Hyderabad: The family of a Muslim man from Narsingi, who died of a heart attack, had to face a harrowing ordeal when four graveyards in and around the city denied them a burial space. Miyan, a resident of Gandhamguda in Bairaiguda on the outskirts of Hyderabad, passed away on Monday morning. Mohammed Khaja Miyan, who died at age 55, was ultimately buried in a Hindu cremation ground after the intervention of local leaders.

Mohammed Pasha, his son, said, “We took him to four graveyards but no one helped us. In one of the graveyards, the grave was dug out but again filled up after people objected to it.” Rukman Ahmed Khan, the chief of the Gandhamguda Muslim Welfare Association, who assisted the family in finding a graveyard, said that they had gone to many places to bury the body. These include Langar Houz, their local mosque, another mosque in Peerancheru and others.

It was then that local leaders including a Corporator and a local TRS leader named Sandeep pitched the idea of burying Mohammad Khaja’s body in a Hindu cremation ground. Sandeep said, “Local graveyard committee members objected to Mohammed Khaja being buried over here because the family is originally from Gadwal. They reasoned that the man should be buried in Gadwal.

“We tried to request them on the basis of humanity but they did not relent. Local leaders pitched the idea of burying the man in a cremation ground. We made the family understand and they finally went ahead with it,” he added. Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan requested the Waqf Board chairman Mohammed Saleem and Home Minister Mahmood Ali to take action against the Masjid Committee members for denying burial space to the family.

Covid spread not alarming despite relaxations, says KCR

$

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao on Wednesday said that people should not be scared or feel fearful about coronavirus, as the spread was not on an alarming scale despite relaxations in the lockdown. He, however, said people should be cautious and alert.

He said according to some estimates, positive cases may increase in the country in the next two to three months. “But people should not entertain any fear or anxiety. The government is ready to provide treatment to any number of cases in the state. The required PPE kits, test kits, masks, beds, ventilators, hospitals are all ready,” a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office quoted him as saying at a high-level meeting called by him to review Covid-19 situation.

Medical Officers, experts and state level committees examining the developments that are taking place on Covid-19 all over the world explained the present situation to the Chief Minister and Ministers.

“The developments world over point out that one should not be scared about the corona issue. According to the studies conducted all over the world and estimates by the World Health Organisation (WHO) despite spread of the virus, the symptoms are not appearing in a majority of people. About 80 per cent of those having the virus have no symptoms and they need no treatment.”

They pointed out that only 15 per cent of them have Influenza-like symptoms, cold, cough, and difficulty in breathing. People with this Influenza Like Symptoms (ILI) will recover fast. Only 5 per cent of them have the Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). More care should be taken about these patients. A majority of deaths happened in this category. The death rate in the country is 2.86 per cent and in Telangana state, it is 2.82 per cent. These patients had the history of other ailments.

It was also observed that though there was movement among the people after the relaxations, the virus did not spread rapidly. “This is a good development. In all, it is proved that nobody should entertain fear about Corona. Since there is no medicine and vaccine for Corona, people should be on alert. They should take personal precautions,” the medical officers and experts said.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, urged people to take precautions though there was relaxation in the lockdown guidelines. He also asked the medical and health department to be alert. “People who got the virus were asymptomatic. Hence there is no room for any anxiety. But some are having symptoms. We have to provide good medical treatment to them. There is a need to take extra care about patients in serious health condition,” he said.

“Although, the business has gotten better with the rise in temperature for the past few days. I hope the sales to continue this way but the lockdown has put a dent in the initial months of our regular business,” he added.

Sharada, a buyer said, “It is not good for health to drink refrigerated water. So, we drink water stored in earthen pots throughout the year.”

Non-teaching staff at schools find it difficult to sustain

$
0
0

Hyderabad: These days every nook and corner in the city has a school that is working to render decent education to children. Not only teachers but there are other non-teaching staff like aayas and watchmen who work there to earn a living. Most often in primary schools, students glorify the aayas for their motherly care and affection towards them. While the teachers nourish the students in academics, aayas play a vital role in the moral upbringing of children.

When an aaya is kind and loving towards her group of children, they acquire the same ethics too. Coming to the watchmen, they serve the premises in a way no one else does. From keeping a record of the visitors to guarding on and off the coast of the establishment. These people share equal responsibilities as the teaching staff does.

The imposed lockdown has hit hard on the non-teaching staff, especially the aayas most of which are either single mothers or wives of unemployed husbands.

“Majboori rahi toh hi aisa kaam karte na humlog”, says almost every lady who works as an aaya in schools. The reason these ladies opt for this job is the wages they need for their survival and as they are uneducated and filled with motherly feelings, most often they tend to become aayas in schools and colleges.

These employees get a salary between 4000 and 6000 rupees. In a survey conducted by Siasat.com, it was concluded that most non-teaching staff are either given half of their payments or no salary at all amid lockdown.
When spoken to, these ladies wail about how bad the conditions of society agonize them. Laxmi said, “I am working in a school for almost seven years now and earn 5000 rupees and then I also worked in a bungalow in the evenings where I get paid some 3000 rupees. Amid lockdown, I neither have any work at school nor does the family at the bungalow want me to work.”

“Meri salary 3500 hai aur ab ye lockdown mei 1750 hi mil Rahi hai socho madam mai kaisa mere do bacchon aur mera guzara kar rahi hoon mere miya bhi kamaate nahi hain,” told Yasmeen Banu.
Many other workers like these aayas and watchmen are being laid off by their employers when it comes to paying them for their part during the lockdown.

The government’s schemes for such people amid lockdown need to reach all levels of society so that all needy people reap benefits from them.

Other organizations apart from the government that works for social service must also reach out to as many such people as they can.

Eid Mubarak. A Whole Month of Devotion and Dedication of One’s Wealth towards Social Justice!”
