Hyderabad: After Secunderabad, Nampally station’s demolition feared

Nampally Railway Station

Hyderabad: After the shocking demolition of the historic and iconic Secunderabad railway station’s main terminus last week, activists now fear that the heritage building of the Nampally station could also meet a similar fate. The iconic pink coloured main facade of the Secunderabad station was razed down by the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities as part of redevelopment works.

While SCR officials said that as of now there is no plan to demolish the Nampally railway station, the structure, built a little before 1910, is reportedly not in the list of protected monuments. The now demolished Secunderabad railway station was originally built in 1874 by the Nizams Guaranteed Railways with the help of the British.

Although the pink-cream structure that was demolished was not the station’s original building, it was constructed in the 1950s and had long served as one of the main stations in Hyderabad. The Nampally and Kachiguda stations were built subsequently.

The now demolished Secunderabad station. Demolition work in progress.

The Kachiguda railways station was built during the reign of Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad and is one of the main junctions in Telangana. The Nampally station was built during the time of his predecessor Mahboob Ali Pasha, and also had the Nampally Sarai (temporary rest house) that was constructed along with it.

“The fact is that the SCR demolished the Secunderabad station’s iconic Art Deco building because it was not part of any protected list is a cause for concern. They have no sense of protecting our railway heritage as well. They could have easily let the structure remain,” said a activist who did not want to be quoted.

The South Central Railway (SCR) demolished the main terminal building of the Secunderabad Railway Station as part of its Rs 720 crore redevelopment project.

Hyderabad’s Secunderabad Railway Station is undergoing a significant transformation as part of a major redevelopment project. A key feature of the project is the construction of a multi-story building on the north side, covering 22,516 square meters, while the south side will be expanded by 14,792 square meters.

As part of the modernization efforts, a two-story sky concourse spanning 108 meters will be built. The first level will be dedicated to passenger movement, while the second level will serve as a rooftop plaza.

Along with this, Secunderabad’s station redevelopment will include a sky concourse, multi-level and underground parking, travelators, lifts, and escalators. The modern design will also incorporate dedicated spaces for retail outlets, cafeterias, and recreational areas, enhancing the overall passenger experience. The revamped station is set to be fully operational by the end of next year.

Cab touting at Hyderabad airport proves menace to passengers, drivers

789 free cab rides offered across Hyderabad for safe travel on New Year's eve

Hyderabad: Unauthorised cab drivers at the Hyderabad Airport are raising concerns among both passengers and licensed drivers. Passengers face harassment with inflated prices, longer routes and being stuffed in with other passengers without consent while registered cab drivers face risks to their livelihood.

According to a report in Times Of India, 429 cases of cab touting were reported to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) police station between January 1 to February 17. Despite measures taken by the government, like the deployment of 31 anti-touting personnel and making passengers aware of the authorised transport options like prepaid taxis and Pushpak buses etc, the problem persists.

Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), while alleging weak enforcement and inadequate action against unauthorized cab drivers operating in Hyderabad Airport have called for more stringent interventions.

TGPWU founder president Shaik Salauddin stated that he is awaiting a meeting with the RGIA management. He plans to present demands for priority access for app-based and taxi drivers, as well as improved pricing mechanisms in collaboration with cab aggregators like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The goal is to ensure a fair share of airport cab rides for licensed cabbies while preventing fare manipulation, thereby protecting both passengers and drivers from unfair pricing practices.

Last year in November, under the TGPWU, around 25,000 cab drivers had boycotted Uber citing the company’s refusal to introduce uniform fares and transparent policies that ensure fair earnings for drivers. Drivers had demanded fair pricing and a ban on private vehicles, particularly two and four-wheelers with white number plates, that operate as taxis without the necessary commercial registration.

Earlier, the unions had undertaken a campaign called ‘low fare no air’ under which members of the TGPWU decided to boycott rides if fares to the airport were less than Rs 1000 to 1200 saying that after including fuel prices and the commission given to the apps, the driver is left with nothing to take home.

SLBC tunnel roof collapse: 2 engineers among those trapped, informs Uttam

Hyderabad: Shedding more light on the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel roof collapse that occurred earlier in the day, state irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy informed there are two engineers, an eractor operator, a general operative and four labourers trapped inside.

The trapped workers included Manoj Kumar (Project Engineer) from Uttar Pradesh, Srinivas (Field Engineer) from Uttar Pradesh, Sandeep Sahu (Worker) from Jharkhand, Jataks (Worker) from Jharkhand, Santosh Sahu (Worker) from Jharkhand, Anuj Sahu (Worker) from Jharkhand, Sunny Singh (Worker) from Jammu & Kashmir, and Gurpreet Singh (Worker) from Punjab.

Identities of workers trapped inside the SLBC tunnel in Domalapenta of Nagarkurnool district

Reddy reached the spot where the incident happened in a special helicopter and took stock of the rescue efforts that are currently underway.

Addressing the media, he said at around 8 am, the workers entered the tunnel and turned on the boring drilling machine at a 14 km distance inside the tunnel.

“After digging to a depth of 20 meters, water began seeping in from one side of the tunnel, causing the earth to cave in. The worker operating the boring machine noticed the water leakage and immediately alerted the 42 workers behind the machine to evacuate the tunnel. However, eight workers, including two engineers, who were in front of the machine got trapped and couldn’t escape,” he told the media.

Assuring that no stone will be left unturned to rescue the trapped workers, the minister admitted that the rescue efforts have been challenging as the accident happened 14 km inside the tunnel.

Asked if oxygen would be provided to those trapped, the minister quoted officials as saying that ventilation would not be a problem.

“Works for the project began in 2004-2005 to take water to Nalgonda from 900 metres above sea level through gravity. In some places of the tunnel cracks can be seen sometimes, and by doing grouting we go ahead with the work,” he said, adding that dewatering and desilting was being done to clear way for the rescue operation.

He said only by Sunday evening some development with regard to the rescue operations could be revealed.

SCCL roped in to rescue ‘trapped’ workers

A 19-member team from state-owned coal mining firm, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. left for Srisailam Left Bank Canal in Nagarkurnool district on Saturday to join rescue operations to rescue the trapped workers when a portion of a roof collapsed in the under-construction stretch of the SLBC tunnel.

According to a top official of the company, SCCL has the expertise in rescuing people in such incidents and also has the necessary equipment. The rescue team from the company is headed by a general manager-level officer.

“SCCL has the necessary expertise to handle critical situations such as roof collapses. And also we have the necessary equipment imported from Australia, the USA and Poland. The machinery and rock cutters are so advanced that they can cut huge rocks and boulders within minutes,” SCCL CMD N Balram told PTI.

Indian Army’s task force comprising army engineers have been pressed to assist in the rescue operations being overseen by a commander. Rescue and medical equipment has been mobilised to aid the rescue operation.

PM Modi speaks to Telangana CM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy on the measures to rescue people trapped in the SLBC tunnel roof collapse and assured him of all possible help.

An official said, “PM Modi called Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and discussed the rescue of personnel at the SLBC tunnel. He assured all help and assistance in the rescue efforts.”

GHMC to revive Annapurna food kiosks in Hyderabad, Meals at Rs 5

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to revive the Annapurna food kiosks offering low-price meals across its limits.

In a meeting chaired by the GHMC commissioner K Ilambarithi on Saturday, February 22, a special committee was formed to inspect the minimum facilities and food conditions for the revival of Annapurna kiosks.

GHMC chief engineer Bhaskar Reddy was appointed as the head of the committee and additional commissioners Pankaja of the health department and Venugopal Reddy of the advertisement department were appointed as its members.

The special committee members, on Saturday, inspected the Annapurna kiosk at the Mint compound, behind the BR Ambedkar Secretariat building, in line with the directives of the GHMC Commissioner.

The committee members had lunch at the kiosk, expressing satisfaction with the food quality served there. The officials also inspected the condition of the Annapurna canteens at two other sites near Lakdikapul, directing engineers to undertake repairs to revive the kiosks.

Special committee chief Bhaskar Reddy said that a team of engineers would be deputed to report on the condition of the canteens at various places under the GHMC limits.

Annapurna food scheme

The Annapurna Food Scheme has been the Telangana Government’s flagship food program since 2014, providing food to the urban poor, especially daily wage workers in Hyderabad.

The state government is speeding up efforts to bring back Annapurna food kiosks wherever they are defunct, to provide meals at Rs 5, to reduce urban food insecurity.

Through the Annapurna food kiosks, the government aims to offer nutritious food at an affordable price of Rs 5. A meal at the kiosk would include rice, sambar, curry, and pickle.

As many as 150 such Annapurna canteens were established in 2014 under the GHMC limits, serving around 45,000 meals every day in 2022.

Many of these Annapurna canteens are defunct now, which would soon be revived by the state government and GHMC, according to an official statement.

According to a case study by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Hyderabad, these canteens help governments mitigate challenges posed by a higher rate of informal employment and rising food inflation.

Sorry condition of Annapurna kiosk in Lakdikapul

The Annapurna canteen located at the Lakdikapul Junction has been in a deplorable condition for months, remaining defunct while its premises have been subjected to open urination by the public.

The Lakdikapul junction hosts a large number of homeless migrants and destitute people. With them often resorting to taking alms to find food, while the Annapurna kiosk being shut with the smell of urine reeking at its premises contradicts the government’s objective of helping the urban poor.

With the governmental measures now accelerating the revival of Annapurna kiosks, GHMC has a larger task at its shoulders to not just reopen the kiosks, but also to keep its premises clean, and safeguard it from open defecation.

Oppn tried to disrupt caste survey in Telangana: CM Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday, February 22 claimed that the opposition tried to disrupt the caste survey in Telangana.

Addressing a meeting with leaders of the BC communities at the Praja Bhavan, the chief minister said that the outcome of the caste survey is 100 percent accurate. He urged the BC leaders not to get carried away due to such false claims.

He said that the state government is committed to the welfare of Backward Classes in Telangana adding that the formation of a subcommittee to analyse the caste census proved its sincerity. “The Telangana Planning department has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the Caste Survey strictly without any legal hurdles,” Reddy claimed.

Reddy challenged the opposition to prove the allegation of discrepancies in the caste survey. The chief minister further said that the survey was taken up to fulfil a long-standing demand. Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Reddy said that the saffron party was spreading misinformation regarding the survey since it is against the exercise.

He further attacked the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president K Chandrashekar Rao over the former’s remark on the exercise, “According to a KCR survey, BCs constituted only 51 percent. As per our caste census, it is 56.33 percent. BC leaders should know whether the number of BCs decreased or increased,” Reddy added.

The previous BRS government did not disclose the details of the Comprehensive Family Survey conducted during its tenure, as it was “full of errors”. The last government used the survey report only during elections and not for the benefit of the people, he said, attacking the BRS party.

“Opposition parties conspired to ruin the entire system by distorting the process. The BC fraternity should take this seriously,” Reddy cautioned.

“No one has ever conducted a caste census in independent India. Some fear that BCs will stake a claim once the Backward Classes population is declared,” he said.

Asserting that the outcome of the caste survey is 100 per cent accurate, he appealed to everyone not to be “misled by falsehoods”.

Teacher in Amethi school slaps boy, ruptures eardrum

Hyderabad: A class 8 student of a private school died by suicide on Saturday by jumping from the school building after being “reprimanded” and “slapped” by a teacher, police said.

The incident occurred at around 9.30 am when the Physical Education Teacher allegedly rebuked the 14-year-old boy in front of other students inside the classroom for reportedly “turning the direction” of a CCTV camera, they said.

Feeling “insulted,” the boy later told the teacher he needed to use the washroom but instead went to the fourth floor of the building and jumped, police said.

The student was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, police added.

Some students told media that the teacher had allegedly slapped the boy.

A note, purportedly written by the boy, apologising to his mother for “ending his life” was found in his book, police said.

A case has been registered on charges of abetment to suicide, and further investigation is underway.

Hyderabad traffic police conducts awareness programme on vehicle modifications

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Traffic Police on Saturday, February 22 conducted an awareness programme for traders dealing with the fixing of black films, sirens, musical and multi-tone horns, modified silencers, number plates and vehicle alterations and modifications.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), P Viswa Prasad, IPS, attended the awareness session and explained various do’s and don’ts of vehicle modifications and sought the cooperation of the traders.

He asked them to educate their customers and to maintain records of the work done. He further added that if violations are noticed, the traders concerned will be treated as abettors of violation.

During the program, traders and mechanics were educated on the Motor Vehicle Act, where police stressed against the use of black films as they can obstruct visibility and increase accident risk besides helping criminals. As per Central Motor Vehicle Rule 100, vehicle manufacturers must ensure a minimum of 70 percent visual light transmission for front and rear windscreens, and at least 50 percent for side windows.

Telangana govt relieves IPS officers from service to join AP

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Saturday 22, released two IPS officers serving in Telangana to report to their home cadre in Andhra Pradesh (AP), following the orders from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The two officers are former Telangana DGP and chairman for road safety Anjani Kumar and director of police academy Abhilasha Bisht.

The MHA had also ordered the Karimnagar police commissioner Abhishek Mohanty to report to the Andhra Pradesh cadre.

During the bifurcation of Telangana from undivided Andhra Pradesh, a few IPS officers were allocated service in the AP cadre by the department of personnel and training.

In March 2016, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Hyderabad passed orders allocating Anjani Kumar, Abhilasha Bhisht, Abhishek Mohanty and IAS officers D Ronald Rose, Amrapali Katta, and seven other IAS officers to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Their allocation was challenged by the department of personnel and training, Government of India. However, they obtained a stay on their reallocation to AP.

This was undone on Friday, following the orders from the MHA, leaving the IPS officers with no other options than joining the AP cadre to continue their civil service career.

SLBC tunnel roof collapse: KTR, Harish Rao slam Telangana govt for inaction

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) and senior leader Harish Rao called out the Telangana government for its inaction over the roof collapse in the tunnel of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project in Nagarkurnool district earlier in the day.

Stating there is still no clarity on the issue and the rescue operations were delayed for a long time, KTR called the incident a failure of the Congress government.

“Such a series of incidents is happening due to the collusion with contractors, the evasion of supervision in the hunt for commissions, and the complete compromise on quality standards. If anyone is trapped inside in this roof collapse incident, rescue operations should be carried out on a war footing to bring them out safely,” he said.

He demanded the state government stop hiding the matter under the carpet and conduct a fair investigation into what led to the tunnel roof collapsing.

“The government, which hid the facts to protect the contractor in the Sunkishala accident, should at least conduct a transparent investigation into the SLBC incident and reveal the causes of the accident,” he said.

Harish demands inquiry by NDSA

Terming the SLBC tunnel roof collapse as a reflection of the state government’s inefficiency and inability, Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao echoed KTR’s statements and demanded an immediate inquiry by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA).

He accused the state government of taking no precautionary measures despite knowing that the earth was falling little by little in the tunnel for the past four days.

He stated on X that it came to his notice that some of the workers trapped inside were seriously injured and that there could be more workers trapped inside.
