‘Ungli diye toh haath pakad lete’: 10 Killer Hyderabadi muhavreys you must know

$
0
0

Only a real Hyderabadi knows these 10 muhavreys- Do You?

While Hyderabad is often pigeonholed as just a food capital, famous for its biryani, haleem, and Irani Chai, another flavour defines this city just as strongly: its language.

Step into a local market or hop into an auto and you are bound to hear words like “kaiku”, “nakko”, “haula”, “kate” and more. Often mistaken as funny expressions or slang by outsiders, these words are actually part of a living, breathing language called Dakhni. And tucked within this rich language are muhavrey– idiomatic phrases that carry humor, sarcasm and history all at once.

Further into this article, we will explore some of the most popular Hyderabadi muhavrey but first, it is important to understand the language they come from. Siasat.com explore what exactly is Dakhni and how it evolved into the Hyderabadi we speak today.

What is Dakhni Urdu and Hyderabadi?

Contrary to popular belief, Dakhni is not a dialect of Urdu but is a unique language in its own right. As the name suggests, it is rooted in the Deccan region and is a blend of Dehlavi (Old Urdu or Hindvi), Marathi, Telugu and Kannada. It was a dominant language of Deccan, especially in Hyderabad and Bijapur, where it thrived as both a spoken and literary language in the 15th century.

So how did this regional language transform into the Hyderabadi speech we speak today? While Dakhni was once the primary language of poets and scholars like Mohd Quli Qutb Shah (1580-1611), who is regarded as one of the earliest contributors to Dakhni poetry, the standardized Urdu we are familiar with today didn’t take shape until much later, in the Mughal courts of Delhi in the 17th century. After the fall of the Golconda Sultanate and the rise of the Nizams in Hyderabad, Persian and later standard Urdu became the official languages, relegating Dakhni to mostly spoken usage.

What is fascinating is that the essence of Dakhni Urdu continues to live on in Hyderabadi speech. Words from Marathi, Telugu, and Kannada still pepper daily conversations, making Hyderabadi Urdu not just a version of standard Urdu, but a language in its own right, rich with history, humour, and local flair.

Hyderabadi muhavrey are more than just funny phrases- they are cultural artefacts, packed with wit, emotion and sometimes biting sarcasm. These idioms reflect the lived realities of Hyderabadis: their humour, their no-nonsense attitude and their love for expressive storytelling.

Here are some of the most popular Hyderabadi muhavrey still heard in the gullies of Old City or said by nani dadis at family dawats:

1. Khile toh phool nai toh matthi dhool

This is used to describe people who either open up very well or become extreme introverts.

2. Nai mamu se nakte mamu behtar

Something is better than nothing- even if it is not perfect.

3. Chau raste ko rasta nai batana

Don’t try to teach or guide someone who is more experienced than you.

4. Waqat na sakhat buddhi chadi taqat

Used for when someone does or say something at the wrong time.

5. Gud khaate gulgule se parhez karte

Used to point out the hypocrisy of people who pretend to be choosy but are clearly not.

6. Kaam ke na kaach ke dushman anaaj ke

Said for someone who is lazy and just a burden without helping anyone.

7. Degcha thanda chamcha garam

Used when people who aren’t directly involved in a fight get more worked up than the person at the centre of it.

8. Chaar aane ke bandar ko baara aane ki rassi

Said about people or situations that are not worth much but are treated with exaggerated importance.

9. Baasi kadhi main ubal aana

Used to describe someone who suddenly gets excited after being passive for a long time.

10. Ungli diye toh haath pakad lete

Said when someone takes undue advantage of a small favour or gesture- give them an inch and they take a mile.

What are some of your favourite Hyderabadi muhavrey? Comment below.

Hyderabad: Two girls, aged four and five respectively, died of “suffocation” after accidentally getting locked inside a car in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district on Monday, police said.

The incident happened in Damargidda village at around 2 PM when the girls, both cousins, while playing, got into the car parked near their relative’s house, they said.

Neither their parents nor their other family members were aware that the children had got locked inside the car, police said, based on preliminary information.

It was after about 30-45 minutes, they found the girls unconscious in the car and immediately shifted them to a government hospital, where they were declared brought dead, a police official at Chevella police station said.

The children, along with their parents, had come to their relative’s house in Damargidda to attend a marriage alliance ceremony.

Police, after learning about the incident, rushed to the hospital, but the parents had taken away the bodies to their respective native villages, the official said. No complaint has been lodged so far in connection with the incident, police said.

‘Shawarma Puri’, a new dish on Hyderabad’s street food menu

Hyderabad's street food gets a new twist with Shawarma Puri

Hyderabad‘s love for Arabic food is no surprise. From mandi to kunafa, every Arabian dish is a hit in this city and shawarma is the most loved street food. Over the years, shawarma has gone through various transformations in Hyderabad, from changing its classic recipe to its preparation style. But now, one restaurant has taken the innovation game up a notch by serving shawarma inside pani puri shells.

Exotic Grill, an eatery at Tarnaka is behind Shawarma Puri—a crunchy, bite-sized twist that fuses Middle Eastern spice with Indian street food flair. Think crispy golgappa shells stuffed with juicy shawarma meat, creamy garlic mayo, and crunchy veggies. It’s an unexpected combination that perfectly captures Hyderabad’s ever-evolving food culture.

Fusion foods are the new normal in Hyderabad

In recent years, the city has become a playground for culinary experiments. Fusion dishes are no longer rare gimmicks—they’re a trend. From haleem dosa to chocolate maggi, and now Shawarma Puri, Hyderabad’s street food scene is all about reimagining familiar flavours in unfamiliar forms.

Interestingly, Shawarma Puri isn’t entirely new to Hyderabad. It first went viral a couple of years ago when a few food stalls introduced the concept. Back then, it received bad reactions—some foodies dismissed it as a gimmick, while others weren’t ready for such a bold mashup.

While the future of this new Shawarma Puri is yet to be seen, one thing is clear: fusion is here to stay. As Hyderabad’s food culture continues to evolve, eateries big and small are embracing experimentation—mixing tradition with trend, nostalgia with novelty. And whether every dish becomes a hit or not, the willingness to try something different is what keeps the city’s culinary spirit alive.

So don’t be surprised if your next plate of biryani comes with a twist—or a taco shell.

Modi slams Telangana govt over Kancha Gachibowli land row, calls Congress model a ‘lie’

Yamunanagar: In an apparent reference to the recent controversy surrounding the 400-acres of Kancha Gachibowli land near the University of Hyderabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, April 14, lashed out at the Telangana government accusing it of destroying forest and not promising election promises.

Addressing a gathering in Haryana, the prime minister said, “The government is busy destroying jungles through bulldozers, causing damage to nature, endangering animals. This is the working style of the Congress.”

“One side is the Congress model which has been proved a complete lie and which only thinks about power while the BJP model is based on truth and working on the path shown by Ambedkar,” accused Modi.

He further attacked the Congress rules states saying there were blackouts under the Grand Old Party rule before 2014. However, post 2014, India’s power production has doubled and it is now exporting electricity, PM Modi claimed.

“What is happening in Congress-ruled states. A complete betrayal of the public. In neighbouring Himachal, the public is upset. All development and public welfare works have come to a standstill,” he said.

“In Congress-ruled Karnataka, from electricity to milk and bus fare to seeds, everything is getting expensive. The government there is imposing different types of taxes which has led to inflation in the state,” he alleged, adding, “Karnataka has become number one in corruption.”

Extending greetings to the people on B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, Modi said his government is guided by Baba Saheb’s vision, which, he said, “is showing direction to us in the journey of Viksit Bharat”.

On Monday, Prime Minister Modi laid the the foundation stone of an 800-MW ultra-supercritical modern thermal power unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant in Yamunanagar. The thermal power unit, spread across 233 acres and worth around Rs 8,470 crore, is expected to become operational by March 2029. It will significantly boost Haryana’s energy self-sufficiency and provide uninterrupted power supply across the state.

Earlier, state-owned BHEL had bagged the order to set up an 800 MW plant which will be Haryana’s first ultra-supercritical technology-based power project.

The unit shall be established adjacent to the existing 2×300 MW units, currently operational at Yamunanagar. The plant, slated for completion by 2027, will have an annual production capacity of 2,600 metric tonnes and will help in effective organic waste management while contributing to clean energy production and environmental conservation, a statement said.

Project Mitra launched to address mental health issues of Telangana Gurukul students

TGSWREIS launches Project Mitra to address students' mental health issues.

Hyderabad: In a bid to address the rising incidents of mental health crises among adolescents studying in social welfare Gurukuls, the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) unveiled a transformative initiative called ‘Project Mitra’ across its network of 268 residential schools.

Project Mitra aims to provide structured psychological support within the school ecosystem, foster emotional well-being, familial bonds, grievance redressal, and a suggestion platform among students from underprivileged backgrounds.

The launch of Project Mitra was held at the Centre of Excellence (COE) for Boys and Girls in Gowlidoddi on Monday, April 14.

Project Mitra introduces card-driven AI inbuilt telephone boxes in every Gurukul school. Each school/ college will now house 10 to 15 dedicated telephones, proportionate to the student strength.

Four students will share one calling card, through which they can make unlimited free calls to pre-registered numbers of one parent/guardian (number is registered with the consent of the parent/guardian).

The fifth number in the calling card is the AI-driven chat box number where students can register their grievances, suggestions, or ask for help.

Importantly, the system restricts outgoing calls strictly to registered numbers, ensuring safety and preventing misuse, while facilitating warm and uninterrupted conversations with parents.

In addition, every card includes a helpline number, a direct line for students to report academic, emotional, or logistical concerns anonymously and seek timely support. The AI program will either prompt a message to the concerned authority or connect to the call center established at the head office of TGSWREIS.

“Many students, often far from home for the first time, struggle with homesickness. With Phone Mitra, they can now speak to their parents whenever they feel the need, creating a psychological safety net,” said Alagu Varshini, secretary of TGSWREIS.

“This isn’t just about technology. It’s about restoring connection, compassion and calm to young hearts,” she added.

The initiative also trains headmasters and select teaching staff to become “Mental Health Warriors” and compassionate counsellors equipped to identify emotional distress, instill resilience, and guide students toward safe mental spaces.

Structured counselling sessions will be provided by trained professionals for students grappling with personal, academic, or psychological struggles.

The programme is designed to nurture emotional intelligence and prevent tragic outcomes like student suicides. By enabling timely intervention, the project aims to cultivate an atmosphere of empathy, self-worth, and academic enthusiasm.

TGSWREIS now plans to accelerate the implementation of these programmes in all Gurukul institutions statewide, ensuring no child is left unheard or unsupported, targeting to establish this calling facility by the third week of April.

Telangana govt launches Bhu Bharathi portal

The image displays Chief minister A Revanth Reddy, along with his deputy Bhatti Vikramarka launching the the Bhu Bharathi portal at Shilpakala Vedika in Hyderabad on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy, along with his deputy Bhatti Vikramarka, launched the Bhu Bharathi portal at Shilpakala Vedika in Hyderabad on Monday, April 14.

“The Bhu Bharathi revenue portal will provide permanent solutions to land issues through a dispute-free revenue policy that would benefit 69 lakh farmers across the state,” the chief minister said while addressing revenue officials.

“Additionally, the Bhudhar card will be issued to the land owners, which will have all the information related to the land,” he said.

At a jibe thrown at the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government, the chief minister alleged that revenue officials would often take the hit on mistakes made by the previous regime.

Recalling fatal incidents related to the department after the Dharani portal was introduced by the BRS, CM Revanth said, “Dharani portal had become a nightmare for the people. But the BRS government tried to blame their mistakes on the revenue officials by portraying them as demons. In every department, there will be some bad apples. But blaming the entire system for some people’s mistakes is wrong. The revenue officials have been doing the same job for 65 years. When there was no such issue then, how did they suddenly become guilty of wrongdoing?”

The chief minister ensured that his government was against the policy of portraying the revenue officials as wrongdoers. He urged revenue officials to go to the villages and resolve the land issues by holding praja darbars and revenue awareness programmes.

He, however, stated that strict action will be taken against officials found to have committed any wrongdoing.

Elaborating on the Bhu Bharathi revenue portal, state revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy informed that a pilot project has been rolled out in four mandals – Khammam, Mulugu, Kodangal, and Kamareddy districts. “Mandal Revenue Officers (MROs) will visit every revenue village in these mandals to resolve all pending land-related issues by May 1,” he said.

From May 1, one mandal in each district will be selected for a similar exercise. Starting June 2, the process will be expanded to cover all remaining mandals across the state, with MROs addressing land issues in every revenue village.

Bhatti Vikramarka announced that assignment committees in the districts which used to oversee the distribution of land to the poor, but were rendered defunct for 10 years under the BRS’ rule, will again be restored.

“Steps will be taken to issue pattas to those who have been tilling the land for generations and are eligible to be owners of those lands,” Bhatti assured.

Focus on Bhu Bharathi, Indiramma houses: Telangana CM to collectors

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy ordered district collectors to provide special emphasis to the newly launched Bhu Bharathi revenue portal, Indiramma housing scheme, and address the drinking water crisis in villages across Telangana.

In a meeting held at the Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resource Development Corporation (MCHRD) on Monday, April 14, the chief minister instructed all collectors to carry out an intensified awareness program at the field level on the Bhu Bharathi portal.

The collectors were asked to attend the meetings in every mandal and address the grievances by clarifying the doubts raised by farmers in simple language. They were told to educate villagers on the functioning of the Bhu Bharathi portal.

He instructed the collectors to organise the pilot project meetings at Maddur in Narayanapet district, Nelakondapalli in Khammam district, Lingampeta in Kamareddy district, and Venkatapur in Mulugu district.

“Collectors should attend the meetings at the respective mandal headquarters involving the revenue staff in every village,” he said.

Special officers in every constituency for Indiramma houses

On the Indiramma housing scheme, the chief minister said that the mandal level committees needed to examine the list approved by the village level Indiramma houses committees, and then the list will be sent to the district in-charge minister, who will finalise the list of beneficiaries.

CM Revanth instructed chief secretary A Santhi Kumari to appoint a special officer for each assembly constituency to monitor the implementation of the scheme regularly. The special officer will coordinate the Indiramma committees, mandal committees, collectors and the in-charge minister.

He said that nobody needed to succumb to any pressure at any stage in the allotment of the houses and action will be taken against the mandal-level committee and special officer, if houses were allotted to ineligible people.

Since 3,500 houses were allotted to each constituency, the chief minister suggested that houses should be allotted to the respective villages on the basis of population, and that rationality should be followed in that regard.

He also ordered that the construction of houses needed to happen in the specified time frame and that collectors needed to pay special attention to that.

Measures to address drinking water supply in Summer

The chief minister directed the irrigation, rural water supply and energy departments to work in coordination to address the drinking water problem this summer. He asked the collectors to monitor drinking water resources and supply in each village through a dashboard.

Stressing the need for an alternative plan on resolving any problem which may arise, the chief minister pointed out that many villages didn’t have a drinking water supply pipeline, and taps were also not fitted in many houses. “The district authorities should prepare plans and solve drinking water problems by considering all these challenges,” he said, also mentioning that special attention needed to be paid to tribal habitations.

The chief minister said that funds have already been allocated for laying drinking water supply pipelines, repair of motors and boreholes, noting that more funds will be released if necessary. He instructed the officials to inform of any breakdown in the drinking water supply in Hyderabad and other municipal areas, and asked them to make arrangements to resolve the problems on a war footing.

Indian low-cost airline to launch direct flights to Fujairah

Hyderabad: A doctor saved a 74-year-old passenger aboard an Indigo flight from Delhi to Hyderabad airport.

Dr Preethi Reddy, a general physician and managing director of Mallareddy Vishwa Vidhyapeet, sprang into action when the elderly traveler suddenly fell critically ill at 39000 feet.

Emergency at high altitude

The passenger who was flying alone showed alarming symptoms—drowsiness, drooling, loss of bladder control and unresponsiveness. Dr Reddy quickly assessed his weak pulse and dangerously low blood pressure.

Without hesitation, she performed CPR and revived him within minutes. Upon regaining consciousness, the man revealed his history of hypertension and a past cardiac angioplasty.

Indigo flight crew coordinated with Hyderabad airport’s command center

Using the aircraft’s medical kit, Dr Reddy administered critical care while the Indigo crew coordinated with Hyderabad airport’s command center.

An ambulance, wheelchair and emergency doctor were arranged for immediate assistance upon landing.

The collaborative effort between the doctor, cabin crew and fellow passengers ensured the traveler stabilized before reaching Hyderabad airport.

The Indigo team and passengers lauded Dr Reddy’s swift response on the flight to Hyderabad airport.

The move follows government approval and aims to alleviate the workload on existing employees.

The announcement was made during the Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations at RTC Kalabhavan in Hyderabad’s Bagh Lingampally, where Sajjanar emphasized the corporation’s commitment to staff welfare and operational efficiency.

BRS MLA demands CBI probe into Group 1 recruitment process

Telangana HC orders cops to return BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy's phone

BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Telangana Group-1 recruitment process, citing procedural lapses and suspected favoritism.

Addressing media at Telangana Bhavan on Monday, April 14, Reddy accused the state government of mishandling the exam, which has been mired in controversy since its inception.

Reddy highlighted that separate hall tickets were issued for prelims and mains—a move he termed “unprecedented in India’s exam history.”

He argued that this discrepancy sowed confusion among candidates and created opportunities for malpractice.

“This is where the irregularities began,” he stated, linking the anomaly directly to the subsequent controversy.

The MLA pointed out an inconsistency in the results: while 21,093 candidates appeared for the mains, results were declared for 21,103 candidates.

“Where did these 10 extra candidates come from? The government must explain this to Telangana’s youth,” Reddy demanded.

He emphasized that such discrepancies undermine the credibility of the recruitment process.

Reddy alleges bias in candidate selection

Reddy further alleged bias in candidate selection, citing data from specific exam centers.

He noted that only 69 candidates were selected from centers where 10,000 candidates wrote the exam, while 74 candidates were chosen from two centers with just 1,494 test-takers.

“Centers 18 and 19 alone accounted for a disproportionate number of selections,” he claimed, suggesting possible manipulation.

The BRS leader accused the government of favoring politically connected individuals. He cited the example of a Congress leader’s relative securing the top rank in the ST category and highlighted that seven out of nine Urdu-medium candidates were selected.

“How can such a high success rate for Urdu-medium candidates be justified? This reeks of favoritism,” Reddy asserted.

Reddy also criticized the BJP for its silence on the issue.

“When paper leaks under BRS rule led to exam cancellations, BJP leaders were vocal. Why are they silent now? Have Congress and BJP struck a deal?” he questioned.

Hyderabad: A 17-year-old migrant worker reportedly killed a 70-year-old woman in Hyderabad’s Kushaiguda and recorded a video of the corpse.

The incident occurred on April 11 and was reported on April 14 after the accused shared the video with the victim’s relative in Bengaluru. Kushaiguda police shifted the body for postmortem on Monday and registered a murder case.

The victim was identified as Kamala Devi, a native of Rajasthan. Over 30 years ago, Kamala, along with her husband, migrated to Hyderabad in search of a livelihood. Kamala’s husband died 15 years ago, and she was staying alone in their house at Krishna Nagar.

According to the Kushaiguda police, Kamla inherited a few shops from her husband. The shops generated a rent of 50,000 per month. The accused used to work at one of the victim’s shops and help her with daily chores.

Recently, Kamla argued with the accused and allegedly constantly abused him. On the night of April 11, the teenager went to Kamala’s house.

At 11.30 pm, he attacked her on the head with an iron rod and killed her.

Subsequently, he strangled her with a sari and tried hanging her body from the ceiling fan. The police said the accused recorded a video of himself dancing while Kamla’s body was dangling.

The incident came to light when the accused himself called a relative of the victim who lives in Bengaluru on the night of April 13. The relative did not believe the murder claims of the accused.

Upon being alerted, the Kushaiguda police broke open the door and retrieved Kamla’s decomposed body.

The body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem. The Kushaiguda police registered a case of murder, and an investigation has been initiated.

CSK's Shaik Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra batting together during IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Hyderabad: A 20-year-old batsman Shaik Rasheed who started his journey from gully cricket in Hyderabad made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Monday.

The young cricketer opened alongside Rachin Ravindra against Lucknow and scored 27 off 19 balls.

From Hyderabad’s Dilsukhnagar streets to cricket stardom

Rasheed’s love for cricket began at just eight years old in Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad where he played gully matches before joining Sportive Cricket Club in the HCA League.

Later, his family moved to Guntur. Despite financial struggles, his father’s unwavering support kept his dreams alive.

A pivotal moment in his career came during the 2022 U-19 World Cup when VVS Laxman advised him to visualize bowlers and practice shadow batting – a technique that sharpened his mental game.

In 2024, he scored 203 in Ranji Trophy against Hyderabad.

Shaik Rasheed’s IPL debut for CSK

On Monday, CSK finally brought their IPL 2025 campaign back on track with a commanding five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 30 played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium.

In the match, LSG scored 166 in 20 overs. CSK chased a tricky target of 167 on a slow surface.

The chase began with a surprise change. Shaik Rasheed made his IPL debut and opened with Rachin Ravindra in place of the out-of-form Devon Conway.

Rasheed made an immediate impact by scoring 27 off 19 with confident strokes including a stylish flick and a powerful pull. Alongside Rachin Ravindra, who smashed 37 off 22, the pair added 50 in just 4.2 overs. That flying start tilted the momentum CSK’s way.
