Hyderabad: A person was washed away in flood water as heavy rain lashed Hyderabad early Tuesday, inundating low-lying areas and throwing normal life out of gear.

Heavy downpour, which began around 3 a.m., continued for 2-3 hours in many parts of the city and surroundings.

Congress has started showing its real colour: Kavitha on Bodhan clash

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it will file its response to BRS leader K Kavitha’s bail plea in a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam by August 22.

Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation, told a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan that the CBI’s counter affidavit has already been filed in the matter.

Raju said the ED’s counter affidavit was in the “pipeline” and would be filed by August 22.

The bench posted the matter for hearing on August 27.

The apex court had on August 12 sought responses from the CBI and the ED on Kavitha’s pleas challenging a July 1 Delhi High Court order denying her bail in the two cases.

The high court had dismissed Kavitha’s bail pleas in both the cases, saying she was prima facie one of the main conspirators in the criminal conspiracy related to the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

The CBI and the ED have lodged separate cases pertaining to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and implementation of the policy.

The ED arrested Kavitha (46) from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad on March 15. The CBI arrested her on April 11 from Tihar jail in connection with the corruption case.

Kavitha has denied all allegations.

Telangana minister to review hospital security after doctors’ protest

Hyderabad: Telangana health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha on Monday, August 20 agreed to examine hospital security as the junior doctors strike entered its seventh day.

A delegation of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) led by President Dr Rahul Kommu met the the minister and put forth its demands.

The junior doctors have requested the introduction of security arrangements with SPF forces in all government hospitals and medical colleges in the state as per GO 103.

Additionally, they asked for installation of CCTV cameras, and the deployment of trained security personnel in hospitals.

TJUDA also submitted a representation to the minister, pressing for implementation of the ‘Prevention of Violence Against Healthcare Professionals and Clinical Establishments Bill 2022’ and a provision for duty rooms for on-duty resident doctors at all government general and teaching hospitals.

“The junior doctors have requested the introduction of security arrangements with SPF forces in all govt hospitals and medical colleges in the state as per GO No. 103. Additionally, they asked for installation of CCTV cameras, and the deployment of trained security personnel in hospitals,”said a pres release from the minister’s office.

The doctors across the state have been protesting In solidarity, with the junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

From junior doctors to the senior-most surgeons were enraged, not because of this one incident that had abruptly ended the glorious career of a medico, but because it could happen to any woman irrespective of her profession or social standing.

Medicos decry lack of security at Telangana govt hospitals

“There was a time when only 10 percent of all doctors in this hospital used to be women. Today, whether it’s in PG or MBBS programs, 50 percent of the medicos are women. But the reality is that there are not even separate restrooms for male and female doctors in most of the departments,” a female PG medico from the OGH told Siasat.com, on condition of anonymity.

“There are just two beds crammed inside a small room where we are required to sleep during the night, and out of 30 doctors on night duty, at least half of them are women,” she underlined.

Doctors are expected to put in a marathon 45-hour shift at least once a month, and at least twice a week they are required to work night shifts.

The availability of proper changing rooms, sleeping areas, toilets, and bathrooms within the premises is crucial for the safety of female doctors. However, many government hospitals in Hyderabad, such as OGH, which was originally built in the 1920s with additional blocks added throughout the later part of the century, were constructed before the 2000s. These facilities were designed to meet the needs of the gender mix of doctors from that era.

Telangana: BRS accuses CM Revanth of signing fraudulent deal with Walsh Karra

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy lashed out at the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president, K T Rama Rao (KTR) for threatening to remove the statue of former Prime Minister, late Rajiv Gandhi which is set to be unveiled in front of the state Secretariat.

“Do you want to remove Rajiv Gandhi’s statue from the secretariat and replace it with your father’s?” Reddy asked KTR. The chief minister said that statues of those who looted Telangana in the name of a movement shouldn’t be placed in front of the secretariat.

He dared the BRS leaders to touch the statue of Rajiv Gandhi and warned that if they continue to speak such language, Telangana would be forced to socially boycott them.

“Rajiv Gandhi was the person who introduced technology to the country in the 1980s. He brought many reforms for women to excel in politics. He strengthened the panchayat raj system with a constitutional amendment which was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi,” said the chief minister, after garlanding the statue of Rajiv Gandhi at Punjagutta in the city on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

CM Reddy said that BRS leaders had lost power but their arrogance had not gone and claimed that the BRS would never come back to power. He announced that in the next 15-20 days the statue would be unveiled at a grand event.

On Monday, KTR took objection and demanded to remove Rajiv Gandhi’s statue in front of the Secretariat since the place was dedicated to a statue of the Telangana Thalli. “After four years when BRS forms its government in Telangana, the Rajiv Gandhi statue will be removed and replaced by the statue of the Telangana Talli statue,” he remarked.

The chief minister, however, claimed that KTR wants to install his father KCR’s statue. “The place next to Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial is suitable for the statue of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi who sacrificed his life for the country,” he said.

In a bitter attack on KCR, Reddy remarked that there was no place in front of the secretariat for ‘drunkards’ and ‘thieves’. CM Reddy also questioned BRS leaders why they never thought of installing Telangana Talli’s statue for ten years.

Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka slammed KTR over his criticism of the government for installing the statue of the late leader. He said that KTR was forgetting history and asserted that Hyderabad achieved tremendous progress in the information technology sector due to the initiative taken by Rajiv Gandhi.

He stated that it was on the suggestion of Rajiv Gandhi that then Congress chief minister Janardhan Reddy of Andhra Pradesh laid the foundation stone for HITEC City. The chief ministers who came after Janardhan Reddy continued the work to develop the sector.

Bhatti said Hyderabad and its surroundings have developed because of the foundation laid by the previous Congress governments.

92 Monkeypox cases confirmed in 12 countries, may spread globally: WHO

Hyderabad: A City-based pediatrician on Tuesday, August 20 shared the cause of and preventive measures against Mpox disease for which a warning has been issued.

Mpox or Monkey pox is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus, the same family of viruses that includes the variola virus which causes small pox. It is an endemic disease, most of its cases are found in Central and West Africa.

Countries including Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Nigeria, and Cameroon record most cases of Mpox. In these areas, the disease occurs sporadically with occasional outbreaks, particularly in rural or forested regions.

The Democratic Republic of Congo reports highest number of Mpox cases annually. Symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of fever, intense headache, Myalgia or general muscle ache, bach pain and swollen lymph nodes among others.

Lymphadenopathy is a distinguishing feature between Mpox and small pox. A person suffering from Mpox is likely to experience fatigue and frequent chills; rashes may develop in 1-3 days after the onset of fever. Initially, it appears on the face and spreads to other body parts including the palms, soles, and mucous membranes. The rash is generally painful before it scabs over.

Addressing the diagnosis of the disease, Dr K. Krishna Swaroop Reddy, a pediatric consultant at Apollo hospitals said, “Mpox can be diagnosed through  characteristic rash and history of potential exposure. Tests including Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of samples from skin lesions; Blood tests for virus identification. Serological tests can detect antibodies in some cases.”

Treatment for Mpox is largely supportive care focusing on relieving symptoms such as fever, pain, and dehydration. One must ensure adequate  fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Pain management could be done through over the counter pain relievers to alleviate headaches, muscle pain, and discomfort from the rash. Topical treatments may be applied to reduce itching and prevent secondary infections on the skin.

Antiviral medications including Tecovirimat which is specifically approved approved for the treatment of smallpox and monkeypox. It can reduce the severity and duration of the illness; Cidofovir and Brincidofovir should be used only in severe cases or for patients with weakened immune systems, though their use is off-label and typically limited.

For preventive measures the consultant stressed on  vaccination smallpox vaccines offer some protection against M Pox. Newer vaccines specifically for monkeypox are also available in some regions; avoiding contact with animals that could harbor the virus, especially in areas where the disease is endemic; isolation of infected persons to prevent the spread of the diseases.Frequent hand washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer.

Ikea piloting same-day delivery service in Hyderabad

New Delhi: Swedish furniture retailer Ikea said on Tuesday, August 20, that it is piloting same-day delivery in Hyderabad and has plans to scale it up across all its markets in the coming year.

Besides, it has also achieved the milestone of 100 per cent deliveries through EV-powered vehicles across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, as per its commitment for a sustainable value chain, said a statement from Ikea India.

The company also plans to achieve the same at its Mumbai operations, where it expects to reach the carbon-free goal in a few months, it said.

Now Ikea, as per its sustainability approach, will enter all new markets, including Delhi-NCR, where its next store is coming, with an EV-first approach, it added.

Currently, Hyderabad, Ikea stores are operational, Navi Mumbai, and Bengaluru, and two city stores in Mumbai.

Ikea India CEO Susanne Pulverer said: “For Ikea, a sustainable value chain is an essential part of our growth journey. This is just the first of the many milestones in that effort, and we are proud to lead the EV journey from our foundational years in India. We strongly believe that profit and planet can be co-created and will continue to lead with this mindset.”

Ikea India’s transition to 100 per cent electric last-mile delivery began in 2019. Initially, the store deployed 3-wheeled tuk-tuks, delivering thousands of orders a month. To accommodate larger furniture deliveries, the company also incorporated retrofit trucks into its operations and established in-house infrastructure for charging these electric vehicles.

Hyderabad Ikea and others launch 0% interest EMI

IKEA India has partnered with HDFC Bank by launching a convenient consumer financing option for purchasing furniture.

To facilitate customers buying their selected items, IKEA will provide an EMI-based financing option which would be useful to purchase furniture and home decor products in instalments, ruling out the financial challenges.

The service is currently available in IKEA stores and will soon be rolled out online.
