KTR slams Revanth for ‘colluding’ with Naidu after CM’s no-show

KTR addresses a meeting at the Hyderabad Press Club

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Tuesday, July 8, alleged that Telangana is being run covertly by Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandra Babu Naidu.

Speaking at the Hyderabad Press Club, the former Telangana minster accused chief minister A Revanth Reddy of diverting water to Andhra Pradesh while farmers continue to suffer in Telangana.

“Water is being diverted to AP, funds are being diverted to Delhi, and the chief minister is on tour after handing over his duties to others,” KTR remarked. It is to be noted that Revanth was with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) earlier.

He further attacked Reddy saying, “Today we waited for the CM, but he did not show up. We are ready for a debate even if the CM picks the date and time of his choice.”

KTR said that the Congress’s betrayal of the people of Telangana is now exposed. He took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah, saying he failed to understand why they were in praise of Revanth Reddy.

“They say Revanth has turned Telangana into an ATM for Congress, but there is no investigation. Neither on Revanth nor on his ministers and his false promises,” KTR remarked.

He further said that the Telangana CM awarded his brother-in-law with a contract worth Rs 1100 crore. “When we raised a complaint regarding this to the Centre and sought an investigation into the matter, nothing happened,” he added.

KTR further criticised the Centre for not paying attention to Telangana despite a major mishap like the SLBC tunnel collapse.

It is to be noted that the Sircilla MLA along with other BRS members arrived at the Hyderabad Press Club at Somajiguda. Despite heavy security, KTR addressed the gathering at the Press Club.

Before arriving at the Press Club, KTR addressed the media at the Telangana Bhavan and said, “Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy could pick another date and time for a debate on farmer issues.”

On July 5, KTR accepted the Reddy’s challenge for a debate on issues related to farmers in Telangana. The former Telangana minister had set July 8 as the date for the debate at the Hyderabad Press Club.

“Previously too, Revanth Reddy said if he loses Kodangal he would quit politics. He forgot about the challenge in three months. Similarly, he said if the BRS wins the GHMC elections, he would quit politics, but that didn’t happen,” KTR said.

The former minister said that he doesn’t trust the CM and that’s why the BRS booked the Hyderabad Press Club. “We have a list of farmers from the CM’s constituency Kodangal along with their contact numbers. We are going to the Press Club,” KTR said.

The Sircilla MLA further said that even if any minister could come for a debate on behalf of the CM he is ready for it. “Since the chief minister challenged me, I though he would come for a debate but now I am told he is in Delhi. I am ready for a debate with any minister since it is important to talk about farmers in Telangana,” he added.

CM Revanth in Delhi

Telanagana chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday, July 7 left for 2-day tour of Delhi. The CM has gone to the capital to seek funds for various projects.

Projects including Regional Ring Road (RRR), Musi River rejuvenation, and Metro Rail expansion are pending in the state. The Telangana government has submitted a new comprehensive, detailed project report (DPR) for the consideration of the Central government, seeking its participation as a joint venture partner in the Rs 24,269-crore Metro Rail project. The new DPR was designed after making certain changes as sought by the Union urban development ministry.

Similarly, he would also meet various Union ministers and its key officials to explain the importance of the Musi river rejuvenation project.

Keeping in mind river beautification taken up by several countries, which he has visited, Revanth Reddy would lobby with Union ministers for getting approvals for the project that is to be constructed in a phased manner.

Hyderabad’s best-kept secret: Biryani tastes better at weddings

Hyderabad's best-kept secret: Biryani tastes better at weddings

In Hyderabad, biryani is not just a dish- it is tradition, pride and celebration on a plate. It is the centrepiece of every feast, and people from all over the world come to the city to experience its grandeur. The search for the perfect biryani in Hyderabad is never-ending as opinions shift with every plate. But ask any local, and you will get the same answer time and again- the biryani you eat at a wedding tastes very different (and often better) from what you get at any hotel in the city.

It is a comparison that sparks endless debate. Some credit the taste to the joyous occasion, while others insist it is the technique. But one thing is for sure- when it comes to flavour and aroma, wedding biryani seems to hold something special. So what exactly makes it taste so different from the one served in hotels? Siasat.com digs in.

Dum makes all the difference

“Biryani is not about hurrying. When we cook for weddings, we start early in the morning and serve late at night, so the flavour comes out beautifully,” a bawarchi, who has been in the field for the past 30 years, tells Siasat.com.

Wedding biryani is slow-cooked using the traditional dum method, where marinated meat and partially cooked rice are layered in a large degh (copper vessel), sealed with dough, and placed over a wood fire. The biryani is left to cook undisturbed for hours, allowing steam to build inside and gently infuse every grain with the aroma of spices, saffron, and meat juices. This long, controlled process is what gives shaadi biryani its intense depth and signature smokiness.

In contrast, hotels typically prepare biryani in smaller batches using gas stoves. It is faster and more consistent, but loses out on the rustic depth and aroma that wood or coal brings.

There is also the matter of timing. Wedding biryani is usually served fresh and hot, straight from the degh, often after a period of natural resting that allows the flavours to settle. In hotels, biryani is sometimes held in warmers or reheated in portions, which is a practical approach, but one that can dull the freshness and complexity of the dish.

The bawarchi factor

Wedding biryani is usually entrusted to traditional bawarchis, seasoned cooks who have mastered the craft over decades, often inheriting techniques passed down through generations. These experts do not follow written recipes. Their hands measure spices, and their eyes know exactly when the rice is ready to be layered. As one Hyderabadi Reddit user put it, “Best Hyderabadi Biryanis are made at weddings. Hire a master who has the experience, and the food is gonna be great.”

Hotels, on the other hand, prioritise consistency. Chefs stick to fixed measurements and play it safe with spice levels, ensuring the biryani appeals to tourists and locals alike.

The emotional context in biryani

While there are other factors that can be considered on the topic, the setting is one important factor. It is not just about the food, it is also about the moment. Surrounded by family, dressed in festive clothes, sharing laughter and stories, people eat with more than just their mouths. The biryani becomes part of the celebration, and that joy seeps into the memory of its taste.

So, weddings or hotels, where is the best biryani in Hyderabad? For most locals, the verdict is clear. Hotel biryani may be great, but wedding biryani is unforgettable. It is not just the ingredients or the technique, but also the atmosphere, the emotion, and the sheer scale of it all. In a city that takes its biryani seriously, the best plate often comes not from a menu, but from a marriage.

People protest HYDRAA demolitions at Rajendranagar

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Tuesday, July 8, cleared encroachments from a park in Rajendranagar, reclaiming 1094 square yards of land.

However, it faced strong protests from property owners, some of whom lay down in front of the JCBs.

According to reports, residents of Nalanda Nagar colony filed a complaint with HYDRAA, alleging that park land in Haidarguda had been encroached upon.

Following this, HYDRAA officials brought JCBs and started demolishing the illegal boundary walls and sheds in the area.

Tensions arose as property owners rushed to the scene and started arguing with the officials.

Videos have surfaced on the internet showing people lying down in front of the JCBs. Police later removed them using force.

Property owners alleged they received notices but were not given enough time to act. One of them said that his land spans 1 acre and 4 guntas, but according to the HYDRAA’s survey, the land is 30 guntas, and the rest is under park land.

HYDRAA insists that the layout was approved by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) in 2001, showing it as a part of the Nalandanagar Colony.

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu welcomed Krishna waters to his state by performing Jala Harathi at the Srisailam project on Tuesday, July 8.

This year, the water was released three weeks before the scheduled date.

As of Tuesday, the current storage capacity reached 196.56 TMC due to the heavy inflows from the Srisailam project. The maximum storage capacity is 215.81 TMC. The water level has reached 881.60 ft, just 4.5 ft away from reaching the brim.

In the last 24 hours, the average inflow was recorded as 1,53,672 cusecs of water.

This year, from July 1 to July 5, 125 TMC was recorded, a sharp rise compared to the average inflow of 12.26 TMC for the same period over the last 15 years.

Around 81,588 cusecs of water were recorded as average outflow in the last 24 hours. Of this, 66,719 cusecs were released for power generation, and towards the Nagarjuna Sagar project, while 14,658 cusecs of water were released for the Pothireddypadu project in Andhra Pradesh.

Inflows in other projects

On Tuesday morning, the Priyadarshini Jurala Project (PJP) recorded a water storage of 168.73 TMC, against its full capacity of 312.05 TMC. The water level stood at 530.30 ft, nearly 60 feet below the Full Reservoir Level (FRL).

To manage the rising inflows, authorities opened 14 gates of the Jurala Project, releasing 1,26,653 cusecs of water downstream to the Srisailam reservoir. By 3 pm, the inflow into the project remained steady at around 1,25,000 cusecs.

Meanwhile, the Tungabhadra project in Andhra Pradesh reached a storage level of 75.93 TMC, out of its total capacity of 105.79 TMC. The water level was recorded at 1,624 ft, just 9 feet below its FRL of 1,633 ft.

Telangana writes to Centre

A day before the release of water from the Srisailam project, the Telangana government wrote to the secretary of the Union Jal Shakti ministry, raising alarm about the impending danger to the project. It stated that the Andhra Pradesh government has failed to take proper care and maintenance of the project, which comes under its purview.

The letter stated that due to heavy inflows over the years, the plunge-pool downstream of the dam needed repairs. The Telangana government has written to the NDSA and the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) about the danger to the dam, along with recommendations.

Class 8 student injured after ceiling fan falls at Hyderabad school; admin responds

Hyderabad: A Class 8 girl was injured after a ceiling fan fell inside a classroom of Nasr School located in Khairatabad on June 30.

The incident occurred after school hours, when a few students and teachers stayed back voluntarily to prepare for a chart competition scheduled for July 1.

According to the school, the student, Rushda Usmani, was immediately taken to the infirmary on the premises by her class teacher and treated by the on-campus nurse. The school then transported her to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle.

As per documents accessed by Siasat.com, the girl suffered an injury to her right eyelid. However, social media users alleged she was left unconscious, suffered multiple fractures, partial blindness in one eye, and required facial reconstruction surgery.

The posts accused the school of carelessness, alleging that she was rushed to a hospital in a school bus; however, the Hyderabad school administration has denied the allegations.

The incident only came to light after posts went viral on social media, accusing the school of negligence and carelessness. Her father, Zubair Usmani, also reportedly filed an FIR alleging that the fan had directly fallen on her, causing serious injuries.

As per documents accessed by Siasat.com, the girl suffered injuries to her right eyelid.

Hyderabad school denies social media claims

Denying the claims on social media as misinformation, Nasr School principal, Mir Mohiuddin Mohammed, said, “The incident occurred on June 30. The fan did not fall directly on the student. However, she was injured in the accident. We took her to the hospital and got her admitted and paid the medical bills.”

He added that the school inspects all electrical equipment every three years, and the classroom had new fittings installed just this summer.

Speaking to Siasat.com, the Hyderabad school principal claimed that the girl’s father was spreading the false information. “We have done everything possible to ensure the safety of every child in our school,” he added.

He dismissed claims that the girl was taken to the hospital in a school bus. “Since the hospital is close to the school, we took the child in our vehicle. Initially, a professional nurse on our premises provided first aid to the student, and the bleeding stopped,” he added.

The principal shared medical bills and documents with Siasat.com and said that although he initially offered to cover all expenses, the girl’s father refused further help. “He said he’s a High Court lawyer and that he would see us in court. I have all the documents regarding the medical expenses, along with the doctor’s reports,” he said.

According to him, when the girl was taken to the hospital, she was conscious, responsive, and able to see. “After the initial medical check-up, her vision was fine, but she reported slight blurriness due to the injury,” he explained.

He further said that the parents were cooperative while the girl was undergoing treatment, but that her father allegedly changed his stance after she was discharged. “He sensed an opportunity to gain benefits,” the principal alleged.

EFLU demands reopening of Najeeb Ahmed disappearance case

Najeeb Ahmed

Hyderabad: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) students’ union 2024-25 has demanded to reopen the Najeeb Ahmed disappearance case.

This comes after the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court, on June 30, decided to accept the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report in the disappearance of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed from his college hostel on October 15, 2016.

Najeeb was pursuing MSc in Biotechnology at JNU when he disappeared. The night before his disappearance, he was brutally assaulted by the members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

“Despite investigation by top agencies, the question ‘where is Najeeb’ remains unanswered. The investigation’s failure to find leads on Najeeb’s whereabouts is compounded by the fact that ABVP members involved in the attack were not questioned,” read a statement issued by EFLU Students’ Union on Monday, July 7.

“There are hundreds of Muslim youth jailed without any crime. Najeeb’s name on that list would just increase the number. There is no value for a Muslim life in India,” remarked Najeeb’s mother, Fathima Nafees.

The EFLU students’ union has expressed its unwavering solidarity with Najeeb’s family and asserted that his case will not be erased. They demanded that the CBI reinforce his “enforced disappearance.”

Rajnath Singh approves Rs 303.62 cr for Secunderabad Cantonment development

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Hyderabad: Defence minister Rajnath Singh has approved the allocation of Rs 303.62 crore for development works in the Secunderabad Cantonment area, marking a shift in how compensation for defence land transfers is utilised.

Traditionally, when cantonment land is transferred for public projects, the compensation is deposited into the Consolidated Fund of India. However, following persistent appeals and formal requests, this compensation will now be deposited into a dedicated escrow account linked to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), ensuring the funds are ring-fenced exclusively for local development projects.

Land transfer compensation

This decision comes in the context of the Defence ministry transferring land to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) for the construction of elevated corridors aimed at easing traffic congestion in the area. The Telangana government is required to pay Rs 303.62 crore as compensation for this land. Instead of routing the funds through central treasury protocols, the new arrangement allows the SCB direct access to the funds for infrastructure improvements within the cantonment.

The Defence ministry has instructed the SCB to prioritise four key areas once the compensation is deposited: upgrading underground drainage systems, improving drinking water supply, constructing retaining walls along drainage channels, and developing internal roads.

Kishan Reddy, Eatala Rajender express gratitude

Kishan Reddy and other local leaders, including Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender, have expressed gratitude to Rajnath Singh for this arrangement, calling it a “watershed moment” for the cantonment.

They highlighted that such a direct allocation to the local board is unprecedented and will ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

Fatima Owaisi College encroaching on Suram Cheruvu lake in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Goshamahal MLA Raja Singh, who recently resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), heavily criticised the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) over Fatima Owaisi College in the city.

He slammed the comment made by the commissioner about the college.

Raze college, demands Raja Singh

For the past many months, the MLA has been demanding that the college be razed due to alleged encroachment.

He alleged that All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leaders had encroached upon the lakebed for the construction of Fatima Owaisi College in Hyderabad.

Claiming that the HYDRAA chief said, “Many underprivileged students study at the college, and it provides employment to the poor,” the MLA questioned why the agency did not speak up when it rendered many poor homeless.

He further claimed that no action is being taken against the college due to the alliance between the Congress and AIMIM.

Challenging new Telangana BJP chief N. Ramchander Rao, Raja Singh suggested that he form a legal committee to fight in court to ensure the demolition of Fatima Owaisi College in Hyderabad.

HYDRAA on Fatima Owaisi College in Hyderabad

A few days ago, HYDRAA confirmed that Fatima Owaisi College in Bandlaguda was built within the Full Tank Level (FTL) of Surram Cheruvu (Salkam Cheruvu).

Yet, a decision on action is yet to come, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said at a citizen interaction organized on X Spaces on Sunday, July 6.

“As per the initial probe and the papers available, it is established that the college is indeed situated on the FTL of the Hyderabad lake. The final notice is awaited,” said Ranganath.

While recognizing the educational value of Fatima Owaisi College, HYDRAA insists that it should comply with legal procedures and environmental laws.

Telangana High Court relief for police recruitment protesters

Telangana High Court notifies revised working hours

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court granted relief to several candidates who protested at the Police Command Control Centre, alleging irregularities in police recruitment under the previous BRS government.

Justice K Lakshman quashed the cases filed against eight unemployed protesters, providing them relief. However, the court clarified that this relief applies only to the petitioners involved in this specific case.

Police cannot be treated as recovery agents: Telangana HC

In a seperate case, the Telangana High Court has made it clear that police cannot be treated as recovery agents in financial disputes. This clarification came during a hearing of a petition filed by V Satish Kumar from Hyderabad, who had lent money to P Dinesh.

When Dinesh failed to repay the loan, Satish approached the police seeking their intervention. However, the police refused to register a First Information Report (FIR), informing Satish that such matters are civil disputes and should be addressed in civil court, not through police action.

Dissatisfied with the police response, Satish took the matter to the High Court, seeking an order to compel the police to recover his money. Justice T Vinod Kumar, who presided over the case, categorically stated that the court cannot direct the police to recover money in private financial matters.

The judge emphasised that asking the police to intervene in such cases would essentially reduce their role to that of private recovery agents, which is not their mandate or legal responsibility.

The court further observed that the proper legal recourse for recovering unpaid loans is to file a civil suit. Police intervention is not appropriate in these cases, as their duties do not include the collection of private debts. The judge concluded that the police were justified in refusing to register the complaint and that Satish should pursue his claim through the civil courts.

Following these observations, the petitioner’s lawyer requested to withdraw the petition, which the court permitted, resulting in the dismissal of the case. This ruling reinforces the distinction between civil and criminal matters, underscoring that police cannot be compelled to act as agents for private loan recovery.

Telangana: 3 die after consuming adulterated toddy in Mahabubnagar

Hyderabad: Atleast 18 individuals were hospitalised on Tuesday evening, July 9, in Hyderabad after reportedly drinking adulterated toddy from Kukatpally shops.

The incident came to light after the department started receiving alerts from various hospitals, including one in Kukatpally, with patients complaining of dizziness, diarrhea, and low blood sugar levels.

According to a report by The Hindu, initial investigations revealed that the cases were tied to toddy shops in Kukatpally. The majority of the victims are wage laborers who live in places such as Hyderanagar and Indiranagar and among them was the 78-year-old whose health deteriorated due to underlying conditions after consuming the fake toddy from one of the suspected shops.

A few patients were transferred to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) while two others were transferred to Gandhi Hospital and one to Pratima Hospital for further treatment.

At first, 12 cases had been reported but six others came later looking for treatment with the same symptoms. The authorities observed that not all of them had confirmed drinking toddy.

Authorities seal 3 toddy shops in Hyderabad

The Prohibition and Excise Department has sealed three toddy shops in Hyderanagar, Shamshiguda, and KPHB Colony. Officials suspect that the toddy being sold at these stores could have been laced with sedatives like alprazolam and diazepam.

Samples were sent for analysis, the rest of the stock was destroyed, and the shop owners’ licenses have been suspended.

So far nothing conclusive has been found so far connecting it to the hospitalizations. Lab tests and medical reports are awaited to establish the final cause.

The authorities are still investigating to identify other potential sources of spurious toddy in the area.
