Hyderabad pilgrim on way to Prayagraj dies in accident

Hyderabad: A car accident in the early hours of Wednesday morning February 19, in Narsingi, Ranga Reddy district, resulted in injuries to two students.

The incident occurred near CBIT College in Gandipet, as the car was traveling from Shankarpally towards Narsingi.

According to reports, the car collided with a pillar, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The airbags deployed upon impact prevented more serious injuries to the occupants.

Two students who were in the car sustained injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital by local residents.

Authorities arrived at the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

This incident follows a series of recent accidents in the Narsingi area, including a fatal accident on February 1st where a doctor was killed and another critically injured when their car crashed into an advertisement hoarding pole.

Dr. V Jayanth aged 24 died in the crash, while his colleague Dr. Bhumika, sustained serious injuries and later died on Saturday. In another incident, a couple died after their bike was hit by a car in Narsingi.

Local police are continuing to investigate the accident.

Hyderabad becomes more crowded than Delhi as population density surges

Hyderabad's Charminar market flooded with Eid shoppers

Hyderabad: Hyderabad has become more crowded than Delhi as the city has overtaken the national capital in population density.

According to the Telangana Statistical Abstract (ATLAS)-2024, Hyderabad now has a population density of 18,161 people per square kilometer whereas, in the case of Delhi, it is 11,313 people per square kilometer.

Why is Hyderabad’s population density increasing?

The rise in Hyderabad’s population density is largely driven by its booming IT sector. The sector continues to attract professionals, entrepreneurs, and students from across the country.

Moreover, the city’s rich cultural heritage, strong educational institutions, and expanding infrastructure are contributing to its growing appeal.

However, despite this sharp increase, Hyderabad still falls behind some of the world’s most densely populated cities.

Manila in the Philippines leads globally with 43,079 people per square kilometer. In India, Mumbai remains the most crowded city with 28,508 people per square kilometer.

Challenges

While Hyderabad’s growth signals economic prosperity, it also presents major challenges for urban planners.

The city is grappling with infrastructure strain, housing shortages, and pressure on public services.

The Telangana Statistical Abstract (ATLAS)-2024 which is based on 2011 census data highlights that while Hyderabad is becoming denser, the overall population density of Telangana remains relatively low at 312 people per square kilometer.

The state’s total population currently stands at 3.5 crore which is spread across 1,12,077 square kilometers.

According to projections, Telangana’s population is expected to reach 3.92 crore by 2031. However, its share in India’s total population is set to decline slightly from 2.77 percent in 2021 to 2.66 percent in 2031.

GHMC commissioner orders Yakutpura sewage survey, inspects Hyderabad drains

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner Ilambarthi on Wednesday, February 19 directed officials to conduct a comprehensive survey of the Yakutpura sewage drain to assess its condition and resolve drainage issues in the area.

The commissioner along with other officials inspected various stormwater drains in Rangeli Kidiki, Hussain Koti, Maulana ka Chilla, Ganga Nagar, and Rein Bazaar.

During the inspection, the overflowing sewage at Rangeli Kidiki Street was reviewed. Officials informed the GHMC commissioner that the Ganga Nagar drain, built during the Nizam’s era, had overflowed during the last rainy season.

He ordered project engineering officers to conduct a full survey and submit a detailed report.

At Maulana Chilla, the MLA Zafar Hussain mentioned the three-year delay in completing the Ganga Nagar sewer project, prompting the GHMC commissioner to direct agencies to expedite the work. He assured that funds were available and emphasized the need for timely completion.

In Rein Bazaar, residents reported stagnant water entering homes due to blockages in the box drain. The MLA noted that Rs 1.60 crore proposals had been sent for drain work, and the Ilambarthi instructed officials to submit a full report and expedite construction after tender approval.

Systematic drainage plan, Rs 545 cr nala works before monsoon: GHMC

The commissioner stressed the need for a stormwater drain master plan, similar to the road development plan, to ensure systematic drainage management and connect existing nalas with urban expansion. He stated that the Strategic Nala Development Program (SNDP) is working to mitigate flooding in the Old City.

The second phase of nala works, worth Rs 545 crores, has been tendered, and officials were instructed to complete all works before the next monsoon.

GHMC launches property tax program to resolve grievances in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced a Property Tax Solution (PTP) program to resolve tax-related grievances for owners.

GHMC commissioner Ilambarthi on Wednesday, February 19 stated that the program will run every Saturday from February 22 to March 29 at the circle office from 10 am to 1 pm.

This initiative aims to address various property tax concerns, including revision petitions (RPs), tax assessments, payment registrations via bill collectors/RTGS, online dues settlement, and legal disputes in Hyderabad.

Additionally, self-assessment matters and issues filed through the Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS) will also be handled.

GHMC has urged property owners to visit their respective Deputy Commissioner’s office on these dates to resolve their tax-related issues.

Earlier, GHMC was considering a shift in how property tax in Hyderabad is collected.

Instead of the current annual or bi-annual payment system, GHMC plans to implement a monthly collection model, aiming to make tax payments more manageable for property owners across the city.

Under the proposed system, the total annual property tax would be divided into 12 equal instalments. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on taxpayers.

At present, property owners in Hyderabad have the option to pay property tax either annually or in two halves—once in April-September and again in October-March. This bi-annual system has been in place for several years, but the shift to monthly payments could bring greater flexibility for property owners.

Hospital in Hyderabad removes pen cap from man's lung after 21 yrs

Hyderabad: The KIMS hospital in Hyderabad’s Kondapur successfully operated on a 26-year-old man from Karimnagar, suffering from a persistent cough and unexplained weight loss for ten days, was found to have a pen cap lodged in his lungs which he accidentally swallowed the age of 5.

Doctors at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad diagnosed the issue after a CT scan revealed a lump-like structure.

At first, doctors suspected it to be an obstruction whereas further examination during the procedure confirmed it was a pen cap.

When doctors inquired, his elder brother recalled that the patient had swallowed it at age five. At the time, an examination found nothing unusual, and it was assumed the object had passed naturally.

Using flexible bronchoscopy, doctors at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad spent three hours carefully removing the tissue buildup around the pen cap before extracting it, avoiding the need for surgery. “The prolonged presence of the foreign body had caused lung damage, but we managed to restore the affected area with antibiotics,” said Dr Shubhakar Nadella, clinical and interventional pulmonologist.

“Had the condition gone undetected, it could have led to severe lung damage requiring surgical intervention. Fortunately, timely treatment ensured the patient made a full recovery,” he added further.

Earlier, Ankura Hospital in Hyderabad successfully treated a three-month-old baby who accidentally ingested an open safety pin.

The parents rushed the child to Hospital in Hyderabad where upon examination by Dr Parijat Ram Tripathi, a consultant pediatric gastroenterologist and hepatologist, a radiographic scan revealed that the safety pin had penetrated the infant’s stomach lining, creating a critical situation that necessitated immediate medical intervention.

Within 30 minutes of the infant’s arrival, Dr Tripathi and his team conducted a crucial endoscopic procedure to remove a 2cm safety pin that was dangerously lodged in the stomach lining.

High demand for Hafiz-e-Quran in Hyderabad during Ramzan

Hafiz-e-Quran in high demand in Hyderabad during Ramzan

Hyderabad: Come Ramzan, the hafiz-e-Quran or huffaaz, ones who have memorized the Quran in its entirety are called in and are in demand across the city.

The Hafiz-e-Quran, as they are also called have completed the memorization course from Islamic seminaries. In Ramzan, they lead the Taraweeh prayers at mosques throughout the month.

The holy month for Muslims is a time when these huffaaz are in demand at mosques, private function halls, and gated communities where the Taraweeh prayers are held.

In Greater Hyderabad, there are around 8,000 mosques. “At a few mosques, the regular hafiz conducts the Taraweeh prayers. In other mosques, the committee through madrasa management hires one,” said Mufti Mohammed Jaweed, who leads the prayers at a mosque in Yakutpura.

Roughly, 15000 huffaaz find temporary jobs during Ramzan. “On average, a hafiz is paid around Rs 20,000 by the management of the mosque or the person who organizes the Taraweeh prayer at a private place. The people who attend the prayers as a goodwill give some amount,” said hafiz Syed Muzaffar. The hafiz said the honorarium received by them was for sparing their time and not for reciting the Quran.

In prominent mosques in the city, where huge gatherings are witnessed for Taraweeh prayers, the hafiz gets hefty remuneration and gift amounts.

During the rest of the year, the hafiz lead five-time prayers at the mosque or tutor the Quran to students at homes or Islamic seminaries. “For the job, they get a pittance as remuneration as mosques do not generate enough funds to pay them huge salaries,” said a masjid committee member.

What are Taraweeh prayers held during Ramzan in Hyderabad

Taraweeh prayers are a special form of voluntary prayers that are performed during the Islamic month of Ramzan. During Taraweeh, the Quran reciter completes 2 rakats in 10 sets that total up to 20 rakats. The hafiz completes the entire Quran in 1, 3, 5, 10 and 27 days. The Quran reciters practice their recitation during the day so that they make no mistakes in prayers.

BJP silent on Ramzan timings for Muslims in AP: Telangana Congress

Congress attacks BJP on Ramzan issue in Telangana.

Hyderabad: Calling it selective outrage, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin on Wednesday, February 18, attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the state government’s Ramzan order, which allows Muslim employees to leave at 4 p.m. for the holy month.

Calling it a “classic case of hypocrisy and communal opportunism”, Syed Nizamuddin pointed out that the BJP, which is part of the ruling alliance in Andhra Pradesh with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), had no objections when a similar order was issued there. “Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments have permitted their Muslim employees to leave office at 4 p.m. during the month of Ramzan,” he said.

Addressing a press conference, the Congress leader said, “In Andhra Pradesh, they sit quietly in the ruling alliance while the same Ramzan leave order is issued. But in Telangana, they scream ‘appeasement.’ Why is BJP MLA Raja Singh silent there? Why isn’t BJP’s IT Cell head Amit Malviya attacking the Andhra government?”

Nizamuddin also said the Ramzan leave order has been in place for nearly five decades in both Telangana and undivided Andhra Pradesh. “Since the 1980s, two orders are issued every Ramzan – one allowing Muslim employees to leave at 4 p.m., another permitting shops to remain open late. Even during Chandrababu Naidu’s rule, the practice continued. Was the BJP in a coma all these years?” he asked.

‘Why no permission for Ayyappa devotees?’ BJP MP Bandi Sanjay

Former Telangana BJP president and Union minister Bandi Sanjay on the same day also attacked the ruling Congress saying over the issue saying, “Are the Congress party leaders actually Hindus? Is it Hindu blood that flows in them? Hindus in Telangana have become beggars.”

He questioned why the Congress government is not giving permission to Ayyappa devotees in ‘mala’ and Shiva mala in a similar way.

Hyderabad: A former Telangana home guard was arrested by the Banjara Hills police on Monday, February 17, for duping a man of Rs 2,82,725, by posing as a police officer.

The arrested man has been identified as Harijan Govardhan, 35, a resident of Kukatpally, working as an Amul milk distributor.

According to the police, Govardhan who worked as a home guard between 2009-2014, met the victim Areti Gnana Sai Prasad, a Hyderabad-based software engineer, who had plans to start a restaurant business.

Govardhan introduced himself as a police head constable, working with the Task Force at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) Building.

To gain trust, Govardhan invited Sai Prasad to meet him at the ICCC building. Govardan duped Sai Prasad by promising to help him open up the business.

Upon receiving money from Sai Prasad, Govardhan never helped him with the business nor returned the money, and stopped contact with Sai Prasad.

State government announces 25% discount on registration of plots in layouts till March 31.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government announced a 25 percent discount on the registration of open plots in layouts under the Layout Regularisation Scheme (LRS) of 2020, for which plot buyers have now been given time until March 31.

A review meeting on the implementation of LRS was held at Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat on Wednesday, February 19, by deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka, revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, and industries minister D Sridhar Babu on speeding-up the registration of such layouts.

The scheme applies to those who have bought plots in layouts but have not registered them, and to layouts where only 10 percent of plots have been registered and the rest haven’t. It also applies to those who have registered the sale deed but are yet to have their plots regularised.

The ministers, however, cautioned the officials against regularising those lands that fell under the prohibited list.

The officials have been directed to ensure that the buyers complete their registration at the sub-registrar’s offices instead of going from pillar to post.

Hyderabad: AI, machine learning to help identify mule accounts

$

0

Banking experts feels that artificial intelligence and machine learning could hold the key to identifying mule accounts used in cyber crime.

Hyderabad: Mule accounts are the biggest challenge to the law enforcement and bank officials dealing with the growing threat of cyber crime, said cyber crime experts. Industry experts see Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) as the emerging technologies that will play a major role in identifying such accounts.

Despite the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) being able to recover Rs 183 crore in 2024 which would have otherwise been lost, bankers claim that there is nothing to identify money mules used by cyber criminals until they do a transaction.

A panel discussion on the topic “Mule hunters- tech solutions for money mules” was held on the concluding day of the “Shield 2025 conclave” held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) on Wednesday, February 19, where the issue was discussed by experts in detail.

The conclave was jointly organised by the Telangana Cyber Crime Bureau (TGCSB) and Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC).

Nilesh Deshpande, head of financial crime prevention group, ICICI, said that at a time when customers were deciding the payments and their payment methods, it has become increasing difficult to do a background check on the accounts to identify potential mule accounts.

He said that the process involved in depositing money in mule accounts, then fragmenting the amount in various other accounts, consolidation of the money, and then finally the amount being converted into crypto currency at the final layer of the cyber fraud involving an unidentified criminal is too complex and happens within no time before the money is gone.

“In 2024, Rs 22,812 crore has been lost in cyber crime in India, and across the globe it was Rs 75,000 crore. 0.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) being involved in mule transactions which is reported was just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

The ICICI representative said that even while doing e-KYC and video KYC of their accounts, cyber criminals have been using IP spoofing apps to make it look like they were in a particular city, though they may be as far as the north eastern states.

He, however, said that banks putting the customer service as paramount, and banks not ready to spend more on innovative technologies to identify such mule accounts because of the higher costs involved with no return on investment, were some of the banking side of concerns.

Rajesh Bansal, CEO of the Reserve Bank Of India Hyderabad said that out of 10 banks involved in an RBI’s study, it was found that 8 were still using conventional rule-based system to identify such accounts, which were showing mostly ‘false positives.’ “With mulehunter.ai deployed in 3-5 banks presently, such issues could be addressed in an hour,” he observed.

The RBI CEO said that in three years from now, the discussion on mule accounts will no longer be needed, as steps will be taken to address cyber crime associated with such accounts.

Some numbers

  • There has been 35% increase in mule account frauds in the last 6 months.
  • There were 1,20,869 cyber crime victims in Telangana in 2024.
  • Global cyber crime amount to reach USD 10.5 trillion by 2025.
  • There have been losses amounting to USD 113.3 billion due to cyber frauds.
  • In 2024, there have been 208 billion digital transactions in India, which is 46% more than in 2023.
  • The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCERT) and the 1930 cybercrime helpline have helped identify over 6,000 victims of online frauds.

Hyderabad: Devarayamjal’s Dalits saw an end to their four-decade-long struggle to have a road to reach their houses, as the Hyderabad Disaster Response Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency’s (HYDRAA) Disaster Response Force (DRF) team demolished the boundary constructed by a realtor in 1985, that had closed all entry and exit points to reach their colony.

The operation took place in Devarayamjal village of Thumkunta municipality in Shamirpet mandal of Medchal-Malkajgiri district on Wednesday, 19 February, where the boundary wall constructed by Tirumala Colony Ventures was demolished by HYDRAA.

The Dalits, who had complained about HYDRAA’s Prajavani programme on 17 February, informed the agency that they had previously taken their issue to the SC/ST Commission in February 2022 and had received orders that were never implemented.

The victims also told HYDRAA that neither ambulances nor fire engines could access their colony, forcing them to carry pregnant women out to reach an ambulance outside their street. Residents could only enter using two-wheelers through a narrow path.

The HYDRAA commissioner, after reviewing the case, directed officials to ensure that nothing obstructed the Dalits from accessing their street.
