Hyderabad: SUVs stolen from city used for drug smuggling at Pak border

Hyderabad: At least five SUVs stolen from the city last year were found in Rajasthan, being used for smuggling drugs at the Pakistan border.

Out of the five stolen vehicles, three were recently seized by the Rajasthan police in a drug bust. Another car was found abandoned in Jaipur. The prime accused in the case has been identified as, Satyender Singh Shekhawat an MBA graduate, who took to smuggling.

Shekhawat used duplicate keys and Chinese gadgets to steal cars, he revealed to the Hyderabad police during investigation. The police said that the 41-year old accused used to steal cars from various locations in Hyderabad including, Banjara Hills, Petbasheerabad, Nacharam and Dundigal.

Three of these were stolen from parking lots of apartments or from outside the victim’s houses. Police teams from Nacharam and Banjara Hills were unable to arrest Shekhawat from Jaipur in August 2021. In February this year, the Bangalore police nabbed the accused from Jodhpur. Folllowing his arrest, Shekhawat was brought to Hyderabad.

It is to be noted that Shekhawat is a serial offender, who stole 21 cars between 2018 and 2021. He committed the offence across the country including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. The MBA-graduate has been arrested by police from eight states.

Nizamabad ‘cow’ deaths: Animals being transported were bulls, say cops

Hyderabad: Thirteen bulls that were illegally being transported in a vehicle resembling an ambulance were charred to death on Saturday night in Telangana’s Nizamabad district after the vehicle caught fire. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the animals transported were cows but the Nizamabad police commissioner has confirmed that they were bulls.

The truck was on its way to Hyderabad from Nizamabad when it caught fire on National Highway 44 in the night.

“Yesterday night, 10 cows were transported to Slaughterhouse in ‘Ambulance’ from Nizamabad to Hyderabad, 8 cows were burnt alive in the ambulance and the driver is on the run. @TelanganaDGP should immediately act against the people behind this,” Goshamal MLA and BJP leader Raja Singh tweeted on Sunday.

Siasat.com spoke to Nizamabad Commissioner of Police K R Nagaraj about the accident. The senior police officer said that a post-mortem was done on the charred bodies by a veterinary doctor who confirmed that they were bulls and not cows.

“The reason for the fire was mostly due to a short circuit in the vehicle. It was not a proper ambulance vehicle. It was a tempo that was modified into an ambulance by placing a siren,” he added.

He further said that the driver has been taken into custody for interrogation.

Asked why were the animals being transported illegally, the senior police officer speculated that the Ramzan festival was one of the reasons. “We are yet to conduct a full interrogation of the driver but it is possible that the bulls were been taken for Ramzan feasts,” he said.

KCR afraid of letting Rahul Gandhi visit OU, says Revanth Reddy

Malkajigiri MP Revanth Reddy appointed new TPCC chief

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief A Revanth Reddy on Sunday asked why chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) was so afraid to let National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visit the campus of Osmania University and interact with students.

Revanth said that senior Congress leaders Jagga Reddy, and V Hanumantha Rao had asked for permission from the university to allow Gandhi’s visit. “Why is KCR so afraid of letting Rahul Gandhi visit the campus? Why is he getting in the way?” he asked. He added that the people must understand KCR’s disposition based on how he is impeding Gandhi’s visit.

Ambiguity looms over Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the OU campus, owing to the universities rule of disallowing gatherings and speeches of political nature on the campus. Even with the Congress student wing claiming that the MP’s visit was not for political gain, sources from the college say that permission is most likely to be denied.

Hyderabad: ATMs go dry ahead of Eid ul Fitr festival

Hyderabad: Rs 1 lakh stolen from an exhibition at Star Hotel

Hyderabad: Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in the city have gone dry ahead of the Eid ul Fitr festival. Complaints about people unable to draw cash from the ATMs are pouring in from the older parts of the city especially the market places leading to problems for the public.

Not all traders accept e-payment, they insist on cash, and getting it is a strenuous task. I visited at least five ATMs and was unable to get cash,” said Abdul Fareed, an engineering student from Yakutpura.

There are about 300 ATM kiosks in the Old City including in thickly populated areas of, Chandrayangutta, Tappachabutra, Vattetpally, Bhavaninagar, Kalapather, Yakutpura, Tadban, and Kishanbagh.

Long queues are seen at the ATM wherever by luck one finds cash in the dispenser, otherwise, people are going merry-go-round in search of the ATM. Sunday being a holiday for banks, people especially the salaried class, who are paid on the month-end day, faced the heat as they were unable to withdraw money.

The cash agencies, as a practice, replenish a fixed amount of cash in the ATM dispensers; however, considering the huge volume of the public, the cash was withdrawn within a few hours.

In fact, during the last days of the Ramzan month, the people shop around at small traders for vermicelli, nuts, Mehandi cones, vegetables, and meat. “At small trader establishments we are facing problems, they don’t have Point of Sale (PoS) machines nor ready to accept e-payments like G pay or Phonepay for fear of e-frauds,” said Mohd Shakeel, a resident of Jahanuma.

Mohd Shakeel, an advocate from Moghalpura said for small purchases of Rs 100 or Rs 200 people need cash, and wherever ATMs are dispensing Rs. 2,000 0r Rs. 500 currency notes. “It is a major problem because for change we need to run around again,” he pointed out.

People request the supervisory authorities to replenish the cash at the earliest to avoid inconvenience to the public.

Hyderabad: As Eid approaches, Kolhapuri footwear in huge demand

Eid-ul-Fitr in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: With Eid ul Fitr round the corner, the rows of shops opposite the Nayaab Hotel near Nayapul selling the famous Kolhapuri chappals are back in focus. Usually, worn along with the traditional attire ‘kurta pyjama’, this variety of footwear competes successfully with the biggest and famous brands of slippers and sandals.

Thanks to its graceful look, the footwear basically manufactured in certain districts of Maharashtra is most sought during the festive season in Hyderabad. It also finds takers in almost all the districts of Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh as well.

Around 50 traders sell the footwear at the Old city market and a handful of others at Secunderabad and Sultan Bazaar markets. The handmade ‘Kolhapuri chappal’ and ‘chadavah’ are in full demand this season.

“The demand for the footwear is growing with time. One reason is these days youngsters are wearing it in traditional attire or modern garments like jeans and trousers,” explained Mohd Zeeshan, trader at Nayapul market.

The footwear comes in various sizes and is priced accordingly. A pair cost anywhere between Rs. 100 to Rs. 400.  Traditionally the footwear comes in only brown and grey colour in basic design. Newer designs and colours are coming up now such as gold , orange, black, green, yellow, silver, purple, blue, red and pink.

Touching his historic part, Syed Zameer, another trader explains Kolhapuri footwear has been a part of Indian history for over 800 years and said to have been worn in the 13th century in Maharashtra. Previously known as Kapashi, Paytaan, Kachkadi, Bakkalnali, and Pukri, its name indicated the village where they were made.

A majority of the footwear is sourced from Kolhapur district in Maharashtra comprising several villages. Of late, a few artists from there migrated to the city and engaged in making the footwear at Jiyaguda and Tallabkatta in the old city. The original Kolhapuri is completely handmade and there are no nails hammered into it.

Several consider it one of the best footwear to use in summer as the vegetable-tanned leather can absorb the body’s heat and sweat, it keeps the body cool.

The gold was concealed in the rectum of the passengers, Customs officials said.

Both the male passengers arrived by flight 6E1714 from Doha. The officials said they acted based on intelligence and detected and seized the contraband.

This is the latest in a series of cases detected at Hyderabad airport in which passengers were found concealing gold in their rectum.

Rahul Gandhi to visit Osmania University despite no permission

Hyderabad: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will go ahead with his plans to visit Osmania University here on May 7 despite the authorities denying permission for the same, a senior party leader said on Sunday.

Member of Parliament Uttam Kumar Reddy declared that Rahul Gandhi will visit the campus and interact with students to know their problems.

He and several other leaders condemned the denial of permission by the university administration.

He also slammed Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government for denying permission for Rahul Gandhi’s visit. “When BJP leaders can visit Osmania University and address meetings and when birthdays of KCR and KTR can be celebrated, why can’t our leader visit the campus. Is it the property of CM KCR,” he asked.

He argued that the visit by Rahul Gandhi is not political in nature as he plans to go around the hostels and mess and interact with students to know about the problem of unemployment.

State Congress chief Revanth Reddy said since Osmania University played a key role in first and second phase of Telangana movement, Rahul Gandhi is keen to visit the campus to interact with students and gather details. “Why is KCR scared?” he asked.

Congress spokesperson Dr Dasoju Sravan also slammed the KCR government for denying permission for Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with students in Osmania University campus. “Why is KCR and KTR company fearing Rahul Gandhi so much,” he asked.

Sravan alleged that the TRS government has been stooping to new lows with arrests of NSUI and Youth Congress members. He challenged TRS Working President and minister K.T. Rama Rao to an open discussion in front of Arts College, on the issue of students and unemployed youth of Telangana.

“It is absolutely shameful that the TRS government has denied permission for Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Osmania University. KCR, KTR and company should remember that it was because of Congress President Sonia Gandhi that Telangana state was achieved and all the power being enjoyed by KCR and his family is because of her. Forgetting everything, how can they deny permission to Soniaji’s son, when he wanted to visit OU to know about students and unemployed youth’s problems?” he questioned.

Earlier in the day, when NSUI and Youth Congress activists held protests at Osmania University and Ministers Quarters, Banjara Hills, they were arrested. Police even took TPCC Working President T. Jagga Reddy into preventive custody, when he visited Banjara Police Station to inquire about the arrest of NSUI activists.

Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Telangana on May 6 and 7. He will attend a public meeting at Warangal on May 6. He is scheduled to hold a meeting with party leaders at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on May 7. He will also meet family members of some Telangana martyrs.

NSUI members protest

Hyderabad: Congress’ student wing National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Sunday protested outside the administration building of Osmania University in Hyderabad seeking permission for Rahul Gandhi’s visit to campus on May 7.

“It has been decided that Rahul Gandhi will address the students here at the Osmania University on May 7. So we (NSUI) have come here to give a representation to the Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University but he is not giving us the permission (to hold Rahul Gandhi’s visit) as he has been ordered to do so by the government of Telangana,” said Mahesh, member of NSUI.

The police have detained the NSUI members protesting in the universities and a case has been registered for obstructing the public servant in conducting their duty.

“18 people who were protesting in the administration’s building have been taken into custody. When we tried to stop the agitators they pushed our staff including lady constables. Hyderabad: Outside the ‘system’, inter-state migrants make footpaths home

$

Hyderabad: It is looked down upon by members of Debari community when a girl is unmarried after the age of 16. However, Pooja, 17 years old, has gone against the odds to support her family of four.

She travelled 1350 km south of her village, Debari (Rajasthan), to Hyderabad in Telangana so she could earn money to fund her ailing father’s medical bills.

For someone who had never travelled beyond their village, Pooja underwent a two-night and three-day long train journey to reach Hyderabad for her livelihood. She, along with her uncle’s family of five, travelled to Chittaurgarh from Debari, after which they took a Hyderabad-bound train two-and-a-half months ago in February. They will make the same journey back to Debari once the Deccan monsoon season begins.

And till they go back, Pooja and her extended family members, a total of 60 odd people, call a 2.5/80-metre stretch of footpath outside the Mehdipatnam garrison their home. They make a living out of selling toys at traffic junctions. She sends the money she makes back to her parents in the village, so it could cover her father’s medical expenses.

The ubiquitous toy sellers across traffic signals we see everyday, are essentially migrant workers who travel to the Deccan to make money every year due to lack of opportunities back home. It’s a routine that cities across India witness, which tells us of the stark realities from rural India.

“We can go beg for money or rely completely on charity, but we don’t want to live like that. We will make an honest living, and go back when the rains come,” said Nirmala Vagariya, a 28-year-old mother of four, who lives with her family on the same footpath at Mehdipatnam.

Traditionally, these families relied on making brooms out of date palms (known as khajoori locally) in foothills of the Aravalli range. However, due to various adverse circumstances, they abandoned their craft and turned to seasonal migration relying on odd jobs for a living.

For 30-year-old Dinesh Lal, who is Nirmala’s husband and Pooja’s uncle, this is the third trip he has made in the last two years. “When the country was locked down due to COVID-19, we had to take a loan of rupees 60,000 from a local landlord to sustain ourselves. The interest on it keeps mounting. So far in this trip, we have managed to save Rs 14,000 collectively.” he said.

Once the younger generation saves enough to sustain themselves for a few months, they go back to their village to take care of the elders of their families whom they leave behind.

A typical workday for the migrant toy vendors begins at 4 pm and ends 12 hours later, at 4 am the following morning. They then sleep on the footpath in their makeshift shelters, wake up around 8 am in the morning and continue till it’s time for work again. In the meanwhile, they cook, wash their clothes, eat, and sleep all on the small piece of scorching hot cement footpath. The women use Mehdipatnam bus stop’s paid public toilet services.

Nirmala Vagariya prepping her ‘kitchen’ before she starts cooking a meal for her family. (Photo: Almaas Masood / Siasat.com)

“As a family of five, we require a minimum of Rs 300 to survive per day. The paid-toilet facility charges us Rs 30 for one shower, and Rs 10 if we have to use the washroom. Apart from that, we require Rs 250 to buy flour and other rations to cook. Since there is no electricity available to us, we pay Rs 10 to nearby shops to charge our phones,” said Nirmala, while explaining her daily routine in Hyderabad.

They also rely on local people’s day-to-day acts of kindness to keep safe from the wrath of officials. “The owner of Shah Ghouse provides us with water, which suffices for our day-to-day needs. People also stop by and donate clothes to them every now and then.” Dinesh and Nirmala collectively said.

“The police have asked us to vacate this place as soon as Ramzan is over. We have not thought about what we will do next. We will see when Ramzan is over.” they added.

Meanwhile, one of the soldiers responsible for security at the Mehdipatnam garrison said, “These people usually keep to themselves. They are not around through the night and are only seen during the day. We do not see any harm in letting them stay around the garrison as long as they do not create trouble for anybody.”

Parents of another four young boys, who did not want to be named, said, “We miss our home. We spot so many wild animals and be surrounded by greenery. Now we have headaches from all the honking and traffic. We can’t even go for manual daily-wage work. Who would look after our children then? What to do? We can’t fill our children’s stomachs with all the views.”

Every year, Telangana witnesses an inflow and outflow of seasonal migrants who come to the state in search of a better livelihood. The main reason for it is the availability of better work opportunities and appreciation of their skills in the state. However, when inter-state seasonal migrant workers such as Dinesh and Nirmala prefer to find odd jobs independently, they bypass the ‘system’. This prevents them from availing the security and benefits assured by the Inter-state migrant workmen Act, 1979.

Hyderabad: Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit, NSUI activists arrested

protest

Hyderabad: Protests staged by student groups in Osmania University continued on Monday against authorities denying permission for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the campus on May 7.

Police arrested leaders of the Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU JAC) when they staged a protest in front of Arts College on the campus.

Alleging that the university authorities denied permission for Rahul’s visit at the behest of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, they demanded that the Congress leader be allowed to visit the campus to interact with the students.

Police arrested the JAC leaders and shifted them to police station. Police have beefed up security on the campus in view of the continuing protests by student groups.

Large number of policemen was deployed in the campus after Sunday’s incident in which proestors led by NSUI state president Venkat Balmoor stormed into the OU administrative building and tried to barge into the locked Vice Chancellor’s office.

They broke glass panes of the door, raising slogans against the Vice-Chancellor and the government, alleging the Vice Chancellor was acting at the behest of the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

They were booked for unlawful assembly, assault, rioting, trespass and preventing public servants from discharging their duties.

On a complaint by a woman police constable, the arrested NSUI leaders were also charged with attempting to outrage her modesty.

Venkat Balmoor and 17 others were produced before a magistrate, who sent them to judicial custody for 14 days.

Congress MP and incharge of party affairs in Telangana, Manickam Tagore has condemned the arrest of NSUI leaders and demanded their immediate release.

Leaders of student groups were also arrested on Sunday when they staged a protest at Minister’s Quarters in Banjara Hills.

When Congress MLA Jagga Reddy went to the police station to call on the arrested students and threatened to visit the OU campus, he was detained at the police station.

Jagga Reddy had last week approached the university authorities seeking permission for Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the campus. The university, however, refused permission for the same citing their earlier decision not to allow any public meeting on the campus.

The Congress leaders, however, claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s visit was not political. They said he would visit the hostel and mess and interact with students to know about their problems. They maintained that he has been visiting universities in different parts of the country.

MP Uttam Kumar Reddy announced that Rahul Gandhi will go ahead with a visit to the university.

He slammed the TRS government for denying permission for the visit.

“When BJP leaders can visit Osmania University and address meetings and when birthdays of KCR and KTR can be celebrated, why can’t our leader visit the campus. Is it the property of CM KCR?” he asked.

He argued that the visit by Rahul Gandhi is not political in nature as he plans to go around the hostels and mess and also interact with students to know about the problem of unemployment.

State Congress chief Revanth Reddy said since Osmania University played a key role in first and second phase of Telangana movement, Rahul Gandhi is keen to visit the campus to interact with students and gather details.

“Why is KCR scared?” he queried.

Telangana: RTC asks employee to take selfie with relative’s dead body

TSRTC to run buses from 4 am and increase number of busses

Hyderabad: According to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) officials, workers cannot take leaves. Some bus depots, including the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) terminal, have told their staff to produce proof to avail emergency leave.

In an unexpected decree, a driver who took leave to attend a funeral of a close relative was asked to produce a selfie with the body. “How can one expect someone to take a selfie with the body during the funeral. It is pathetic,” the driver was quoted by The New Indian Express.

While management is planning for more efficiency, the bus depots have taken on a ‘no leaves’ policy. Due to this, there is an increase in the number of ‘charge memos’ among drivers and conductors.

A similar case was reported this week, where a bus driver, identified as A Srinivas, died by suicide after receiving ‘charge memos’ for his absence from work.

V S Rao, a convenor of RTC-JAC said, ”As per the rules, the staff who work without taking leave would be given an incentive of Rs 1,500 for 100 days. But, in the present, the intention of encouraging the staff is defeated and being forced to work without leave.”

With this situation, another driver said, ”I have never come across a situation in over two decades of service. If this case continues, they may even take an extreme step like Srinivas.”

Hyderabad: Chicken prices shoot up ahead of Eid in the city

Hyderabad: Prices of chicken have increased in the city in view of the Eid ul Fitr festival and huge demand for it.

A kilogram of chicken meat is sold for Rs. 240 to Rs. 260 a kilogram in the retail market while the price of live poultry is around Rs. 140 to Rs. 150 a kilogram. The prices had come down to Rs. 220 a kilogram and Rs. 120 for poultry a week ago.

“Due to the Ramzan festival there is huge demand for poultry meat. Farmers are selling it at a higher price to the city market traders. So the burden is passed on to the customers,” said Ghalib Saif, a poultry trader at Chandrayangutta.

In March and April the chicken prices touched around Rs. 300 a kilogram in the market. Poultry farmers attributed it to the increase in cost of poultry feed. Basically the poultry is fed corn and soya and globally its prices increased.

The soaring temperatures are attributing to the rising prices of chicken. “Due to high temperatures the birds are dying in the farms. Farmers are at losses due to it also,” said Aravind Kumar, of a poultry farm at Ibrahimpatnam in Ranga Reddy district.

There are around 10,000 broiler farms in the State and around four crore broilers are produced every month. The produce is supplied to market in the State. In Hyderabad the supply is from Ibrahimpatnam, Kandukuar, Maheshwaram, Kothur, Shamshabad, and other adjoining districts like Sangareddy, Medak, Yadadri Bhuvangiri and Vikarabad.

Lack of vision by PM Modi root cause of all problems: KTR

Hyderabad: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao has once again trained his guns at the Narendra Modi government, this time over the coal shortage.

Listing out shortage of various essentials during BJP rule, he said the root cause of all problems is Prime Minister Narendra Modi lacking vision.

KTR, as Rama Rao is popularly known, slammed the Modi government through a tweet in Telugu on Monday.

KTR, who is also a minister holding multiple portfolios in the Cabinet headed by father and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, referred to the current shortage of coal in various parts of the country.

“Coal shortage in BJP rule, oxygen shortage during Corona times, electricity shortage for industries, job shortage for youth, employment shortage in villages and when it comes to state there is fund shortage,” tweeted KTR.

“The root cause of all problems ‘PM Modi lacks vision’,” he added. He took a dig at the Centre with the remark “NPA Govt’s amazing performance”.

KTR has been describing the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as NPA (Non-Performing Alliance).

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Revanth Reddy met NSUI activists of Osmania University (OU) who were remanded to judicial custody in the Chanchalguda jail on Monday.

The arrested students were leaders of the OU Joint Action Committee (OU JAC) who staged a protest in front of Arts College on the campus demanding that permission be granted for a visit by the senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Alleging that the university authorities denied permission for Rahul’s visit at the behest of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, Congress Youth Wing and National Student Union of India (NSUI) leaders demanded that the Congress leader be allowed to visit the campus to interact with the students.

Following a protest on Monday morning, NSUI state president Venkat Balmoor and 17 other students were arrested and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. They were booked for unlawful assembly, assault, rioting, trespass and preventing public servants from discharging their duties.

The TPCC president said in a tweet that the TRS Government is in a state of panic with Rahul’s visit to the state.

Along with Revanth Reddy, senior Congress leaders Jaggareddy, Geeta Reddy and Anjan Kumar Yadav also met the jailer and sought permission to meet with the students. Speaking with the media at the jail, Revanth said, “Telangana is turning into a mound of corpses as a result of farmers suicides. The farmers are struggling as the crop is not being sold. Rahul Gandhi is coming to stand by them in support. His visit to the ancient Osmania University is being denied by the TRS government.”

Revanth Reddy has stated that Rahul Gandhi has decided to meet with the jailed students during his visit to Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: Around 16 more students of Osmania University were detained by the OU police for protesting in front of the Arts college of the campus. The students were protesting against the university administration’s decision to not allow Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to visit the campus.

Senior members of the Osmania University-Joint Action Committee (OU JAC) were detained after they burnt effigies of Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR).

Chairman of Telangana Students Unemployed JAC (Joint Action Committee), K Manavatha Roy and president of the OU JAC, Pratap Reddy, were among the 16 others who were detained. Roy and Reddy were among the petitioners who appealed to the Telangana High Court last week, seeking permission for the visit.

On Sunday night, National Student Union of India (NSUI) state president Venkat Balmoor and 17 others were arrested for trying to barge into the locked Vice Chancellor’s office, breaking glass panes of the door and raising slogans against the Vice-Chancellor and the TRS government, who they alleged is impeding Gandhi’s visit to the campus.

State Congress chief Revanth Reddy said since Osmania University played a key role in first and second phase of Telangana movement, Rahul Gandhi is keen to visit the campus to interact with students and gather details. “Why is KCR scared?” he asked.

Hyderabad: In a breakthrough for next generation communication, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) on Monday announced a demonstration of the Extreme Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output), a key technology that is being considered for 5G-advanced and 6G deployment. Using multiple antennas at the base station, massive MIMO increases the coverage and capacity of cellular networks. This technology has become mainstream and is now an integral part of 5G.

Extreme massive MIMO refers to next-generation technology that uses very large antenna arrays.

The IITH developed an experimental research prototype with the aim to discover achievable performance limits. The first set of pilots conducted using 192 antennas and 48 radio frequency chains showed that up to 24-36 users could be served in the same spectrum. This is a 3-fold improvement over the state-of-the-art 5G massive MIMO technology, designed to support 12 simultaneous users.

“For cellular operators and users, this technology offers immense benefits; cell phone users will experience high-quality voice and video delivery in crowded areas like airports, malls, railway stations, etc.; cellular operators will be able to offer broadband wireless internet in rural households, dynamic steering of the cell site beams to reduce coverage holes in urban as well as rural areas”, said Prof Kiran Kuchi, Dean (R&D).

Prof Sai Dhiraj, the Lead Researcher for the project, said, “The research team at IITH continues to extend the boundaries of this technology. The ongoing investigations include new deployment topologies for indoor applications and outdoor cell sites. We are excited about this discovery and the possibilities offered by this new technology”.

Congratulating the IITH team for this noteworthy work, Prof B S Murty, Director, IITH, said, “Spectrum is a scarce natural resource. In countries like India, with a large population and limited wireline infrastructure, the demand for spectrum will continue to be very high. I am delighted that India takes an early lead in 6G research by showcasing the possibility of deploying next-generation networks using the extreme Massive MIMO technology developed by IITH.”

Expressing delight over this milestone, K Rajaraman, Secretary DOT, said, “IIT Hyderabad has been leading from the front in IP development. Their work on NB-IoT and other areas as part of the 5G testbed has been remarkable. We in the Department of Telecommunications are delighted to hear of the development of the Extreme Massive MIMO heralding even greater efficiency in the use of spectrum. I am sure that the IITH research team will play a significant role in the Government of India’s 5G advanced and 6G efforts”.
