Andhra CM Jagan appears in CBI court in DA case

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday appeared before a CBI special court here in the disproportionate assets case.

Reddy, who landed at Begumpet Airport in a special aircraft from Vijayawada, reached the special court at Nampally Court Complex amid tight security.

This is the first time Reddy has personally appeared in the court as the chief minister in the case registered against him in 2011.

Reddy, who took over as the chief minister in May last year, has been seeking exemptions from personal appearance every Friday.

However, the special court, hearing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases, last week took exception to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief seeking exemptions every week.

Along with the chief minister, his close aide and YSR Congress MP V. Vijaya Sai Reddy, who is accused number two in the case, former minister and party leader Dharmana Prasad Rao, IAS officer Sri Laxmi, industrialist Shyamaprasad Reddy, retired IAS officer Samuel and other accused appeared before the court.

The court on November 1 last year had dismissed Jagan’s petition for exemption from personal appearance in the case.

The chief minister had sought the exemption from personal appearance in the court on the ground that he is holding a constitutional post and needs to attend several important programmes.

However, the CBI had opposed the plea on the ground that there is a change only in personal capacity of the petitioner and not in the circumstances of the case. The federal agency had also argued that Jagan may influence the witnesses.

In what is known as ”quid-pro-quo” cases, Jagan was accused of getting investments into his businesses by firms and individuals in return for the undue favours by the government headed by his father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy between 2004 and 2009. The CBI has filed 11 chargesheets against Jagan and others.

However, the YSRCP leader denied all the charges and termed them as political vendetta.

The CBI arrested Jagan and sent him to jail on May 27, 2012. After 16 months in jail, he was granted bail.

This is the second biggest protest in Hyderabad against CAA, NRC and NPR after the Million March

CAA-NRC-NPR: Hyderabad witnesses massive ‘Tiranga Rally’

By Safoora Nuzhath,

HYDERABAD: The open ground of the historic Eidgah Mir Alam which witnesses’ biggest congregation only twice a year on the occasion of festivals, saw a mammoth gathering on Friday.

The Tiranga Rally was taken out under the aegis of the United Muslim Action Committee comprising various groups and headed by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

The gates of Eidgah Miralam saw thousands entering. Makkah Masjid Imam Maulana Rizwan Qureshi delivered the Friday sermon and led the prayers.

Soon after Friday prayers, the Tiranga Rally began. There was a deluge of protesters on the streets with tens of thousands carrying the Tricolor.

AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi led the rally that began from the Eidgah and culminated in a public meeting at Shastripuram grounds, which is closer to the newly constructed mansion of the MP.

Owaisi discouraged the crowd from showing official documents. He also said that there was no need for people to show documents such Aadhaar cards to anybody.

“We demand that the CAA be taken back. We demand that NPR and NRC be scrapped completely,” Mr Owaisi said.

A host of speakers, including Maulana Jafar Pasha, Syed Akbar Nizamuddin Hussaini, Mufti Mahmood Zubair and others, took to the stage and demanded that they demanded that the BJP-led government repeal the CAA and put an end to it NRC.

An enthused crowd also had elderly men and women.

Holding national flags and placards, the participants sang National Anthem apart from raising ‘Azadi’ slogans.

Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in several parts of Old City.

Million March

This is the second biggest protest in Hyderabad against CAA, NRC and NPR after the Million March which was organised on 4th January by 40 organisations and led by Mushtaq Malik, a socio-political activist.

CAA-NRC: Tiranga out of stock due to massive demand

More than 10 lakh flags have been sold in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh since last month.

CAA-NRC: Tiranga out of stock due to massive demand

HYDERABAD: Daily protest rallies against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) have triggered an unprecedented demand for national flags, leading to tricolour shortage ahead of the Republic Day.

Flagmakers estimate that more than seven lakh flags were sold for ‘Million March‘ in Hyderabad and Friday’s ‘Tiranga Rally’.

Thousands carrying national flags had poured out on to the streets on January 4 for the ‘Million March‘ organised by Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising 40 different groups demanding revocation of CAA and withdrawal of proposals for National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The retailers again ran out of the stock due to huge demand for flags for Friday’s ‘Tiranga Rally’ organised by United Muslim Action Committee, headed by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

Tricolour shortage

With more protests planned in the coming days, the flag manufacturers here are working overtime to meet the increasing demand.

The surge in demand is not just from Hyderabad but also from other districts of Telangana and other states.

“I have never such a demand for the tricolour in my life,” Shaik Osman of SK Group, a leading manufacturer of election material and national flags told IANS.

“We had readied stocks for the Republic Day but the entire stocks were sold out. Now, we are stepping up production to meet the demand,” he said.

Osman’s company supplies tricolour to retailers in Hyderabad, Delhi and other cities.

“We usually receive orders for one lakh flags for January 26 but this time we have already supplied more than five lakh flags and there are many more orders on hand,” he said.

Over 10 lakh flags sold

Ahead of Independence Day and Republic Day, the manufacturers get orders in thousands for flags made of cloth but since the last week of December when the anti-CAA protests broke out, the requirement has gone up in lakhs.

  • Tiranga-Rally
  • Tiranga rally
  • Tiranga rally

According to another flag manufacturer ARC Flag Shop, more than 10 lakh flags have been sold in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh since last month.

The manufacturers say they are struggling to meet the orders at short notice. They point out that machines are used only for printing while cloth cutting, stitching and packing all have to be done manually. They outsource stitching and packing to workers working from home and majority of them are women.

Cashing on massive demand

The organisers of rallies and other protest marches are placing orders for the flags, which are commonly available in the sizes of 20×30 inch, 30×45 inch and 40×60 inch.

Cashing on the massive demand, retailers have jacked up the prices. A 30×45 flag is normally sold for Rs 30 but the same is now being sold for Rs 50.

However, this did not deter people from buying the flags to participate in the protests. Retailers and bulk manufacturers are also getting big orders from the districts, where huge rallies are being organised.

Retailers say people are buying flags to hoist them atop their houses following a call by the AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi as part of the anti-CAA campaign.

With United Muslim Action Committee planning another major protest at historic Charminar on January 25, the demand is likely to go up further.

At this public meeting, Owaisi will unfurl the national flag at midnight to make it the first flag hoisting for the Republic Day. SK Group is preparing the tricolour for this special occasion.

Citizenship on religious basis antithetical to our Constitution

New Delhi: AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday slammed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, saying that citizenship on religious basis is ‘antithetical to our Constitution.’

“If a law confers citizenship on six groups but excludes only one, then it is a law to deny the citizenship,” Owaisi tweeted.

“(Amit) Shah may not like the Constitution, but he has to work within its limits. Citizenship on the religious basis is antithetical to our Constitution and that is reason enough to oppose it,” added he.

Earlier today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was enacted to give citizenship and not take it away, while also urging people to steer clear of opposition parties who are “spreading lies”.

“No citizenship can be taken away by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. It was only enacted to grant citizenship. The opposition parties are spreading lies.

I only want people of Gujarat to stay away from such people,” Shah said at an event in Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
