Revanth to lay foundation for Hyderabad metro works in Old City on Mar 7

Hyderabad: Observing that Telangana would like to contribute USD one trillion to the Centre’s vision of making the country a USD five trillion economy, Telangana chief minister, A Revanth Reddy on Monday, January 6, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sanction and support various development projects in the state, including the second phase of Hyderabad metro rail.

The PM virtually launched several rail projects, including the inauguration of the Jammu division and the new railway terminal station at Cherlapally here.

Reddy thanked Modi for the new railway terminal.

Stating that Telangana has fallen from second to ninth place in terms of the length of the metro rail network due to a lack of progress during the last 10 years (when BRS was in power), the CM sought the Centre’s sanction of the second phase of Hyderabad metro rail.

Reddy, who virtually attended the event, urged the PM to issue orders to start the works of an integrated railway coach factory at Kazipet sanctioned to the state earlier.

Noting that Telangana is a land-locked state which does not have a port, he requested the Prime Minister to sanction a dedicated railway line from the Machilipatnam port in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to Telangana.

He said industrial parks can be developed by setting up a dry port in the state.

He also sought a ‘regional ring rail’ along with the Regional Ring Road (RRR) in Hyderabad, which would make 60 percent of Telangana urban. Tenders have been called for 170 km of the proposed 370 km RRR, he added.

Thanking the PM for the Cherlapally railway terminal, the CM said, “At the same time, I need (support) for the above-mentioned projects for the development of Telangana. When the PM talks about the USD five trillion economy, we want to contribute USD one trillion economy from Telangana (for the five trillion economy). Railway development is very necessary for that,” he said.

Other developments

Speaking at the event here, Union MoS for railway V Somanna said the inauguration of the new Jammu railway division and Cherlapally new terminal station and laying the foundation stone for the Rayagada rail division building in Odisha is a historic occasion.

The Indian Railways is becoming modern, efficient and safe with the use of new technology.

Noting that the railway budget for Telangana has increased substantially, Somanna said several railway projects, including 346 km of new lines, doubling and tripling of 370 km of railway lines and electrification of over 1,000 km, have been completed in the state during the last 10 years.

The Cherlapally terminal, fourth in Hyderabad, developed at a cost of Rs 430 crore, would reduce congestion in the three existing terminals of Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda, he said.

“Cherlapally railway station is one of the main icons in South India,” he said, adding that it has been built with modern facilities.

Responding to the request of Telangana IT minister D Sridhar Babu seeking Central funds for the development of approach roads and the area near the Cherlapally terminal, Somanna said approach roads are the obligation of the state government.

When a similar issue arose in Karnataka, he spoke to chief minister Siddaramaiah, he said.

The Centre is also investing Rs 2,000 crore in Telangana, he said.

Railway developments in Hyderabad, other parts of Telangana, India

Highlighting the progress of the railways sector in the country, Union coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy said 1,300 stations in the country are being redeveloped. In Telangana, 40 stations are being modernised.

It is unprecedented in the entire world that over 1,300 railway stations are being modernised at the same time, he said. The Secunderabad and Nampally railway stations in Hyderabad are being redeveloped at a cost of Rs 720 crore and Rs 350 crore respectively, he added.

About Rs 1,20,000 crore has already been spent on National Highways in Telangana and another Rs 80,000 crore would be spent, he said. The rail manufacturing unit at Kazipet in the state will soon be completed and it will provide direct employment to 3,000 people.

Alleging that the previous BRS government in Telangana did not respond on the state’s share of Rs 1,000 crore for expansion of Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) trains in Hyderabad, Kishan Reddy said the Centre is bearing the funds and the second phase is now in progress.

The Centre has agreed to extend the MMTS trains to the temple town of Yadagirigutta from Hyderabad if the state government completes land acquisition, he said.

Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Union MoS (Home) Bandi Sanjay Kumar and several other leaders attended the event.

Dum Pukht: Why Hyderabadi kitchens swear by this cooking method

Dum Pukht: Why Hyderabadi kitchens swear by this cooking method

It is no surprise that food is more than sustenance in Hyderabad; it is more like a celebration of flavors, culture, and history. And at the heart of this celebration lies Dum Pukht, a cooking technique that is synonymous with the city’s most revered dishes. From the fragrant flavors of biryani to the richness of dum ka kheema, this age-old technique is what sets apart the Hyderabadi food experience.

Sealing a heavy-bottomed pot with dough and allowing the ingredients to cook in their own steam might sound simple, but the result is a real masterpiece. In fact, even vegetarian delights like bagara baingan owe their flavors and tender textures to this meticulous process.

More than just a method, dum pukht reflects Hyderabad’s culinary soul- a blend of patience, precision, and passion. It is why generations of Hyderabadis continue to swear by this technique to date, keeping alive this royal legacy.

The royal origins of Dum Pukht

The history of dum pukht can be traced back to the Mughal era, where the technique was perfected in the royal kitchens. The term itself comes from Persian, where ‘dum’ means ‘slow cooking with steam’, and ‘pukht’ refers to the process of cooking.

According to popular legend, it was during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah in the 18th century that dum pukht became an iconic cooking method. During a famine, the Nawab instructed the preparation of large pots of food for laborers, which were sealed and slow-cooked. This method of cooking not only fed people but also produced deeply flavorful and tender dishes.

In Hyderabad, the Nizams further refined this technique, integrating local spices and ingredients to create iconic dishes like Hyderabadi Biryani. Known for their love of luxury and attention to detail, it was no wonder that Nizams adopted dum pukht as the centerpiece of their royal feasts. The slow cooking process not only enhanced the flavors but also ensured that the food was tender and aromatic, providing an indulgent experience that appealed to both the senses and health-conscious needs of the royal court.

And indeed, to date, this royal technique continues to create food that is fit for kings.

Dum Pukht in Hyderabad today

Hyderabadi kitchens, be it modern or traditional, continue to swear by dum pukht owing to its ability to preserve the natural flavors of ingredients. The slow-cooking process allows spices and herbs to deeply penetrate the meat, vegetables, and rice, resulting in dishes that are rich, tender, and aromatic. In addition to flavor, dum pukht preserves the nutritional integrity of the food. Cooking food in its own juices, rather than boiling it or exposing it to high temperatures, helps retain vitamins and minerals, making the dishes not just indulgent but also nourishing.

This is the reason why beloved dishes like Hyderabadi Biryani, dum ka murgh, haleem, dum ka kheema, bagara baingan, and khichdi cooked in dum continue to be staples in the contemporary Hyderabad. These dishes are a testament to the technique’s timeless appeal, with the iconic Hyderabadi Biryani standing out for its aromatic layers of marinated meat and rice. Whether in royal feasts or everyday meals, dum pukht remains at the heart of Hyderabad’s culinary heritage, blending tradition with modern dining sensibilities and solidifying its place in both local and global food cultures.

Hyderabad: In the first major step towards land acquisition for the metro rail project in the Old City, some of the residents who gave up properties in that part of Hyderabad were handed over cheques for compensation on Monday, January 6.

The 7.5 kilometre (km) long metro rail line from Imliban to Chandrayangutta is being laid at the cost of Rs 2,750 crore. Directorate of Enforcement office (ED)

Hyderabad: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Hyderabad Zonal Office conducted search operations on January 3 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002 at a premise in Hyderabad related to a conman, Sandeep Desai.

Searches conducted at the residential premises of the said alleged conman led to the recovery and seizure of multiple SIM cards and mobile phones used by the conman to entice and extort money from persons facing ED investigation.

ED, Hyderabad Zonal Office, had earlier conducted search operations on 19 December under the provisions of PMLA, 2002 at two premises in Hyderabad related to CSK Realtors Ltd. and Singh Mansions Pvt. Ltd.

ED investigation revealed that based on the press release of the said search on December 19, conman Sandeep Desai contacted Suresh Kumar Agarwal, managing director of CSK Realtors and tried to extort money from him in the name of ED officers.

The conman, Sandeep Desai, used three different mobile numbers to contact Suresh Kumar Agarwal through WhatsApp and falsely projected himself as a senior ED officer.

He convinced Suresh Kumar Agarwal to meet him at a five-star hotel in Hyderabad and during the meeting introduced himself as ‘Rakesh’ and a cousin/friend of an ED officer. The conman allegedly demanded a hefty sum from Suresh Kumar Agarwal and offered to help him in the ongoing PMLA investigation against CSK Realtors through his contacts.

Based on information received regarding the above modus operandi, Suresh Kumar Agarwal was encouraged by the ED officers to file a written complaint. Based on the complaint, swift action was initiated by the ED officers and the said conman was identified through CCTV footage and surveillance and his whereabouts were ascertained.

Two charred to death after car catches fire near Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Two individuals were charred to death on Monday, January 6 after a car caught fire at the Ghanpur service road in Ghatkesar, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, a suburb of Hyderabad.

One victim has been identified as Ram, 26, a wholesale cycle shop owner from Narapally. The other person remains unidentified.

Upon receiving information, Hyderabad police personnel and fire safety officials reached the scene to contain the fire.

A case has been registered and attempts are being made to identify the second victim.

Further investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday night at the Hotel Minerva Grand in Hyderabad’s Hamayathnagar caught fire fortunately, the flames were extinguished in no time.

Fearing that the fire could be coming out of the kitchen in one of the hotel’s restaurants, videos were making rounds. But the situation on the ground was different. It turned out to be flames caused by the residues of oil trapped on the walls of the chimneys that had accumulated over time, suddenly causing the fire.

Hyderabad records 2500 fire accidents in 2024

The city recorded approximately 2,500 fire accidents this year while Telangana saw a total of 7,600 accidents resulting in over 200 fatalities and property losses worth Rs 822 crore, an official of the fire department told Siasat.com.

These incidents range from small apartment fires to commercial buildings, and factories among other things.

Speaking to Siasat.com, fire department officials in Hyderabad attributed the cause of the fires across Hyderabad to neglect, faulty wiring, overuse of electrical appliances, and carelessness in storing flammable substances. “We try to respond as quickly as possible, but many people are unaware of what to do during a fire, often getting stuck in lifts. Some buildings fail to follow safety protocols, such as having emergency exit doors or a lack of fire extinguishers,” they added.

New Osmania General Hospital foundation to be laid within a week: Telangana CM

Hyderabad: Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy, on Monday, January 6, announced that the foundation stone for constructing the new Osmania General Hospital building at the Goshamahal Stadium will be laid within a week.

He said that a special meeting with all legislators will be held at Dr B R Ambedkar Secretariat either on January 11 or 12, where all officials will be present to discuss the issues and developmental works of Old City.

CM Revanth, along with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi and IT minister D Sridhar Babu inaugurated the Nehru Zoological Park Aramghar flyover on Monday.

Addressing a public meeting, the chief minister assured that funds would be released for completing the Charminar Pedestrian Project which has been lying pending for over a decade. He also announced that the cable-stayed bridge at the Mir Alam Tank will be ready in two years.

I will ensure work is done: Telangana CM

“I will ensure that funds are released, but you should get the work done. If a government can’t spend for the development of Hyderabad, there is no need for such a government,” CM Revanth said, in response to requests from the Owaisi brothers who stressed the need for completing various infrastructural projects in Old City.

Jab ayya aur miya raazi toh hum kya kar sakte hain,” Revanth said in a humorous tone referring to Asaduddin Owaisi as ayya and D Sridhar Babu as miya.

Reminiscing his 35-year-old friendship with Akbaruddin Owaisi, the chief minister spoke about their student days near Urdu Galli in Himatyathnagar.

While mentioning that politics can be done at the time of elections, CM Revanth said that when it came to the development of Hyderabad, he was ready to work with everyone, and was also ready to fight with anyone for the interests of Telangana.

History of Osmania General Hospital

The Osmania General Hospital was completed in 1925 after Hyderabad was affected by the bubonic plague around 1911. The city administration then took care of the issue, following which the then Nizam Osman Ali Khan (1911-48) set up the City Improvement Board (CIB) in 1912 to improve Hyderabad’s infrastructure. It was designed by architect Vincent Esch, who also designed the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.

The original or heritage building of Osmania Hospital (along with others like the High Court and City College) is a fine example of the Osmania style or Indo-Saracenic genre of architecture and is an integral part of Hyderabad’s 20th-century riverscape and skyline. The CIB during the reign of Osman Ali Khan had transformed the medieval city into a modern metropolis, complete with infrastructure like the High Court, railway stations, etc.

Include dargahs, mosques in Telangana Tourism Policy: Akbaruddin Owaisi

Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi has appealed to chief minister A Revanth Reddy to include dargahs, masjids and major historic and heritage sites of the Old City in the newly introduced Telangana Tourism Policy.

In his address during the inauguration of the Nehru Zoological Park- Aramghar flyover along with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday, January 6, Akbaruddin urged CM Revanth to include dargahs like Peer Jahangir, Yousifain, Baba Shareefuddin Pahadi, Mecca Masjid, Medak Church, Grammar School Church, Char Kamaan near Charminar, and also a Parsi place of worship in the tourism policy.

Recalling that it was during former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s reign when the Charminar Pedestrian Project was proposed, Akbaruddin Owaisi pointed out the delay and stressed that if completed, it would add another feather to Charminar, which he termed has been the economic zone for the Old City.

He also requested the chief minister to get parking slots constructed near Charminar as nearly 25,000 to 30,000 tourists visit the iconic area on a daily basis.

Akbaruddin Owaisi also requested the state government to acquire 20 acres out of the 50-acre of land presently belonging to the Waqf Board at Baba Shareefuddin Pahadi, to build a sports stadium.

“It has to be remembered that the football players of Old City have won gold for other countries in the Olympics. Today they feel neglected,” he said.

He urged the chief minister to ensure timely honorarium payments to Imams and Mauzams, pending for five months.

He appealed for the completion of Makalpet IT Tower and the need for a skill development centre in Old City. He also sought Rs 500 crore special package for the construction of 3 new overhead water tanks to tackle water problems in the region.

On a lighter note, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi hoped CM Revanth would take the first ride from Mahatma Gandhi bus station to Chandrayangutta when the Metro Phase-II is ready for the public in 2028.

Appreciating CM for remembering his jail friend

Asaduddin Owaisi praised Telangana CM for recently meeting his jail friend Nagayya who cooked food for him while he was lodged inside the Cherlapalli Jail.

“When you go to jail, you won’t forget your jail friend,” Owaisi said.

With a dash of humour, Owaisi said that he didn’t know who may go to jail soon or who won’t.

Asaduddin Owaisi calls for skywalk from Old City metro to Charminar in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday, January 6, called for a skywalk to be constructed from Mir Alam Mandi metro station to Charminar in Hyderabad.

Stating the reason for the demand, the AIMIM supremo said that a large number of tourists visit Charminar, Laad Bazaar and other historical monuments in Hyderabad which could be economically beneficial for all.

Owaisi further asked the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMRL) managing director NVS Reddy to establish a similar skywalk from the metro station to the Salarjung Museum. He said that in all locations where the metro stations will be established, the evictees should be given priority in case they want to establish businesses in the metro station premises.

The Hyderabad MP thanked Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy for approving the compensation amount for evictees who have given up their properties for the development of the Old City Metro rail project.

Seeking time for the evictees to move from their current residence, Owaisi said, “I understand that it is very difficult for people to give up their ancestral homes and move to other location, I urge the government of Telangana to give them some time to relocate.”

He appreciated the HMRL for protecting 104 religious structures which are likely to be affected by the Old City metro rail project in Hyderabad. “Numerous religious activities including, Mild un Nabi, Ganesh and Bonalu procession take place at these sites. However, the progress of the Old City metro rail shouldn’t be hindered. Kindly look for alternatives so that the project is completed in the next four years,” he urged NVS Reddy.

The AIMIM chief further urged the Telangana government to complete the construction of the Airport Metro stating that roughly 8,000-10,000 youth travel to the Hi-tech City for jobs on a daily basis.

Asaduddin Owaisi accuses previous governments of neglecting Old City metro

While he appreciated CM Revanth for laying the foundation stone for the Old City metro project, Owaisi criticised the previous governments for neglecting the project. “Our well-wishers (in the political sense) used to say that the Majlis (AIMIM) is an impediment to Old City’s development,” he said.

The Hyderabad MP went on to say that the first inspection for laying the metro rail line was undertaken by the Telugu Desam Party government under the then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. “However, they didn’t take the project seriously. After Naidu, Rajasekhara Reddy took over and initiated the work on the plan that was approved during the TDP government and so on five chief ministers went by before the Old City metro project began.”

Owaisi accused ex-Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao of neglecting the development of the Old City metro during his 10-year tenure. The AIMIM chief said he repeatedly urged KCR to initiate the project and stated that the topic would be diverted.

Telangana will contribute USD 1 trillion if railways boosted, CM to Modi

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Telangana was ready to contribute USD 1 trillion in the USD 5 trillion economy that the latter envisions to see India emerging only if the railway infrastructure and network in the state is given a major boost.

During the inauguration of Cherlapalli railway terminal which was virtually inaugurated by PM Modi along with other railway infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir, and Odisha on Monday, January 6, the Telangana chief minister reminded the prime minister that the proposals sent by the state government for the Metro Phase-II project was pending and needed the approval of the Union cabinet.

He requested the Centre to approve a dedicated greenfield highway along with a railway line connecting Hyderabad with Bandar Port.

Pointing out that South Korea was looking for “China plus 1” country for manufacturing electric vehicles, CM Revanth said that South Korea was ready to invest heavily in Telangana.

He also urged Prime Minister Modi to sanction a railway line alongside the regional ring road in Telangana, a railway line between Vikarabad and Krishna that would connect Hyderabad with Karnataka, and a railway coach factory in Kazipet.

“Telangana is a land-locked state which doesn’t have a port facility. The only way to increase connectivity and spur economic development is by improving the railway network and infrastructure,” Revanth observed.
