HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath inspects illegal construction in Ayyappa Society of Khanamet village in Serilingampally mandal on Saturday.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response, Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) commissioner AV Ranganath inspected a multi-storeyed building being constructed illegally at Ayyappa Society in Khanamet village of Serilingampally mandal in an area measuring 684 sq ft on Saturday, January 4, and took stock of the situation.

Based on the complaint by locals that despite notices served by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and High Court orders, the illegal construction was still happening, Ranganath, along with HYDRAA, GHMC, and revenue officials inspected the construction work happening right beside a 100 ft road.

Ranganath reviewed the notices served by the GHMC and the High Court’s orders at the scene.

He took the issue of the builder disregarding the High Court’s orders and subsequent demolition notices served by the GHMC seriously.

The GHMC issued demolition notices on February 14, 2024, and speaking orders on February 26, 2024, against the illegal construction which has a cellar, ground floor, and five floors above it. Even the High Court had not only declared it as an illegal construction but had sought action against it on April 19, 2024.

Based on the High Court’s order, the GHMC had partly demolished the structure on June 13, 2024. However, the construction continued unabated.

Group demands taller metro pillars in Hyderabad for Ganesh procession

Hyderabad: “Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS)” members met the Hyderabad Metro Rail managing director NVS Reddy on Saturday, demanding the Hyderabad Metro’s Old City corridor be built with taller pillars.

The Hindu group submitted the memorandum to NVS Reddy ‘to ensure the metro pillars do not obstruct’ Ganesh idol procession in the city.

The letter was signed by BGUS leaders Ravinutala Sashidhar, K Mahender BV Chandrashekhar Balapur Utsav Samithi chairperson K Niranjan Reddy and vice chairperson S Srinivas Reddy.

Earlier in September 2024, the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Committee had threatened to launch an agitation if the Telangana government failed to make proper arrangements for the immersion of Ganesh idols in Hyderabad.

Despite holding meetings, the government did not make adequate arrangements for the immersion, they alleged.

“We will launch a massive agitation in the city if the arrangements are not completed by this afternoon. All Ganesh pandal organizers will stage a protest near the mandapam,” they warned.

A delegation from the committee visited Hussainsagar to review the arrangements before the immersions began.

One taken into custody for allegedly filming girl students in their bathrooms in Mahabubnagar Government Polytechnic College on Saturday.

Hyderabad: Even before the shocking cell phone video recording incident in CMRIT College of Engineering girls hostel’s bathrooms could sink in, a similar incident has sparked protests at Mahabubnagar Government Polytechnic College for Girls on Saturday, January 4.

The girl students in the polytechnic college alleged that a person who had come to write an exam in their college put up a hidden camera on the walls of their bathrooms and filmed them.

One of the girls who noticed the hidden camera informed the principal, but claimed that there was no response from the latter. The students who got agitated started protesting on their campus. They were later joined by student organisations. When the issue came to the notice of the police they swung into action to pacify the agitated youngsters.

The police arrested the suspect based on the information provided by the students, and Mahabubnagar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Venkateswarlu assured the students that the accused will be sent for judicial remand, after which the students relented.

It came to the notice of the police that even in the past a similar incident has happened.

DSP Venkateswarlu said that this was the first incident which came to their notice, and that it will be informed to the higher officials. He said that if it came to be known that the college administration knew about any such incident happening earlier, it will be informed through the report that will be submitted to the higher officials.

On the question whether the police have found any videos on which the allegations were being made, he said that the woman sub-inspector of police (WSI) investigating the case will see the content and ascertain that.

Hyderabad woman in Oman

Hyderabad: In yet another case of crime against minor girls, a Hyderabad man repeatedly sexually assaulted and harassed his two step-daughters.

The incident took place in the area that falls under the jurisdiction of Langar Houz Police.

Hyderabad girls faced ordeal in mother’s absence

As per the details of the case, the girls, aged 16 and 18 years, faced the ordeal multiple times when their mother was not present in the house.

The ordeal came to light when the mother saw the girls crying.

After knowing the details, the mother approached the Langar Houz police and lodged a case.

Based on the complaint, police booked a case and arrested the accused.

While the girls were sent for medical examinations, the accused was presented before the judge, who remanded him in judicial custody.

In a separate case that came to light recently, a 14-year-old girl from Hyderabad fought a legal battle against her father, who sexually assaulted her repeatedly.

The nightmare began when the girl’s mother went to meet her cousin in Yakutpura in September 2023, leaving her and two other children with their father, a 38-year-old painter.

During that night, the father allegedly raped his daughter, threatening her to ensure silence.

Upon returning home the next day, the mother discovered the horrific truth and reported it to the police in Bandlaguda, leading to the arrest of the accused.

Despite initial support from her mother, the girl found herself isolated when her mother later sided with the accused. However, her mother’s change in stance did not deter her spirit. Instead, she took it upon herself to pursue justice.

The Hyderabad girl’s unwavering resolve led to a significant legal victory when T. Anitha, the XII Additional Sessions Judge at Nampally Court, sentenced her father to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 6,000. Additionally, the court awarded Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the survivor.

‘Traitor of farmers,’ KTR lashes out on Telangana CM

KTR calls CM Revanth 'traitor' for farmers in Telangana

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Sunday, January 5 labelled chief minister A Revanth Reddy as a “traitor” of farmers in Telangana.

KTR criticised the chief minister over the Indiramma Bharosa scheme stating that the Telangana government has cheated the farmers by restricting the Rythu Bharosa investment support to Rs 12,000 per acre per annum, instead of the promised Rs 15,000. He reminded the chief minister when the latter was then Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president promised to provide Rs 15,000 per acre per annum to farmers and another Rs 12,000 per annum to farm labourers.

Responding to the Telangana cabinet’s decision on Rythu Bharosa, the Sircilla MLA criticised the Congress for failing to implement a single farmer-centric scheme despite repeated pleas.

In a post on X, the former Telangana minister said, “The Congress is synonymous with fraud and deceit.” He compared the party to “a useless relative who is a burden on the family” and Revanth Reddy as “a traitor to farmers.”

KTR said the much-publicised Warangal Rythu Declaration and Rahul Gandhi’s promises to farmers were hollow and had no meaning.

Telangana cabinet decision on Rythu Bharosa

KTR’s reaction comes after the Telangana government announced on January 4 that farmers in Telangana will receive Rs 12,000 per acre annually under the Rythu Bharosa scheme, an increase from the current Rs 10,000. Further, families of landless farm labourers will receive a similar amount annually under the newly introduced Indiramma Atmeeya Bharosa scheme. These schemes will be implemented starting January 26.

Following the cabinet meeting, CM Revanth criticised the Opposition for spreading ‘misinformation’ about Rythu Bharosa. He clarified that the scheme would provide financial assistance without any conditions.

“The scheme will now cover all cultivable lands without imposing conditions. However, lands designated for non-agricultural uses — such as mining, real estate, industrial projects, and residential purposes — along with government-acquired lands, will be excluded,” CM Revanth said. He also urged individuals who had previously received Rythu Bandhu benefits for lands acquired by the government to disclose relevant details and cooperate with the authorities.

Telangana govts’ failure to construct rubat in Ajmer Sharif disappoints pilgrims

Telangana govts' failure to construct rubat in Ajmer Sharif disappoints pilgrims

Hyderabad: Thousands of people from the city visiting the holy shrine of Persian Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti in Ajmer in view of the 813 Urs celebration in Ajmer will have to check-in themselves at private accommodations.

This is because the Telangana government, for the last 10 years, failed to make any progress in its plans to construct a ‘Rubat’, (a building that provides shelter for travellers and pilgrims) in Ajmer.

The Urs celebrations started on January 2 and will continue till January 10.

After Telangana was formed in 2014, the then chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) promised a rubat in Ajmer for the pilgrims. The then TRS government sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the project. But, it’s almost ten years with no progress.

The minorities’ welfare department has not been able to take up work at the ground level for various reasons, although the state government had purchased a piece of land measuring about 5,000 sq. yards from the Ajmer development authority.

The minorities’ welfare department had sent several delegations at the government’s expense to explore the feasibility of the project. In fact, a foundation stone was laid by former CM KCR. However, the project did not make any headway and the government changed in 2023.

The then adviser to the government on minority affairs AK Khan stated that the government had already made plans for the construction of the building at Ajmer.

Former Telangana State Wakf Board chairman Mohd Saleem had time and again visited the Ajmer shrine and told the public that the project would be taken up at any cost. Similarly, BRS MLC Mohd Mahmood Ali who served as deputy CM and home minister during the BRS rule, also assured the same.

“Regimes have changed. Now Congress came to power. At least now the government should consider taking up the project in true spirit. Visitors will save at least some money if they get accommodation at a cheaper price,” said Akram Qureshi, a social worker from Old City who is heading to participate in the annual Urs at Ajmer shrine.

Similar demands are made by the people who are visiting the Ajmer Shrine. “It cannot be constructed overnight. Discussing the previous government’s intention is a waste of time, the present Congress government should sincerely follow it up,” demanded Shaik Waseem, a driver from First Lancer.

Hyderabad Old City metro: Compensation cheques to be given on Jan 6

Hyderabad: With the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II project in Old City set to begin, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) managing director NVS Reddy announced on Sunday, January 5 that compensation cheques for 41 affected properties will be distributed on Monday, January 6 at 2 pm.

Compensation cheques for property owners will be distributed by Telangana minister of Transport and BC welfare, Ponnam Prabhakar and Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi.

HAML MD noted that while 1,100 properties along the MGBS-Chandrayangutta route in Corridor-6 are affected, landowners are voluntarily offering their land for Metro construction in Hyderabad’s Old City.

The affected properties will receive Rs 81,000 per square yard, a rate set by the district collector. Additionally, as per the Relief and Rehabilitation Act, compensation for rehabilitation and removal of structures will also be provided to the actual property owner.

HAML MD further stated that 169 owners have submitted consent letters, with ownership verification completed for over 40 properties.

The cheque distribution program will take place at the Hyderabad district collector’s office near Lakdikapul. The event will be attended by Hyderabad Metro MD and district collector Mr Anudeep Durishetty.

Details of expansion

The second phase of the Hyderabad metro will cover a total distance of 76.4 km across five corridors, including the MGBS to Chandrayangutta route, which will bring the metro rail to the Old City of Hyderabad.

With the cabinet’s approval of the DPR, the project can now move forward, and officials are preparing to submit the report to the Union government for final approval.

Funding for metro rail in old city, other areas of Hyderabad

The total budget for this significant project stands at an estimated Rs 24,269 crore. Funding for the Metro rail in the Old City of Hyderabad, along with other corridors, will be sourced through a mix of contributions:

  • State Government: Rs 7,313 crore (30% of the total cost)
  • Central Government: Rs 4,230 crore (18% of the cost), contingent upon approval
  • Multilateral Agencies: Rs 11,693 crore (48%), with expected loans from agencies such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the New Development Bank (NDB), all backed by a sovereign guarantee
  • Public-Private Partnership (PPP): Rs 1,033 crore (4%), to be sourced through private investments

The Hyderabad Metro’s first phase, covering 69 km across three corridors, was completed by previous governments through a public-private partnership model, costing approximately Rs 22,000 crore. Currently, about 5 lakh passengers use the Metro daily, benefiting from faster and more reliable commutes.

With the second phase expected to add 46.4 km to the existing network, the city’s total metro coverage will reach 115.4 km. Once completed, the new routes, including the much-anticipated extension into the Old City, are projected to increase daily ridership by 8 lakh passengers.
