Telangana govt to convene all-party meet on delimitation

CM Revanth orders mining officials to curb illegal sand transportation.

Hyderabad: The Congress government in Telangana on Thursday said it would organise an all-party meeting on delimitation of parliamentary constituencies to ensure that the state does not suffer any injustice in the exercise.

Briefing reporters late on Thursday after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy claimed the NDA government at the Centre intends to hurt the south through delimitation of constituencies.

The number of constituencies in south India should increase on a pro rata basis, the way they may increase in the north, he said.

The proposed all-party meeting would be led by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and senior Congress leader and former minister K Jana Reddy.

Srinivas Reddy, however, did not specify when the proposed all-party meeting would be convened.

The Telangana government’s decision to conduct the all-party meeting came a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin held a similar all-party meet on the issue of delimitation.

Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the Cabinet meeting approved a draft bill to increase reservations for backward classes to 42 per cent, which would be passed in the Assembly.

The 42 per cent quota for backward classes was an election promise of the Congress.

The Congress government recently conducted a caste survey, an election promise of party leader Rahul Gandhi, to increase quotas for backward classes.

Srinivas Reddy said the Cabinet also decided to make a legislation on Scheduled Caste (SC) categorisation in the Assembly soon.

Last month, the state government accepted three key recommendations of the judicial commission appointed by it for the implementation of SC categorisation, while rejecting the panel’s other suggestion to exempt the ‘creamy layer’ from reservations.

Srinivas Reddy also said the Cabinet decided to make grand arrangements for the Miss World pageant to be held in Telangana from May 7-31.

The Cabinet is keen to ensure that there are no shortcomings in the arrangements for the guests, who would come from about 140 countries to attend the pageant, the minister said.

Srinivas Reddy also said that a governing board, similar to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) of Lord Venkateswara temple, would be appointed for the Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Yadadri near Hyderabad.

Additionally, he noted that EPFO account-holders can now claim their funds from any branch.

Union minister G Kishan Reddy mentioned the separation of EPFO offices for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh following their bifurcation.

He stated that all EPFO claims are being settled within three days as per Central government guidelines.

Addressing concerns about the Siddipet district PF office, Mandaviya assured that it would remain operational.

Hyderabad: The Telangana ASHA workers Union staged a protest at Harihara Kala Bhavan in Hyderabad under the auspices of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), highlighted several key demands, including the removal of GPS surveillance on ASHA workers and the implementation of a fixed monthly wage of Rs 18,000.

The union representatives submitted a memorandum to Dr. Venkati, the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) of Hyderabad, detailing their demands.

These included provision of Provident Fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) benefits, job security, holidays on Sundays and festivals, payment of pending bills, maternity leaves, quality uniforms, and reduction of workload.

The Kerala government has faced criticism for its response to the protests, including attempts to train health volunteers as a potential replacement for striking workers.

Centre's new IT Bill poses threat to digital privacy: KTR

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Smaithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Friday, March 7 said that the Centre’s new Income Tax Bill poses a threat to digital privacy of citizens.

KTR said that the new Income Tax Bill seeks to grant IT officials unchecked access to social media, emails, and online trading accounts under the guise of tax scrutiny. He opined that the unprecedented access to virtual spaces could lead to misuse, harassment and mass surveillance.

The former Telangana minister added that With financial data already subject to multiple reporting mechanisms, this draconian intrusion tramples on citizens’ fundamental rights and digital privacy.

“Who will hold officials accountable if there is any misuse of this overreaching provision?” the Sircilla MLA asked in a post on X. He demanded answers from the Prime Minister and Union finance minister regarding the issue.

Income Tax Bill 2025

Introduced in the Parliament in February this year by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the new Income Tax Bill proposes granting tax officials access to citizens’ digital and financial spaces. This includes granting access to officials to one’s emails, social media accounts, bank details, and trading transactions without a warrant or prior notice, merely on the basis of suspicion.

Following the introduction of the bill, the Congress party expressed concerns framing it as a tool for the government to intrude into personal lives and stifle dissent.

The new bill empowers income tax officials to check emails of a person based on a suspicion of undisclosed income or assets. A specific provision in the bill grants authorities the power to surpass access codes and gain entry to protected spaces, either physically or digitally, when deemed necessary.

Delimitation history of Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, its assembly segments

Top 5 cities for women in India: Where does Hyderabad rank?

Hyderabad: The delimitation has changed the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency multiple times by including new assembly constituencies and excluding some older ones.

Currently, there are seven assembly segments in the Hyderabad parliamentary constituency.

Delimitation history of Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency

When the first delimitation was implemented in 1952, there were seven assembly segments, namely Mushirabad, Somajiguda, Chadarghat, Begum Bazar, Shalibanda, Karwan, and Hyderabad City.

Over the years, it changed, and now Malakpet, Karwan, Goshamahal, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura, and Bahadurpura assembly segments form the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

Following is the delimitation history of the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

Concerns of southern states

It is feared that southern states will lose out in the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies due to the shrinking population.

An exercise to redraw the parliamentary constituencies based on population is due in 2026. This will increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 753. Regional parties in the South fear that this will result in a huge jump in the number of seats in states with higher populations, while the increase in the South will be marginal.

Leaders of these parties feel that southern states are being punished for the effective implementation of family planning over the last few decades, as states with a higher density of population will have greater representation in the Lok Sabha.

As delimitation is due in 2026, the assembly segments in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency may also change.

Singer Kalpana hospitalized in Hyderabad after suicide attempt

Hyderabad: Popular singer Kalpana Raghavendar, who was recently rushed to a hospital after being found unconscious in her residence in Hyderabad, has now put out a video clip in which she has made it clear that she was saved only because of the timely efforts of her husband Prasad Prabhakar.

The well-known singer, who has sung thousands of songs in both Tamil and Telugu, was recently found in an unconscious state at her home in Hyderabad and rushed to a hospital where she is currently recuperating. A section of the media had claimed that the singer had attempted suicide.

In the video clip that Kalpana Raghavendar put out, the singer said, “There is a wrong piece of information that is being circulated in the media about me and my husband. I am putting out this video to provide clarity on the issue.”

“First of all, I have to say I am 45 years old. At this age, I am doing my Ph.D, and LLB. Both of these are due to my husband’s encouragement. I am also doing a lot of other things. For today’s musical industry, I am trying to update myself. I am trying to do different types of concerts. Because of all this, I have had stress and was unable to sleep,” the singer informed.

Stating that she had been struggling for several nights, unable to sleep, Kalpana said she chose to go to a doctor for the treatment of insomnia.

“He(the doctor) prescribed certain drugs for me. On that particular day, the dosage I took of a certain prescribed drug was slightly more. As a result, I became unconscious,” she said, trashing reports that claimed that she had attempted suicide.

“The only reason I am sitting before you and talking is because of the efforts of my husband. At the right time, he took the help of the police. He immediately informed them and the media. They really rescued me is what I should say. Please don’t trust any wrong news. There are no personal issues between us. By God’s grace, the best thing that has happened to me is my husband Prasad Prabhakar. I am so blessed to have him in my life. The next best thing is my daughter Daya Prasad,” she clarified.

She again reiterated, “I have no personal issues. By God’s grace, I am well and happy. My family is well. I faced some difficulty because of health issues. I will return to normalcy very soon and I shall be there to entertain you all with my singing. I really need to thank the media and the police and everybody from the music fraternity. I am so grateful to all the love and support you people have given to me and my family,” the singer signed off.

Meet the man behind Hyderabad’s beloved Ramzan drink, Rooh Afza

Meet the man behind Hyderabad's favourite Ramzan drink, Rooh Afza

When the scorching summer heat comes mixed with the long hours of fasting in Ramadan, one drink remains a staple in nearly every Hyderabadi household- Rooh Afza. Its ruby-red hue, fragrant aroma and cooling sweetness make it an instant refresher, a tradition passed down through generations. While the drink is a household name, only a few know the story of how it came to be. Who created this iconic sharbat and how did it become such an essential part of Ramzan? Read on as Siasat.com dives into the story behind Hyderabad‘s favourite Ramzan drink.

The evolution of Rooh Afza

It all started in 1907 when Old Delhi’s Unani doctor Hakim Abdul Majeed tried to combat the problem of people dying of intense heatstrokes. Instead of prescribing medicines, he came up with a cooling concoction comprising portulaca seeds, chicory, grapes, coriander, rose petals and other fragrant flowers. This creation quickly became popular for its ability to fight heatstrokes and dehydration and thus, Rooh Afza was born.

An old Rooh Afza ad (Image Source: Interesting Facts of our Universe/Facebook)

The drink went on to quench the thirst of many not just as a medicine but as a popular summer drink as well and by the 1940s, it had become a must in every house of pre-partition India. However, the partition of India in 1947 marked a turning point for Rooh Afza. While Hakim’s elder son remained in Delhi, his younger son migrated to Pakistan and set up Hamdard Pakistan, ensuring that the drink stayed on both sides of the border.

Today, it is produced in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, with each region embracing it as a symbol of their cultural and culinary heritage. In fact, in Pakistan, it is even termed the ‘Summer Drink of the East’ and is vitally associated with the country’s national identity.

Rooh Afza’s Legacy

According to Hamdard Laboratories Bangladesh’s website, the name ‘Rooh Afza’ is inspired by a character in the book Masnavi Gulzar-e-Nasim, which was first published in 1254 by Pandit Deya Shankar Nasim. In the story, Rooh Afza is the daughter of the King of Firdaus (Heaven), symbolizing purity and rejuvenation- qualities that align perfectly with the drink’s purpose.

The packaging of Rooh Afza plays an integral role in its popularity. In its early days, the syrup was sold in used bottles of wines of any size, colour and shape which could be easily available. Later, uniform white bottles, known as ‘pole bottles’ were introduced. Interestingly, Rooh Afza is the first sharbat for which the white bottles were obtained.
