Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, February 18 said that Telangana aims to be number one in cyber safety.

Explaining how deep-rooted cyber crimes are, the chief minister informed that nearly Rs 22,812 crore of money across India is lost to cyber criminals, thus making it a huge threat to the Indian economy.

CM Reavnth spoke about the dangerous spread of fake news and its impact on society. “Another major threat today is fake news, misinformation on social media can cause chaos in society. The Telangana government is committed to working with experts, and IT firms and to allocate resources to build an ecosystem for cybersecurity solutions,” he added.

Citing a study the Telangana CM said that cyber criminals duped people of Rs 22,812 crore across India adding that it is a threat to India’s economy and citizens.

“Another major threat today is fake news, misinformation on social media can cause chaos in society. The Telangana government is committed to working with experts, and IT firms and to allocate resources to build an ecosystem for cybersecurity solutions,” Reddy added.

Seven new cybercrime police stations across Telangana

The Telangana government launched seven new cybercrime police stations last year. “Previously the country used to deal with various physical crimes including murders and burglaries at home. Now, the burglary happens online,” Reddy said.

The CM called for the importance of adopting advanced strategies to combat cybercrime, revealing that the government plans to establish a “Cybercity” to address such issues. “The Telangana police is leading the country in terms of tackling cybercrimes, this is what the Centre says,” he said.

He reiterated the need to enhance the methods to tackle cybercrime stating that the sky is the limit for such offences. He stressed collaborative efforts with police officials from various states to curb cybercrime.

Speaking of coordination, the CM said that Cybercrimes DCP Shikha Goel and Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty have initiated the “Shield 2025 programme”.

As part of the initiative, the two officials are coordinating with cybersecurity experts and officials from other states.

KCR’s birthday celebrated in Hyderabad school, headmistress suspended

Hyderabad: The headmistress of MPP School has been suspended for reportedly allowing the birthday celebrations of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) inside school premises on Monday, February 17 in Nandanavanam Colony of Saroonagar Mandal, a suburb of Hyderabad.

According to the notice, Rajitha, who was serving as the headmistress in charge, permitted a former corporator to conduct a birthday celebration within the school premises in Hyderabad with student participation.

The District Educational Officer (DEO) of Rangareddy, Suseendra Rao cited this as a violation of the Telangana Government Conduct (TGCS) Rules, 1964, and education department guidelines, which strictly prohibit political activities in government schools.

Officials stated that using an educational institution for political purposes is against ethical standards and departmental norms. Based on a report submitted by the mandal educational officer (MEO) on February 17, the DEO issued immediate suspension orders against the headmistress in charge.

During the suspension period, the headmistress of MPP School in Hyderabad is barred from leaving the headquarters without prior approval and will only receive a subsistence allowance as per regulations.

The case has also been reported to the regional joint director of school education (RJDSE) and the director of school education (DSE), Telangana, for further action.

On February 16, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) removed posters of KCR. Posters of KCR were put up at various places in Hyderabad ahead of his birthday on Monday, February 17. The Disaster Response Force (DRF) was deployed at certain locations in the city to take down the posters.

The posters were reportedly removed based on orders from the Telangana government.

Kashmir logs hottest May day in 13 years; Advisory issued

Hyderabad: The weathermen in Telangana have forecast slightly hotter conditions in Hyderabad and surrounding areas in March with day temperatures above normal by two to three degrees Celsius.

The normal temperatures are between 34 to 37 degrees Celcius in March, marking a growth trajectory from winter to summer in the previous month. This may go up to 39 degrees Celcius to 42 degrees Celcius as the summer stabilises in March, according to YV Rama Rao, a retired deputy director general (Meteorology) of the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD).

Rao now a consultant at the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), involved in data compilation and quality control of observations from 1,048 weather stations of the Telangana government, Rama Rao has said that temperatures will rise following a normal pattern and fluctuations due to wind and dryness.

In the peak summer of April-May, the temperatures are generally between 42 degrees Celcius to 45 degrees Celcius unless there are severe heatwave conditions. “It is normal heat conditions in the city as of now,” said the director of IMD Hyderabad Kopparthi Nagaratna.

She denied giving any heatwave warnings as of now. Skymet Weather, a private company providing weather forecasts, put out on its website that the day temperature which was 35 degrees Celcius for the past few days will likely go up by one degrees Celcius on Wednesday, February 19.

A severe heat wave condition was experienced in Jogulamba Gadwal and Mahbubnagar districts on May 4 last year. In the preceding year, severe heat waves were also recorded in Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Medak, Adilabad and Peddapalli for four days.

According to the IMD records, the summer of 2019 was the worst in the last five years as heat waves were experienced for seven days in June in Khammam and Medak districts. Peddapalli also had a severe heatwave on May 28, 2019. Heatwaves prevailed for 43 days from April to June across Telangana.

There were 9 heatwave days in 2020, 2 in 2021, 5 in 2022, 15 in 2023 and 23 in 2024.

The data of IMD for February 2024 showed the day temperatures ranging from 31 degrees Celcius to 35 degrees Celcius at several centres except Khammam where it was 36 degrees Celcius. A couple of centres also recorded 37 degrees Celcius.

The annual report of  TGDPS said the state faced moderate to high temperatures during the summer months from March to June. Temperatures changed a lot during the day with a minimum during the early morning and a maximum during the afternoon hours. In the summer season of 2024, the highest maximum temperature of 47.2 degrees Celcius was recorded at Bheemaram mandal of Mancherial district on May 30.

The heatwave season starts in March and goes on till May and sometimes extends up to the first week of June, amid a delay in the onset of monsoon.

The variation of temperature during the day shows a gradual rise from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. After 4:30 pm, temperature shows a sudden fall of 6-8 degrees Celcius in two hours from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm because of the semi-arid nature of the soil.

In 1984, heatwaves prevailed for 16 days from May 14 to 29 in the coal belt area of Ramagundam.  From 1994 onwards, the frequency of severe heat waves and the duration of heatwave spells have increased significantly.

In 1997, between May 18 to June 5, and 1998, between May 23 to June 10, the duration of moderate to severe heatwave spells had extended up to 19 days.

Heatwave risks, preparedness measures

To meet the threat of heatwave conditions in the state, the disaster management department headed by special chief secretary Arvind Kumar has planned a meeting of district collectors next week to discuss measures to take an early warning system to all villages. It will be presided over by the revenue minister Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy. “To reduce the impact of heat stress, the early warning system will help a great deal on days when temperatures are likely to be high,” Arvind Kumar remarked.

Heatwaves have claimed hundreds of lives in Telangana over the years as the state was under the Core Heatwave Zone (CHZ). The highest impact of heatwave is caused in May. By definition, heatwaves are identified with maximum temperatures shooting above 40 degrees Celcius and depart from normal by 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celcius. A severe heatwave is in excess of 45 degrees Celcius and departs from normal by 6.4 degrees Celcius or more.

Responding to a question on heatwave deaths, Arvind Kumar said, “Heatwave is not yet classified as a natural disaster by the state government. Deaths in peak summer always get coloured. It becomes difficult to pin down a particular cause.”

A few states like Tamil Nadu have classified it as a natural disaster and started collecting data on deaths. The government of Telangana is in the process of identifying it as a natural disaster. We can then be sure of the number of casualties and loss of productivity due to the heat wave.

Since heat wave conditions prevail in several parts of the state during the summer, deaths occur due to sunstroke every year. In 2015, the number of deaths due to sunstroke at 541 was the highest in the decade. Gradually, deaths have been decreasing amid an improvement in weather forecast and disaster preparedness.

Hyderabad: Seized vehicles rusting at Hussaini Alam police station.

Hyderabad: Vehicles seized by the police for various violations have been rusting outside the Hussaini Alam police station for several months.

About 100 vehicles are parked in the open place adjacent to the Hussaini Alam police station and getting damaged due to a lot of dust and water. The police seized the vehicles in different cases and for MV Act violations during recent months.

The vehicle should have been shifted to the Goshamahal police grounds and then moved up for auction after issuing a public notice.

Due to the presence of the vehicles, a big portion of the road that was recently widened by GHMC is encroached upon. “The police themselves are encroaching public thoroughfare. If motorists are not using the road at present at least people can park their vehicles conveniently,” said a shopkeeper on condition of anonymity.

The local people complain that a lot of garbage and trash has accumulated in between the vehicles kept at the place. “If at all someone throws a cigarette butt or lights a match stick and tosses it there will be a major fire. Beside the seized vehicles dump, the policemen who come to attend duty park their scooters. Lots of fuel is there in the vehicles and imagine the magnitude of the fire,” said a resident Najamuddin.

Residents point out that big rats and bandicoots have made the vehicle dump their home. “At night the rats come out and move into the houses in the surroundings. The big rats are digging into the walls and ground,” complained another resident Nirmala.

The higher officials should immediately take note of the issue and respond swiftly, the residents demanded.

Bathukamma Kunta lake in Hyderabad resurface amid HYDRAA excavations

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) excavations uncovered hidden waters of Bathukamma Kunta Lake, which was believed to have been lost to encroachment.

On Tuesday, February 18 after digging through the thick layers of soil, Bathukamma Kunta Lake began to emerge, reigniting hope for the revival of the once-vital water body. “If all the soil that has been filled over the years is removed, the pond will be filled with water once again,” Hyderabad residents stated.

However, the situation surrounding the ownership of the land remains contentious. Local leader Edla Sudhakar Reddy had previously approached the Telangana High Court, claiming the Bathukamma Kunta land as his own, but was advised to take the matter to a lower court.

Earlier, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath emphasized that the restoration of Bathukamma Kunta would be completed soon, focusing solely on the existing 5.15-acre area. He assured that the project would not encroach on any residential spaces and that HYDRAA would remove the trees growing around the lake.

About Bathukamma Kunta Lake in Hyderabad

Bathukamma Kunta often referred to as Gangamma, located in Bagh Amberpet, Hyderabad was officially recorded in Survey No 563 of Amberpet Mandal during the 1962-63 census. The lake originally covered 16.13 acres, including the buffer zone. However, due to encroachments and ongoing land disputes, only 5.15 acres remain today.

Shabbir Ali welcomes GO for shops to stay open late in Ramzan in Hyderabad and Telangana.

Hyderabad: Government advisor for minority affairs Shabbir Ali on Tuesday, February 18, said he ‘welcomes’ the possibility of issuing another government order (GO) permitting businesses and shops to remain open late at night during the holy month of Ramzan. He also emphasized that this provision should not be limited to Hyderabad but extended to other cities, where necessary directives can be issued to the police department.

At a review meeting held at the Secretariat that was chaired by state BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Shabbir Ali said that an order from the Labour Department allowing shops to stay open late would facilitate business activities during Ramzan. The suggestions came during a high-level review meeting ahead of Ramzan with top officials of the Telangana government and legislators.

“Ponnam Prabhakar instructed all officials to work in coordination with each other and take all necessary steps to ensure better facilities for worshippers during Ramazan,” said a press release from the government. He also emphasized the need for uninterrupted electricity supply, clean water distribution, garbage disposal, and other essential services in major mosques, key intersections, and across Hyderabad during Ramzan.

The minister reiterated that the Telangana government believes in treating all citizens equally and compassionately, and that the efforts to enhance essential services during Ramazan align with this approach.

Hyderabad during Ramzan witnesses a massive footfall of people who throng the Old City for shopping and food. Hotels and other eateries are also open throughout the night across the Old City selling Haleem and other delicacies which attract people from far-off areas lie Hitec City.

During the meeting on Ramzan on Tuesday, Ponnam Prabhakar stated that the Telangana government focuses not only on Hyderabad but also on other Muslim-majority areas across the state, ensuring essential arrangements during Ramazan. AIMIM MLAs Ahmed Balala, Jaffar Hussain Meraj, Mozam Khan, Mohammed Majid Hussain, Minority Welfare Department secretary Tafseer Iqbal, and others also attended the meeting.

Shabbir Ali also stressed the need to replace carpets in Mecca Masjid and the Shahi Masjid, apart from reviewing the functionality of CCTV cameras installed around major mosques in Hyderabad during Ramzan. Secretary for Minority Welfare Tafseer Iqbal instructed subordinate officers to ensure the strengthening of essential facilities in Hyderabad and across the state during Ramzan.

“Officials from the Electricity Department, Municipal Administration, Labour Department, Police Department, and other relevant agencies presented details of the steps taken so far.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also noted the issues raised by public representatives and directed senior officials to take necessary action,” added the release.

2 TGSRTC buses catch fire at Hyderabad's Kushaiguda depot

Hyderabad: Two TGSRTC buses caught fire at the Kushaiguda bus depot in Hyderabad on Tuesday, February 18. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Upon receiving information about the blaze, the Hyderabad fire department rushed fire tenders promptly at the scene and initiated efforts to control the blaze. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and authorities are currently investigating the incident.

More details regarding the situation are awaited as officials work to determine how the fire started and assess any potential damage to the buses involved.

Earlier this month, a major fire broke out in Hyderabad’s Madina and Abbas Towers, a commercial complex housing around 200 shops.

The fire which started late Sunday night emerged from a shop on the fourth floor and quickly spread to adjacent shops impacting a shop on the third floor.

Following the incident, authorities deployed 15 fire tenders from various fire stations across Hyderabad to bring the situation under control.

The blaze was further fueled by the presence of highly combustible materials such as clothing, bed sheets, and carpets.

In another incident last week, a moving four-wheeler caught fire near Tipu Khan Bridge, which falls under the jurisdiction of Langar Houz Police Station, Hyderabad.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the car fire incident as the person who was driving the vehicle was alert. Upon sensing the threat, he not only got out of the car but also ran to a safe distance.

Following the incident, fire personnel rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control.

PIL against Hyderabad Metro expansion in Telangana HC

Hyderabad: The Multiplex Association of India has petitioned the Telangana High Court to lift restrictions that prohibit children under 16 from attending special movie screenings before 11 am and after 11 pm.

The association contends that challenges regarding ticket prices should not be classified as public interest litigations (PILs).

Senior advocate S Niranjan Reddy, representing the association, highlighted that these restrictions have led to substantial financial losses for multiplexes.

During the hearing, Justice B Vijaysen Reddy noted that in Europe, children are not allowed to attend movies after 11 pm.

He subsequently adjourned the case until February 24, instructing that a counter-response be filed regarding the petition.

This legal action follows a previous petition filed by a vegetable trader from Hyderabad on January 10, which questioned the legality of shows scheduled between 4 am and 6 am.

The judge expressed concerns about late-night screenings potentially harming children’s health and implemented measures to prevent minors from entering theaters after 11 pm.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has launched an ambitious project to rejuvenate several lakes across Hyderabad.

This initiative focuses on restoring vital water bodies such as Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula in Shivrampally, Thammidi Kunta in Madhapur, Sunnam Cheruvu in Guttala Begumpet, Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally, and Nalla/Pedda Cheruvu in Uppal.

The overarching goals of this project are to improve groundwater levels, prevent urban flooding, and enhance the overall environment of Hyderabad.

Funding for the restoration efforts is being provided by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

HYDRAA collaborating with experts

HYDRAA is collaborating with experts, including Anand Malligavad, who is recognized as the ‘Lake Man of India’.

The rejuvenation process will involve essential steps such as dewatering and desilting, with excavation work already underway. Detailed project reports (DPRs) have been prepared, and tenders will soon be issued to expedite the restoration work.

In addition to the ecological benefits, the project will also incorporate various amenities around the lakes. Plans include constructing walking tracks, gazebos, open gyms, children’s play areas, and benches to create recreational spaces for residents.

The initiative aims to beautify these areas while promoting community engagement and awareness about the importance of preserving water bodies.

3D development model prepared for Nalla Cheruvu

HYDRAA has set a target to complete the revival of all six lakes by June. A 3D development model has been prepared for Nalla Cheruvu in Uppal, showcasing its transformation post-restoration.

Commissioner AV Ranganath emphasized that this project is not only about reviving lakes but also about ensuring the long-term preservation of Hyderabad’s crucial water resources.

The agency’s broader vision includes expanding its reach to cover 50% of Telangana’s population by 2050 and establishing a new police station along with increasing its Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams.

In its 2024 report, HYDRAA highlighted significant progress with the restoration of 12 lakes and reclamation of 200 acres.

The agency has resolved over 5,800 complaints and is actively working on fixing Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries for lakes.

Hyderabad: International students, including those from Hyderabad, are losing jobs as employers are firing them, fearing Donald Trump’s immigration policy.

Many local businesses have also started hiring people with valid work visas.

Visa restrictions

Although student visas allow international students, including those from Hyderabad, to work on campus, the visa rules prohibit students from working off campus.

However, local businesses, especially Indian restaurants and grocery stores, used to rely on international students. Now, seeing the Trump administration’s policy, they are firing students and hiring those on valid job visas.

Students can also face problems if they are found working off campus. It can lead to visa cancellations or deportation.

A student from Hyderabad, on the condition of anonymity, revealed that although people used to work in grocery stores and local restaurants, now, after Trump came to power, most of them have left those jobs fearing deportation.

Although many of them are facing hardship, they are either relying on savings or even taking help from parents. They are avoiding taking jobs off campus.

It remains to be seen how this will impact admissions to higher studies in the US in the next intake.

HC halts MLC's swearing-in ceremony of Kodandaram and Amer

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has made it clear that sub-registrars do not have the authority to register assigned lands.

The court has directed the Rangareddy Collector to conduct a thorough investigation into a land dispute and to file criminal charges against the sub-registrar involved and any private individuals if the land is found to be assigned. The investigation is to be completed within three months.

The case involves 33 Guntas of assigned land in Survey 176/23 of Aziznagar, Moinabad Mandal, Rangareddy district, belonging to Anantharam Laxmaiah.

A dispute among the heirs led to some individuals converting the land to non-agricultural use and selling it. Other heirs filed a petition with the High Court, alleging concealment of the land’s assigned status during the sale.

Justice CV Bhaskar Reddy’s bench heard the petition and stated that illegal land grabbing could result in a six-month prison sentence, a fine of Rs 10,000, or both.

The court has ordered an inquiry into the matter and directed that action be taken against those responsible.

In a separate case, Justice CV Bhaskar Reddy of the Telangana High Court directed the district collector of Mancherial to investigate unauthorized land registrations involving a sub-registrar, after allegations surfaced that the sub-registrar proceeded to entertain land registrations on assigned lands without proper authorization.

The court has also stated that sub-registrars who register assigned lands are subject to six months imprisonment according to the Assigned Act.

The court granted the collector four weeks to file the report and initiate appropriate action against the concerned registration authorities
