PIL against Hyderabad Metro expansion in Telangana HC

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has issued interim orders halting the investigation into a case registered against former minister and senior BRS leader T Harish Rao by the Panjagutta police, based on a complaint of phone tapping from a real estate businessman.

The court’s decision, made on Wednesday, February 19, extends previous interim orders protecting Harish Rao and former DCP Radha Kishan Rao from arrest in connection with the case.

Justice K Lakshman presided over the hearing of separate petitions filed by Harish Rao and Radha Kishan Rao, who sought to quash the case registered at the Panjagutta Police Station in Hyderabad.

During the proceedings, Public Prosecutor Palle Nageswara Rao requested an adjournment, citing the unavailability of Supreme Court senior advocate Siddharth Luthra.

However, Harish Rao’s legal team, led by R Chandrasekhar Reddy and senior lawyer Dama Seshadri Naidu, raised strong objections.

They argued that a high-ranking officer had threatened a witness in the case and that the third accused was detained at the police station until 1:30 am along with his wife and two-year-old child, alleging forced signatures on incriminating documents.

The Public Prosecutor countered that Harish Rao and Radha Kishan Rao were already protected from arrest, and thus there was no reason to prevent the investigation from proceeding.

Justice Lakshman responded to these arguments by questioning whether statements had been taken and if they were indeed against the petitioners.

The judge cautioned the prosecution against employing “tricks” with the courts, stating, “On the one hand, you are asking for an adjournment, and on the other hand, you are making arrests”.

Ultimately, the High Court adjourned the inquiry to March 3, instructing the Panjagutta police to suspend their investigation until that time.

Telangana HC seeks report on food in government hostels

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday, February 19, asked the government to submit a report on food served in state-run hostels.

The Telangana government has been granted two weeks to furnish the report. The court issued the orders while hearing petitions related to the condition and management of government-run hostels and educational buildings in Telangana

The court further stressed that the report should reflect the actual conditions in these hostels, and it instructed the formation of a committee of experts to compile the report.

The committee will assess the current state of facilities in government hostels, gurukul schools, and other educational institutions, focusing on the adequacy of the living conditions, facilities provided to students, and the overall management of these establishments.

Petitioner counsel Chikkadu Prabhakar argued that over 9,000 hostels and schools across the state lack proper facilities for students.

He stated that the government had failed to provide adequate living conditions and facilities in these institutions, which were critical for the welfare of students.

In response to the concerns raised, the Telangana High Court ordered a committee to be formed to assess the issue and submit a report.

The court has assured that necessary actions would be taken based on the report’s findings. The bench was dealing with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by K Akhil Sri Guru Teja, which raised concerns about the deficiencies in the facilities offered to students residing in these institutions.

gold rates in hyderabad

Hyderabad: Gold rates in Hyderabad jumped by Rs 390 to hit a new all-time high on Thursday amid uncertainty over US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

So far this year, the yellow metal has surged by Rs 10,040 per 10 grams.

Gold rates in Hyderabad surged by over 12 pc in 2025 so far

As of today, the price of 10 grams of 22-carat gold in Hyderabad stands at Rs 80,700, whereas 24-carat gold has soared to Rs 88,040.

This marks an over 12 percent increase compared to the beginning of the year when 22-carat gold was priced at Rs 71,500 and 24-carat gold at Rs 78,000.

Hyderabad’s spike in gold prices is part of a nationwide trend, with other major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru also witnessing substantial increases.

Reasons for surge

The rising demand for gold as a safe-haven investment has fueled the surge in prices amid US President Trump’s new tariff threats, combined with rising geopolitical uncertainty.

Trump has said that he will announce tariffs on cars, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals “over the next month or sooner” as he pushes for new levies to shrink America’s trade deficits, boost domestic manufacturing, and achieve other policy goals.

He has already announced a plan to start imposing 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports on March 12.

He reiterated that companies that do not manufacture their goods in America will face tariffs.

In view of the uncertainty and trade policies, people are shifting their investments towards gold, resulting in a surge in the rates of the yellow metal in Hyderabad and other cities.

Hyderabad: A female doctor from Hyderabad went missing in Karnataka’s Koppal district on Wednesday, February 19; she is feared to be washed away.

The victim was identified as 26-year-old Ananya Mohan Rao. She was reportedly working at a hospital in Hyderabad’s Nampally area. The incident occurred when Rao was on a trip with her friends and decided to swim in the Tungabhadra River on February 18.

Hyderabad’s Shah Hatim Lake near Golconda on verge of disappearance

Hyderabad: Once a sprawling 104-acre water body, the historic Shah Hatim Lake which is located near Hyderabad’s Golconda Fort is now on the brink of disappearance.

Over the years, unchecked encroachment, large-scale dumping of construction waste, and sewage discharge have shrunk the lake to just 20 acres.

Rapid decline of Hyderabad’s Shah Hatim Lake near Golconda

The lake which was built during the Qutb Shahi era has suffered immense neglect. Its waters are now covered by thick layers of water hyacinth.

Due to the neglect, the water body has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes too.

Nearly 80 percent of the remaining water surface is clogged with invasive plants. These plants are further deteriorating the lake’s condition.

Apart from that, discarded household waste, plastic debris, and construction rubble have turned the lake into an unofficial dumping ground.

The once-pristine water body now struggles for survival amidst pollution and urban expansion.

Failed conservation efforts

Although multiple attempts were made by civic authorities to restore Shah Hatim Lake near Golconda, Hyderabad, efforts have largely fallen short.

While certain initiatives were undertaken to clear the lake and improve drainage, they failed to prevent encroachments and pollution.

The result is frequent flooding in surrounding areas during heavy rains.

With rapid urbanization swallowing Hyderabad’s historical water bodies, Shah Hatim Lake is at serious risk of vanishing altogether.

Urgent intervention is needed to remove encroachments, control waste dumping, and implement sustainable conservation measures.

Hyderabad: Meta removes accounts related to BJP MLA Raja Singh over hate speech

Hyderabad: In a decisive action, IT giant Meta has removed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh’s Facebook and Instagram accounts over allegations of hate speech.

These accounts were removed according to Meta’s “dangerous individuals and organizations” policy.

These platforms, mainly Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, recently shared details about the BJP MLA’s events in 2024 and his amplified latest hate-filled speeches, often targeted at minority communities, according to a report by India Hate Lab. The study analysed various mass gatherings, including political rallies, electoral campaign events, religious processions, protest marches, and nationalist rallies.

Facebook and YouTube were reportedly the primary platforms for his hate speech dissemination. Facebook alone accounted for 495 hate speech videos while YouTube had 211 videos.

The report also found that 266 anti-minority hate speeches by senior BJP leaders, mostly between April and June months when the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were held, were live-streamed on YouTube, Facebook, and X through official party accounts.

74.5 percent of Raja Singh’s hate speech posted in Facebook

The India Hate Lab report highlights that out of Raja Singh’s 259 documented cases of hate speech, including direct calls for violence against minority communities, particularly Muslims in India, 219 speeches were initially shared or live-streamed on social media. Facebook accounted for the majority with 164 instances, an overwhelming 74.9 percent of the total speeches, followed by YouTube with 49, 22.4 percent and Instagram with six.

It further revealed that the BJP MLA made 32 hate speeches at events across India, including 22 instances where he explicitly incited violence primarily against Muslims and in some cases against the Christian community. Of these, 16 speeches were initially shared on YouTube while 13 appeared on Facebook.

Meta’s ban doesn’t stop Singh’s supporters

However, despite Meta’s ban, the Goshamahal MLA and his supporters managed to share hate speeches on the two platforms. This is being done by creating proxy social media pages.

Some of the banned accounts on Facebook include ‘Raja Singh (Bhagyanagar) MLA’, ‘Raja Singh (Dhoolpet) MLA’, ‘RAJA SINGH YUVA SENA (RSYS)’ and ‘Tiger Raja Singh Official Group’.

Additionally, several other pages, groups, and accounts in Hindi collectively had over 100,000 followers, the report said.

On Instagram, Raja Singh and his supporters managed four key accounts: @rajasinghmla, @t.usharajasinghofficial, @t.rajabhaimla1, and @t.rajabhaimla3. These accounts had a combined following of nearly 198,900 users.

HYDRAA demolishes illegal structures in Hyderabad's Parki Lake

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) enforcement teams demolished unauthorized structures in Pariki Lake of Hyderabad’s Quthbullapur on Thursday, February 20.

The Pariki Lake Conservation Committee has lodged a complaint with HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath, alleging encroachment on the 60-acre lake. In response, HYDRAA launched a full-scale investigation, coordinating with revenue, irrigation, and municipal departments.

Following the probe, demolitions were carried out in the FTL area of Pariki Lake in Hyderabad, where unauthorized constructions were identified.

Meanwhile, the committee reported that Balakrishna, a purported local leader, was illegally selling government land and plots within the lake’s FTL perimeter through notarized agreements.

On February 18, HYDRAA excavations uncovered hidden waters of Bathukamma Kunta Lake, which was believed to have been lost to encroachment.

On Tuesday, February 18 after digging through the thick layers of soil, Bathukamma Kunta Lake began to emerge, reigniting hope for the revival of the once-vital water body. “If all the soil that has been filled over the years is removed, the pond will be filled with water once again,” Hyderabad residents stated.

HYDRAA begins work to restore 6 lakes across Hyderabad

Earlier, HYDRAA launched an ambitious project to rejuvenate several lakes across Hyderabad.

This initiative focuses on restoring vital water bodies such as Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula in Shivrampally, Thammidi Kunta in Madhapur, Sunnam Cheruvu in Guttala Begumpet, Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally, and Nalla/Pedda Cheruvu in Uppal. The overarching goals of this project are to improve groundwater levels, prevent urban flooding, and enhance the overall environment of Hyderabad.

HYDRAA has set a target to complete the revival of all six lakes by June. A 3D development model has been prepared for Nalla Cheruvu in Uppal, showcasing its transformation post-restoration.

The agency’s broader vision includes expanding its reach to cover 50 percent of Telangana’s population by 2050 and establishing a new police station along with increasing its Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams.
