Telangana HC orders status quo in ‘Jhund’ case

Telangana HC slaps Rs 10 lakh cost on filmmaker seeking stay on 'Jhund'

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has ordered status quo on a petition by Hyderabad-based filmmaker Nandi Chinni Kumar seeking a stay on the release of the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer ‘Jhund’ on OTT platform and satellite broadcasting.

Justice P. Sree Sudha ordered the respondents to file a counter to the petitioner’s application seeking a temporary injunction.

The court posted the case for further hearing to June 8 and directed both the parties to maintain status till then.

Chinni Kumar told IANS that he filed the plea seeking orders to restrain the makers of the film and other respondents from broadcasting ‘Jhund’ through OTT platform and satellite broadcasting in any manner pending disposal of the review petition challenging the order of the trial court.

The trial court had last month dismissed Kumar’s plea to recall the compromised decree issued last year and stay the release of the movie citing violation of the settlement agreement by movie makers.

Since the trial court had reserved its orders and the movie was scheduled to be released on March 4, he approached the high court seeking orders to stop the release.

The high court not only dismissed his petition but slapped a cost of Rs 10 lakh for suppressing information pertaining to the case he had filed at a lower court on the same subject.

The court was told that a settlement agreement was already arrived between the makers of the movie and Kumar. As part of this, Kumar was paid Rs 5 crore.

Kumar filed a review petition, challenging the order by the division bench of the high court and the same is pending.

‘Jhund’ is a biographical sports film based on the life of Vijay Barse, the founder of NGO ‘Slum Soccer’.

“Under the settlement agreement, all the cases should have been withdrawn but a case filed by Akhilesh Paul in Nagpur court was not withdrawn,” Kumar had earlier told IANS.

Paul has challenged an agreement reached with Kumar in 2017 selling him exclusive rights to make a movie titled “Slum Soccer” on his life.

Vijay Barse, on whose life ‘Jhund’ is based, is the coach of Akhilesh Paul.

Kumar had approached a city court in 2020 alleging copyright violation by makers of ‘Jhund’.

He had submitted that though director Nagraj Manjule and producers bought rights to make a movie on the life of Vijay Barse, ‘Jhund’ also showcases Akhilesh Paul’s story in a major role, thus allegedly violating the copyright.

Kumar claimed he won the case in trial court, high court and also in the Supreme Court.

Though this finally led to settlement agreement, he said the movie makers failed to ensure withdrawal of all cases, thus mentally torturing him.

Kumar in his petition challenging the order of the trial court has made 13 individuals or companies as respondents and they include Amitabh Bacchan.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Osmania University uncertain, officials hesitant to take call

Hate, violence and exclusion weakening the country: Rahul

Hyderabad: Despite several media reports stating that the Osmania University administration has denied permission for the Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s visit on May 7, administrators at the university have denied the claims, noting that no decision has yet been made.

Leaders of various student bodies, on the other hand, allege that permission has been denied, informally. In an Executive Council meeting, the university also reportedly rejected the installment of CCTV cameras on the campus in wake of Rahul’s visit.

While several students had requested the High Court to intervene to enable the MP’s visit, tensions prevailed within the university as activists of the TRS Vidyarthi Vibhagam (TRSV) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) opposed his visit.

“The permission for Rahul Gandhi’s visit has been unofficially denied but the official statement will be released on May 2,” the chairman of Telangana Students Unemployed JAC (joint action committee), Manavatha Roy, told Siasat.com.

ABVP student leader, Srihari, corroborated the statement saying that if a decision has been reached unofficially, consider the permission denied.

However, while speaking to Siasat.com, an official at the university clarified that no decision has been made so far, as the university remains skeptical of the repercussion of the political leader’s visit.

“We haven’t come to a decision yet. The rumors might be rooting from the ban that has been imposed on political rallies at the University, since 2021 and from the petition filed with the court,” said a spokesperson of the University.

The university, which had been the heart of the Telangana agitation, 2021 imposed a ban on all political rallies within the institutions including the burning of effigies, display of banners, and all unacademic activities or gatherings.

Roy and three other students had filed a lunch motion plea with the High Court on Friday, requesting that the institution accept the visit. However, they were asked to file a house motion on Monday, as Friday marked the last working day of the court before the summer break.

While the students approached the High Court seeking its intervention to allow the visit, the dean of PG College of Law, Prof G Vinod Kumar has come out in support of Gandhi’s visit to the institution.

In the circular dated 22 June 2021, “political, and religious organizations shall not organise any gatherings as per the honorable court’s orders”.

There has been a history of protests and mass agitations being launched within the campus.

In the four decades between 1969 and 2009, OU became the de-facto location where the concept of a separate state simmered through discussions and representations, the aim of which was fulfilled with the formation of Telangana in 2014.

The couple Gousia Begum and Munner Khan got financial assistance through the scheme for the marriage of their two daughters. She has applied for the scheme again for the marriage of her third daughter.

Speaking to ANI, Gousia Begum said, “I have three daughters. I always used to think about how would I perform the marriages of my daughters since our financial condition is not that good. We did the marriage of our first daughter three years back. But, We got debt-ridden due to marriage expenses. Then our neighbour told us about the Shaadi Mubarak scheme. We then applied and got Rs 75,000.”

Begum said she got Rs 1,00,116 after the marriage of her second daughter.

“We have done the marriage of the third daughter recently. We applied for the Shaadi Mubarak scheme. Hopefully, after getting the amount, we will be free from all my debts. After the TRS government came to the power, many changes were made. Their are several schemes for the poor. CM KCR is like my big brother. In today’s time, no one even relatives offer support,” she said.

Munner Khan said unlike other parties, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) kept its promises. Khan lauded Chief Minister KCR for the welfare schemes of the poor.

“We know how we have performed the marriage of our three daughters. We had to borrow funds on interest. It was very difficult to repay the loans. The Shaadi Mubarak scheme came as a relief. Our heartfelt thanks to KCR sir. There is no party like TRS. Many parties make promises but no one stands by their words,” he said.

Another beneficiary of the scheme Ibrahim Khan said, “I benefited from Shaadi Mubarak scheme. It has helped us a lot. I have two daughters. I was burdened with debt after my first daughter’s marriage. After applying for the Shaadi Mubarak scheme, I got Rs 1,00,116 which helped me to clear the dues. Chief Minister KCR helped the poor a lot. He is a very good leader.”

Hyderabad: HMDA plans smaller plots to attract middle class

Hyderabad: Leaders of the Uppal Farmers’ Association on Sunday expressed outrage that the layout created in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA)’s bagayat lands, which collected from farmers in 2021, have run out of basic amenities.

In a meeting held by farmers’ unions in Uppal, the bagayat plot owners said that the HMDA was failing to provide minimum facilities as per the norms given in the layout.

They expressed concern that even after half of the structures in the layout had been completed, the construction of the drinking water facility, sewage treatment plant, club House, swimming Pool, modern cemetery and bagayat Association building had not been undertaken to date. The officials said that they should arrange a meeting with the farmers’ association leaders and bagayat plot owners to resolve the issues or else they would protest.

Last year in December, the e-auction of HMDA’s Uppal Bagayat layout broke all the previous records, and yielded the highest price of Rs 1,01,000 per square yard for a residential plot. A total 23 plots ranging from 150 square yards to 1,787 square yards, totalling to 19,719 square yards were auctioned online in two sessions. The auction yielded approximately Rs 142 crore for the urban development authority.
