Hyderabad: BJP leader flays iPhone proposal to Standing Committee

BJP booth vice president died in police custody: West Bengal

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader G Vivek Venkataswamy on Saturday termed iPhone proposal to Standing Committee members as ‘loot of state exchequer’.

The BJP leader told ANI, “I strongly condemn this action. K Chandrashekar Rao has been looting the state exchequer. The most corrupt state government in the country is the KCR-led state government.”

He added that the Standing Committee’s term is getting over next month. “When the term was there, the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao preponed the elections with a view of trying to see that opposition parties do not get enough time to campaign and set right the candidates and wanted to stump them by preponing the elections,” he said.

Cost of iPhones

The BJP leader further said Rs 27 lakh is being spent to purchase iPhones. Today the Standing Committee has approved iPhones to the corporators who are going to demit office.

It is to be noted that the decision came at a time when all the 17 members of the Standing Committee, which is the final authority to approve the development projects of the corporation, will demit office in the first week of February 2021. The proposal to buy the new iPhone 12 Pro Max (512GB) was among the 14 proposals that were listed on the agenda on Thursday. According to the proposal, each phone would cost Rs 1.6 lakh and approval for a total sum of Rs 27.23 lakh has been requested.

Venkataswamy further said losing so badly in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election is a failure of KCR and his son KTR. “The leadership failures and governance failures, people have given an appropriate reply to their misgovernance. This misgovernance continues even today despite losing the corporation,” he added.

BJP’s performance in GHMC polls

In the recently concluded elections for 149 seats, the BJP won 48 seats, TRS 55, AIMIM 44 and Congress won two seats.

Later, the TRS also won the Neredmet Division of the GHMC after the counting of votes was taken up on December 9, following the Telangana High Court orders. With the victory in Neredmet, TRS’s tally in the GHMC has gone up to 56.

TRS in a quandary on bagging GHMC mayor post

$

Hyderabad: The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has found itself in a tight spot, as it is just a few steps short in claiming the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) mayor post. TRS leaders from the city said that the party will not seek help from the All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), to avoid giving more ammunition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the GHMC elections, out of the total 150 wards, the TRS won 56, the BJP 48, AIMIM 44 and the Congress two. However, there are also 49 ex-officio members (MLAs, MPs and MLCs in the GHMC area), who also participate in the mayoral election. Within that, the TRS is reported to have 31 votes, the AIMIM 10, BJP 3 and the Congress 1. The mayoral election will be held in February.

“We will not ask the MIM for any support for sure. To win the mayoral position, we need less than a dozen votes. Both the BJP and the AIMIM have got votes based on religion, but the allegation of us being a ‘Muslim party’ is thrown at us.

Even then we are five short. The BJP at the Centre did not do anything for flood relief as well, and still questioned us,” said a TRS leader from Hyderabad, who did not want to be quoted.

In the run up to the GHMC polls, the BJP ran an aggressive Hindutva campaign, bringing in leaders like union home minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, whose campaigns drew flak from various corners. Adityanath, in his speeches, also gave a call asking why Hyderabad cannot be renamed to “Bhagyanagar”.

In the previous GHMC elections, the TRS won 99 seats and the AIMIM 44, leaving the Congress and BJP with scraps. It essentially allowed the TRS to have its own mayor and deputy mayor without any hiccups. In the run up to the 2020 polls, TRS working president and state IT minister even said that his party and the AIMIM are not “friendly” parties, and ruled out any alliance.

“The TRS is in a very tricky situation, but they will eventually figure out a way. The only option left for them would be to take indirect support from the AIMIM. Even then the BJP will say that there is an indirect understanding between AIMIM and the TRS. KCR is a smart politician,” said political analyst Palwai Raghavendra Reddy.

Azaan

Hyderabad: Members of the Muslim community from Chaderghat locality of the city have alleged that some “anti-social” elements are threatening them to stop recital of Azaan on loudspeaker.

The committee members of Masjid-e-Nizami located at Victoria playground in Chaderghat said that an unidentified group started objecting to the recitation of Azaan in Public Address Systems (PAS) of the mosque from the past four months.

The Imam (a person who leads Muslim prayers) of the mosque said the police officials from Sultan Bazar police station intervened and asked to reduce the volume of the loudspeaker.

“In spite of keeping the volume low, those anti-social elements have again threatened us,” the Imam claimed.

Social activist Amjed Ullah Khan has now brought the issue to the notice of Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar and requested him to look into the matter and settle it amicably.

Besides, reciting Azaan (call for prayers) five times a day, the PAS is also used to make a few very highly localized announcements such as the death of someone in the concerned locality or information regarding missing children, and alerting for Sehri and Iftaar during Ramzan.

Earlier this month, The Shiv Sena had asked the Centre to take steps to stop the use of loudspeakers in mosques “to curb noise pollution”.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece “Saamana” wrote that the issue is of noise pollution and environment protection.

“The Centre should promulgate an ordinance to stop loudspeakers on mosques to prevent noise pollution,” it said.

In-form Hyderabad take on leaders Mumbai (Preview Match 34)

Vasco (Goa), Dec 19 : Unbeaten Hyderabad FC have got off to a good start to the season and they would be looking to keep it going when they face league leaders Mumbai City at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Sunday.

Manolo Marquez’s men bounced back from a run of three straight draws when they downed SC East Bengal in their previous game. But they will have their task cut out against a Mumbai side that will be looking to put a disappointing 1-1 draw against Jamshedpur FC behind them.

“Mumbai City, in my opinion, are the favourites to win the regular season. They’ve got a very good team with a lot of quality and a top coach. They play good football, are good in the high press, good in set-pieces. For me, they are one of the more difficult games that we will play,” Marquez said.

Hyderabad have enough firepower to take all three points in the game. Striker Aridane Santana has scored four times in the league, already.

“Of course, we will have possibilities to win the game. We can win or lose with all the teams and it depends on our performance. We’ve prepared for the game in the same way we’ve prepared for other games. Of course, we have looked at videos of the opponent. They are a team that wants to keep the ball, the same as our team. We have to be prepared to defend very well,” Marquez added.

Sergio Lobera’s team will be aiming to restore their points advantage at the top of the table, with Mumbai currently level on points with ATK Mohun Bagan. They dominated possession in their previous game against Jamshedpur but managed to get just four shots on target.

Mumbai will be hoping that Hugo Boumous, who has created more chances and registered more assists than anyone in the league so far, is fit enough to return.

“The most important thing in the last game was the finish, because we created a lot of chances and when you create a lot of chances, you need to score,” Lobera said.

Like his opponents, Lobera too knows that he is in for a tough game against a tough team.

“I knew the coach and the profile of the players. He (Marquez) was working in Las Palmas, the same club I was with in the past. I know his style of play,” Lobera said.

Double-decker buses likely to make a comeback in Hyderabad; Five routes identified

Can double-decker buses make a comeback in Hyderabad?

Hyderabad: Hyderabad might soon see double-decker buses plying on the roads of the city. The committee that was appointed to review the feasibility of operating these buses on the city roads has submitted the report.

The committee has suggested five routes for plying the double-decker buses. It identified the area which does not have flyovers and metro rails.

These routes are as follows

  1. 229 Secunderabad to Medchal
  2. 219 Secunderabad to Patencheru
  3. 218 Kothi to Patencheru
  4. 9X CBS to Jedimetla
  5. 118 Afzalgunj to Mehdipatnam

KTR recalled double-decker buses in Hyderabad

It may be mentioned that on the request of K. T. Rama Rao, the Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development of Telangana, Ajay Kumar, Transport Minister of Telangana instructed the TSRTC officials to review double-decker bus operations.

Last month, KTR had recalled the days when he used to take the double-decker bus to school.

He tweeted, “I have many fond memories of riding the double decker bus on my way to St. George’s Grammar School at Abids.

Not sure why they were taken off the roads. Any chance we can bring them back Transport Minister @puvvada_ajay Garu?”.

Why double-decker buses were removed from Hyderabad roads?

Till the year 2002, double-decker buses with one driver and two conductors used to operate from Secunderabad to Jawaharlal Nehru Zoo Park and from Afzalgunj to Mehdipatnam. These buses used to ply on the route from Secunderabad to Mehdipatnam till 2004.

Due to the construction of flyovers in large numbers and to the poor condition of double-decker buses, they have been removed from the roads.

Hyderabad: Vaccine capital of the world

Hyderabad: Vaccine capital of the world

By Mohammed Shafeeq
Hyderabad, Dec 20 : Amid the gloom caused by COVID-19, one sector which provided a ray of hope was life sciences and turning the challenge into an opportunity, Hyderabad fortified its position as a global force in the world of pharmaceuticals.

This southern city, already recognised as a global information technology destination, proved its prowess in the field of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology and emerged as the vaccine capital of the world.

Already known as the bulk drug capital of India, Hyderabad witnessed manufacturing of lifesaving COVID-19 drugs like Remdesivir, Hydroxychloroquine and Favipiravir by some of the top pharma companies based here.

This was followed by hectic efforts in the city to develop COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, Hyderabad has emerged as the nerve centre of all research and development activities in the country for COVID-19 vaccines and has even attracted international attention.

Today, almost all the vaccines being developed in the country for the pandemic have a Hyderabad connect.

Four of the six companies developing COVID vaccines in India are based in Hyderabad. Bharat Biotech is currently conducting Phase III clinical trials of India’s first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin.

Covaxin is being developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Virology (NIV). This indigenous, inactivated vaccine is being developed and manufactured in Bharat Biotech’s BSL-3 (Bio-Safety Level 3) bio-containment facility at Genome Valley here.

According to Bharat Biotech, Covaxin has been evaluated in approximately 1,000 subjects in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, with promising safety and immunogenicity results.

The Phase III human clinical trials of the vaccine began in November, involving 26,000 volunteers across India. This is India’s first and only Phase III efficacy study for a COVID-19 vaccine, and the largest phase III efficacy trial ever conducted for any vaccine in India.

“Covaxin has garnered interest from several countries worldwide for supplies and introduction,” said Suchitra Ella, Joint Managing Director of Bharat Biotech.

In April, Bharat Biotech announced development of CoroFlu, an intranasal vaccine for Coronavirus. University of Wisconsin–Madison and vaccine company FluGen along with Bharat Biotech began the development and testing of CoroFlu. The Hyderabad based company will produce almost 300 million doses of vaccine for global distribution.

In May, Bharat Biotech and Thomas Jefferson University of Philadelphia signed an exclusive deal to develop a new vaccine candidate for COVID-19 invented at Jefferson. The novel vaccine was developed using an existing deactivated rabies vaccine as a vehicle for coronavirus proteins.

Bharat Biotech claimed to have excellent track record of innovation with more than 140 global patents, a wide product portfolio of more than 16 vaccines, 4 bio-therapeutics, registrations in more than 116 countries and WHO Pre-qualifications.

The company has so far developed vaccines for H1N1, Rotavirus, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Chikungunya, Zika and the world’s first conjugated vaccine for Typhoid. It has delivered more than four billion doses of vaccines worldwide. It is also the largest Rabies vaccine manufacturer in the world.

Another city-based firm Biological E last month initiated clinical trial of its COVID-19 subunit vaccine candidate in India following approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

BE is making the vaccine in collaboration with Dynavax Technologies Corporation (Dynavax), a US-based vaccine focused biopharmaceutical company, and Baylor College of Medicine, a health sciences university in Houston.

Biological E has also signed an agreement with Johnson & Johnson to produce the latter’s vaccine at its vaccine production facilities and sell them both in India and export across various global markets.

Indian Immunologicals, a human and animal vaccines maker, too is developing a vaccine for COVID.

Hyderabad-based pahrma major Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is conducting clinical trials of Russian COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V. Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, has collaborated with Dr Reddy’s to conduct clinical trials and distribute the vaccine in India.

Hyderabad was under spotlight with the recent visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ambassadors of more than 60 countries to the facilities of Bharat Biotech and Biological E in Genome Valley

Telangana’s industry minister K. T. Rama Rao believes that Hyderabad has cemented its position as the vaccine capital of the world.

He pointed out that Hyderabad is already manufacturing more than two billion doses of vaccines every year, which is one-third of the global vaccine output.

The city, with its strong ecosystem, has played a critical role in making India not only self-sufficient in the medicine manufacture but also turned it into the pharmacy capital of the world. It accounts for 40 per cent of the total Indian bulk drugs and 50 per cent of the bulk drug exports.

Industry leaders believe that Hyderabad will be an integral part of the global efforts to vaccinate the world against COVID.

Even if no vaccine is developed in the city, the city will still have a big role to play in global vaccination efforts with the sheer vaccine manufacturing capacity it houses.

Hyderabad has the largest US FDA approved vaccine facilities. They have the capacity to manufacture millions of doses with world-class standards.

“India’s vaccine sector will play a critical role in developing and producing vaccine at scale for distribution across the world. Hyderabad’s importance in the global vaccine landscape is only growing,” K.T. Rama Rao said.

Telangana government has assured the companies that it will play the enabling role in global vaccination efforts against COVID-19.

The Hyderabad airport announced few days ago that has developed necessary infrastructure to handle the exports.

As per the industry insights, most of India’s vaccine export will be to Africa, Latin America and Asian destinations.

Hyderabad is already home to more than 800 life sciences companies and the sector employs over 1,20,000 pharmaceutical professionals.

It is said to be the only city in the country to house more than 20 incubation centres focused only on life sciences and health-tech. More than 200 start-ups are also working on innovative solutions in healthcare.

Genome Valley is India’s first organised cluster for life sciences R&D activities spread across 600 square kilometers. Set up in 1999, it has world-class infrastructure facilities in the form of Industrial / Knowledge parks, Special Economic Zones (SEZs), Multi-tenanted dry and wet laboratories and incubation facilities.

It is home to more than 200 companies including presence of the marquee global names like Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Ferring Pharma, Chemo, DuPont, Ashland, United States Pharmacopeia and Lonza.

With Hyderabad Pharma City also likely to be operational soon, the city is looking to ramp-up production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and thus develop a cluster to help the country compete with China.

The new project is expected to create 1,70,000 direct jobs and 5,60,000 indirect jobs.

Take a closer look and one will find young students, in the nets, wearing leg pads, helmets and gloves, cracking the seamed, red cricket ball for a straight drive even as the young bowlers follow through on their action.

This is the ACE – Academy of Cricket Excellence, where young boys enter to emerge as talented batsmen, bowlers or all-rounders.

ACE has three state-of-the-art, well laid astro turf pitches, all of which are enmeshed in sturdy nets. After all, safety is paramount. It is here, within these nets, that players are groomed under the watchful eye of coaches, and futures are made.

ACE coaches are Syed Meraj, who has had a few solid knocks under his belt as a seasoned Ranji Trophy player, Urooj Ahmed, who played State-level cricket for several seasons, and continues to play County Cricket in the United Kingdom, Shaik Nayeem, also a former State-level cricketer with a solid near-decade experience in coaching young players.

The best part about ACE is that it is open for all players irrespective of age. From as little as six-years-of-age to those the IT professional working in an international tech conglomerate. ACE grounds are open to all.

Specialized coaching is imparted twice a day – from 4 pm to 6 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm. Extra care and focused attention is given to six-year-olds, seven-year-olds and eight-year-olds. This is because their age is impressionable and is right for beginning to learn to play the Gentleman’s Game.

We live in a post-COVID age. And this brings with it special challenges, especially in terms of safety. ACE is committed to the safety of its students and players. All precautionary measures are being taken. These include sanitiser dispensers placed the gate. Players will have to sanitise themselves before beginning practice. Wearing masks is mandatory. We are also enforcing social distancing.
