Hyderabad: Internet giant Google on Thursday began work here on its largest campus outside of its headquarters in the US.

The 3 million square feet building is coming up at Gachibowli, the information technology cluster. The company also unveiled the design of the campus coming up at the 7.3-acre site it acquired in 2019.

Telangana’s Information Technology Minister K.T. Rama Rao said he was super excited to break the ground for Google’s largest campus outside of their headquarters at Mountain View, the US.

The building prioritises sustainability and energy efficiency throughout its design. Upon commissioning, it will offer a highly skilled tech workforce a healthy, collaborative workplace that is both resilient and adaptable, designed to serve the city for years to come, Google said.

“I am pleased that Google is deepening its roots in Hyderabad through this landmark building which incorporates sustainability into its design, keeping in mind Hyderabad’s large and future-focused talent pool,” said Rama Rao, who unveiled the building design at a ceremony held onsite.

The campus was originally planned as a 2 million square facility with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. An agreement was signed between the Telangana government and Google in 2015 when Rama Rao had visited the company headquarters in California.

Google currently operates out of a leased facility in Kondapur in Hyderabad and employs about 7,000 people. The new campus, which was earlier expected to be ready in 2019, is likely to nearly double the headcount.

Meanwhile, Google on Thursday signed an MoU with the Telangana government to support and accelerate its vision of leveraging technology for sustainable economic development and inclusive social development.

Under this new initiative, Google will collaborate with the government through its various arms to extend scholarships for Google Career Certificates to Telangana’s youth, support women entrepreneurs through digital, business and financial skills training, and strengthen the government’s school modernisation efforts with digital teaching and learning tools and solutions.

As part of the joint effort, Google will also support the Telangana government’s efforts to improve public transportation and use of digital technologies in agriculture.

KTR, as the minister is popularly called, noted that Google has been working with the Telangana government since 2017, using its solutions to support “our vision of a Digital Telangana and furthering our mutual aim of making every citizen digitally empowered”.

“Our previous MoUs with them have resulted in some great initiatives that have positively affected citizens from all walks of life. This time we are focusing on making a step-change in communities such as youth, women, and students and in citizen services,” he said.

Sanjay Gupta, Country Head & Vice President, Google India, noted that Hyderabad has been home to one of Google’s largest employee bases since they started operations in India.

“Over the years, we have partnered with the Telangana government to bring the benefits of Google’s technologies and programs to serve the needs of people in the state. Today, we are pleased to strengthen our association to support and accelerate the efforts of the Telangana government to help youth learn the right skills for employment, support women entrepreneurs with digital skills, and modernise schools for children,” he said.

“These efforts and investments in Hyderabad are part of our larger commitment to India and are designed to address key areas of the country’s rapidly-changing digital landscape. These efforts complement our overarching mission in India, that focuses on enabling more affordable access to the internet for every Indian, building safer and new helpful experiences that answer India’s distinct needs, empowering businesses of all sizes as they make their digital transformation journey, and using the power of AI to address big social challenges,” he added.

Hyderabad: Major Eidgahs get spruced up for Eid-ul-fitr

Hyderabad: With just a handful days left for Eid, prominent Eidgahs in the city have begun getting ready to prepare for the large number of Muslim devotees who will gather for prayers.

At the Eidgah Mir Alam, which is over 200 years old, workers are busy giving a coat of paint to the old structure, while  other labourers are clearing wild vegetation and grass that is protruding out from the gaps in the shahbad stone flooring.

Outside the premises, contractors are busy getting BT roads re-carpeted, so that all roads leading to the Eidgah are good. The GHMC sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh for various works at the Mir Alam Eidgah in connection with the Eid ul Fitr to be celebrated next week.

On Thursday, a joint inspection of the Eidgah was done by officials of different departments to have better coordination. Around 2 lakh people attend the Eid ul Fitr prayers every year at the Mir Alam Eidgah. The Eidgah was established around 1805 by Mir Alam Bahadur or Mir Abul Qasim, a Paigah noble and worked with the Nizam’s.

People from various neighbouring districts of Hyderabad like Vikarabad, Nalgonda, Medak, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy visit the Eidgah to attend the congregational prayers.

While many think Mir Alam is the oldest Eidgah of Hyderabad, they are wrong. In fact the Eidgah at Madannapet popularly known as the Purani Eidgah of Hyderabad is around 400 years old. It was built during the Qutb Shahi (or Golconda) dynasty in the 16th century.

Around 50 to 60 thousand people gather there to offer the Eid prayers. Inside the Eidgah premises around 15,000 attend prayers while another 35 to 40 thousand attend prayers outside on the roads. The GHMC and the Telangana State Wakf Board sanctioned a special budget for making the arrangements. INTACH’s Hyderabad chapter has also conferred the its Heritage Award in 2011 Eidgah at Madannapet.

Similarly, the Qutb Shahi tombs, where the Golconda kings are buried, also has an Eidgah. Arrangements for Eid-ul-Fitr prayers are being made at there, the Eidgah Balamrai at Secunderabad, Eidgah Pahadishareef and other places.

An official delegation that will include Telangana home minister Mohd Mahmood Ali, officials of the Telangana State Waqf Board and senior officials of various government departments will visit in next few days to inspect the works.

Kalyana Lakshmi Scheme

Hyderabad: Alleviating the financial burden of girls’ marriage in Telangana, the Kalyana Lakshmi Scheme, is seen as a boon for the many poor families in the state.

Vivek, a resident of Hyderabad hailed the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme on Thursday saying that it helped him to marry off his sister during the COVID pandemic.

Vivek, son of Anju, while speaking to ANI said, “My sister, Varsha got married last year to Manoj Kumar. As there was a COVID situation, at that time it was getting difficult to arrange a certain amount for marriage. So we had to take a loan and keep my sister’s marriage on hold.”

“Later, as it was getting difficult to repay the debt, one of the senior leaders Anil told us that there is a Kalyana Lakshmi scheme for poor people which can help them to overcome their financial problems,” added Vivek.

The State Government launched the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme to provide financial assistance in the form of a one-time grant of Rs 1,00,116 to unmarried girls (above 18 years of age) from SC, ST, BC and EBC. (with a combined income of both parents not exceeding Rs 2,00,000 per annum) at the time of their marriage. This initiative not only curbed child marriages to a significant extent but also alleviated the financial burden of girls’ marriage.

He further said, “We applied for the Kalyana Laxmi scheme. Due to that welfare scheme, we got an amount of Rs 1,00,116 (One lakh One hundred and sixteen rupees). As we couldn’t repay the loan, the financers used to come home for recovery every day. The amount was very helpful and we cleared the loan as well. He further thanked Chief Minister KCR and Minister KTR for introducing the scheme.”

Anju, the mother of Varsha said that she postponed her daughter’s marriage in the month of February 2021. “Due to the COVID pandemic, nobody helped us. It was the CM KCR scheme that relieved us from the debt burden,” she added.

Hyderabad: A pious atmosphere can be seen near the historic Makkah Masjid near Charminar in Hyderabad as thousands started gathering to attend the congregational Jumat ul Vida (last Friday of Ramzan afternoon prayers) here.

The prayers are being held after a gap of two years due to Covid restrictions in the state.

Dressed in traditional attire, people of all ages can be seen getting inside the vast Makkah Masjid complex from all the three entrance doors – two facing the Charminar Unani Hospital and the other one from the Laad Bazaar bangle market side. Around 10,000 people can gather at the Mecca Masjid while another 15,000 more sit outside the mosque.

The Minority Welfare Department made arrangements by furnishing the Makkah Masjid with carpets and erecting tents to shelter the public from heat. A few good Samaritans also erected tents on their own for ‘sawab’ (good deed) purposes.

As a practice, people attend the prayers at the biggest mosque on Jumat ul Vida and in Hyderabad, those from the city visit Makkah Masjid. Also, Muslims from far nearby districts come to attend the last Friday prayers at the Mecca Masjid.

In Secunderabad, people visit the Jamia Masjid in Secunderabad where again around 12,000 people attend.

As the time for prayers nears several youngsters holding a bottle of ‘attar’ (perfume) stand on the routes leading to the mosque and rub it on the hand of those heading to the ‘namaz’. In a few places, some voluntary groups made arrangements for ablution by providing water camps.

Maulana Hafeez Rizwan Qureshi will be leading the prayers at the mosque at 1.15 p.m.

Meanwhile, the traffic police asked people attending the prayers to park their vehicles at the Charminar bus stand, Khilwat Old Pension Payment office, Khilwat playground, Mufeed ul Anam school at Alijah Kotla Road, Gulzar Function Hall at Etebar Chowk, and Charminar Unani Hospital.

After the prayers, All India Majlis e- Ittehadul Muslimeen Chief Asaduddin Owaisi will be speak in connection with the Youmul Quran program.
