Hyderabad collector Harichandana addressing students

Hyderabad: To ensure student safety and awareness across schools and colleges in Hyderabad, the state government launched the Safety Club initiative at AV College in Hyderabad on Monday, July 7.

The program aims to create a holistic approach to student resilience and responsibility, focusing on four key areas: physical safety, cyber safety, substance abuse prevention, and mental health and emotional well-being.

The programme consists of a school principal as chairperson, a teacher as convener, a parent volunteer as safety guide, and student volunteers as safety advocates.

The Safety Club will help create various campaigns, including a drug-free campus drives, mental health week programs, safety skills workshops, peer ambassador programs, parent cafés and digital detox toolkits and legal awareness and rights sessions

Hyderabad collector Harichandana encouraged students to develop strength and resilience for a better future. “This program encourages student voice, strengthens civic sense, and helps build a generation that is alert and accountable. Such models must be scaled across all schools/colleges,” she addressed a large gathering of students.

“This is not about policing young people, it is about empowering them, to create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and strong – physically, emotionally, and digitally. The Safety Club provides the right tools to respond, report, and resist. Our role is not just to protect, but to prepare,” said Shivapalli, the Central Zone DCP

Jubilee Hills by-election: Congress ticket to minority face unlikely

$

Image of BJP leader Maganti Gopinath and Mohd Azharuddin.

Hyderabad: The ruling Congress is unlikely to give the ticket for the Jubilee Hills by-poll to a Muslim candidate, including former Indian cricket team captain Mohd Azharuddin. Party leaders said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may polarise minority votes which may help the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to win.

In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, Azharuddin was the Congress candidate. He lost to BRS leader Maganti Gopinath, whose death recently is what has necessitated the upcoming by-election.  Gopinath secured 80,549 votes, while Congress candidate and former Indian cricket team captain Mohd Azharuddin came second with 64,212 votes. BJP’s Lanka Deepak Reddy also managed to secure over 25000 votes, while AIMIM candidate Rasheed Farazuddin came fourth with 7848 votes.

“A Muslim candidate may not get the seat for the Jubilee Hills by-election as the BJP may use that to polarise it. There are about 1.3 lakh votes of Muslim votes, out of which maybe 45000 to 50000 people may vote. And to beat the BRS we need about 80000 to 90000 votes. If there any polarisation then the Muslim candidates will lose. Azharuddin is a different case as he is more of a celebrity but he has no connect on the ground,” a Congress leader who worked in the constituency told Siasat.com

He added that the Congress needs a pubic friendly candidate to win the Jubilee Hills by-election. “Moreover, locals prefer a person from the area itself. If Azhar loses for a second time his career will be over. He is a celebrity and not a politician,” the Congress leader added.

While parties have not formally announced their candidates for the Jubilee Hills by-election, Azharuddin has said that he is willing to contest. However Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Goud later clarified that the party will decide and take a call. Moreover, this time the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will also support the ruling Congress which is likely to help.

The AIMIM had supported the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which won the Jubilee Hills seat, in the December 2023 Assembly polls by putting up a candidate who drew a chunk of Muslim votes which would have otherwise gone to the Congress.

HYDRAA demolishes wall obstructing commute of 25,000 people in Hyderabad

$

The image shows the demolished compound wall built by a realtor in Nizampet municipality of Dundigal mandal in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

Hyderabad: In Hyderabad, there has been a trend over the last decade or so, where colonies (not gated communities) would build compound walls and gates, creating obstacles to the residents of other colonies in that area from commuting along that route which was previously used by them.

The Hyderabad Disaster Response Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) officials have recently demolished a compound walls that were blocking the residents of 10 colonies in the Nizampet municipality.

The commute between the Outer-Ring Road exit from Mallampet via Bachupally X Roads till Pragathi Nagar used to be just 3 km, which became 8 km after ‘Praneeth APR Pranav Antilia’ built a wall to prevent the outsiders from driving their vehicles, which their claimed, were moving from inside their gated community.

The residents of Mallampet had approached HYDRAA, requesting that if the realtor gave way to them, a 40-60 foot road that was previously operational, would once again come to use, reducing their commute time.

After examining the issue and investigating it, HYDRAA found that the layout was not a gated community as per the layout which Praneeth APR Pranav Antilia claimed, was approved by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA).

The various stakeholders in the matter expressed their concerns before HYDRAA in a meeting which was held between the petitioners and the realtors.

The residents living in Praneeth APR Pranav Antilia stated that due to the basthi people and residents of other colonies passing close to their homes, they were facing certain difficulties.

“When HYDRAA demolished the compound wall to give way to ten colonies/ Mallampet villagers (near Dundigal/ Mallampet/ Bachupally), they are alleging that HYDRAA is trying to benefit some real estate people. “Thousands of people in the locality will benefit with the removal of compound wall. The traffic in the Bachupally- Mallampet ( recently opened exit at ORR) will be decongested to a great extent. Some people in the layout are deliberately misleading the community to suit their own vested interests,” cautioned HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath.

Ranaganath cited the rule 7 of HMDA’s approval of final layout, where it has clearly been stated that “the applicant was not allowed to construct compound wall around the site and not to block the roads so as to provide access to the neighbouring lands.”

HYDRAA Prajavani complaints

During the Prajavani grievance redressal programme held at HYDRAA office at the Buddha Bhavan in Secunderabad on Monday, July 7, most of the complaints received by HYDRAA were concerning individuals and realtors occupying the roads, parks, and other lands that were located adjacent to their lands.

The residents of Gajularamaram lodged a complaint with HYDRAA, alleging that a plot’s owners had encroached upon a 30-foot road, in addition to their 7-acre layout having 102 plots.

The residents of Chengicherla village (now urban) under the Boduppal municipality, alleged encroachment of 1,800 sq yd area in survey numbers 114, 118, 120, 121 in Chinna Kranthi Colony.

This was the park designated for the residents of the colony.

The residents of Kothaguda village of Serilingampalli mandal in Rangareddy district alleged that the owners of Jubilee Garden Colony have illegally built a compound wall, with an intent to grab 14 guntas in survey number 30, and 1 acre and 2 guntas land in survey number 29, which they claimed as government land.

Similar complaints have come from other areas as well. A total of 49 complaints were received by HYDRAA during it’s weekly Prajavani held on Monday, July 7.

The complainants urged the HYDRAA to investigate and protect the government lands.

BJP slams Telangana govt for not demolishing Fatima Owaisi college

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramachander Rao has accused the government of applying ‘double standards’ in its demolition drives, highlighting the case of AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi run Fatima Owaisi Women’s college, on Salkam Cheruvu land.

Speaking to reporters at the BJP state office in Hyderabad on Monday, July 7, Rao said the government claims it cannot demolish the college, which reportedly educates 10,000 students, while thousands of poor families in the Musi river catchment areas of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts are facing demolition of their homes built on disputed land.

“Why is there one law for Akbaruddin and another for the poor?” Rao questioned. He warned that if the government does not take action against the college building, the BJP would step in to do so.

On the Jubilee Hills bypoll

Rao also spoke about the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election, describing it as a challenge the BJP is ready to take on.

He expressed confidence that the party would win a majority of seats in local body elections. He announced that a full state committee would be formed within 25 days after consultations with senior leaders, ensuring representation from all social groups.

Rao emphasised that there are no factions within the BJP and that the party would move forward united under the party line.

Fatima Owaisi college built within the FTL: HYDRAA chief

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has confirmed that Fatima Owaisi College in Bandlagunda was built within the Full Tank Level (FTL) of Suram Cheruvu (Salkam Cheruvu), according to initial findings. Yet, a decision on action is yet to come, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath said at a citizen interaction organized on X Spaces on Sunday, July 6.

“As per the initial probe and the papers available, it is established that the college is indeed situated on the FTL of the Hyderabad lake. The final notice is awaited,” said Ranganath.

The college, which is operated by a trust linked to the AIMIM, provides education to a large number of poor Muslim students in the Old City.

“We don’t see the party, but we see the social side. Asaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi’s college has educated over 10,000 poor Muslim students, from KG to PG. Quite a number of them study free of charge,” he added.

Hyderabad: Authorities neglect Old City religious sites’ cleanliness

Authorities neglect Old City religious sites' cleanliness.

Hyderabad: Authorities in the old city have failed to keep the surroundings of religious places clean and tidy.

Take the case of Masjid-e-Syed Ali, situated at Lal Darwaza, Gowlipura. Despite its significance, garbage is dumped daily right beside the mosque, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has not taken adequate measures to clear the waste promptly or install barriers to prevent further dumping.

“A handful of people visit the mosque daily for prayers, but they face significant difficulties entering and attending prayers due to the filth,” said Mohd Shukoor, a regular visitor.

The mosque is located in an area dominated by the majority community, leaving worshippers hesitant to voice complaints—either publicly or with the GHMC—for fear of unrest. “The police and GHMC must recognize the sensitivity of the issue and take immediate action,” urged Jameel, another worshipper.

While regular devotees continue visiting the mosque, Fridays see a notably larger crowd.

Residents have demanded that the GHMC place garbage bins at a distance from the mosque to prevent dumping near its gates. “The GHMC should install green curtains and warning signboards to deter littering,” suggested another visitor.

Bonalu

In view of the importance of the upcoming Bonalu festival, the Telangana government added it to the list of holidays for schools in Hyderabad and other districts of the state.

Telangana HC issues notices in Khajaguda govt land allotment case

Telangana High Court directs govt to ramp up RT-PCR testing

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Monday, July 7, issued notices to several private parties in connection with a petition filed by Congress MLAs challenging the lack of action regarding the allotment and ongoing constructions on 27.18 acres of government land in Survey No. 27 of Serilingampally mandal, Ranga Reddy district.

The petitioners—ruling party MLAs Anirudh Reddy, Yennam Srinivas Reddy, Muralinaik, and Kuchikulla Rajesh Reddy—filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) questioning the authorities’ inaction over the land allotment and subsequent constructions. The bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Justice Sujay Paul and Justice Yara Renuka, heard arguments on Monday.

Representing the petitioners, the advocate argued that according to the 1955-58 kasra pahani records (old Survey No. 117/3/1), the 27.18 acres in Survey No. 27 are classified as government poramboke land. The advocate further alleged that the survey number was altered and, based on a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ranga Reddy Collector, the GHMC granted construction permissions.

The petitioners also stated that, in line with previous court orders, they had submitted representations to the authorities on the 24th and 26th of last month.

After hearing the arguments, the bench directed that notices be issued to the respondents—including Sikander Khan, Salabat Khan, Pallavi, Beverly Hills Owners Welfare Society, Sohini Builders, and GPA holder Bandi Bindu—asking them to submit their evidence to the court within two weeks. The hearing was then adjourned.

Court upholds GHMC orders in Shaikpet building violations case

$

0

A Gavel

Hyderabad: A City Small Causes Court in Hyderabad has adjudicated that Net Net Ventures Private Limited committed multiple violations in the construction of a multi-storey commercial building at Nandagiri Hills, Shaikpet.

The court upheld the orders issued by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on January 24, which directed the developer to halt further work until all unauthorised constructions, those that deviated from the approved plan, were removed.

Net Net Ventures petition

Net Net Ventures had filed a petition in the City Small Causes Court challenging the GHMC’s stop-work order. In its defence, the company argued that it had purchased 4.748 acres in a 2012 HMDA auction and subsequently acquired a 455-square-yard plot in Jubilee Hills Society. It claimed to have obtained permissions for a cellar, green deck, five stilt floors, and a 13-storey structure, and that the GHMC’s order was based on complaints from neighbouring residents.

GHMC’s arguments

The GHMC, however, stated that it had issued a notice in 2022 after receiving complaints that the construction was not adhering to the approved plans. The corporation pointed out that the required 7 to 10-meter setback on the Nandagiri Hills side was not maintained. A Vigilance Department investigation submitted to the Municipal Administration chief secretary on June 18, 2024, found that Net Net Ventures had violated regulations at every stage and recommended strict action.

The GHMC argued that the developer repeatedly obtained court injunctions to continue construction, making it difficult to remove illegal structures once completed.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Chief Judge K Kush of the City Small Causes Court ruled that violations in Net Net Ventures’ construction were indeed established. The judgment noted that the developer had built a ramp on the vehicle access route and failed to provide the required setback.

The court emphasized that the building’s height had been altered contrary to the approved plan, and that, despite claims of rectifying the violations, the company had not physically removed the unauthorized structures. Photographic evidence submitted by the GHMC showed that the Nandagiri Hills site slopes down 100 to 200 meters, posing potential risks to the area. The Vigilance report from June 18, 2024, also established that the construction deviated from the sanctioned plan.

Court dismisses developer’s arguments

The court dismissed the developer’s argument that any violations could be rectified before the occupancy certificate was granted, stating that the violations were significant and ongoing. It further noted that if the construction had truly followed the rules, the developer could have requested an Advocate Commissioner’s inspection or submitted photographic evidence, which was not done. No proof was provided to the GHMC that the illegal structures had been removed.

The court clarified that, under GHMC law, the Commissioner or authorized officer can inspect and intervene at any stage if violations are detected, and that injunction orders cannot obstruct these duties.

The judge concluded that Net Net Ventures had filed the petition with malicious intent and without disclosing the full facts, and therefore, the court could not allow such a petition.

The court dismissed the petition, stating it could not interfere with the GHMC’s orders.

Batukamma Kunta lake restored

Hyderabad: A buried water body, forgotten for decades beneath layers of encroachment, is flowing once again. Batukamma Kunta, located in Amberpet, has been dramatically restored after it was rediscovered by the Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) during routine excavation work.

The revival of the lake has struck public imagination, with residents posting photos of pristine waters, green banks, and a freshly laid pathway around the revived site. The makeover is likely to transform the spot into a favorite among locals for morning strolls, families, and nature enthusiasts.

Social media users have shared several photos of the restored Lake with works underway for a walkway around it.

Unlike most of the city’s degraded lakes, which had been weakened due to dumping of garbage or sewage inflow, Batukamma Kunta’s vanishing was majorly due to encroachment and garbage dumping.

Year by year, it had been buried and constructed over, until HYDRAA engineers, when they were carrying out field surveys and excavation works, hit water just four feet below the ground level in early 2025.

Led by Commissioner AV Ranganath, HYDRAA launched a comprehensive restoration effort. The lake was excavated with the utmost care, and its historic contours traced and cleared of illegal encroachments. Natural flow and exit channels were restored. Stormwater and sewage pipes were re-routed to avoid future pollution.

Now, Batukamma Kunta is not only a restored lake, it’s an urban ecological restoration case study. Migratory birds and native waterflow have returned. Indigenous trees and flowering plants are being planted. A well-designed walking path now encircles the lake with seating and shaded areas.

About HYDRAA and lakes restored apart from Batukamma Kunta

HYDRAA was set up in 2024 as a special purpose entity to safeguard public assets, coordinate urban disaster response, and revive Hyderabad’s water commons. It has since embarked on the revival of various priority waterbodies, such as Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula Lake and Musi-adjacent catchments, through a mix of legal action, community outreach, and contemporary hydrological planning.

For those living in Amberpet, Batukamma Kunta’s return is symbolically very important. It restores not only water, but identity.

Hyderabad: The 125-year-old Kotwal House, also known as the old Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s office, has been fully restored after lying in neglect for years. The heritage structure was donated for the purpose by the sixth Nizam of the city, Nawab Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, also known as Asaf Jah VI, who ruled the erstwhile Hyderabad State from 1869 till 1911.

Pre-independence, the Kotwal or equivalent of the the Police Commissioner held the highest level of privileges looked upon with great respect and honour. According to Deccan Terrain & Co, run by Mi Khan, which restored the building, the police commissionerate system was established in the year 1271 1847 in Hyderabad.

The Kotwal House, or the Old Commissioner Office eventually became the deputy commissioner of police (south zone) office, and has since been that.

According to Deccan Terrain, the old Hyderabad police commissioner’s office has typical colonial style architecture (european), with main hall being in the centre with an attached veranda on the north and south side, and an arched portico overlooking the courtyard.

The structure has roman columns in the veranda adding glamour to the architecture. It also has a madras terrace, spanning around 4500 square feet, constructed in stone and lime masonry, raised on heavy stone plinth beams, all along the building divisions. The doorways and windows are stone arched making it sturdy without lintels.

The building was not in use for half a decade & termed inhabitable due to ageing and non-maintenance. Restoration began in 2023 when Hyderabad police commissioner CV Anand Mrsigned an agreement with Mr. Mir Khan, conservator in chief of Deccan Terrain Heritage, to build a detailed project report and conservation plan.
