Telangana in 2024: HYDRAA, Caste census, Allu Arjun’s arrest

$

0

Hyderabad: The first Congress government in Telangana kicked off the implementation of its poll promises, including the path-breaking caste census, during 2024, but its ambitious projects of Musi river redevelopment and development of a ‘future-ready city’ on Hyderabad outskirts would not be easy as they require massive funds, besides posing other challenges in execution.

The Telugu film industry whose fame soared following the success of mega films like ‘RRR’ came under pressure at home during the year in the aftermath of the ‘Pushpa-2’ stampede on December 4, where a woman was killed and her son seriously injured.

At a meeting with Telugu cinema industry representatives post the Allu Arjun episode, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy made it clear law and order was supreme and that the movie world was no exception to it.

6 guarantees

The Congress government which assumed power last year, began implementation of the party’s poll promises and ‘guarantees’, including Rs 21,000 crore crop loan waiver, besides the caste survey.

The “historic” comprehensive socio-economic, employment, political and caste survey, an election promise of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, got underway on November 6.

Facing flak for not implementing the promise of ‘Rythu Bhrosa’ investment support (Rs 15,000) to farmers and tenant farmers, Reddy has announced it would be implemented after ‘Sankranti’ festival in January 2025.

Musi redevelopment, HYDRAA demolitions

In 2024, the state government unveiled ambitious plans to redevelop the highly polluted Musi River that flows through Hyderabad and to establish “India’s most modern future-ready city” on the outskirts of the state capital.

However, the grand plans for the redevelopment of Musi, coupled with the anti-encroachment drive initiated by the newly-formed Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), drew sharp criticism from the BRS and BJP.

The two opposition parties alleged that the Musi rejuvenation programme reeks of corruption, also charging that HYDRAA is demolishing poor people’s houses built along the riverbank.

Undeterred, Reddy highlighted the need to check the toxic pollution in Musi and asserted that the redevelopment would be carried out in a way that is comparable to Sabarmati in Gujarat, the Thames in London and the Centre’s programme to clean up river Ganga.

He had earlier said the government appointed a consortium of five renowned companies who will prepare project reports, covering various aspects, including the “city’s growth on par with world standards”, Musi rejuvenation and generation of funds for project implementation.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be submitted in 18 months, he said.

The government is reportedly seeking funds from the World Bank for the project. “It is being opposed by all. Both Left and Right,” noted analyst Telakapalli Ravi said.

Regarding the proposed new city on the outskirts of here, the challenge is to attract major companies and other players set up shop there and execute the project smoothly.

However, the state finances are in dire straits, Ravi pointed out.

According to the CAG report on state accounts of November, 2024, the state’s revenue receipts was over Rs 1,03,300 crore, while the Budget estimates for 2024-25 was Rs 2,21,242 which is only 46.69 percent.

Lok Sabha polls

This year, the ruling party had reasons to cheer as the Congress won eight of the total 17 seats in the state in the Lok Sabha polls.

BJP won eight seats, while AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi retained his Hyderabad constituency.

The K Chandrasekhar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) suffered the most as it drew a blank in the parliament elections. This came as further shock to the regional party as it faced an unexpected defeat in the 2023 Assembly polls.

It suffered other setbacks too.

While Rao’s daughter and MLC K Kavitha was arrested in March in the Delhi excise policy case (though she secured bail later), the Congress government ordered inquiries into the alleged irregularities during the BRS regime over the Kaleshwaram project and the Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs).

Rao’s son and BRS Working President KT Rama Rao was booked by the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) over the conduct of Formula-E race in Hyderabad.

He has also been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning on January 7, 2025 over the matter.

Unfazed, BRS adopted an aggressive stance against the Congress government on various issues. The flashpoint between the two came in November when government officials were attacked at a village during a public hearing for land acquisition.

The village is in the Kodangal assembly constituency represented by the CM. BRS’ Patnam Narender Reddy was arrested in connection with the attack among others.

The government, however, withdrew the land acquisition process for establishing a ‘pharma village’ in two villages there and announced plans to set up a multipurpose industrial park.

Telangana Thalli statue

The unveiling of the official design of ‘Telangana Thalli’ (Mother Telangana) by the Congress government, different from the one being used by BRS, also came under intense attack from the regional party.

Away from the world of politics, the premiere show of top actor Allu Arjun-starrer ‘Pushpa-2’ turned tragic on December 4.

Dramatic events unfolded soon after the stampede as Allu Arjun was arrested and lodged in prison but got relief when the High Court granted him interim bail, all in less than 24 hours.

Victim girl standing in the rubbles of HYDRAA Demolition near Khajaguda Lake of Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A team of Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), Serilingampally revenue and GHMC officials conducted a demolition drive in the full tank level (FTL) limits and buffer zone areas of the Khajaguda lake on Tuesday morning, December 31.

About 20 illegal structures, including shops were razed down amid tight security and police bandobast. According to the officials, the structures stood on a two-acre area of land near the FTL limits of the Khajaguda lake resulting in blockage of natural flow of flood water into it. It comes under the Nanakramguda village of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

The action followed after HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath conducted a field inspection on December 23 in Tautanikunta and Bhagirathamma lakes near Nanakramguda, and Neknampur lake in Narsingi regions.

Meanwhile, locals complained they were given only a 24-hour notice which was insufficient to move their stuff.

HYDRAA chief AV Ranganath had recently claimed that since its inception, the agency has been able to reclaim 200 acres of government-owned land from encroachments and illegal constructions, and was able to rejuvenate 8 major lakes and 12 parks in the city.

HYDRAA officials reportedly use rural maps, Survey of India maps and data from the National Remote Sensing Agency to determine the floodwater flow channels into the lakes, and remove the illegal constructions that cause blockage.

Goshamahal BJP candidate Raja Singh said that AIMIM is struggling to identify strong leaders to contest against him.

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Goshamahal constituency T Raja Singh, on Tuesday, December 31, asked the Hindu community not to participate in New Year celebrations in Hyderabad as it was not in accordance with Hindu customs and calendar.

“It is a big conspiracy hatched by western countries. We are falling into the trap and also forcing it on the next generations,” said Raja Singh.

The BJP MLA said every year, he has been observing a trend among Hindu youth who turn to pubs, bars and resorts to welcome the new year.

“January 1 is the new year for Christians and not for Sanathanis (Hindus). I don’t know why people are welcoming the new year in other communities. Our New Year begins from Ugadi festival and chaitra shukla pratipada,” said Raja Singh.

He advised the Hindu youth to focus on protecting the Hindu Dharma. “Instead of speeding and dying on the road while celebrating New Year, youngsters should sacrifice their lives for Hindu dharma and ‘Love Jihad’,” the MLA said.

Winter Delights: Harees draws crowds to Barkas eateries in Hyderabad

Harees in Hyderabad

A wintry morning is a time when many love to visit Barkas in the southern corner of Hyderabad. The top reason is the ‘harees’, a delicacy similar to the mouth-watering haleem, and available at a few small eateries in Hyderabad’s famous Barkas Bazaar.

Barkas is the corrupted form of the Barracks housing Yemeni soldiers of the Nizam Army. During the Nizam era, the Yemeni soldiers were accommodated here, hence the word Barracks and its popular corrupted form Barkas.

The eateries in Hyderabad serving traditional food are now making a quick buck selling Harees to the crowds. It is prepared with mutton or beef and prepared at three hotels in Barkas. It is prepared with spices but the sweet version is also available and a big hit among the visitors who frequent the locality.

Qaisar Bin Abdullah, owner of Hadrami Harees Hotel in Hyderabad who specialises in this dish and conducted business for 50 years in the Barkas Bazaar says that winter sees a lot of rush for it.

“Harees is well known for their unique taste and are quite nutritious too. We add a lot of pure ghee and dry fruits. People prefer it more in the winter season as it is supposed to be a warm food”, he told Siasat.com.

People from across Hyderabad visit the hotel in the morning to eat the delicious Harees. “It is only sold for about four hours in the morning. By 9 am, we wind up the business,” said Abdullah.

Initially, the Harees was a hit among only locals. As it gained immense praise for its taste, people from far-off places across Hyderabad frequent the restaurants. Another hotelier, Abdullah bin Haftoor explained that it is boneless. “Only quality meat is used. The process of preparing this is more or less similar to haleem and spices are almost the same”, he said.

In Hyderabad, Harees is available in two variants, one is sweet and the other is spicy. For the sweet harees variant, a couple of spoons of sugar are topped on the plate and folded into the harees. The regular spicy variety has dollops of pure ghee.

Telangana HC strikes down GO reserving PG medical seats for locals

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court expressed strong disapproval of HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath’s actions regarding the demolition of properties in Khajaguda, which were claimed to be situated in the Full Tank Level (FTL) area of Thavutoni (Bhagirathamma) Kunta.

The court warned that it might summon Ranganath again due to his haste in ordering evictions without proper notice or hearings for the affected property owners.

This warning came during a hearing of a lunch motion petition filed by Mekala Anjaiah and two others, who assert ownership of a 6.2-acre land parcel in the area.

Justice K Lakshman questioned the urgency behind demanding that landowners vacate their properties within 24 hours, emphasizing the lack of due process.

He stated, “What is the hurry in asking the owners to vacate the place… without a proper notice and without hearing the owners?”

The court also stayed eviction orders issued by HYDRAA on December 30 and directed that proper procedures be followed moving forward.

During the proceedings, the court sought clarification on how authorities determined that the property fell within the FTL of the water body, asking for documentation to support their claims.

The judge highlighted that no final notification marking the FTL had been presented and questioned whether any notices had been served to the petitioners regarding this matter.

Telangana: TSRTC announces 21% pay hike to employees from June 1

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has announced the introduction of 799 new electric buses by March 2025 as part of its commitment to enhancing public transportation and reducing pollution.

Transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed that 353 of these buses will be allocated for Hyderabad, while the remaining 446 will serve various districts including Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Nizamabad.

This action is aimed at modernizing the state’s public transport system and promoting the use of eco-friendly vehicles.

In addition to the electric buses, the government has implemented several reforms to support this transition. Notably, it has waived registration fees and road taxes for electric vehicles, encouraging citizens to adopt greener transportation options.

The announcement aligns with the state’s broader goal of registering 500,000 electric vehicles annually in Greater Hyderabad to combat pollution effectively.

The introduction of these electric buses is part of a larger plan that includes setting up charging stations across key locations in the state.

These stations will facilitate the efficient operation of electric buses, which are expected to replace older diesel models on high-traffic routes.

Currently, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) operates around 100 electric buses, with plans for further expansion.
