner and safer environment will lead to another disaster, in the times when humankind is already fighting with one.”

There is a possibility that both dengue and Covid-19 diseases might rise at the same time over the next few weeks. A major challenge before healthcare professionals is that both the diseases share some of the symptoms like fever, fatigue, body pains etc., and if they co-exist, there is an increased risk of organ involvement. Unfortunately, such a situation could also lead to a situation where the availability of hospital beds will emerge as a major challenge.

Dengue warning symptoms & signs

Early days ( day 1 to 5)

  • Persistent high-grade fever
  • Severe body pains, backache & eye pain
  • Persistent vomitings

 Later days:

  • Mucosa bleeding
  • Bloating, fullness in the abdomen with vomitings
  • Non-itchy rashes
  • Breathlessness

 Lab findings:

  • Low platelets & white cells
  • Altered liver function
  • Increasing hematocrit

“Just like we are taking the necessary precautions from Covid-19, we must protect ourselves from mosquitoes too. We should ensure there is no stagnant water in our vicinity. Mosquito nets, repellents should be encouraged all the time to avoid mosquito bites.

As both the illness are caused by viruses, only symptomatic treatment can be offered, and visiting nearby healthcare facility to get an early diagnosis is the solution,” added Dr Venkata Ramana Rao Nellutla, Senior Consultant Physician, Continental Hospitals.

CM KCR’s proposed new agri policy is faulty: Uttam

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President & Nalgonda MP Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao postpone the implementation of the new policy on regulated cropping pattern for next year after holding comprehensive deliberations with all the stakeholders, especially farmers.

  • TPCC chief discusses proposed policy with Kisan Congress
  • TPCC Chief asks CM KCR to postpone implementation on a new policy
  • The state can’t dictate farmers on crop cultivation with just one week left for sowing

He was addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday along with All India Kisan Cell Vice-Chairman M. Kodanda Reddy, Covid-19 Task Force Chairman Marri Shashidhar Reddy, ex-minister G. Chinna Reddy and AICC Secretary Vamshichand Reddy.

Uttam Kumar Reddy informed that the party had a detailed discussion the proposed agricultural policy based on the information available in public domain. He said there were lot of doubts and apprehensions and no clarity on what the policy stands for.

Therefore, he said that the policy was too faulty and could not be introduced and implemented at once. He said that the State Government did not consult anyone before trying to introduce a policy to regulate cropping pattern.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the proposed policy should be implemented from next year as less than a week was left for beginning of sowing for Kharif season. At this stage, he said that the State Government could not force the farmers on cultivating the crops of its choice.

He said that the State Government could draft a comprehensive policy after holding a discussion with farmers, scientists and opposition parties and start implementation from next year onwards. He said that the Congress party was strongly opposed to the proposed policy in its present form.

The TPCC Chief accused CM KCR of threatening the farmers of serious consequences if they refused to grow crops to be decided by State Government. He said it was unethical and illegal on the part of Chief Minister to threaten to stop financial assistance under Rythu Bandhu if farmers refused to follow regulated cropping pattern.

He described CM KCR’s warnings as a direct insult to all the farmers and said that the Congress party would launch an agitation to protect the rights and interests of Telangana farmers.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said that there has been an increase in a number of suicides by farmers ever since TRS came to power. He said Telangana has emerged on the second position in the country in farmers’ suicides.

He also accused KCR of cheating the farmers on crop loan waiver promise. He said even after a one-and-a-half-year of winning elections, KCR did not fulfil the promise of waiving off crop loans up to Rs. 1 lakh. Similarly, he said nearly 40% of farmers were being denied assistance under the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

The TPCC chief said CM KCR should have apologised to farmers for his government’s failure to procure paddy and other agriculture produce from farmers. Instead of taking corrective measures to undo the injustices done with farmers, he said KCR has come up with a fresh proposal of regulating cropping pattern to divert people’s attention.

He said that the factors like the supply of seeds and purchase of cotton were not in the control of the State Government. Therefore, on what grounds, KCR is advising farmers to cultivate cotton? He asked adding that CM KCR should give a guarantee to pay Rs. 7,000 per quintal before asking farmers to grow cotton instead of some other crop.

Similarly, he said that the Congress party would not tolerate if the State Government pressurises maize, paddy and other farmers.
