400-yr-old Hathyan tree closed to public; activists demand free access

Hyderabad: Free access has been denied to visit 400-year-old Baobab tree, popularly called ‘Hathyan ka Darakht’, within the precinct of Naya Qila in Golconda. The tree falls under the Hyderabad Golf Club and the authorities have deployed security to deny visitors at the historic tree.

Heritage activists, for long, have demanded free access to the precinct which has been occupied by the Golf club management.

It is known that the African merchants who visited Golconda gifted a tree to the then Golconda ruler Quli Qutub Shah was brought from Madagascar in Africa. A few Arabian merchants planted the Baobab tree on the premises of Golconda now popularly known as ‘Hathyan ka Darakht’ or literally elephant tree —whose flowers bloom only at night. These centuries-old Baobab trees witnessed the great reigns of Qutub Shahis to Nizams.

Baobabs trees have been around for millennia—longer than humans have—and even longer then the continents split hundreds of millions of years ago.

Baobab is a succulent, not unlike the little mini-bushes kept in your balconies of office desks. These giant trees can live for up to 5,000 years; can grow to massive size up to 30 meters high and 50 an enormous 50 meters in circumference. These trees are endemic to the African island and can be found in over 30 countries on the continent.

Their bark can be used to make clothes and ropes, and seeds are used to make cosmetics and medicinal supplements.

Native to Madagascar, some parts of the mainland, sub-Saharan Africa and Australia, the baobab is known for not just its towering height (up to 98 ft), but also girth (up to 36 ft) and life span (3,000 years). The rather succulent trunk is said to hold as much as 100,000 liters of water. These trees are also present in Bombay, Gujarat and also in Mandu of Madhya Pradesh.

Lesser-known Baobabs in the city

Hyderabadis are familiar with ‘Hathyan ka Darakht’. There are, however, two lesser-known ones within Hyderabad located in Secunderabad and Rangbaang temple in Nanakramguda.

Anuradha Reddy heritage enthusiast and convenor of INTACH, Hyderabad Chapter. Photo: Mohammed Hussain.

Anuradha Reddy, convener of Hyderabad chapter of INTACH, said: “The other two have been brought from Bombay presidency. It has been mentioned that this tree provides shelter, food and water in the testing climates, which explains its nickname—Tree of Life and Hatiyan Ka Jhad also got heritage awards from INTACH.”

The trunks that are almost 50 meters in circumference, it has a hollow inside, can be used as shelter and 40 people can fit inside the Baobab tree at Golconda, she added.

“But not all is well for this giving tree and there are very few in India,” says Mrs. Anuradha. The oldest trees in the world are slowly dying, and have scientists alarmed.

“Luckily we have historic three Baobab trees in the city and it is our responsibility to protect trees so that our children and their children can also witness these historic trees.” Anuradha added.

Chinese national among 4 held in Hyderabad in loan apps scam

Hyderabad, Dec 25 : A Chinese national was among four people arrested by Cyberabad police on Friday during a raid on a call centre in Hyderabad in the continuing crackdown on illegal loan apps.

Cyber crime police of Cyberabad raided Cubevo Technology Private Ltd’s (Skyline) call centre and arrested four employees — Chinese national Yi Bai alias Dennis, Satya Pal Khyalia, Aniriddh Malhotra (both natives of Rajasthan) and Murathoti Richie Hemanth Seth of Andhra Pradesh.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said another Chinese national Zixia Zhang is the main accused in the case and he is absconding along with another key accused Umapati alias Ajay.

Zixia, along with Umapati, started Digipeergo Tech Pvt Ltd last year. They incorporated another company Skyline Innovation Technology India Pvt Ltd with the help of Singapore-based sister concern Xikai Holding Pte Ltd. He developed instant loan applications and hosted them in Google Play Store. He established few more companies as call centres in various places in India and hired tele callers to collect the repayments from the customers.

According to the Commissioner, the accused developed 11 instant loan applications which offer loans to individuals and collect huge repayments including interest, processing charges, GST, default charges, and one per cent penalty after the expiry of loan period. They were resorting to systematic abuse, harassment of and threats to the defaulters through call centres run by them. They even blackmailed the borrowers by sending fake legal notices to their relatives and family members.

The loan apps are Loan Gram, Cash Train, Cash Bus, AAA Cash, Super Cash, Mint Cash, Happy Cash, Loan Card, Repay One, Money Box, Monkey Box etc.

The Cyber Crime Police Station had recently registered eight cases against loan applications after a complaint from a citizen. The complainant said he obtained Rs 1.20 lakh loan from 28 instant loan apps and though he paid the loan amount of Rs 2 lakh, he received abusive and threatening calls.

The applications developed by these companies were involved in 11 different cases registered in Cyberabad, Hyderabad and Rachakonda police commissionerates.

The police seized Rs 2 crore in bank accounts, two laptops and four mobile phones.

Sajjanar said the applications were developed in such a way that on installing these apps, they get the access to the contacts, mobile information and other data in the device. These applications collect the id proofs, PAN card, KYC documents, and bank account details of the customers. They check the genuineness of the documents and disburse small amounts in the form of loans into the customers’ bank accounts after debiting the processing charges and GST i.e., 25-30 per cent in advance.

This was the latest in a series of crackdown by police. Earlier on December 22, Hyderabad and Cyberabad police had announced arrest of 17 people in raids conducted in Hyderabad and Gurugram.

The police swung into action after three persons committed suicide due to harassment by the employees of online loan apps last week. A techie and a woman government employee were among those who ended their lives.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said four companies had hired around 1,100 executives to run the multi-crore illegal businesses through which thousands of people were victimised across the country.

The companies were identified as Liufang Technologies Private Ltd, Hotful Technologies Private Ltd, Pinpoint Technologies, and Nabloom Technologies Private Ltd and were registered in Bengaluru.

The police chief said that Cyber Crime Police Station had recently registered 16 FIRs pertaining to issue of loans by alleged unauthorised loan apps and harassment of the victims by the companies running the apps through their call centres.

Police raided two locations in Gurugram and three locations in Hyderabad which were running organised tele caller centres, which were being used to persuade, harass and intimidate the loan defaulters.

Eleven heads and important members of the call centres were arrested.

Cyberabad police had also arrested six people connected with loan apps Cash Mama, Loan Zone and Dhana Dhan. Police said Onion Credit Private Ltd and Cred Fox Technologies Pvt Ltd were connected with these apps.

Icebergs, Vicebergs and the Dream—Any doubt?

By Mohammed Hussain Ahmed

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court had instructed Shamshabad Municipal Commissioner yesterday to conduct an inquiry in Survey No.208 to find out whether or not any illegal building construction is going on there.

The HC Bench of Chief Justice Raghvendra Singhhauhan and Justice B Jason Reddy instructed the Commissioner to submit a report in this matter till January 4, 2021.

Instruction issued in connection with PIL

This instruction was issued in connection with Public Interest Litigation filed by G J Pal of India Fellowship Society.  The Petitioner had alleged in his petition that the Municipal officials were aware of the ongoing illegal building construction activity in the area but still they did not take any action.

“Two people are carrying out building construction work in Shamshabad Town on 5.12 acres of Public land.  The Municipal officials know whether any construction is legal or illegal when someone seeks permission for the same”, the petitioner said.

“If any  building is being constructed without seeking permission, it is outright illegal and the municipal officials must be aware about such illegal construction work”, Pal said.

Allegation

“We have met the Municipal officials on November 6 and informed them about the illegal construction activity but they have not yet taken any action in this regard.  This is in violation of the Telangana Municipal Act 2019 and sought action against both the person involved in this illegal construction”, the Petitioner said.

The HC had also issued notices to the Principal Secretary of Municipal Department and Shamshabad Municipal Commissioner along with both the persons named in the petition.

KCR conducting consultations to revamp ministries, TRS party

KCR

By Mohammed Hussain Ahmed

Hyderabad: In the wake of Telangana Rashtriya Samithi’s poor performance and his return from a tour of New Delhi, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is focusing his attention to revamp the party.

According to a report, “the CM is conducting meetings with the party’s senior leaders and the Ministers to find out ways to bring buoyancy in the party.  According to the reports KCR is considering to make big organizational changes to strengthen the party.  He is also trying to make changes in his current government.”

Preparation for Assembly elections

After his return from Delhi, the impression is gaining ground that the BJP could pose a serious challenge to the TRS in future.  BJP’s national leadership had already started preparing for the Assembly election to be held in 2023.  TRS shall do everything possible to check the footprint of BJP in Telangana State.

“After success in 2014 and 2018 elections, KCR has given very less time to meet his ministers and the senior party leaders.  It was said that KCR has not given an audience to his ministers even once during 2 to 3 months.  This is the same situation for the members of Parliament and the MLAs.  However, after the party’s poor show in Dabbak and the recently concluded GHMC elections, KCR started meeting the ministers and the senior party leaders”, the report says.

Party leaders invited for one to one meeting

“KCR had invited many party leaders for a one to one meeting to get feedback about the party in the state.  He is also seeking a report about the performance of people’s representatives and the ministers.  Many development projects were affected due to lack of coordination between the party and the government which lead to public anger.  Along with the changes in his government, KCR is also considering to appoint Harish Rao and A Rajendra as working president of the party.  The non-performing ministers would be replaced with the young ones”, informs the report.

There is a news doing the rounds in the party circles that KT Rama Rao would be appointed as CM.  Like KCR, KTR too is focusing his attention to the municipal corporation elections in Khammam and Warangal along with the MLC graduate seats.

Delhi HC adjourns to Nov 20 hearing on Mehul Choksi's plea against Netflix documentary

By Mohammed Hussain Ahmed

Hyderabad:  A PhD research scholar from Karimnagar filed a petition in Telangana High Court alleging irregularities in the approval of fellowship in Osmania and Kakatiya Universities in violation of the rules stipulated in this regard. He appealed to the HC to order for a CBI inquiry in this matter alleging that no action was taken in response to his earlier complaints.

Notice issued to Govt, UGC, others

Admitting the petition of Srinivas, the High Court had issued notices to the Central Government, University Grant Commission, CBI, Osmania University and Kakatiya University seeking their reply.

Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice V Vijaysen Reddy had given the respondent 4 weeks time to submit their affidavits.

Allegations

“There are irregularities going on against SC/ST and OBC scholars with regard to research programs.  I had lodged a complaint to CBI some months ago”, Srinivas said.

“The students taking admission in PhD and M.Phil should be given fellowship.  The University Grant Commission had issued guidelines for granting national fellowship to the OBC students. Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students and Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC/ST are given to those students who have done their post-graduation and intending to take admission in M.Phil and PhD Courses”, Srinivas said.

Syed Zameer (55), a former councilor of Adilabad municipality, was one of the three persons who were injured in the firing and knife attack by Farooq Ahmed, president of AIMIM Adilabad district unit and a former deputy chairman of Adilabad municipality, following a clash between two groups.

Difficulties in implementing free water scheme in Hyderabad

water scheme

By Mohammed Hussain Ahmed

Hyderabad: The implementation of free water scheme in Greater Hyderabad is facing many hurdles.  Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) had announced in the GHMC election manifesto to provide 20,000 liters of free waters to the residents of Greater Hyderabad.

A report says, “keeping its promise, TRS government had issued instructions.  However, the Hyderabad Metro Water Works and Sewerage Board are awaiting necessary guidelines for the implementation of the scheme.”

Aadhaar Card

“Aadhaar Card has been made mandatory for the residents to benefit from this scheme.  Such a condition seems unacceptable to the people as they are not willing to provide Aadhaar details”, the report says.

The Telangana High Court had opposed the mandatory provision of Aadhaar details in connection with properties registration.  In view of this, it has become difficult for the government to seek Aadhaar details.  The opposition has demanded abolition of Aadhaar details and demanded that the residents be provided 20,000 liters of free water.

Water meters

The report further says, “the second hurdle for the government is the availability of the water meters.  There are more than 50% of the households in the city with no water meters.  In such a case, how can the Water Board decide the free quantity of water?  The Board authorities have intimated the difficulties in implementing the scheme to the government.” “The officials of the Hyderabad Metro Water Works’ team would leave shortly for Delhi where they review the implementation of free water scheme.  Kejriwal Government is implementing free water scheme in Delhi through ‘Delhi Jal Board’.  The team would obtain details about the scheme in order to prepare guidelines for its implementation in Greater Hyderabad.  There no date is fixed for the implementation.  It is expected, however, that it will take a month to lay down the rules and the guidelines, the report concludes.

NAAC blacklists Hyderabad’s Malla Reddy College for 5 years

Hyderabad: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on Friday blacklisted the Malla Reddy Engineering College (MREC) in Kompally on charges of submitting fake documents to pass through the accreditation process. MREC is owned by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and minister for labour and employment Ch. Malla Reddy.

The NAAC, in its independent inquiries found several digitally forged certificates submitted for accreditation by the college in their Self Study Report (SSR) sent to the Council last December.

In a letter written to the college management by administrative officer M. Arun, he said that fake documents were found in the documents sent to the NAAC for re-assessment. “While processing the SSR dated December 13, 2019, submitted by your institution for re-assessment, the following discrepancies were noticed. The certificates purported to have been given by BHEL, Yash Technologies and Airtel appear to be fabricated in layer especially with the seal, signature and letterhead aspects. The digital expertise opinion obtained by us on the same also confirmed the possibility of digital fabrications,” the NAAC said in a letter.

“Hence it may be informed that your SSR dated December 13, 2019, has since been rejected and your institution has been blacklisted from the process of accreditation for a period of five years,” it added.

In 2018, Malla Reddy Engineering College was given a B++ grade by NAAC. This year, in order to get a better grading, the college management submitted a self-study report (SSR) with false claims. It also submitted fabricated documents pertaining to affiliation with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

Recently, a case was registered against minister Malla Reddy. A woman named Shyamala alleged that the minister had seized her land between two hospitals, which he owned. Apart from encroaching on their land, the minister also created fake documents for them and prevented them from stepping into her own land.

Hyderabad: This mosque in flooded Osman Nagar operates as health centre

Hyderabad: Proving that mosques can play a larger role beyond merely serving as places of worship, a city-based NGO set-up a health care centre in the mosque located in Osman Nagar, the area which is flooded for over 100 days now.

Helping Hand Foundation (HHF), in collaboration with US-based Support for Education and Economic Development (SEED), opened clinics in three mosques in the city, including Masjid Mohammed-e-Mustafa, Masjid-e-Ishaq, and now at Masjid Omer Al Shifa at Saif Colony in Osman Nagar.

Located in close proximity to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Osman Nagar has been one of the worst-affected localities following the heavy rains that ravaged the city in October. Houses in the locality had been inundated up to two-floor height, for nearly 100 days with no respite.

Now that the water is slowly reducing, HHF has set up a clinic in Masjid Omer Al Shifa, which was recently destructed in the floods.

“This Primary Health Care Centre in the mosque center will provide not only high-quality primary health services but will also have all adjuvant services like dental health, prevention and control of NCDs, children and women’s health and nutritional services,” said Mujtaba Hasan Askari, founder of HHF.

“This is a third public health care facility established in a Masjid,” added Askari.

The NGO embarked on the new initiative realizing the need to focus on the healthcare needs of women and children, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has made things worse for women and children’s health.

The centre, which is functional from the last week, was formally launched on Saturday and is catering to 200-250 out-patients daily. Most residents are still to recover fully from the aftershocks of the floods and dwindling economic situation and were in need of affordable and easily accessible health care services.

Committee urges KCR to de-reserve teacher posts for Urdu medium schools

Hyderabad: A committee of various associations on Saturday urged the Telangana state government to de-reserve teacher posts for Urdu medium schools to fill up the vacant positions.

The committee consisted of members from Urdu Struggle Organisation, All India Dag Foundation, and Telangana State Urdu Trained Teachers Association.

Addressing the media in city, the committee stressed that out of 900 teacher posts for Urdu medium schools in the state in 2017, only 347 have been filled up while 553 posts are vacant as they are reserved for SC, ST, BC (A,C & D) categories. Since there is no staff in these categories, these positions cannot be filled up. This is an irreparable loss to Urdu medium schools and its students, the organisation said.

The committee observed that most students going to Urdu medium schools hail from weaker sections classified below the poverty line, belonging to the Muslim community.

Syed Miskeen Ahmed, President All India Dag Foundation, Shaik Farooq Ali, General Secretary Telangana State Urdu Trained Teachers Association

Requesting the “de-reservation” of the posts, the committee submitted a representation to Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, minister for municipal administration and urban development Mr. K. Taraka Rama Rao, home minister Mr Mahmood Ali, finance minister Mr T. Harish Rao, education minister Mrs Sabitha Indra Reddy and Telangana state minorities commission chairman Mr Mohammed Qamaruddin.

S.G.T, School Assistant, LP & PETs teacher posts are reserved for S.C, S.T & B.C Categories. However, the committee urged the government to instead allow the vacant posts to be filled by candidates in the open category.

“There are several examples and G.Os showing how governments in the past have de-reserved the S.C, S.T and B.C categories for teachers posts in Urdu medium and filled up the same in open categories”, it noted.

While appreciating the steps taken by the government for the welfare of the minority communities, the committee also pointed that the Muslim community is educationally, socially, economically and politically most backward than other backwards communities in the state.

Kerala eye first win, Hyderabad look to bounce back (Preview Match 40)

Bambolim (Goa), Dec 26 : Still in the hunt for their first victory in the Indian Super League (ISL), Kerala Blasters will be aiming to end the year on a good note when they clash against Hyderabad FC at the GMC Stadium here on Sunday.

Both sides have played six matches so far with seventh-placed Hyderabad sitting just two places above Kerala on the table, but with a difference of six points. While Kerala have suffered three defeats, Hyderabad saw their unbeaten streak end in their previous game against Mumbai City.

Although conceding goals has been an issue plaguing Blasters since the start of the season, their attack is also yet to click. They have attempted just 54 shots in the season so far — the lowest by a team — and have also created the least chances per 90 minutes.

Kerala coach Kibu Vicuna expects his side to make improvements but knows they won’t have it easy against Hyderabad.

“Every game is difficult,” said Vicuna. “Hyderabad had positives in the last match (against Mumbai). They didn’t play bad but they lost. So yes, we are expecting a tough challenge but we are training well. We are improving and taking steps forward. I have confidence we are going to play a good match.”

Hyderabad will be aiming to expose Kerala’s vulnerable defence, which has the second-worst defensive record this season. But defensively, Manuel Marquez’s side has also been struggling of late. Five of the six goals they conceded this season have come in the last three games.

Unlike Hyderabad, who have been reliant on Aridane Santana for goals, Kerala have had six unique goal scorers — joint-most alongside Bengaluru FC. This presents a tricky challenge for Hyderabad.

“They (Kerala) have very good players and maybe they deserve more points than they have,” said Marquez. “They have great players in all positions from the goalkeeper until the forwards and the coach (Vicuna) won the I-League last season. For sure, it will be an equal game. Let’s see what happens.”

Hyderabad: As a part of its fight against the Corona pandemic, a Hyderabad-based start-up ‘H-Bots Robotics’ has come up with a robotic disinfectant named ‘ACCORD’.

Speaking to ANI, Kishan, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of H-Bots said that Robotics has played an equal role to any other field of work that contributed in the ongoing pandemic situation. Right from sanitisation to disinfection, robots have been used at various levels and moreover they have even been used in food delivery and even in doctor-patient interaction across the globe during a pandemic.”

Fight against Covid-19

‘ACCORD’, he said is H-Bots’ attempt to contribute in the fight against Covid-19.

“During the pandemic, disinfectants have been on a demand, so we have decided to work on a robotic disinfectant and develop it. While researching this, we found out that there are already people working on the same. But the major difference that we brought in was the cost reduction of the product and it’s functioning. ‘Accord’ will be available at a range between Rs 2.5 lakh rupees to Rs 7 lakh and is available in manual, semi-manual and autonomous varients,” Kishan said.

Kishan says he discoverd his interest in robotics 10 years ago when he was pursuing his bachelor’s degree in technology. Since then he was very keen on robotics. With this interest, in 2017, he set up ‘H-Bots’ along with two other friends. H-Bots while working on developing various artificial intelligence (AI) robots also works as research and development (R&D) on various real-time problems and in developing new technology and setting up labs at various educational institutions.

“India can be a player in the field of robotics. Currently, post-Covid situation has brought up India to be a better consumer in the field of robotics. But we aim to make India not just a consumer of robotics products but a manufacturer,” he said.

Abhishek, Director of H-Bots said, “With the increasing demand for the robotics products, we are trying to bring ‘ACCORD’ to an international platform and are talking to other countries and international organisations.”
