After Biryani, Pakistani Nihari heats up food scene in Hyderabad

After biryani, Pakistani nihari trends in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has long been celebrated for its rich culinary heritage, giving the world some iconic gems like haleem, dum biryani, and Irani chai. Steeped in history and flavour, the city’s cuisine has a special place in all locals’ hearts. However, in recent times, there’s been a growing openness among Hyderabadis to embrace and share this culinary space with a variety of global flavours. Hyderabadi food lovers are no longer confined to traditional cuisine, thus making room for dishes from across borders and cultures. One such dish that is currently trending in the city’s breakfast scene is Pakistani nihari by Kebabzadeh

This rising interest in Pakistani Nihari comes on the heels of Teri Meri Biryani’s Pakistani Biryani, which took the city by storm just a few months ago, sparking a wave of curiosity for Pakistani flavours.

What makes Pakistani nihari stand out in Hyderabad?

For just Rs. 180, Kebabzadeh is offering a steaming bowl of authentic Pakistani nihari as a special feature on their breakfast menu, capturing the attention of food lovers across the city. While nihari is a beloved dish in Hyderabad, the version served at Kebabzadeh offers a distinctive twist that sets it apart from its Hyderabadi counterpart.

The key difference lies in the flavour profile and spice mix. Hyderabadi nihari’s taste comes from the potli ka masala which includes bay leaves, coriander seeds, cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, and more. This gives Hyderabadi nihari a mild flavour, making the meat stand out as the star. Pakistani nihari, on the other, hand, uses nihari masala which includes cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, fennel, ginger, nutmeg, and pepper. It tends to be more deeply infused with these spices, creating a depth of flavour that is spicy.

Both versions, however, offer a delicious, hearty meal that’s perfect for a breakfast feast.

Will the dish hold its own?

As the food scene in Hyderabad continues to evolve, one of the questions that arises is whether Pakistani nihari will carve out a lasting place in the city’s rich culinary landscape. While we do not know the answer to that, it’s undeniable that the dish is part of a larger movement towards embracing cross-border cuisines in Hyderabad. What is clear is that the future of Hyderabad’s food culture looks promising, with a fusion of flavours and ingredients from all corners of the world.

AIMIM stirs row on missing Urdu sign on Amberpet flyover; Goondaism, says Raja Singh

Amberpet flyover

Hyderabad: The controversy that erupted over missing Urdu language on the horizontal direction board erected on the Amberpet flyover took a new turn with BJP Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh targeting the All India Majlis E Ittehad Ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party on Monday, January 20, alleging that it was ‘goondaism’.

On Sunday, the AIMIM party local leaders had the direction board removed from the Amberpet flyover as the authorities failed to mention the names of areas in Urdu. The names were written only in Telugu and English to which they took objection. It is pertinent to note that Urdu is the second official language of Telangana.

The issue was escalated to AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi who spoke to the officials concerned and they assured to rectify it.

T Raja Singh took objection to Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi interfering in the affairs of the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency. “It comes under the Secunderabad parliamentary constituency and G Kishan Reddy is the MP there. It is not proper for the officials to budge to the threats of Asaduddin Owaisi and remove the board on the Amberpet flyover,” he lamented.

He recalled that chief minister A Revanth Reddy inaugurated the Aramgarh flyover constructed at a cost of Rs 8 crore where AIMIM party workers put all party flags on it. “The flyover was constructed with public funds. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy will soon realize where he is heading. Both the brothers will sit on his head and dance,” he said. Raja Singh said that soon the BJP will come to power in the state and teach AIMIM a fitting lesson.

6.68L families in Telangana eligible for New ration cards

Hyderabad: The Association for Socio-Economic Empowerment for the Marginalised (ASEEM), a Hyderabad-based NGO, on Monday, January 20, submitted a representation to the Telangana government, with its suggestions over the issuing of new ration cards in the state and using caste survey and old ration card applications’ data, among others.

The letter was addressed to chief minister Revanth Reddy, civil supplies minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, and top civil servants of the state. It stated that the government’s decision to issue new ration cards through the data collected by Mee Seva app from 2018 might not be a feasible option as many residents would have changed their address. Instead, it suggested using information from the caste survey statistical data.

“Provide applicants with a window where they can re-apply or update and make corrections to their ration card applications,” ASEEM said.

Ensure transparency

ASEEM appealed for a transparent process by publishing all relevant information, government orders, memos, and notifications on the civil supplies department website.

“Introduce a system to let applicants check the status of their ration card application (old or new), using their Aadhaar card details before applying. This is to ensure the prevention of duplicate applicants,” ASEEM said in the letter.

The letter insisted the Telangana government accept new ration card applications at the gram panchayat level through Mee Seva to ensure transparency. This would help applicants to check their status and provide at least a month for the same.

The letter suggested that the eligibility criteria and procedures should be widely publicised through local media and other media, in different languages, to avoid any possible confusion among the applicants, regarding the new move.

ASEEM’s representation emphasized resolving old complaints and representations, complying with food commission directives and Telangana High Court orders regarding ration cards, and issuing them without requiring additional verification.

The representation also suggested amendments to the guidelines related to the Samagra Kutumba Survey (SKS). ASEEM alleged SKS does not have any legal backing and should be scrapped.

The letter reminded the Telangana government it must ensure that no eligible family is deprived of food security benefits, under the National Food Security Act, 2013.

Demolition of structures, primarily businesses, opposite Safina Hotel, Victoria Hotel to Volta Road in Moghalpura began early on Tuesday, January 21.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail project’s phase 2 expansion has been sanctioned by the Telangana government for a total budget of Rs 24,269 crore. The second phase of the metro will primarily feature elevated corridors, except for a 1.6 km stretch within the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). All five proposed corridors will extend the existing metro lines:

The five new Hyderabad metro corridors include Nagole – Shamshabad RGIA Airport (36.8 km), Raidurg – Kokapet (11.6 km), MGBS – Chandrayangutta Old City corridor (7.5 km), Miyapur – Patancheru (13.4 km), LB Nagar – Hayat Nagar (7.1 km).

The second phase of the expansion of the Hyderabad metro project is expected to be completed within four years.
