Months after losing power, KCR’s family hit by multiple corruption cases

Telangana: Telugu textbooks carry KCR's name, Congress govt embarrassed

Hyderabad: Two months ago a senior Minister in Telangana had predicted political fireworks before Diwali. This did not happen, prompting the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to ridicule the ruling Congress party over its ’empty threat’.

Two months later, the state seems to be witnessing the promised fireworks with both the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Enforcement Directorate proceeding against BRS Working President and former Telangana Minister K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) for alleged irregularities in the conduct of the Formula-E car race in Hyderabad last year when BRS was in power.

Governor grants permission to prosecute KTR

With Governor Jishnu Dev Varma granting permission for the prosecution of K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), the ACB moved swiftly to book a case against the former Minister.

The ACB registered the First Information Report (FIR) under Sections 13(1)(A) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with Sections 409 and 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code, naming KTR as the accused number one.

Senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) former chief engineer BLN Reddy were named as accused number two and three respectively. The anti-graft agency has also recorded the statement of M. Dana Kishore, Principal Secretary, of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, on whose complaint the case was booked.

The move was apparently aimed at preparing the ground for issuing notices to the accused. The allegations centre around the payment of more than Rs 54.88 crore to UK-based Formula-E Operations Limited (FEO) and others in gross violation of established procedures.

KTR denies allegations

Denying the allegation of corruption, KTR maintained that the Formula-E race was organised to make Telangana the hub of electric vehicles.

Terming the case a political vendetta, the BRS leader dared the ruling Congress government to have a debate on the issue in the Assembly.

It tried to stall the proceedings during the recent Winter session to press the demand for a debate. However, the Congress government argued that an issue which is under investigation can’t be debated in the House.

KTR, who had earlier declared that he was ready to go to jail, approached the High Court, seeking orders to quash the FIR.

He argues that when FEO confirmed that it received the money, where was the corruption? The BRS leader received some relief as the High Court barred ACB from arresting him by the end of the current month.

ED registers case against KTR

After the FIR was booked by the ACB, the ED was also quick to enter the scene by registering an Enforcement Case Information Report under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against KTR, Arvind Kumar and BLN Reddy.

The central agency has now asked to appear before it on January 7, while Arvind Kumar and BLN Reddy have been directed to appear on January 2 and 3, respectively.

The ED has also initiated a parallel investigation under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) to examine possible violations.

As per the original agreement, the government’s role was limited to providing infrastructure and civic amenities for the race.

There are allegations that HMDA transferred funds despite not being a direct party to the agreement.

The ED is also probing whether financial commitments exceeding Rs 600 crore for upcoming seasons violated legal and financial protocols.

While rejecting the demand for a debate in the Assembly, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy claimed that his government saved more than Rs 500 crore by refusing to transfer further money for the Formula-E car race after the previous BRS government had transferred about Rs 55 crore to a foreign company in alleged violation of rules.

On KTR releasing to media the photographs of Revanth Reddy’s meeting with Formula E Operations (FEO) co-founder Albert Longo, the Chief Minister said three to four days after he assumed office in December last year, FEO representatives met him.

“They told me that they had an agreement with KTR for Rs 600 crore and wanted the government to conduct the race again and release the remaining money. I refused to do so. Why should the government spend Rs 600 crore to conduct a car race,” he asked and alleged that KTR had planned to loot the money in the name of the Formula-E race.

This is the first corruption case booked against the family of BRS supremo and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) after Congress came to power a year ago.

ED case against Kavitha

Incidentally, the case booked by ED is the second against the family of KCR. His daughter and BRS MLC K. Kavitha was arrested by the ED in March in the Delhi excise policy case.

While she was in judicial custody in the case booked by the ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also got the court’s approval to arrest her. Kavitha, also a former MP, was released from Tihar Jail after more than five months when the Supreme Court granted her bail.

Kaleshwaram enquiry into Harish Rao’s role

After KCR’s daughter Kavitha, son KTR, the BRS Chief himself, and his nephew and former State Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao appear to be on the radar of the Congress government.

Their role in alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project may come under the scanner of the Justice Ghose Commission investigating the case.

The Commission, which is in the final stage of its probe, is likely to summon them to record their statements regarding allegations of cost escalation in the project and poor maintenance of the three barrages that suffered damages due to inadequate operational protocols.

The Commission was originally expected to submit its report to the government by the end of its term on December 31, but the final report is now likely by late January or February.

A few weeks after assuming office, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had ordered two judicial inquiries — one into the alleged irregularities in the execution of Kaleshwaram and the second into Bhadradri and Yadadri thermal power projects and power purchase agreement with the Chhattisgarh government.

The Commission of Inquiry headed by former Supreme Court judge M.B. Lokur, which probed thermal power plants and power purchase agreements, submitted the report in October.

The Commission’s report is yet to be made public but understood to have faulted the previous government and the decision-makers in its report both on the execution of the two power projects and the power purchase agreement.

“There were many scams during the previous regime. There were allegations of phone tapping, misuse of Dharani portal, Kaleshwaram and 4-5 other scams,” State Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy had said while predicting political fireworks.

“Whether those involved should be arrested or sent to life imprisonment or the money should be recovered from them are all issues which courts will decide,” he added.

Single parent can apply for minor child’s passport alone: Telangana HC

Saudi: Indian passport service portal to shut down for 3 days

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court recently ruled that a single parent with custody of a minor child can apply for and obtain a passport for the child without requiring the signature or consent of the other parent.

This decision was made by Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya while addressing a petition filed on behalf of a four-year-old girl, represented by her mother.

Court sets Hyderabad RPO’s mandate aside

or obtains court permission to proceed with the passport application.

Justice Bhattacharya emphasized that imposing such a requirement on the mother was unnecessary, especially since the father had deserted the family and moved to the United States, relinquishing his Indian citizenship.

He did not contest the mother’s petition, and there is an ongoing divorce case in Hyderabad where he has not sought custody of the child.

The ruling clarified that both the Passport Act of 1967 and the 1980 Passport Rules explicitly allow a single parent with exclusive custody to apply for a passport for their minor child without needing consent from the other parent.

This provision applies even if the parents are separated but not formally divorced. The only requirement is that the custodial parent must provide the necessary information in the designated annexure.

Hyderabad air quality dips as pollution levels spike

Hyderabad: The residents of Hyderabad need to brace for foggy mornings as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts fog or mist conditions to prevail in the city until January 1.

Apart from the foggy weather, the IMD has also predicted partly cloudy skies during this period.

The minimum temperature in Hyderabad recently dropped to 16.3 degrees Celsius which was recorded at the University of Hyderabad. The lowest minimum temperature in the state, 12.9 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Rangareddy district.

Precautionary measures amid IMD Hyderabad forecasts about fog

As foggy conditions can significantly reduce visibility, commuters will face risks.

Here are some essential tips to ensure safety:

  • Drive slowly: Reduced visibility calls for slower driving speeds.
  • Use fog lights and low beams: Avoid high beams, as they can reflect off the fog and impair visibility.
  • Stick to known routes: Familiar roads can help minimize confusion in low-visibility conditions.
  • Maintain safe distances: Ensure ample space between vehicles to allow for instant stops.

Despite taking these precautions, accidents remain a possibility in dense fog. It is advisable to avoid travel during heavy fog whenever possible.

Chilly weather

With the IMD forecasts indicating fog and low temperatures, Hyderabad residents should prepare for colder mornings and reduced visibility.

As Hyderabad ushers in the new year under a blanket of fog, it is important to take precautionary measures and stay updated with the weather.

'Don't generalise' Telangana DGP reacts to suicides by police personnel

Hyderabad: Telangana director general of police (DGP) Dr Jitendra on Sunday, December 29, remarked on rising suicides by police personnel saying there may be several reasons for the suicides. He did not agree that work pressure was the reason for the suicides.

“There may be several issues like financial issues, family issues, emotional issues, and personal issues. I cannot say this is happening because of one issue. We can’t generalise that it is because of work pressure. There may also be some cases of work pressure. I am not saying no,” Dr Jitender said while addressing the media at the Telangana police headquarters in Hyderabad.

He also added that an internal mechanism exists in Telangana police to address work-related issues of police personnel. The department has officers who counsel employees having family, emotional, and financial issues. “If we are unable to handle the issue at the department level, we take the help of professional counsellors,” he said.

He reiterated that the Telangana police department is equipped to respond to employee issues.

Two constables die by suicide in Telangana

The DGP’s statement comes amid an increasing number of suicides by Telangana police officials.

On Sunday, a 52-year-old head constable Sai Kumar was found hanging from a tree in the Kulcharam police station in Medak district.

It is said that Kumar had a sip of tea before taking the extreme step. His body was shifted to the government hospital in Medak for postmortem.

In Siddipet, on December 27, a 38-year-old constable, Pandari Balakrishna, who served in the Telangana special police (TGSP) died by suicide after he hanged himself to death in his house.

Before taking his life, he and his wife poisoned their little children – Yashwant, 11, and Ashrith, 9. The wife also consumed the poison.

While Balakrishna died, his wife and children were rushed to the hospital by neighbours. They are currently under treatment.

The reasons for his extreme step have yet to be ascertained. The Siddipet police are probing the incident.

Balakrishna served in the 17th Battalion in Sircila.

In November this year, a 42-year-old traffic police constable died by suicide in Nalgonda.

The deceased police officer was identified as Kankuri Ravishankar, a native of Cheruvugattu village of Narketpally mandal.

He is survived by his wife Swathi, who works as an RTC bus conductor, his mother and Venkatamma and two children.

Ravishankar has been working at the Yadadri district headquarters and had come home for Deepavali leave on October 30.

Hyderabad: Tight police checks to be conducted on New Year's Eve

Hyderabad: To deter youth from immoral activities, drugs and spending lavishly on New Year events, Muslim organizations are offering more meaningful means to help avoid the New Year bashes.

Muslims organizations are holding special programs on the night of December 31 to engage the youngsters in prayers and religious discourses instead of corrupting themselves with the worldly New Year revelries culture.

The Abul Fida Islamic Research Center in Shahalibanda is organizing a night-long program called ‘Shab Bedari & Tarbiyati Ijtema’ at the Masjid S S Faizullah Hussaini in Shakarganj. The program, scheduled from 10 pm to 7.30 am the next morning, includes religious scholars delivering sermons on Islamic teachings, and participants can join congregational prayers such as ‘Salatul Tasbeeh,’ ‘Salatul Tahajjud,’ ‘Fajr,’ and ‘Ishraq’ namaz.

The Al Madina Educational Society in Falaknuma is hosting a ‘Mehfil Durood’ at Ghazi Millat Colony from 8 pm to 1.30 am, providing an opportunity for youth to participate.

At Vazir Ali Mosque, Fateh Darwaza, a religious program is organized on Tuesday night (December 31 night). A program will be organized at Charminar by the Meher Organization on similar lines.

Several other groups are holding such programs at Mehdipatnam, Borabanda, Kandikalgate, Barkas, Falaknuma and other places in the city.

Organizers expressed concern about New Year parties taking place on December 31 night in Hyderabad, where Muslim youth engage in haram activities. They aim to prevent such behavior by organizing religious events and keeping youth away from parties.

Religious scholars have called on community organizations to organize religious meetings in colonies and mosques to spread the correct message and deter youth from deviating from the right path.

The conviction rate in NDPS cases almost doubled this year in Telangana with 102 people sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for drug trafficking.

To curb and monitor drug and substance abuse in the state, TGNAB will form 19 additional special teams consisting of officers from departments of Prohibition and Excise, local police and TGNAB. While two of the 19 teams will carry out a mouth swab drug test, the remaining will be equipped with ABON (urine kit).

The ABON (urine kit) detects six commonly abused drugs, including opioids, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine, providing comprehensive screening capabilities.

The teams will visit pubs, bars, hotels and resorts where New Year events are scheduled. Sniffer dogs will be up into service to identify drugs concealed in cars, parking places, escalators and other places.

The bureau had already issued guidelines to the local law enforcement agencies to ensure the management of pubs, bars and other recreational places submit the details of the music band members and DJs.

engineering colleges in Telangana

Hyderabad: Hyderabad won’t get any new engineering colleges in the upcoming academic year 2025-26.

The reason behind this is the government’s alleged directive to universities not to issue any new permissions.

Concentration of engineering colleges in Hyderabad

With the aim of preventing migration to Hyderabad, the government has decided to encourage the establishment of colleges in other districts.

According to a report published in TOI, the government decided to stop the establishment of new engineering colleges not only in the city but also in Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.

Apart from restrictions on new engineering colleges, the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) required for autonomous status has been put on hold.

No colleges in many districts

In Telangana, there are 175 engineering colleges offering courses to over one lakh students, and around 60 percent of them are concentrated in Greater Hyderabad.

The capital city of the state alone has 20 engineering colleges.

On the other hand, there are no engineering colleges in certain districts, including Adilabad, Nirmal, and Mulugu.

In view of the concentration of engineering colleges in Hyderabad, the government aims to encourage the establishment of engineering colleges in other districts to prevent migration to the city.
