Vignesh wonder goal helps Mumbai end Hyderabad's unbeaten run

Vasco (Goa), Dec 20 : A wonder-goal from Vignesh Dakshinamurthy was the highlight of the evening as Mumbai City FC beat Hyderabad FC 2-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Tilak Maidan on Sunday.

In a match that saw both sides struggle to create clear-cut chances, Vignesh’s acrobatic 38th-minute strike stood out as a genuine moment of quality. Adam Le Fondre put Sergio Lobera’s men further ahead in the 59th minute as Hyderabad tasted their first defeat of the season.

The caginess that marked much of the game was evident from the fact that Vignesh’s goal was the only shot on target in the first half. With Hugo Boumous missing yet again, Mumbai’s creative struggles that plagued them in their last match against Jamshedpur, continued here as well. They had the better of Hyderabad in every parameter in the first half – they dominated possession, peppered the opposition box with crosses and completed a many more passes. But for the longest time, it looked like a goal would not come.

Whatever questions Mumbai posed, the Hyderabad defence had the answer. Vignesh’s cross in the very first minute of the game was duly dealt with. At the other end of the pitch, Aridane Santana created an opening for Mohammed Yasir, but his cut-back was intercepted by the Mumbai defence.

For Mumbai, Bipin Singh was a lively figure in attack. The winger, in the 15th minute, whipped in a cross that was headed back into danger by Rowllin Borges at the far post, only for the Goan to be flagged offside. Bipin was again in the thick of things in the 26th minute, when he unleashed an attempt from down the right, after being fed by Ahmed Jahouh, only to find the side netting.

But just when it looked like a goal was unlikely, it came in the most spectacular of fashions. A freekick from Jahouh was met with the deftest of touches by Bipin, that diverted it into the path of the onrushing Vignesh. The youngster did not wait for the ball to hit the ground and volleyed it into the net for what is surely one of the best goals of the season so far.

Immediately after the goal, Hyderabad had a chance to equalise when Akash Mishra’s cross found Yasir in the box. He had a free sight on goal, but somehow managed to divert his header side.

Mumbai did not wait long after the second half started to increase their lead. Le Fondre took a touch after receiving a pass from Borges and slotted it past Subrata Paul.

Hyderabad looked livelier than they did in the first half, especially with the introduction of Liston Colaco, but their inability to create clear-cut chances meant that they failed to trouble the Mumbai defence.

The party leaders were of the opinion that Rahul’s leadership is necessary for Congress to move forward and a ‘Chintan Shivir’ will soon be organised to discuss the challenges.

Speaking to the media after a five-hour-long meeting, former union minister Pawan Bansal had said the leaders said the party needs the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

“Everyone said that the party needs Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and we should not care for those who want to divert attention from the agenda. He had also said leaders present at the meeting openly stated their point of view and the party has initiated the process for the election of the party president.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad saw a 10 per cent reduction in the overall crime rate but cybercrime saw an increase of 75 per cent during 2020, police said on Monday.

While there was a dip in most of the crime categories, cybercrime saw an increase compared to last year.

The city recorded 2,456 cases of cybercrime against 1,400-odd last year.

Police attributed this to more people using internet during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many people are working from home or staying indoors because of the pandemic situation,” said Shikha Goel, Additional Commissioner (Crimes and SIT).

Another reason is criminals switching over to cybercrime instead of conventional crime, said Goel, who was talking to reporters, along with Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar and other officials.

Overall crime figures show that 22,641 cases were registered in 2020 as against 25,187 cases registered in 2019.

The police commissioner said crimes against children dropped by 35 per cent. A total of 221 cases were registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act this year against 339 cases last year.

Crimes against women also decreased by 19 per cent. A total of 1,908 crimes against women were registered during 2020 against 2,354 last year.

There was 27 per cent reduction in property crimes, 26 per cent in bodily offences and 19 per cent in crime against women.

Categories of offences like murders, rape, dacoity, culpable homicide, chain-snatching, house break, robbery and theft also saw a reduction.

The police attributed the decrease in crime rate to continuous criminal tracking, dynamic police patrolling and installation of closed-circuit television cameras.

The number of deaths in road accidents also came down this year. Officials said 237 motorists killed as against 271 killed in 2019. They said 68 pedestrians were killed. The number for the last year was 108.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected over 3,000 policemen performing duties. As many as 39 of them succumbed to the virus and related complications.

Spotted deer found dead on University of Hyderabad campus

Hyderabad: A male spotted deer was on Tuesday found dead on the University of Hyderabad campus.

The animal was found dead near under construction site of SN School on the campus. It was attacked by feral dogs.

PhD scholar and wildlife activist Rohit Bondugula said that the excessive deforestation in campus leading to loss of habitat for wildlife. Loss of green cover is forcing animals to come on to open areas. As a result they are falling prey to feral dog attacks and poaching, he said.

Rohit alleged that the forest department and university authorities have failed in protecting these innocent animals.

“We have witnessed several deaths of spotted deer, peafowl, wild boars, wild hares, monitor lizards, mongoose etc,” he said.

The activist demanded measures to control the growing population of dogs. He said there was need to sterilise the stray dogs and raise the height of the boundary walls to prevent feral dogs from entering the campus.

“For the past few years, the university is witnessing huge amount of deforestation activities frequently at some corner of the campus everyday. We lost majority of the green cover and whatever the little bit remaining, we need to save it. The nature doesn’t require us, we require nature,” he said.

He called for constituting a Biodiversity Committee, comprising faculty, students and non-teaching staff to safeguard the campus. Construction/expansion activities in the campus should be taken up only after approval by this committee.

Rohit had earlier voiced concern over the threat to the biodiversity on the campus due to a series of fire accidents

Many wild animals are believed to have perished in two fires in May. The campus witnesses 6-7 fires every year.

The university campus spread over 2500-3000 acres is home to several rare species of bird and wild animals like spotted deer, wild board, monitor lizard and Asian palm civet.

Hyderabad: The state government on Tuesday announced that the rates for RT-PCR tests to diagnose Covid-19 will now be available at an affordable price.

Secretary to the government S. A.M Rizvi said the rates have been drastically slashed from Rs. 850 to Rs. 500.

He also informed that the charges for a sample collected at home have also been slashed from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 750.

This is for the second time that the state government has revised the cots for RT-PCR tests. Earlier in November, the cost of RT-PCR tests was slashed from Rs. 2,200 to Rs.850 and that of tests through home visits was reduced from Rs. 2,600 to Rs.1,200.

Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Dr G Srinivasa Rao had written a letter to the government to cut the cost of RT-PCR tests due to increased availability of test kits and reduction in the cost of both RNA extraction kits and RT-PCR kits. Acting on the recommendations, the government decided to slash the rates.

All National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved private Covid-19 testing laboratories were instructed to strictly adhere to the guidelines of ICMR.

Hospitals, institutes and labs have to display the revised tariffs prominently and strictly comply with the recommendations. District Health and Medical Officers were asked to monitor closely and enforce the prices strictly and give wide publicity.
