Nutrition App called Tiffin Box Planner by Siddhanth Nair aims to encourage children to eat healthy and balanced meals

7-yr-old Hyderabadi boy creates app for healthy eating habits

Hyderabad: A 7-year-old Siddhanth Nair created a Nutrition App which helps to record and calculate nutrition kids are getting in their Tiffin Box.

Children are picky eaters and parents do their best to guarantee that their kids get the required nutrition on a daily basis. Especially during school, it’s a tough job for parents to give healthy Tiffin as kids tend to prefer to consume junk food with little or no nutritive value. To tackle this situation and ensure healthy eating habits in kids, Siddhanth Nair has created the Nutrition App.

Siddhanth’s school (Ambitus World School) follows a healthy Tiffin regime for kids. Being on the WhiteHat Jr platform for the past 5-6 months, he wanted to utilize his learning to create an app to spread the message to other parents and encourage other kids to eat healthy as well.

“Kids now days have an evolved sense of right and wrong, and they want to contribute in their own way to address issues in our society. Kids as young as 6-year-old can start to learn coding to prepare them for the future and like Siddhant, we are already seeing many young kids creating some extremely creative, high utility digital applications that will make a long-term impact on the world.”, said Karan Bajaj, Founder and CEO, WhiteHat Jr

Kids are learning to code on WhiteHat Jr, an EdTech startup that teaches coding to kids between 6 to 14 years of age. Teaching cutting-edge curriculum on technologies like AI, robotics, machine learning and space tech, the startup aims to harness natural creativity of kids and shift their mindset from consumers to creators at an early age.

US security personnel have also put in place additional security measures at the consulate.

CAA-NRC: KCR in a dilemma as pressure mounts to break silence

TRS is coming under attack from a section of Muslims for the delay in announcing its stand.

CAA-NRC: KCR in a dilemma as pressure mounts to break silence

HYDERABAD: As the demand from the Muslim community is growing for a stay on the National Population Register (NPR), Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao appears to be in a dilemma over taking a stand on the NPR and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

With the elections to the urban local bodies scheduled for later this month, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is playing its cards carefully with Rao waiting for an appropriate time to declare his stand.

The participation of thousands of people in the ‘Million March’ held in Hyderabad on January 4 to demand revocation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, a halt to the NPR and withdrawal of the proposed NRC and a series of protest programmes planned by the United Muslim Action Committee (UMAC) this month have apparently put pressure on TRS to take a clear stand.

The UMAC, headed by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), an ally of TRS, has planned three major protest programmes in Hyderabad this month. The umbrella organization of various Muslim socio-religious groups has already organized public meetings in Hyderabad and other towns in Telangana.

The UMAC leaders have been demanding that KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, halt the NPR as done by the Kerala government.

The Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Joint Action Committee, which organized the ‘Million March’, had even invited KCR to lead the march. They had urged him to take a cue from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and lead the protest. However, there was no response from the TRS chief.

A delegation of UMAC leaders led by AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had called on KCR with the demand to stay the NPR, scheduled to be undertaken from April. Their contention was that the NPR is the first step of the NRC as already stated by the government in Parliament and made clear in the annual report of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

They thanked the TRS for voting against the CAA in Parliament and explained to KCR how the NRC could create problems for the people, especially Muslims. The delegation said since the CAA, NPR and NRC were all inter-linked, the state government should not implement the NPR.

After the meeting Owaisi had told the media that KCR assured the delegation that his party would soon announce its stand. According to the MP, the TRS chief voiced concern over the Hindu-Muslim divide sought to be created and even suggested that the UMAC involve the TRS, Congress and other parties in its campaign against the CAA.

Owaisi claimed that KCR even indicated that he will soon call a meeting of like-minded parties to bring them together on a common platform on the CAA and NRC.

However, KCR is said to be taking a cautious approach in view of the January 22 elections to 120 municipalities and 10 corporations.

Political observers say KCR did not immediately take a stand as he believes that if the BJP uses the same to seek votes in the municipal elections, this may boomerang on him.

In its best-ever poll performance in Telangana, the BJP had won four Lok Sabha seats, wresting three of them from the TRS. The BJP is expected to give a tough fight in the urban local bodies under these Lok Sabha constituencies.

As the BJP is believed to have some support among the urban voters, KCR does not want to take a chance by announcing his stand before the municipal polls, analysts say.

However, the TRS is coming under attack from a section of Muslims for the delay in announcing its stand. Some of the organizers of the ‘Million March’ found fault with KCR for delaying a decision and cautioned him that the ambiguity could cost the TRS dearly in the urban local body elections.

Political analyst Telakapalli Ravi believes the TRS opposed the CAA in Parliament because there is a sizeable Muslim population in Telangana.

He, however, feels that KCR will not go for a ‘head-on collision’ with Modi on any issue. “KCR never encouraged any active protest movement on any issue. Even for Telangana he was more for lobbying,” Ravi told IANS explaining KCR’s silence.

Ravi believes that KCR will act as per the Centre’s directions. “No political rebellion is expected from him. If it happens it will be a great wonder.”

Before the Lok Sabha elections, KCR had tried to form a Federal Front, a grouping of non-BJP and non-Congress parties. He was then seen as a potential national leader, who was expected to play a crucial role in the next government.

Some sections see the ongoing row over the CAA and the NRC as an opportunity for KCR to revive his efforts to cobble up a national alliance. He gave a hint to some Muslim leaders that he may call a meeting of all chief ministers opposed to the NRC.

However, Kerala Chief Minister Vijayan has taken the lead by writing to 11 non-BJP chief ministers, urging them to emulate the Kerala Assembly which passed a resolution demanding that the Centre scrap the CAA.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also spoken about bringing together all non-BJP chief ministers for a united fight against the CAA and the NRC.

“I was watching Deepika Padukone’s interview, she resides in India and she became a star here. Deepika went to JNU to promote her movie and there she met students who earlier use to raise slogans against our country. “This is the same JNU where slogans were raised against our country, Veer Savarkar and others. I request Hindus to boycott Deepika Padukone and her movie,” he added.

Who is more Nationalist? RSS or Tukde Tukde Gang

Hyderabad: Last year, on 25 December Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) hold a march from Mansoorabad, Hastinapuram and Vanasthalipuram, merged at LB Nagar X roads, and proceed to the indoor stadium at Saroornagar in which 8,000 swayamsevaks had participated.

The Rachakonda police had issued a traffic advisory and asked citizens to take alternative routes to reach their destinations.

This year, on 4 January, the Joint Action Committee hold a Million March in which lakhs of people protested against the CAA-NRC-NPR. Permission for the Million March was denied by the police commissioner earlier but later the HC of Telangana permitted to hold the March.

Many in Million March can be seen holding the flag of India (Tiranga) whereas, in the rally by the RSS, they hold their own flag, not a single person in the rally can be seen holding our national flag.

This shows who is more nationalist, we the Indians who are protesting against the divisive law, CAA-NRC-NPR or those who are supporting the law.

CAA-NRC: Not scared of cases, says Hyderabad Million March JAC

HYDERABAD: The organisers of ”Million March” held here on January 4 to protest against the CAA, NRC and NPR have said that they are not scared of the cases filed against them by the Hyderabad Police.

“We are not scared of these cases. We will fight them legally,” Joint Action Committee (JAC) convenor Mushtaq Malik told IANS on Thursday.

Police filed 25 cases against Malik and other organisers in various police stations in the city for allegedly violating the conditions laid down by the police while granting permission for the ”Million March”.

Hundreds of thousands of people had attended the ”Million March” against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) at Dharna Chowk in the heart of the city.

The massive turnout had led to a traffic jam on major roads around the venue for over three hours.

While police said the permission was given for gathering of only 1,000 people, JAC, which comprises 40 organisations, said permission was granted for the ”Million March”.

“Million does not mean 1,000,” said Malik.

He alleged that there is political pressure behind the police cases, but, however, did not elaborate.

The JAC convenor said the cases were filed despite the fact that it was a totally peaceful protest. He demanded that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government to withdraw the cases.

Malik and other organisers were booked for unlawful assembly, disobedience of an order by a public servant and wrongful restraint. Police have also initiated further action in the case by issuing notices to the accused under Section 41 (A) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, directing them to appear before the police.

The JAC leader said a team of lawyers was working to fight the cases.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), an ally of ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), was not part of the march. It is organising a rally on Friday on the city outskirts as its leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said they were not given permission for the rally in the city.

NIRDPR hosts conclave on All India State Election Commissioners’

Hyderabad: National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) is hosting a Two-Day All India State Election Commissioners’ (SEC) Conclave on 9th and 10th January 2020.  The objective is to take stock of the gains made and challenges faced by the State Election Commissions (SECs) in conducting timely and free elections to local bodies as more than two decades since the promulgation of 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments.

NIRDPR and State Election Commission, Telangana, are jointly organizing this Conclave of State Election Commissioners’ at the NIRDPR campus here. The Conclave is being attended by 40 delegates from across the country.

The Conclave was inaugurated by Sri. G. Kishan Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India.

While delivering the inaugural address, G. Kishan Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India, recalled the concept of “Gram Swaraj” of Mahatma Gandhi who wanted to see each village a little republic, self-sufficient in its vital wants.

Recalling the Independence Day speech of Sri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, G. Kishan Reddy said that one way of involving a common man in governance is strengthening our local Governments. The local bodies in the country are the essential features of democracy. He reminded that it is the responsibility of every citizen to cherish it, protect it and promote it.

He then touched upon on few key issues of the electoral process such as timely conduct of elections, reducing the money and muscle power in the elections. The Hon’ble Minister called upon the SECs to make the elections credible by following a transparent electoral process.

G. Kishan Reddy mentioned that Telangana State Election Commission is launching a pilot project using face recognition technology to check photo electoral rolls in the forthcoming municipal elections and the use of technology in the electoral  process enhances its credibility.

Kishan Reddy made a special mention about the Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which has re-established grass-root democracy there. Because of these elections, Panchayats of J&K have received their 14th Finance Commission funds meant for their welfare. He appreciated NIRDPR in having supported the Jammu and Kashmir to conduct the training to the newly elected Sarpanchas and ward members

The Minister lauded all the State Election Commissioners and Dr. WR. Reddy IAS, Director General, NIRDPR, for their contribution to nation-building and expressed hope that the collective inputs received during the conclave will help the states to bring the local body elections to centre stage

Dr. W.R. Reddy IAS Director General of NIRDPR addressing the All India State Election Commissioners’ Conclave being held at NIRDPR Hyderabad.

Delivering the Welcome Address, Dr. W.R. Reddy IAS, Director General, NIRDPR, informed the delegates that the groundwork for the 73rd Constitutional Amendment was done at NIRDPR. He congratulated the State Election Commissioners for guarding the democracy by conducting free and fair elections to 3.5 million elected representatives every 5 years. He said that the participation of people in the Gram Sabah is not encouraging and there is need to create awareness among the Gram Sabah members to participate in the Gram Sabhas to make Indian democracy vibrant.

The Director-General, NIRDPR, said all the SECs in the country create a huge repository of data about the voters, contesting and elected candidates. As part of research work, Scholars can now work on the  wide range of large-scale datasets, to establish new empirical trends in the democratic contexts  and  to  gain deep insights into voter behaviour at a local body level

Delivering the keynote address, V. Nagi Reddy, SEC Telangana, said, “Article 243E of the constitution of India stipulated that elections to each local body have to be completed before the completion of the term of the sitting body. Though timely conducting elections is a constitutionally mandated requirement, the SECs cannot decide on the dates and the number of phases of elections. The SECs for functioning effectively, have to depend on the State Government both for funds as well as manpower.”

V Nagi Reddy further said, “Local Governments are Nurseries of Political Leadership”. But there have been several instances where elections to local bodies were postponed by the States on one plea or the other.

He rightly mentioned that delaying elections amounts to a violation of the constitution and denying the citizens of their democratic rights of elected local governments. He stressed upon on principle of parity between parliamentary and assembly elections, on the one hand, and Panchayat elections, on the other. He called upon the delegates to deliberate to bring some commonality in the election procedures and provisions so as to make the local body election process more credible.

Delivering a special address, Sri. Sunil Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, said that to strengthen grass-root democracy and also for free and fair polls, networking and reaching out to stakeholders was necessary. The key stakeholders in the local body elections include the Voters, Civil Society Organizations, Academicians, State Governments  Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Training Institutes. An integrated approach of these stakeholders will certainly benefit in terms of increasing the voters’ awareness and to deepen and flourish our democracy.

Speaking later, A. K. Chauhan, Chairman, Standing Committee of SECs and State Election Commissioner, Bihar, said that the major constraints being faced by the SECs are Funds and Manpower. He urged the Central and State Governments to make necessary budget allocations to SECs so that they can become more proactive and work for creating an eco-system to ensure free and fair elections to local bodies.

The inaugural session concluded with vote of thanks presented by Ms. Radhika Rastogi Deputy Director-General, NIRDPR.
