Bikers perform stunts with fireworks on roads in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Following a rise in dangerous bike stunts and illegal races, a group of bikers has sparked outrage after videos surfaced of them recklessly riding their motorcycles while setting off fireworks on roads in Hyderabad.

The reckless stunts were reportedly filmed in HITECH City.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) managing director, Sajjanar, voiced his dismay on X, stating, “What is this absurdity on Diwali? Where is society headed? Diwali is a day of spiritual significance as well as celebration. How reasonable is it to make a mockery of it with such inappropriate behaviour?”

Following the circulation of the video of the stunts on roads in Hyderabad on social media, many netizens have expressed their shock and frustration, calling for strict action against those involved. Several users have urged police officials to take swift measures to curb such reckless behaviour on the city’s roads.

Rise in reckless stunts on Hyderabad roads

Earlier, an auto rickshaw performed reckless stunts and created a disturbance on roads in Hyderabad. The video shared on October 24 by user ‘Raju Auto Driver’ on YouTube and later reposted by Arib Khan on Instagram showcases risky manoeuvres being executed in an autorickshaw, raising significant safety concerns.

The footage shows the auto-rickshaw driver performing stunts that endanger not only himself but also pedestrians and other motorists.

In a similar incident, a video recently surfaced showing a group of boys performing dangerous bike stunts on busy roads in Hyderabad. The stunts were filmed at Rajendra Nagar, on the roads beneath the PVNR Expressway.

In the video, one of the boys can be seen riding a bike while executing risky stunts, with a friend filming the entire act. The incident has sparked outrage online.

Telangana: Civil society concerned over back-to-back communal incidents

ACP and CI among 15 police personnel injured in stone-pelting near Muthyalamma temple in Secunderabad on Saturday.

Hyderabad: A handful of communal incidents within a year have raised concerns of the Telangana government’s efficacy in maintaining peace and harmony. A one-month ban on gatherings by the Hyderabad police commissioner has added credence to the perception that right-wing groups are now more active and trying to cause more trouble under a Congress-run government.

While the city police has been able to so far contain the situation, two incidents within a spate of few days in October have raised concerns. The first was the vandalism of an idol at the Muthyalamma temple in Secunderabad by a Muslim man named Salim from Maharastra. That led to a huge gathering and protest by Bajrang Dal and other right-wing groups, who almost attacked a mosque near the temple, but were prevented by the police from doing so.

A day or so after this, protests had erupted in Rein Bazar in Hyderabad over a communal post. Prior to this a few months ago, scores of Muslim-owned shops were burnt by a huge mob of over 3000 people in Jainoor mandal of Kumaram Bheem-Asifabad district in Telangana. The violence was sparked after a Muslim man attempted to sexually assault a tribal woman. In the ensuing violence, Muslim-owned shops were targetted, and still remain closed as the police is wary of more trouble.

“Right-wing groups are more active for sure in Telangana, as they always try to create more trouble under a Congress government. The ruling party also has leaders who are not fully experienced so maybe that is why they have not been able to grasp things fully. But they should give instructions to the police to contain any such incident and keep vigil,” said one of the advisors to the Telangana government, who did not want to be quoted.

Other activists from Hyderabad also said that the city has seen relative peace over the last 10 years, and that a change in the ruling party has allowed right-wing groups to get more active. “The government Telangana here is unable to control law and order here due to its internal politics. The home department is under the chief minister himself. There are growing concerns among civil society as Christians and Muslims are being attacked more,” said activist SQ Masood from the Old City of Hyderabad.

A Congress leader who did not want to be named however said that the state elections in Maharashtra also had a role to play in communal incidents in Telangana. “In Jainoor, a lot of the accused are from Maharashtra. And similarly, the Muslim man who desecrated the temple in Secunderabad is from Bombay. Vested interests are trying to cause trouble here and spoilt the name of the Congress,” he asserted.

Hyderabad company busted for issuing fake education, job certificates

Hyderabad: Kodagu police faced a setback in their investigation into the murder of a Hyderabad-based businessman after one of the accused, Ankur Rana, escaped from custody while re-visiting the original crime scene in Uppal.

Initially, a team of 13 officers from Kodagu took the accused to Bengaluru to visit the crime scene before travelling to Telangana on October 29. Then they visited Uppal in Bhvanagiri, where the victim was allegedly killed. After staying overnight in a hotel near Uppal, the police discovered that the accused had escaped around 3 am on October 31.

Since then, senior officers from Kodagu have collaborated with Telangana police to locate him.

Last week a 29-year-old woman and two accomplices were arrested by Kodagu police in Karnataka for allegedly murdering a Hyderabad-based businessman to acquire a land deal worth Rs 8 crore.

The accused has been identified as Niharika, along with her friends Ankul Rana from Haryana and Nikhil from Bengaluru.

According to reports, on October 8, coffee plantation workers discovered the charred body of an unidentified man who had been strangled.

After cross-referencing reports of missing persons in nearby districts, the deceased was identified as Ramesh Kumar a Hyderabad-based businessman. Subsequently, the accused were arrested.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Niharika who was married to Kumar allegedly devised a plan to kill him to obtain the property deal. She invited Ankul Rana to Hyderabad and on October 3 Niharika traveled along with the victim in his car and Ankul Rana accompanied them.

Near Uppal the accused allegedly murdered the victim after which they transported his body to Horamavu in Bengaluru. There, they recruited Nikhil and subsequently moved the body to the coffee estate where it was set on fire.

Hyderabad: Ayesha Siddiqui, the prime organizer of a brothel who was caught during a raid by the Commissioner’s Task Force (central) team, tried to cover up her illegal activities under the garb of the marriage bureau.

A police official who led the raid said they had received a tip-off about a brothel house run from a small house in a slum at Khairatabad. At first, the police were confused as a marriage bureau signboard was put up on the house.

After keeping an eye on the house, the police then planned and raided it. The police found that Ayesha was using the marriage bureau office signboard to confuse the law enforcement agencies.

“Ayesha was luring the women who were in distress into prostitution and earning money at the cost of the hardship of the victims. Four victims were rescued,” said the official of the Task Force. The police are verifying whether Ayesha is involved in similar other cases.

The Task Force on Saturday had raided a brothel house operated from a house at Khairatabad and caught four customers.

“Ayesha, was charging between Rs. 600 to Rs. 1000 from each customer and sharing the amount on commission basis with the victims. She was contacting the customers through social media and directly over the phone,” said the police.

Suicides among low-ranking cops raise concern in Telangana

Telangana Police department

Hyderabad: Suicides among policemen is seemingly on the rise in Telangana. The death of Kankuri Ravishankar, on Saturday, November 2, is the fourth suicide by a Telangana police personnel in just two months.

A female officer had also attempted her own life and was rescued by her colleagues, making the total count of attempts of suicide by Telangana’s police officers to five, with four losing their lives.

A few of the incidents point towards financial difficulties and related family problems, raising concerns about lack of financial security, even after being in a ‘government job’, that is conventionally associated with job security and settled life.

Meanwhile, other recent incidents of suicide by a constable and an attempt of suicide by a female officer point towards even more serious issues like scapegoating and workplace harassment from senior officers.

The Telangana police officers also reportedly faces dire working conditions, that may lead to bigger problems for the state’s law enforcement if not addressed in an immediate away. The home ministry is headed by chief minister Revanth Reddy.

4 Police suicides within two months

On October 13, G Srinivas, a head constable of the armed reserve (AR) police shot himself to death with his SLR service rifle, at Mahahabubad collectorate. The suicide was committed over family disputes, according to police. The incident of his shooting himself was caught in CCTV footage.

On the same day which head constable G Srinivas took his life, in a separate incident, Bhukya Sagar, a police constable at Burgampahad police station poisoned himself to death, after capturing his death note in video, as addressed to his wife.

In the video, the deceased police officer, who was on suspension at the time of his attempt on life, alleged his senior officers to be the reason for his suspension. Sagar held two police sub-inspectors (SIs) of the police station accountable, for an alleged loss of seized contraband from the police station, for which he was allegedly scapegoated and was suspended from the service, Telangana Today reported.

In an earlier incident that took place on September 8, Narasimha Raju, a traffic constable working for Hyderabad city police, in the Gopalapuram police station, took his life by jumping in front of a moving train at Ghatkesar. He too, reportedly died of financial difficulties in the family, according to local reports.

Another incident of a female officer, on October 9, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police, attempted suicide inside the Chilpiched police station in Medak district, in her workplace. Before attempting to end her life by hanging using her shawl, the female officer had written a suicide note accusing her senior officer and the sub-inspector of the police station, Yadagiri, of personally targeting and harassing her for a substantial time.

Lower-ranked officers work under unfavourable conditions

A visible pattern in the recent police suicides is that the victims are mostly lower-ranked police officers, who work in increasingly unfavourable conditions. Siasat.com spoke to a police officer over the concerns of the officers working on the ground, and the recent suicides among police officers in the state.

The traffic police officer who didn’t wish to be named, said that they have to work 7 days a week without a set weekoff on rotational shifts. The job risks their personal wellbeing of having a set routine, affecting their mental and personal health.

The officer told Siasat.com that the police officers who work to serve the public on the ground are deprived of multiple allowances including dearness allowance (DA). Though the government announced a new DA for Deepawali, the pending DAs are not paid, said the officer.

“The Telangana state police is working on an old police manual that predates independence, which has not been rewritten even after Telangana was formed,” said the police officer. He highlighted the need of mordernising the state police manual, which works as the constitution for the police force. “Even the country’s penal code has been updated with additions to modern day standards, why is the police manual stuck in the past?”, he asked.

He expressed his despair and a state of hopelessness by saying, “even if you (journalists) write 100 stories about the plight of the police officers of Telangana state, the plight of the police officers will not change.”

Telangana looking at ‘disillusionment’ among police force

The recent incidents of increase in suicides and protesting police personnel show a serious need for the home ministry of the state, headed by chief minister Revanth Reddy, to address their concerns, and provide necessary help.

The incident of communal unrest in Secunderabad, a few kilometres away from the multi-crore state Secretariat stands as a telling example of the the role of the state police in maintaining peace in challenging situations.

Last week, police constables resorted to staging protests, demanding better working conditions, while facing the risks of suspension or dismissal from the government service for which they have written and passed various PSC exams.

The recent protests by the police constables, who were joined by their wives and family members demanding better treatment, off days, and other concerns were dealt by the state government by dismissing 10 police personnel and suspending 29 other officers.

Asaduddin Owaisi, BR Naidu in war of words over Waqf Board, TTD

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi makes certain suggestions to issue food security cards and health cards, for the cabinet sub-committee constituted to work out its modalities.

Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi and chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) BR Naidu indulged in a war of words on Sunday, November 4, criticising each other over remarks on the TTD and Waqf Board.

On November 3, Naidu took a dig at Owaisi for comparing the TTD with the Waqf board. “The Waqf board is a real estate company. How can a senior politician like him (Owaisi) compare it to TTD? I condemn his statement,” the TTD chairman remarked.

Naidu’s remarks come a day after Owaisi criticised his proposal to employ only Hindus as TTD staff members. Following his appointment, the TTD chairman stated that only Hindus should be employed within the temple precincts amid the controversy over adulterated ghee used in Tirupati temple.

In response to the TTD chairman’s remark, the AIMIM chief took to X and said, “Andhra Pradesh Charitable & Hindu Religious Institutions & Endowments Act 1987 controls around 4 Lakh Acres of Land.”

Owaisi further said that Telangana Charitable & Hindu Religious Institution & Endowments Act 1987, controls 87,235 Acres of Endowment (Temple) land as reported by CAG Report for the year ended March 2018.

“Odisha has the same 1951 Act. CAG report looked at a sample of 13 religious institutions. The report found the total landed property under these 13 Hindu religious institutions to be 12,767.67 acres.
Tamil Nadu has TNHR&CE Act 1959 as per the policy note published by the government of Tamil Nadu the total land under TNHR& CE was 4.78 lakh acres in 2022. The Hindu Endowment Boards control over 10 lakh acres in these four states,” the Hyderabad MP explained.

Owaisi added that the list doesn’t name states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, which all have huge religious institutions. Owaisi remarked that the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are spreading false information regarding the Waqf board.

The Hyderabad MP further reiterated that a non-Hindu cannot become a member of the Hindu Endowment Boards, even the commissioner or advisor cannot be from the minority.

Asaduddin Owaisi reacts to BR Naidu’s TTD staff remark

The duo began a war of words after BR Naidu proposed that all staff on the TTD should be from the Hindu community after taking charge on October 30.

Responding to the same, the AIMIM president on Friday, November 1 said, “The TTD chairman wants only Hindus as staff in Tirumala. However, the Modi government wants to make it mandatory for there to be non-Muslims in Waqf boards and Waqf council.”

The Hyderabad MP further added, “Most Hindu Endowment laws insist that only Hindus should be its members. What is good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?”

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA T Harish Rao on Monday, November 4 condemned the arrest of sarpanches who protested over pending bills.

Rao said that it was wrong to detain the sarpanchs who came to Hyderabad to meet Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy and submit a representation. He alleged that the Congress government is arresting the sarpanches to collect debts, sell properties, take away the assets belonging to the family and give the funds meant for the development of the village.

The Siddipet MLA further took a dig at the Telangana government and asked, “Does Praja Palana mean arresting sarpanches who have served at the rural level?”

He further questioned the government when it can pay the bills to big contractors and why is there a delay in payment of bills to the sarpanches.

The former Telangana health minister urged the state government on behalf of the BRS to immediately release the illegally detained and arrested ex-sarpanches and pay the pending bills at the earliest.

Delhi HC tribunal confirms ban imposed on J-K Jamaat-e-Islami

Hyderabad: Ola Electric has been ordered by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission to pay Rs 1.73 lakh to Hyderabad resident K. Sunil Chowdary, following a complaint about negligence related to a defective battery in his electric scooter.

The compensation includes a refund of Rs.1.63 lakh for the vehicle, plus an additional Rs.10,000 for the mental distress caused. The refund will also accrue 12 percent interest, starting from August 2023. Chowdary purchased the Ola S1 Pro electric scooter in June for Rs.1.63 lakh, which included a warranty of Rs.6,299.

From the outset, Chowdary reported issues with the battery charger, which was not functional. Although Ola took 10 days to replace it, the charger continued to malfunction. Despite Hyderabad resident Chowdary’s repeated complaints, Ola failed to resolve the issue. In August, the company collected the vehicle for service but did not respond or follow up thereafter.

The Commission noted that Ola Electric did not respond to multiple notices and failed to defend its case. Consequently, the Commission upheld Chowdary’s claims, deeming them unchallenged and validated by the lack of rebuttal from the company.

Hyderabad: Two out of the 60 students from Wankidi tribal welfare school in Asifabad who were admitted to a government hospital due to food poisoning are critical and have been shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad.

The incident occurred on October 31 following which the students were shifted to the government hospital. The two students, Jyothika of Class 7 and Mahalaxmi of Class 6 were taken to a private hospital in Mancherial after their condition worsened.

As their condition further deteriorated, the doctors referred them to NIMS hospital in Hyderabad. Based on their instructions, the district deputy director of the Tribal Welfare department shifted them to Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, student leaders of several tribal bodies demanded the suspension of officials concerned over their alleged negligence in providing quality food and water to the students. Several food poisoning cases are being reported in residential schools across the erstwhile Kumurambheem Asifabad district, they alleged.

On Sunday, former Telangana health minister T Harish Rao criticised the Telangana government over alleged negligence of the health care system in the state. Rao claimed that the 60 students who fell ill were crammed into a room and were made to lie next to each other with their hands overlapping.
