Hyderabad: Five members of CMR College of Engineering, including the girls’ hostel wardens, the principal, the director, and the chairman have been booked under criminal charges by the police for brushing the matter under the carpet.
The wardens identified as Allam Preethi Reddy and KV Dhanalaxmi were negligent towards their duties while principal Varahabatla Anantha Narayana, director Madireddy Janga Reddy, and chairman Chamakura Gopal Reddy have been accused of mounting pressure on the wardens not to let the incident get exposed.
“They did not give priority to such a serious incident and intentionally avoided escalating the matter to the police or the parents of the victims. They even tried to suppress the issue and blamed the victims with derogatory comments thereby insulting the modesty of the victimised students,” police stated on Sunday, January 5.
According to the police, the abnormal behaviour of the hostel administration and the college management has abetted the main accused of taking the chance of perpetrating voyeurism.
Two persons were arrested on January 4 for placing hidden cameras in the washroom of the girls’ hostel.
They were identified as Nanda Kishore Kumar and Govind Kumar, both 20 years old and natives of Bihar. The main accused have confessed the crime before the police. Kishore Kumar and Govind Kumar have been sent to judicial remand.
The two accused were booked under sections 125 A and 77 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanahita (BNS) by the Medchal police. According to the police, Kishore Kumar and Govind Kumar recorded the girls while they were in the washrooms.
The two accused were arrested following large-scale protests by the female students at CMRIT College of Engineering in Hyderabad. The protestors alleged that around 300 private videos were secretly recorded over the past three months.
Following the incident, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and college students held a protest on the college’s premises over the girls’ hostel video scandal.
Cyberabad police advisory
Cyberabad police sent out an advisory stating that any girl or woman in danger, or needing help could dial 100 or reach out to Cyberabad WhatsApp No- 9490617444 who will reach the incident spot within no time.
Hyderabad: While many wish to land up in heaven after death, some choose to leave a lasting legacy on Earth by donating their organs to save lives. Peddolla Prashanth Reddy, a police constable serving at the Kandukuru police station under the Rachakonda commissionerate, was one such noble soul.
The police constable breathed life into two people by donating his heart and kidneys. He had become brain-dead after an unidentified vehicle knocked his vehicle on December 28, while returning home.
While being treated at the Yashoda Hospital in Malakpet after suffering a serious head injury in the accident, he breathed his last on January 4.
Prashanth’s wife Sowmya and his father Nagireddy, who retired as an assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI), decided to donate his heart and kidneys to Jeevandan (organ donation/transplantation facility) ensuring he lived on in others even after death.
Appreciating the bereaved family members for donating the deceased cop’s organs, Rachakonda police commissioner G Sudheer Babu assured all departmental support will be given to Prashanth’s family members.
He handed Rs 90,000 to Prashanth’s family members to perform his final rites in Hyderabad on Sunday, December 5.
Hyderabad: As part of the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) program the state government sanctioned Rs 7,032 crore for 38 works, including the construction of flyovers, underpasses, and road-over-bridges (ROB) to ease the traffic in various parts of Hyderabad and its nearby municipalities.
As part of the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) initiated by the previous BRS government, several flyovers and road infrastructure projects were taken up mostly under the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Out of the 42 works under SRDP, 36 projects have been completed.
Among them is the Nehru Zoological Park to Aramghar flyover, which is 4.04 km long. It is known to be the longest flyover after the PVNR Expressway which is 11.6 km long. The Aramghar flyover will be inaugurated by chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday, January 6.
The flyover from Zoo Park to Aramghar has been constructed at the cost of Rs 736 crore. The remaining works including laying the ramps on both sides of the six-lane bi-directional highway is expected to be completed by March 2025.
This is the 23rd flyover to be inaugurated under the SRDP, in addition to 22 flyovers, 5 underpasses, 6 ROBs, and 3 other works that have been completed.
The state government claims that the Bairamalguda second-level flyover between Uppal-Nagole-Kamineni-LB Nagar Junction- Bairamalguda, Abdul Kalam flyover (Owaisi Junction), Chandrayangutta flyover; have reduced travel time and fuel consumption for travellers going from Secunderabad, undivided Warangal district, Huzurabad, Medchal, Malkajgiri, to Hyderabad airport in Shamshabad.
In addition to these projects, there are flyovers, underpasses, and ROBs being constructed around the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy (KBR) Park.
These road infrastructure projects are expected to ease the transportation of 1,700 to 2,000 buses including private buses which are despatched to various parts of the state and beyond every single day from Imlibun and other bus stations in and around the city.
Hyderabad: The Commissioner’s Task Force (south) team conducted a raid at a gambling house in Chatrinaka on Saturday night. Police seized Rs. 56,700 in cash, playing cards and mobile phones.
The police, on information, conducted the raid at the house of Rajender Prasad, 56, a resident of Uppuguda.
“A total of 12 people including organizers were apprehended during the raid. Rajender was taking a commission from the participants and collecting huge money,” said additional DCP task force A Sreenivasa Rao.
The arrested men and seized material were handed over to Chatrinaka police station for further action.
Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA of Goshamahal constituency T Raja Singh demanded the Aramgarh – Zoo Park flyover be named as ‘Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Flyover’.
“I have come to know the AIMIM party is demanding the flyover be given the name of Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi. The flyover is constructed with public money and the government should name it as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Flyover because it is located near the police academy where IPS officers from across the country get trained and serve the nation,” said Raja Singh.
The MLA took objection to the AIMIM party cadre putting banners and tying flags on the flyover to be inaugurated by the chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday, January 6. “The project was completed with Rs. 800 crore public money and not personal money of Asaduddin Owaisi. The party should immediately remove the banners,” Raja Singh demanded.
Raja Singh reiterated that Asaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi have the habit of switching loyalties. “During the BRS government, they were with the BRS party and after Congress came to power, both the brothers are supporting Revanth Reddy,” he alleged.
Hyderabad: Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy attended the World Telugu Fedaration’s (WTF) biennial conference, on its closing day on Sunday, December 5.
The 12th Biennial Conference, held at Novotel in Hyderabad, aims at preserving, promoting, and celebrating the rich tapestry of Telugu culture across the globe.
The World Telugu Federation was started three decades ago by former chief minister and film actor NT Rama Rao.
While speaking at the event, the Telangana CM said that he was delighted to participate in the World Telugu Federation conference.
“After Hindi, Telugu is the most spoken language in the country. Many Telugu leaders have been active in the national politics,” he said.
“People like Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, PV Narasimha Rao, NTR, Kaka, Jaipal Reddy, Venkaiah Naidu played a key role in the country’s politics. These days, the role of Telugu leaders in the country’s politics decreased,” he went on to say.
“No one should forget their mother language even if they excel in politics, film or business. We should acquire knowledge of foreign language knowledge apart from respecting our language” Revanth Reddy said, asserting the importance of the usage of one’s native language.
The Telangana CM claimed that the government, in efforts to mark respect to the Telugu language, has been using Telugu prominently in the service of people in recent times.
He urged Telugu NRIs to invest in Telangana and cooperate in the development of the state. The government has envisaged a ‘2050 development plan’ with the slogan “Telangana Rising” to prepare plans to develop Future City as the biggest city in the world, he added.
The Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy said that the two Telugu states of Telangana and AP should move forward and compete with the world in terms of development.
Hyderabad: There could be innumerous causes for a fire accident to happen, especially when it involves a food and beverage establishment. One such fire accident happened on Sunday night at the Hotel Minerva Grand in Hamayathnagar, but fortunately the flames were extinguished in no time.
Hotel Minerva, formerly Minerva Coffee Shop has been an iconic restaurant for the city dwellers since the 90s. On Sunday night, residents living close to the hotel witnessed huge flames emerging out of the top floor of the hotel, where the chimneys of the restaurants are located.
Fearing that the flames could be coming out of the kitchen in one of the hotel’s restaurants, videos were making rounds. But the situation on the ground was different.
It turned out to be flames caused by the residues of oil trapped on the walls of the chimneys that had accumulated over time, suddenly causing the fire.
Though the flames emerging from the chimneys looked like a major fire accident from the outside, there was no damage in the kitchens.
There were three chimneys on a structure constructed above the fifth floor where the hotel’s staff reside.
The fire broke out from two of the chimneys, one emerging out of the coffee shop located on the ground floor, and another from a restaurant located on the second floor.
According to Sandeep, a staff member, informed Siasat.com that the fire fighters reached the spot immediately and doused the flames in the chimneys from the top floor.
While the fire emerging from the chimney of the restaurant was immediately extinguished with water, another chimney was still spitting out fire (though not visible from outside) by 10 pm.
At around the same time, an event was happening at the fifth floor of the hotel. Everything seemed normal, as the guests were having a good time, and though being well aware of the fire accident, neither the staff, nor the guests panicked.
However, this was a wake-up call for many food and beverage establishments which still don’t follow proper fire safety guidelines in Hyderabad and elsewhere, because fire can break out due to many factors which may sound strange to many.
Raipur: Suresh Chandrakar, the prime accused in the murder of a journalist in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, has been taken into custody by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Hyderabad, a police official said on Monday.
The accused, a contractor by profession, was absconding since the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar came to light on January 3, he said.
The SIT, which was constituted to conduct the probe into the case, rounded up Suresh Chandrakar from Hyderabad late Sunday night, the official said.
His brothers Ritesh Chandrakar and Dinesh Chandrakar and supervisor Mahendra Ramteke have already been arrested in the case, he said.
Mukesh Chandrakar (33), a freelance journalist, went missing on January 1. His body was found on January 3 in a septic tank on a property owned by Suresh Chandrakar at Chattanpara Basti in Bijapur town, police earlier said.
A news report highlighting alleged corruption in a road construction work in Bijapur, that was shown on NDTV on December 25, is being discussed as the motive behind Mukesh Chandrakar’s murder.
The said construction work was linked to contractor Suresh Chandrakar.
Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma had claimed that Suresh Chandrakar was a Congress leader. The opposition party, however, claimed the accused joined the ruling BJP recently.

Hyderabad: Several BRS party leaders were placed under preventive arrest by the police on Monday to prevent any attempt to protest against the ACB case involving former Minister and BRS party working president K.T. Rama Rao.
K.T. Rama Rao is set to appear before ACB officials to join the investigation into the alleged Rs 55 crore Formula E race scam held in 2023. The ACB registered a case against K.T.R., IAS officer Arvind Kumar, and former HMDA Director B.L.N. Reddy after Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari lodged a complaint and requested an ACB probe into the allegations.
The Telangana Governor had granted permission to the State government to proceed with the investigation.
The police have made tight security arrangements at the ACB office on Banjara Hills Road No. 12. K.T. Rama Rao is scheduled to visit the office at 10 a.m. The ACB issued notices to K.T.R., Arvind Kumar, and B.L.N. Reddy last week.
Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Monday, January 6 reached the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) office in Hyderabad ahead of the questioning in connection with the alleged Formula E scam.
The former Telangana minister arrived at the office along with his legal team; however, KTR was stopped outside the ACB office. Addressing the media, the Sircilla MLA said, “Telangana police are colluding against me. They might even plant evidence against me at my home like they did to former MLA Patnam Narender Reddy and obtained a fake confession from him.”
The BRS working president wrote to the agency for information on what documents were expected from him during questioning. He has asked the ACB to defer the questioning till the Telangana High Court orders.
Expressing dismay after being denied entry to the ACB office, KTR’s lawyer Soma Bharat asked why he was not allowed to accompany the former Telangana minister if there was no government conspiracy.
It is to be noted that the Telangana ACB had registered a case of corruption against KTR over alleged financial irregularities of over Rs 54.88 crore, in payments between HMDA and UK-based Formula-E Operations Limited (FEO).
The ACB registered the FIR under Sections 13(1)(A) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with Sections 409 and 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code.
Following the ACB case, the ED registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the PMLA, against KTR, Arvind Kumar and BLN Reddy.
As per the original tripartite agreement in the Formula E race in Hyderabad, signed in October 2022 between the Telangana government, FEO, and event sponsor Ace Nxt Gen Pvt Ltd, the government’s role was limited to providing infrastructure and civic amenities for the race.

Hyderabad: There is this nostalgia-based complaint often among people that their cities have changed, or that they don’t recognise their native places anymore. It is usually followed by a reference to migration of people from other places, which then alludes to the perception that ‘outsiders’ have changed or have overshadowed the city’s culture or cultural ethos.
Perhaps at one point I was also on that train of thought, which I understand comes from a sense of loss. That feeling of ‘loss’ of our cultural heritage is usually born out of a sense of belonging to our cities, in this case Hyderabad, which maybe some feel is being stripped away of its culture due to changes (in this case over the last few decade).
Why am I writing this now? Well, among the viral videos that have been doing rounds on Instagram off-late, one of them features someone speaking fondly of the Hyderabad ‘of yesterday’. It triggered a very interesting spate of comments, with few calling the opinion xenophobic, while others defended it. And of course, it had to follow the regular internet polemics we see these days in the comment section of any viral video.
However, it did get me thinking – can we as Hyderabadis actually complain about others coming and finding home here? I mean, let’s set aside the fact that there has been an issue or rather cultural oppression at the hands of leaders from Andhra historically, which is why Telangana was separated in 2014. That is something which we have witnessed and experienced, and is an entirely different issue in itself.
A JCB brought in by the HMDA to clear our encroachments at the Khajaguda rocks. (Image: Siasat)
(Are we really going to blame others for the destruction of our heritage? The best example is the Khajaguda rock site, that has been encroached severely by our own people. Time for some introspection.)
Change is constant for all capital cities
Hyderabad is a capital city, and all capital cities historically thrive on migration because these attract talent due to jobs. We also pride ourselves on being an IT hub, and that has over the last few decades led to a massive influx of people who come here to work (HITEC City). The video on our ‘Hyderabad of yesterday’ being unrecognizable in fact also teeters on population explosion in our city.
But honestly, that is a very shallow and perhaps elitist view of things. As much as I would also say that I don’t recognise the Hyderabad I grew up in, it is also on us to protect our heritage. It is a collective effort, that also needs support from our government. If it has not happened, it means that we as a collective also have failed.
I think people have forgotten or maybe don’t know that Hyderabad historically has been entirely built up by and for migrants who have made this place their home. Our founder Mohd Quli Qutb Shah’s grandfather was an Iranian refugee who made Golconda his home. Should we then say that our founders were also outsiders?
We also have descendants of Yemeni soldiers who have settled in Barkas near the Old City in the 19th century under the Nizams. Their culture is now part of our city, and that holds good for people of any other community that also settles here whether we like it or not. Not to say that our cultural ethos may or may not change, and maybe it won’t be palatable to us, but then that is how big cities function.
A city is made up of its people also, apart from monuments.
Monuments and buildings only make up one part of our heritage. People, and what they contribute to a city is another part of it. I think what sets Hyderabad apart is its ability to make anyone who comes from outside to fall in love with it. You don’t have to do much to be honest. Just love this city, and appreciate what it has. Even with its flaws, our city I’d say is a pretty good mix of culture, technology and infrastructure.
The Badhshahi Ashurkhana. (Image: Siasat)
This entire conversation any city or Hyderabad changing, is also rather silly. There are scores of Muslim families who have links to Uttar Pradesh (specifically Aligarh) as their ancestors a handful of generations ago came to Hyderabad for jobs in the 19th century. How is it that they are Hyderabadi fully today? The same logic applies to anyone else also today who decides to settle down here after coming to work or for any other reason.
Saying that a city has changed due to ‘outsiders’ is pretty much xenophobic. Thousands of Hyderabadis also have gone around the world and settled in different places, especially in America. And it our job as citizens of Telangana to also make others who are not from here understand our cultural ethos. If we are strong on that part, then no one can change or alter our city’s culture. It will last forever for as long as Hyderabadis exist.
That is why even when we go outside, we often yearn for home – it can be in the form of Irani Chai, Khichdi khatta, Pathar ka Gosht, Bagara rice and Dalcha or anything else.
Hyderabad: The Telangana State Waqf Board has witnessed a significant increase in its revenue over the past 10 months, with its income doubling compared to previous periods. This improvement highlights the board’s enhanced performance and suggests that, with further reforms, it could generate crores more by the end of the financial year.
A review of the board’s financial performance reveals a steady rise in income from multiple sources, particularly from dargah auctions and hundi collections. Between February and December 2023, revenue from dargah-related auctions surged to Rs.12.77 crore, compared to Rs.6.56 crore recorded between January 2023 and January 2024.
Similarly, income from hundi auctions at various dargahs saw a sharp increase. The earnings, which stood at Rs.89.43 lakh between January 2023 and January 2024, jumped to Rs.1.92 crore between February and December 2023.
However, rental income for the board showed a decline. While the revenue from rent was Rs.69.17 lakh in the previous period, it dropped to Rs.52.24 lakh in the last 10 months.
The board has also earned Rs.1.14 crore in interest from fixed deposits over the past 10 months, compared to Rs.1.04 crore in the previous financial year. Additionally, income from leased agricultural lands rose to Rs.23 lakh, up from Rs.19 lakh recorded last year.
A key financial challenge for the Waqf Board remains the pending arrears. It is seeking to recover Rs.396 crore from the Telangana government, particularly from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), for land acquisitions. Additionally, Rs.70 crore is pending for land acquired for road expansions and other projects, with Rs.40 crore specifically linked to land taken for Dargah Hazrat Noori Shah Bandlaguda.
Chairman of the Telangana Waqf Board, Syed Azmatullah Hussaini, is making efforts to recover these outstanding amounts, which could further boost the board’s income significantly.
The Judiciary Department under the Telangana Waqf Board has contributed Rs.25.4 crore to the board’s earnings in the past 10 months. Meanwhile, the board has also expanded its support for imams and muezzins, increasing the number of beneficiaries receiving monthly salaries by 1,445. The total number of salaried imams and muezzins now stands at 15,647.
Additionally, there has been a notable rise in the collection of the Waqf Fund, further strengthening the board’s financial position.
Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Cherlapally Railway Station in Hyderabad on Monday, January 6.
The Cherlapally Railway Station, a state-of-the-art facility that has been designed to alleviate congestion at Hyderabad’s existing railway stations, was officially inaugurated by PM Modi in the presence of BJP leader Ashwini Vaishnaw and Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy, and other officials, alongside various other projects.
The Prime Minister highlighted its potential to accelerate regional development by connecting to the Outer Ring Road. “This station, connected to the Outer Ring Road, will significantly boost development in the region,” he stated. PM Modi also highlighted the station’s modern amenities including its platforms, lifts, escalators, and solar-powered operations, saying, “This is a step forward in creating sustainable infrastructure.”
He stated that this new terminal will ease the pressure on existing stations in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, and Kacheguda, making travel more convenient for the people.
The PM also virtually inaugurated a slew of railway projects, including the Jammu railway division, and the Cherlapally Railway Station in Telangana, besides laying the foundation for the Rayagada railway division building in Odisha under the East Coast Railway zone.
Cherlapally Railway Station inauguration
Earlier scheduled to be inaugurated on December 28, 2024, it was postponed over the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The central government had held a seven-day mourning for the veteran politician.
The inauguration of the station had reportedly been postponed a total of four times in the last two months.
This new terminal aims to reduce pressure on the city’s major stations—Secunderabad, Nampally, and Kacheguda—by providing enhanced services and modern amenities for passengers.
With the opening of this terminal, the city anticipates a significant improvement in rail travel efficiency and passenger comfort.
Nine platforms
Built at a cost of approximately Rs 430 crore, the Cherlapally Railway Station Terminal features nine platforms, including four newly constructed high-level platforms.
The terminal is equipped with various facilities comparable to those found in airports, ensuring a seamless travel experience for all users.
Key amenities include separate waiting areas for men and women, an executive lounge, cafeterias, and restaurants to cater to passengers’ needs.
To further enhance accessibility, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is reportedly working on widening approach roads and constructing new routes leading to the terminal.
In addition, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is coordinating bus services from various city depots to ensure smooth connectivity for passengers arriving from different parts of Hyderabad.
With rapid urban development in the eastern parts of the city, including areas like LB Nagar and Uppal, the new terminal will serve as a crucial hub for commuters.
Its strategic location near the Outer Ring Road (ORR) will facilitate easier access for passengers travelling from suburban regions.

On December 13, the Telangana High Court granted interim bail to Allu Arjun for four weeks and directed him to approach the trial court for regular bail. Advocate Niranjan Reddy representing Allu Arjun argued that the charges of culpable homicide should not apply as the actor was not directly involved in the stampede at Sandhya Theater on RTC X Roads.
After considering the arguments, the Nampally court decided to deliver its verdict on January 3. The petition was heard on December 27, and the court adjourned the hearing to December 30 after the Hyderabad police requested additional time to file their counter to the bail petition.

Hyderabad: A heartwarming incident from Uppal Nallacheruvu has come to light where traffic police caught a drunk man driving with his minor son. What took place next will surely move your heart.
When the traffic police inspector Lakshmi Madhavi stopped the man, what could have been a humiliating interaction for him to go through in front of his son turned into a lesson he would remember for the rest of his life.
The inspector took the little boy to her side and made him repeat the words “Papa, don’t drink and drive, I need you” a gesture which would have more impact on the man than any PSA (Public Service Announcement) ever could.
The man, moved to tears at his boy’s plea, immediately kisses the child’s hand and hugs him tightly presumably out of guilt and realization.
Finally the inspector leaves by giving the boy a thumbs up, becoming his hero that dons a uniform instead of a cape.
